Nah, you're right. They nailed the handling in the first game more than 10 years ago and haven't been able to reproduce it again. This game reminds me of Grid 2 but worse. Every car drives like a muscle car, even the formula cars.

Original GRID (2008) had this companion system and I remember having very first crappy one, win as a team was hard to achieve unless I send all the opponents flying off the track. Then I picked very good one which also had very high stat in "aggressive" and GT1 specialization and that man was a beast, he would not even consider letting me win in that race category
I pretty much completely agree with you. I was super excited for Grid because I LOVE Grid Autosport. I am disappointed by the lack of additional content. I hope they add this stuff in after launch. Also, the ability to choose what class of vehicle you want to race in online quick race would be very nice.

Thanks for the video guys!
this game is somewhat playable in the beginning, but I've put a few hours into it and I went from winning easily to not even being able to reach the podium. The physics are also really weird and if you just slightly steer, even when you're going 20mph, the car will go full send into a drift and into a wall, while the ai take the corners as smooth as butter. This game does have a decent car list though, but the gameplay is ass. The rewind feature is also only available a couple of times per race. I crash into a wall, then rewind and brake a little earlier and take the corner smoothly, and EVERYONE passes me, going like 80mph when my car can't even survive going 60. Please don't make the same $60 mistake I did. Don't buy this game, it's not worth $60. Hell, it's not even worth $20.

So from what I'm seeing with this one it's a reboot for those that truly missed the first one since they shut down online and we have much better hardware for graphics. For me aside from the racing sims I remember everything being compared to Grid. Your heart was always in your throat trying get by that car in front without tearing up your car or trying to stay in front knowing that they were coming for you and to sometimes cross the finish line and your car looked like it had been in smash up derby instead of a race!! I'm sure Codemasters have something else to add but I'm just glad to see the return of a great driving game!!
GRID 2019 looks like a sad case for a racing game series with such zest. The TOCA games were full of events, diverse disciplines and were characterful, challenging and fun. GRID came along and was grittier but immersive and rewarding, then GRID 2 kinda lost the edge, then Autosport came and went with moderate fanfare. Now 5 years later this one shows up and it's as exciting as going to sleep on a bed of needles.
I'm glad I kept reading the comments, you answered my questions, cause I loved the TOCA series and all except GRID 2, with it's twitchy handling. I'll WAIT for a deep price drop for GRID 2019. THANKS.
Oh heck yeah I like Grid. I STILL LOVE Grid on the PS3, the original first release on PS3 and my favorite game on there. I was definitely looking forward to Codemasters bringing it back on the PS4 so that we can play online.
I've always been a fan of the original Grid, and by extension, the original Dirt. They were more on the "life simulation-lite" side of the house where there was an actual story/career mode that you followed to conclusion where you would go back to your professional garage after you'd earned enough money to build it up and hire a crew (or back to your touring RV in the case of Dirt), you'd look at what was available to you and your crew race-wise, plan your next steps, square away your car, then you'd travel to the track and hit the races. I've kind of drifted away from them since they've dropped all of that superfluous atmosphere and moved to static arcade menus and track selectors. I also miss the way sponsors would fight for your attention as you won more races and would pay you bonuses depending on where you (AND your AI teammate) would place. I know that you said that you didn't care for "out-of-car experiences" and story in racers, but when done with a certain level of competence, they can add a lot to the experience. (i.e. Import Tuner Challenge) I miss hearing my manager in the OG Dirt talking to me as I booted up the game (especially since there were names that the game was programmed to pronounce...of which my name was one) saying "Welcome back Samuel. We have a listing of races ready for you and a few sponsors who are looking to back you." It offered a level of immediate immersion that the current generation of racers sadly opts to outright sidestep.
I was looking forward to this because the original Racedriver Grid is probably my favorite racing game of all time. Too bad it doesn't seem like even this installment will do it justice but I think I'll have some fun with the handling system. Codemasters always know what they're doing when it comes down to the core driving after all.
I've been wanting to get this for a while now but I've held off due to the price but it's currently on offer at the moment so I'm going to pick it up. It's nice to have a game like this to play when you only have a little bit of time to play. Another good review Jake. 🙂
2:07 "The game also has a limited rewind feature, popularized by other modern racing games" Uh... the limited part? Because iirc, Grid pretty much invented rewind.
Race Driver GRID (2009) was the first racing game to have the Rewind feature. Games like Forza Horizon aren't racing games. Yes, they have cars and you race, but the open world aspect and the constant dopamine rewards that pop up every five seconds is why they're more adventure games than racing games. People who like Forza Horizon games often say, they hate normal racing games. This is why GRID (2019) feels so bare bones, but it's what racing games used to be before they appealed to non-racing game fans, ironically.
Just completed grid1, the one from 2008. Holy hell, that game has so much more content than any new grid games. You wanna play first one over and over, these later 3 games? Not so much..
This looks great! But I need AAA racers to make a real comeback. Burnout Revenge is and will always be the best arcade racer I've ever played. These hybrids aka arcade/simulator aren't good to me, the physics always overtake the driving. To me, the market is oversaturated with simulator sports games, I just wanna have unrestricted fun again like I did in the PS2/Xbox gen.
would have been nice to see some of the UI and see how similar it is too the 08 version. Original Grid was my top favorite game forever and i still hold it dear to this day. the main thing i didn't like about grid 2 was the fact that I couldn't just go buy whatever car i wanted when i had the money and i wanna know whether or not they made the same mistake in this game. boiled down to it's core Grid '08 is a whole lot better than all the new racers in terms of feel. (I also personally miss the team aspect and the nemesis challenge. those were two features that were very prominent in the old game)
loved the original GRID and was shocked of a new reboot, yet in steam seems to have pretty much mixed reviews, but the more I watch....I'm tempted to buy
The Grid franchise is cool.. I been playin since TOCA Race Driver 2. Only thing I dont care for in all tha games is no matter if you are going 30 mph or 150 mph the wheels always seem to spin at the same speed in all the games. But im jus a Nitpicker.
I don't think we ever needed a reboot. All we needed was a remaster. Take Skyrim for example. All it needed was a 64-bit rework, native mod support and a flurry of graphical improvements without tampering gameplay and Skyrim: Special Edition was created. It was still played by the original game's fanbase, despite just being a repeat of the same story that the original game had. A modern look, probably more cars/tracks and a dedicated fanbase might just be what we really need for the GRID franchise.
while i wait for grid, imma play driveclub, cant believe i waited all dese yrs to play it, in my book, best ps4 racer ive played, but for grid, if they had brought back the team system from the first, then it would have been way more viable all in all, looks fun, cant wait to get it!
I can't give Jake too much flak for not being a sim racing aficionado but Grid is arcade through and through. I would love to see Gameranx fully invest in a ffb wheel and try their hand at Assetto Corsa or iRacing, not even necessarily as reviews but more to see how well they emulate real life compared to these arcade racers.
Ok. So here it goes: PROS 1) Game is very very optimized and smooth on the PC with Any Hardware. Its really admirable. 2) Looks very good in rain. Apart from that its quite subjective. I wont say its the best looking racing game. coz its clearly not. 3) Car Roster is good enough. 4) Racing is engaging and sometimes in difficulty set to high its really challenging CONS 1) No variable weather 2) Very very limited content. Very Few Tracks and Race Modes (Race and Time Attack) 3) For a game released by Codemasters, it really doesn't have the graphics to follow. Sure it is very detailed but overall apart from rain and some night scenarios its not that great looking. as compared to Forza7 or Dirt Rally 2 or even Project Cars 3. 4) Racing is not at all engaging, the cars feel like they are on rails. They handle decently, like they used to in Autosport but thats about it. For instance in a sim-cade like Project Cars 3, even with all the bugs, the racing is very very engaging and the physics model is very fun with oversteers, drifts, weight transfers, etc. Its clearly not there in GRID..its a very accessible game indeed. 5) Main menu or the presentation in general is very lame. No dramatic music. verdict: GRID is a very refined and optimized racer which will get the racing souls out there excited but the lack of content, race modes and overall presentation is lacking character. If only they could do a re-release of the original GRID i.e. remastered. It would've faired better.
Bought it with summer sale discount on the ps store and not totally happy with the game. If I wouldn't know any other grid game , I might have been happy with this one. But the fact that there are no tasks to get sponsorships, the career mode is boring, drifting is so hard to do now and than I need to buy three more seasons to get more cars and tracks, just so that the career mode can continue ... it's just not the same anymore. A downgrade from Racedriver Grid, which I used to love so much. Where is the crash derby ? I loved smashing all the cars there 😭 And driving full speed into the barricade was just more fun in the Racedriver Grid than here. Or dragging the other driver into them, just to secure my number one spot in the race. It's just not the same anymore
I played Grid Ultimate on XSX. Started with the Hypercar Season 3 and worked my way back to GT Season 2, Hatches Season 1 and Original Career. I finished the hypercar season, did many gt races and just a few hatches ones. Didn't do much of the original career, found the cars underwhelming. Alrhough I had fun overall, my problem is car handling can be treacherous around corners. Even in a straight line when breaking heavily, I had difficulties keeping some hypercars on the track, like the Koenigseg Jesko on a wet track in China, for example. Many corners feel like I have to fight against the slippery car. A small tap from another car will easily throw me off the track. Terrible car physics. It's a shame because the game looks great and feels super fast at 60 fps. The atmosphere is also good, kind of gritty. Some tracks look incredible with tons of eye candy. I will be trying the 2022 Legends soon. I really hope they've sorted out the lacklustre car handling around bends.
doesnt really sound like an upgrade from previous games, but perhaps a good step forward for newer games or maybe a spin-off with some story behind it, similar to nfs?
Can’t even customize your car really + the wack tuning doesn’t cut it for me... so disappointed ☹️ had to get my refund asap. Grid 2 will forever be the best 😭
1:12 Don't you just hate it when the cockpit rev counter and the hud rev counter don't match up? Ive seen this in so many car games and it drives me crazy. How difficult is it to sync the two and how do you know which one is correct?
The only way I was going to buy this was if it did something truly different and interesting. If all it can offer is solid, fun driving I'm still playing Forza 7, GT Sport and Project CARS 2, which is enough for me.
Looks nice however after playing forza motor sport or horizon i feel like i dont need any more races, forza is too complete already,id still give this a try
Palms are sweaty, knees weak arms are heavy. There is vomit on his sweater already, car spagetti. He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready to drive fast, but he keeps on forgetting what the line is. The whole crowd goes so loud, he starts the engine but the battery is out. He's choking how, everybody's joking now. The clock's run out, Time's up over blaow! Snap back to reality oh there goes the controller. Oh and the screen he choked. He's so mad, but he won't give up that easy? No He won't have it, he knows he is reall fast. It don't matter, he's dope, he knows that, but he's broke. (That's all there is)
I love aspects of the game but it feels like they've rushed it for launch. The multiplayer just isn't good enough with only a "quick play" option and needs improvements in future patches
I miss the good old days of racing games where you can fully upgrade everything on your car, i.e brakes, wheels, body kits, turbos/superchargers, stage 1 through 3 chips and internal components etc etc..
Miracle I've still never beaten and it's probably around my 5th favorite game, but NFS Most Wanted will always be my favorite racing game. Midnight Clip will always be my favorite racing series of games. Others may not be able to square that circle but I can.
UA-cam ruined the quality of the video a bit - the game looks pretty good in person.

Seems like a barebone GRID. May wait for a sale.
£13.74 on ps plus now. Should i get it?
I just bought it today and I’m loving it
@@DavidLopez-yp9fb Did you buy the standard edition or the ultimate?
Might wait to get this when it's on sale and hopefully by then, there will be more content.
My Favorite UA-camr Keep It up Love your videos!
AI drivers in GRID will literally throw you into a wall it's so awesome to be in a mini battle within a race with another driver
you can tell they didn't bother with any suspension dynamics at all, car looks like it floats and the pavement just flows by
the game is currently on sale on the PSN store for $15.99 USD
This video and the comments makes me feel like no one played grid the first one
recently played it it's great racing gaming im glad they gave it away for free before removing it from store
First time playing a grid game. Definitely enjoy the way the vehicle acts and sounds. Having a good time so far.
You'll enjoy the previous ones more in that case
loved the old gris drifting
FINALLY A 60FPS VIDEO from GAMERANX
Loved this video, i loved Driveclub on the ps4 and this seems like a more polished version of it and I’m really looking forward to it
Would love to see a 4k remaster of Grand Turismo 3.
chilled out relaxed racer with fun gameplay. As a racing fan probably a buy although i feel like the amount of content doesnt fully justify the price.
2:07 "The game also has a limited rewind feature, popularized by other modern racing games"
Uh... the limited part?
Grid is the only racing game to really ever offer a challenge to me, I love it!
Will buy in a psn sale in about 6 months for half the price. Looks good.
A modern look, probably more cars/tracks and a dedicated fanbase might just be what we really need for the GRID franchise.
missed that great mom's spaghetti chance
I played it on my ps3 before and i loved it. Im sure im gonna buy it to my ps4 soon.
Wake me up when they make TOCA 4
wake ME up when they bring the new assetto corsa to ps4
@@inevitablecraftslab Alarm clock or car exhaust?
@@FarmYardGaming both! :)
while i wait for grid, imma play driveclub, cant believe i waited all dese yrs to play it, in my book, best ps4 racer ive played, but for grid, if they had brought back the team system from the first, then it would have been way more viable all in all, looks fun, cant wait to get it!
I'm not a huge racing fan but I'll pick it up
Ok. So here it goes:
PROS
1) Game is very very optimized and smooth on the PC with Any Hardware. Its really admirable.
2) Looks very good in rain. Apart from that its quite subjective. I wont say its the best looking racing game. coz its clearly not.
3) Car Roster is good enough.
4) Racing is engaging and sometimes in difficulty set to high its really challenging
CONS
1) No variable weather
2) Very very limited content. Very Few Tracks and Race Modes (Race and Time Attack)
3) For a game released by Codemasters, it really doesn't have the graphics to follow.
I always wanted to play a racing game but i think that this game is a good choice for me
Dirt rally lol
@@sammson6106 okay....
why
It's a really good racing game that I personally like.
The original game had such a great career mode. Shame on you Codemasters! Just give us an HD remaster
I loved smashing all the cars there 😭
And driving full speed into the barricade was just more fun in the Racedriver Grid than here. Or dragging the other driver into them, just to secure my number one spot in the race. It's just not the same anymore
Loved the balance of arcade/sim of Grid on PS3. Hopes this doesn’t disappoint.
I'm going to be getting this when I get my Stadia account. Thanks for the review.
I’ll wait till Black Friday, but it actually does look really great
I know you touched on changing specs, but can you UPGRADE your cars in "career mode"?
doesnt really sound like an upgrade from previous games, but perhaps a good step forward for newer games or maybe a spin-off with some story behind it, similar to nfs?
I’m kinda sad they don’t have Lamborghini in the game but it’s understandable
Gameranx, u guy's are awesome!
I mean really awesome 😁
Can’t even customize your car really + the wack tuning doesn’t cut it for me... so disappointed ☹️ had to get my refund asap. Grid 2 will forever be the best 😭
1:12 Don't you just hate it when the cockpit rev counter and the hud rev counter don't match up? Ive seen this in so many car games and it drives me crazy. How difficult is it to sync the two and how do you know which one is correct?
Take the driving and physics model of grid 2019 and pair it with the music and soul of grid 2 and it will be perfect
I’m enjoying grid ultimate edition. Handling is a bit funky takes a bit to get used too but still heaps of fun. Shadow keep before you buy one day 😉
The only way I was going to buy this was if it did something truly different and interesting. If all it can offer is solid, fun driving I'm still playing Forza 7, GT Sport and Project CARS 2, which is enough for me.
Reminds me of gran truismo. Played nfs payback like a month ago. Oh man. That games all over the place
Correction grid invented the rewind feature just fyi back on pc when original grid released around the time of first dirt game
So; Forza, Gran Turismo, pretty sure need for speed, midnight club LA on ps3 and x360.
So most of the racing games out today?
I'll wait for NFS Heat but this looks really good too.
Miracle same
Miracle I've still never beaten and it's probably around my 5th favorite game, but NFS Most Wanted will always be my favorite racing game. Midnight Clip will always be my favorite racing series of games. Others may not be able to square that circle but I can.
I wish there was more than just 3 racetracks in this game.
