So, Gale wasn’t actually her cousin in the books. That comes from a part of the books where they pretend Gale is here cousin to better sell peeta and katniss’ love story. It makes sense why people that the cousin thing is true though, because when Suzanne Collins submitted the draft of the book originally Gale was supposed to be much more of a friend than love interest but the marketers thought that a love triangle would sell better, so his role was changed. Which really just lead to a pouty, possessive, annoying Gale that distracts from the plot.

Honestly him as a platonic friend of Katniss that she would have to would have made a much better character that possessive love interesting. We needed more platonic boy/girl friendships during that time period

Katniss didn’t even know he was attracted to her until she returned from the games and he was all bent out of shape. She was always clueless about how others felt about her, always assuming they either had no opinion of her or thought poorly of her. Peeta was the one who could read people.

You mean I suffered through another love triangle because of marketing?! Personally, the love triangle really did nothing for the story. We have kids killing each other for people’s entertainment. These are high stakes.

What’s funny is it’s a guess based on book descriptions Katniss is of Native American ancestry (olive skin, long straight dark hair commonly braided) from her dad’s side and Gale is stated to look like her as well. And in some of the Native American communities ive been told by my native friend, there’s a joke of “Is that my cousin?” Or that someone you see/know could be your cousin. So the joke of them being possibly related cousins actually has a few niche layers to it.😅

His amputation was also a big factor in the development of their love story. With these movies, I was so sad that they did not develop the love story between Katniss and Peeta. In the book it gets so deep and it makes you understand why it was always going to be peeta and talks about how Gail’s character was completely changed after the first games and he became someone she couldn’t even recognize. in addition, they left out the fact that she was deaf mostly after the first games. Everyone wanted Peeta to live because funny enough this book subverted gender norms. Katniss was always more masculine, not very kind or open with her emotions and many times in the books would tell herself how Peeta deserved to live over her. Peeta exuded more feminine qualities; artistic, a baker, he deeply loved his family and was always very open with his emotions. I think similar to Katniss, Haymitch viewed Peeta sometimes as the more decent one to live but ultimately I think everyone wanted Katniss alive so they could use her

@@valentinafangirlingthe books being in Katniss’ pov works well because we get a lot more information and context due to hearing her thoughts, but I think the movies also being completely in her pov and focusing on her story alone was a detriment, especially for viewers who didn’t read the books. Peeta, Haymitch, Finnick and Johanna in particular are fantastic characters with great backstories and personalities, but that got lost in the movies in favour of focusing solely on Katniss and the revolution. It’s made blatantly obvious in the books that Peeta is super popular with the viewers in the capitol, that he’s very likeable and is known for being compassionate and kind despite coming from an abusive home with a mother and brothers who are pretty indifferent to him. I remember during training in catching fire he becomes close to the morphlings and paints with them, which makes the scene when one of them sacrifices herself to save him and he comforts her as she dies especially poignant and sad.
That being said, my mum who has never read the books nor knows anything about the plot watched all the movies recently on her own and was telling me her thoughts about them when I was catching up with her. She definitely got the impression that Katniss wanted Peeta to survive because he was a genuinely good person, willing to sacrifice everything to protect Katniss (and others) and because she loved him and would clearly do anything for her loved ones. I guess it’s just up to interpretation if you don’t have the more extensive knowledge on these characters that is given in the books.

So, her being the face of the rebellion doesn't mean much to her especially if it's causing Peeta harm. Even if sacrificing Peeta is for the greater good she doesn't care. Her main goal has been to keep Peeta and Prim safe. Second, she loves Peeta and just genuinely believes he should live more than her as he represents everything good in the world. This movie did a great job portraying Katniss’ desire to just protect those she loved and not be a piece in either side. Originally in the catching fire book Katniss actually just wants to run away with her loved ones and leave everything behind. Gale actually gets mad at her because she could do so much but doesn’t want to. It’s such a messed up thing to put on a 16 year old.

The thing that they have in the books but not in the movies is how truley awful the capital is, the winners are often S trafficked and have to attend parties and essentially be slaves out to rich people that got crushes on them while they were televised being forced to kill and survive. So Finnick being crushed that Anne is in the capital and Hamish being an alcoholic makes a WHOLE lot more sense when you have that in mind. Also Joanna’s anger. Gale is not her cousin, it was a farce.

he was also just more considerate in katniss & haymich perspectives so they considered him to be the bedt of all of them. Therefore, he should live instead of them

I actually really liked that the movie was split into two because I feel like we got more information, they were able to build more the world. Katniss wanted Peeta to be saved instead of her because for her he represents everything good in the world, he's pure, good of heart. Basically everything she thinks she isn't. I can't wait for the finale, both of these parts are so good, they never fail to make me cry. ❤

The origin of the hanging tree song is written by lucy gray baird in the ballad of songbirds and snakes book. In district 12, they had a section where “rebels” would be hung. The creepiest part was that the surrounding woods were full of mockingbirds that would repeat the sounds of the peoples screams as they died. Which just adds some more lore to its significance. Crazy shit.

In the books, Katniss explains that The Hanging Tree is one of many songs she learned from her father when she was young, and she taught it to Prim. They would sing it together, oblivious to it's meaning, weaving 'necklaces of rope', aka minature nooses, and their mother was made uncomfortable about the practise. She worried it was a song they shouldn't sing in public, so she bade them to stop.

My theory is that Katniss was totally oblivious the cat to the point where she didn’t even realize that it wasn’t the same cat who approached her when she went back to district 12. So she brings a random cat to Prim who’s just glad to have any cat to keep her company in the dreary dungeon that’s district 13. So she doesn’t even say anything to Katniss, she just takes the cat and keeps her mouth shut.

MockingJay being split works because we barely got introduced to District 13 and its really supposed to be from Katniss POV since its her story, but Hollywood🤷‍♀️. I know the other comments pointed out it’s a made up story because with the whole star crossed lovers thing Gale being friends with Katniss just doesn’t work- HOWEVER. Gale was originally written as katniss’s cousin. Suzanne Collins’s publishers made her change it- and that’s how she chose to change it lol. So Gale being portrayed as her cousin is a nod to that.
Suzanne makes it clear Gale was never an option and Peeta was always endgame.

a lot of the reason katniss is so adamant about peeta being the one that lives is that she feels so incredibly indebted to him. Katniss and her family were on the verge of death when peeta gave her the bread. that was the moments when she decided to start hunting outside the fences of district 12. she also feels very guilty about peeta loosing his leg in 74th games. She was the one who tighten his tourniquet which did save his life but ultimately made him loose his leg. she only found out about his leg during their televised reunion after the games. He was also a large part of the reason both of them were able to make it out since he started the whole star-crossed lovers angle.

Funny enough, I started reading the books because you guys said you wouldn’t 🤣 I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I’ve read the first two I’ll probably start the mockingbird Thursday. In reading the book, for a movie adaptation 75-80% of the movie is in alignment with the books which is actually pretty good compared to other book adaptations I’ve read then watched. The book fleshes out each character (clearly) so you understand why Katniss fought so hard to get Peeta to win for Catching Fire.
What I’ve learnt over the years is to view movies (based on books) and books as a separate entity or you’ll get caught up in nitpicking that you really won’t enjoy the movie.

The problem with these movies is in order to sell the love triangle they upgraded Gale and downplayed Peeta. While the romance between Katniss and Peeta was a show they had to present it was actually real. However, you had a 17 year old who had big feelings she was having difficulty processing under a microscope being forced to be a distraction. At the end of Catching Fire Katniss says “I trusted him [Haymitch]. I put what was precious [Peeta] in Haymitch's hands and he has betrayed me.”
Gale was never an actual option in the book. He was friend zoned and portrayed as Katniss’ cousin so that her only friend being interviewed during the 74th Hunger Games wasn’t a good looking male. They were not actually cousins.
Peeta had rooted in Katniss’ heart with the bread that saved her and she kept tabs on him. In fact she was upset he was reaped after she had volunteered. Katniss also references several times their eyes would meet at school only to flit away from each other. I would argue if Katniss was the spark then Peeta was the air that allowed it to catch fire.
Peeta was not dead weight during the games in fact Peeta saved Katniss just as much (if not more) as Katniss saved Peeta. Katniss would not have survived without Peeta.
Haymitch and Katniss decide to save Peeta during the quarter quell because they view him has the better part of their trio and that they owed him not because of his leg amputation.

A sampling of Katniss thoughts on Peeta throughout the books:
***I reach out and take his hand.
“Well, he probably used up a lot of resources helping me knock you out,” I say mischievously.
“Yeah, about that,” says Peeta, entwining his fingers in mine. “Don’t try something like that again.”
      “Or what?” I ask.
      “Or . . . or . . .” He can’t think of anything good. “Just give me a minute.”
“What’s the problem?” I say with a grin.
“The problem is we’re both still alive. Which only reinforces the idea in your mind that you did the right thing,” says Peeta.
“I did do the right thing,” I say.
“No! Just don’t, Katniss!” His grip tightens, hurting my hand, and there’s real anger in his voice. “Don’t die for me. You won’t be doing me any favors. All right?”
I’m startled by his intensity but recognize an excellent opportunity for getting food, so I try to keep up. “Maybe I did it for myself, Peeta, did you ever think of that? Maybe you aren’t the only one who . . . who worries about . . . what it would be like if. . .”
I fumble. I’m not as smooth with words as Peeta. And while I was talking, the idea of actually losing Peeta hit me again and I realized how much I don’t want him to die. And it’s not about the sponsors. And it’s not about what will happen back home.
And it’s not just that I don’t want to be alone. It’s him. I do not want to lose the boy with the bread.
“If what, Katniss?” he says softly.
I wish I could pull the shutters closed, blocking out this moment from the prying eyes of Panem. Even if it means losing food. Whatever I’m feeling, it’s no one’s business but mine.
“That’s exactly the kind of topic Haymitch told me to steer clear of,” I say evasively, although Haymitch never said anything of the kind. In fact, he’s probably cursing me out right now for dropping the ball during such an emotionally charged moment. But Peeta somehow catches it.
“Then I’ll just have to fill in the blanks myself,” he says, and moves in to me.
This is the first kiss that we’re both fully aware of. Neither of us hobbled by sickness or pain or simply unconscious. Our lips neither burning with fever or icy cold. This is the first kiss where I actually feel stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious.
This is the first kiss that makes me want another.
***In stark contrast to two nights ago, when I felt Peeta was a million miles away, I'm struck by his immediacy now. As we settle in, he pulls my head down to use his arm as a pillow; the other rests protectively over me even when he goes to sleep. No one has held me like this in such a long time. Since my father died and I stopped trusting my mother, no one else's arms have made me feel this safe.
***Go to sleep," he says softly. His hand brushes the lose strands of my hair off my forehead. Unlike the staged kisses and caresses so far, this gesture seems natural and comforting. I don't want him to stop and he doesn't. He's still stroking my hair when I fall asleep.
***He manages to wake me and calm me down. Then he climbs into bed to hold me until I fall back to sleep. After that, I refuse the pills. But every night I let him into my bed. We manage the darkness as we did in the arena, wrapped in each other’s arms, guarding against dangers that can descend at any moment
***I wish Peeta were here to hold me, until I remember I'm not supposed to wish that anymore. I have chosen Gale and the rebellion, and a future with Peeta is the Capitol's design, not mine.
***So what should we do with our last few days?”
“I just want to spend every possible minute of the rest of my life with you,” Peete replies.
“Come on, then,” I say, pulling him into my room.
It feels like a luxury, sleeping with Peeta again. I didn’t realize until now how starved I’ve been for human closeness. For the feel of him beside me in the darkness.
***I look up into those blue eyes that no amount of dramatic makeup can make truly deadly and remember how, just a year ago, I was prepared to kill him. Convinced he was trying to kill me. Now everything is reversed. I’m determined to keep him alive, knowing the cost will be my own life, but the part of me that is not so brave as I could wish is glad that it’s Peeta, not Haymitch, beside me
***Peeta and I sit on the damp sand, facing away from each other, my right shoulder and hip pressed against his.
After a while I rest my head against his shoulder. Feel his hand caress my hair.
"Katniss... If you die, and I live, there's no life for me at all back in District Twelve. You're my whole life", he says. "I would never be happy again."
I start to object but he puts a finger to my lips. "It's different for you. I'm not sayin it wouldn't be hard. But there are other people who'd make your life worth living." ... "Your family needs you, Katniss", Peeta says.
My family. My mother. My sister. And my pretend cousin Gale. But Peeta's intension is clear. That Gale really is my family, or will be one day, if I live. That I'll marry him. So Peeta's giving me his life and Gale at the same time. To let me know I shouldn't ever have doubts about it.
Everithing. That's what Peeta wants me to take from him.
"No one really needs me", he says, and there's no self-pity in his voice. It's true his family doesen't need him. They will mourn him, as will a handful of friends. But they will get on. Even Haymitch, with the help of a lot of white liquor, will get on. I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me.
"I do", I say. "I need you." He looks upset, takes a deep breath as if to begin a long argument, and that's no good, no good at all, because he'll start going on about Prim and my mother and everything and I'll just get confused. So before he can talk, I stop his lips with a kiss.
I feel that thing again. The thing I only felt once before. In the cave last year, when I was trying to get Haymitch to send us food. I kissed Peeta about a thousand times during those Games and after. But there was only one kiss that made me feel something stir deep inside. Only one that made me want more. But my head wound started bleeding and he made me lie down.
This time, there is nothing but us to interrupt us. And after a few attempts, Peeta gives up on talking. The sensation inside me grows warmer and spreads out from my chest, down through my body, out along my arms and legs, to the tips of my being. Instead of satisfying me, the kisses have the opposite effect, of making my need greater. I thought I was something of an expert on hunger, but this is an entirely new kind.
***As I drift off, I try to imagine that world, somewhere in the future, with no Games, no Capitol. A place like the meadow in the song I sang to Rue as she died. Where Peeta’s child could be safe.

    • @scahearn6279
      @scahearn6279 6 місяців тому +1

***When I wake, I have a brief, delicious feeling of happiness that is somehow connected with Peeta.
***By late afternoon I lie with my head in Peeta’s lap making a crown of flowers while he fiddles with my hair claiming he is practicing knots. After awhile his hands go still.
      “What?” I ask.
“I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever,” he says.
Usually this sort of comment, the kind that hints his undying love for me, makes me feel guilty and awful. But I’m so relaxed and beyond worrying about a future I’ll never have, I just let the word slip out.
“Okay,” I say. I can hear the smile in his voice. “Then you’ll allow it?”
      “I’ll allow it.
***When Peeta holds out his arms, I walk straight into them. It's the first time since they announced the Quarter Quell that he's offered me any sort of affection. He's been more like a very demanding trainer, always pushing, always insisting Haymitch and I run faster, eat more, know our enemy better. Lovers? Forget about that. He abandoned any pretense of even being my friend. I wrap my arms tightly around his neck before he can order me to do push-ups or something. Instead he pulls me in close and buries his face in my hair. Warmth radiates from the spot where his lips just touch my neck, slowly spreading through the rest of me. It feels so good, so impossibly good, that I know I will not be the first to let go.
***I like to watch his hands as he works, making a blank page bloom with strokes of ink, adding touches of color to our previously black and yellowish book. His face takes on a special look when he concentrates. His usual easy expression is replaced by something more intense and removed that suggests an entire world locked away inside him. I've seen flashes of this before: in the arena, or when he speaks to a crowd, or that time he shoved the Peacekeepers' guns away from me in District 11. I don't know quite what to make of it. I also become a little fixated on his eyelashes, which ordinarily you don't notice much because they're so blond. But up close, in the sunlight slanting in from the window, they're a light golden color and so long I don't see how they keep from getting all tangled up when he blinks.
***You're alive," I whisper, pressing my palms against my cheeks, feeling the smile that's so wide it must look like a grimace. Peeta's alive.
***Sometimes when I'm alone, I take the pearl from where it lives in my pocket and try to remember the boy with the bread, the strong arms that warded off nightmares on the train, the kisses in the arena.
***My mockingjay pin now lives with Cinna's outfit, but there's the gold locket and the silver parachute with the spile and Peeta's pearl. I knot the pearl into the corner of the parachute, bury it deep in the recesses of the bag, as if it's Peeta's life and no one can take it away as long as I guard it.
***It's impossible to be the Mockingjay. Impossible to complete even this one sentence. Because now I know that everything I say will be directly taken out on Peeta. Result in his torture. But not his death, no, nothing so merciful as that. Snow will ensure that his life is much more worse than death.
"Cut," I hear Cressida say quietly.
"What's wrong with her?" Plutarch says under his breath.
"She's figured out how Snow's using Peeta," says Finnick.
There's something like a collective sigh of regret from that semicircle of people spread out before me. Because I know this now. Because there will never be a way for me to not know this again. Because, beyond the military disadvantage losing a entails, I am broken.
Several sets of arms would embrace me. But in the end, the only person I truly want to comfort me is Haymitch, because he loves Peeta, too. I reach out for him and say something like his name and he's there, holding me and patting my back. "It's okay. It'll be okay, sweetheart." He sits me on a length of broken marble pillar and keeps an arm around me while I sob.
      "I can't do this anymore," I say.
      "I know," he says.
***I wrap my arms around his neck, feel his arms hesitate before they embrace me. Not as steady as they once were, but still warm and strong. A thousand moments surge through me. All the times these arms were my only refuge from the world. Perhaps not fully appreciated then, but so sweet in my memory, and now gone for ever.
***It's a long shot, it's suicide maybe, but I do the only thing I can think of. I lean in and kiss Peeta full on the mouth. His whole body starts shuddering, but I keep my lips pressed to his until I have to come up for air. My hands slide up his wrists to clasp his. "Don't let him take you from me."
Peeta's panting hard as he fights the nightmares raging his head. "No. I don't want to. . ."
I clench his hands to the point of pain. "Stay with me."
His pupils contract to pinpoints, dilate again rapidly, and then return to something resembling normalcy. "Always," he murmurs.
***I raise my left arm and twist my neck down to rip off the pill on my sleeve. Instead my teeth sink into flesh. I yank my head back in confusion to find myself looking into Peeta’s eyes, only now they hold my gaze. Blood runs from the teeth marks on the hand he clamped over my nightlock.
“Let me go!” I snarl at him, trying to wrest my arm from his grasp.
      “I can’t,” he says.
***Peeta and I grow back together. There are still moments when he clutches the back of a chair and hangs on until the flashbacks are over. I wake screaming from nightmares of mutts and lost children. But his arms are there to comfort me. And eventually his lips. On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that. So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real.

As I was reading some of the comments, I realized that I don't really remember the books or the movies....I mean of course I remember the major plot points but after that....nothing. The book was suggested to me by a coworker I used to work with because I love the Harry Potter series. I ended up reading the first two books in time for the first movie and then getting Mockingjay when it came out in preparation of the last movies. And in truth I did enjoy the movies and I think I found them slightly sad and depressing. I'm not a big fan of dystopian books or movies and I have tried many times to watch/read them but I end up stopping halfway through. When I think about it now, it's probably because this type of world could exist and realizing that I'm far more sensitive then I like, it's honestly hard to watch something that could be real. Anyway, I always appreciate your reactions and how you two make me reflect on my own feelings about different movies.

Also, (sorry another comment) when they rescue Peeta Katniss has a whole internal monologue about what to say when she sees him, what he is going to say, if he is going to tell her that he loves her, if he is going to kiss her and other romantic things :( which makes everything even sadder

An important movie as this is, there are some things they cut/changed in the movie that I do wish they hadn't -
. the fact that they replaced the torture of Katniss's prep team by D13 (she found them starved, beaten & chained up in small room, covered in thier own excrement after they took & hid some extra bread) & how that drove a wedge between her & Gale (who couldn't wrap he's head around why she seemed to care about them so much when they're job was to make kids look pretty before sending them to litrually kill eachother for thier entrainment) & replaced it with Effie being silly which (though I do of course love Elizabeth Banks) just seems very out touch with what this story is supposed to be about
. Before Anne was taken to D13 Finick was much more mentally unstable in the begining of the last book then he seems in the movie, to the point that he ran up to Katniss & Boggs, wanting to go on thier journey to D12 only for them to point out that he was only in he's underwear which made him start laughing & doing a sexy pose before Katniss managed to distract him by telling him that Beetee had made a new trident for him to train with & then later, when they're in the bunkers of D13 waiting for the attack to end, he starts teaching Katniss how to make rope patterns with her fingers as a form of therapy (because he's from the fishing district)
this is a small detail from way back in the first or second book but I only just remembered so here you go now -
. Katniss realises that even after so much time has passed in the games none of the male tributes have any facial hair (though, unlike the girls, they do still have body hair) & she wonders what chemicals they doused their faces with to make that possible & after what we find out about Finnick (& by extention probably other victors as well) in this movie one has to wonder about the Capital's fixation on youth.

Gale is not her cousin in the books. That was just a rumor that was started because people knew that Gale and Katniss were always hanging around each other and they didn’t want to give people any reason to not trust Peeta and Katniss’s love story

    • @Manon-nk4qu

I don't think it's necessarily a chemistry issue and more of a Jennifer Lawrence playing Katniss too well issue. Because Katniss refuses to show emotion ever, to the point where she doesn't even know what she's feeling half of the time outside of "keep Prim safe" and "try not to die". In the books this works because you can read her internal monologue. But in the movie she just looks super blank which means you don't really see what she's thinking when she's with either guy.

    • @birdiewolf3497
      @birdiewolf3497 2 місяці тому +1

@@Manon-nk4quRight Katniss was deeply depressed and traumatized. And Jennifer played to that. To say they have no chemistry is crazy. Like those press junkets went viral for a reason. It’s just that for Katniss, she did not give a damn about romance or sex at all. It was a bottom tier concern and then these men in her life were like “do you like me? 🥺” She couldn’t deal with the drama of it all. She does like/love Peeta, it is part of the reason she is so desperate for him to live. But again there is just a complete disconnect for Katniss. Some people can find love in a hopeless place, other people find the place too hopeless for all that.

what i find crazy when rewatching dystopian movies especially ones like the hunger games, we always hear people say 'this is so crazy', 'how can this exist in real life' - and now here we are literally living in a world where there is a genocide occurring right nowww

I actually like that they split the final film into two parts. I think they could have done it in one, but really would have needed to have it be a three hour experience. There's just too much happening in the final book to adapt it into a single two hour movie and do it all justice. That said, I do think you definitely start to feel the drag in Mockingjay pt. 2, so the two full films definitely are a little bit too long for what they were working with.
