Hey all, originally this video was a much more in depth retrospective like my previous ones. However, I just didn’t like how the original script was coming out. So, I decided to focus on the decline of the series instead. Let me know if you liked this change to a mini retrospective, or if you would have preferred a more indepth one!
I also want to give a shoutout to @icaro9554 for the brand new intro! You can check out his work at his Twitter: twitter.com/icarogabriel17

Something that I will always love about the GRID series is how the races felt more alive and unexpected. For instance the AI would sometimes crash out, have tire & engine blowouts, and even battle each other which made the races all the more thrilling. However it is quite a shame to see how over the years, each game could bring something new but fail to deliver the same experience as Race Driver: GRID. Great video Alex, love the outro too!

Yeah as someone who's not into serious sims or arcade racers I really enjoyed Race Driver Grid. I enjoyed the team management, livery customization with sponsors, it added RPG element. The game felt Cinematic, like you're roleplaying in "Days of Thunder" especially with the cockpit view. When I heard Grid 2 didn't have Cockpit view I lost interest and never went back to the series. Looking at Grid Legends they added those glow guides and boosters... that makes it too arcady for me than the more balanced feel of the original Grid.

They could no longer capture the grid 1 scene because the main heads behind the development of the game left codemasters, after their departure they created the studio playground games, which has been under the development of forza horizon ever since. Also those people were under the development of the toca race driver series, colin mcrae dirt 1 and colin mcrae dirt 2, and also maybe that's the reason why the environment and scene of forza horizon 1 is very similar to the environment of dirt 2

RaceDriver:Grid - Almost perfect game. I have some issues with it ("unicorns" in multiplayer, weird car behaviour in collisions, easy economy making team management unnecessary way too soon, lack of lower performing cars and somewhat weird behaviour after breaking traction of rear wheels). Definitely my favourite in the series, especially with mods adding cut/platform exclusive content. Regular drift cars on togue feels so great, it's weird it wasn't included in the base game.
Grid 2 - All issues of first Grid remained while most of strengths were weakened/removed completely. Still had a lot of fun with it, especially online with friends but it was clean downgrade with a lot of issues. Upgrades were horrible and destroyed multuplayer ballance completely.
Grid Autosport - I really like it, however it was a missed opportunity. Lack of innovation, boring presentation, handling model that lacked "personality" of one from the first game or depth of other simcades/sims on the market, released on old gen consoles with almost no marketing way too soon after launch of Grid 2. If it was given additional time in the oven, it might turned out great, as general idea behind it was (IMO) the right one.
Grid [2019] - Dissapointment on all fronts. Peaky tire model, awful too stiff suspension, some cars were slower on straights than their IRL counterparts, werid selection of cars for certain classes, lackluster and unnececssary tuning/setup options, lack of content, style, dumbed down damage model etc.
Grid Legends - I admit I was positively surprised by this one. It improved on all 2019's issues (except for suspension and tuning/upgrades) while not adding new ones. However dumbed down damage model, somewhat weird, twitchy behaviour of some cars, weird car choices (like why do you need 2 classes with both retro and current muscle cars instead of separating them etc.)
If we ever get another Grid game, it should return to the roots of the series and be return to "RaceDriver" name. It should have a lot of effort put into delivering "show". More advanced damage model, a lot of smoke/sparks and debris, softer suspension making weight transfer more visible and "dance" around the suspension (like in original 3 Grid games/PGR series), exagerated slipstream to help in bunching cars together, smaller but more thought out car list on launch (Cars in the same class should be more related to each other and separated from different classes. If any DLC in the future adds new classes, it should provide at least 1 "free" car for said class to avoid splitting multiplayer playerbase and provide "demo" for people interesting for said DLC). Car list should be focused on racing classes that provide close wheel to wheel action first, so mostly touring cars and stock cars (also returning to RaceDriver/TOCA series' roots). It would be great to see codemasters use their expertise with loose surface handling models by including rallycross/baja events (similar to racing events from original CMR:Dirt).
P.S. Whatever they do next, they should continue their emphasis on making AI fun. Little bit more aggression would be appreciated, as well as improving their behaviour during random failures. Tire/engine blowouts would be much better if their chances were related to current state of the car (mostly damage and maybe added maintance system in team management) and could happen to the player. Also AI mistakes should be rewritten - they should include much more "smaller" mistakes like locking up, going off track but only slightly, catching little slides etc. (maybe with pressure mechanic making AI "tired" the longer fight for a place takes place). The spins should be changed completely, as currently (in all games they were included) they happen in really weird places and in really unbelievable ways, most of time break the immersion instead of adding to it.

Audi R10 beats anything, Corvette C5's overpowered if you buy it new, Dodge Viper is Dodge Viper, etc etc... But the main issue that caused the decline was the physics model. The second was the lack of a first person camera. It returned but the interior detail was atrocious. As was everything else. Codemasters failed to capitalise on what made the original great - Physics, gameplay, damage model, team management.

I thought the first GRID hit the sweet spot between arcade and simulation. So confident was that game that it had both a mode where you could not touch the competing vehicle as well as demolition derby. It took a long time to get used to the drift handling of the sequel as well as its progression system. Autosport seemingly overcorrected in this area, removing all semblance of a plot and returning to grippier handling. I appreciate the production values that went into 2019 and especially Legends, but are still both missing the 'IT' factor that the first GRID does. It's hard to have car manufacturers let you damage their vehicles the way the first one did and the racing genre is just different from when the first game came out. Still, I hope EA/Codemasters continues the series.

I played autosport , 2 and 2019 and i got to say that they feel just like another simcade racing game. Plus the new entries don't have a lot of gameplay from the original (touge lemans even drifting). If you ask me you want to revive the series? Release GRID remastered with just better graphics it's the best move at the moment. I feel like it’s the damage models. Really, think about it. What Autosport had going for it., was that it, at times, had Burnout levels of Crashes wilst still pursuing that simulation feel, with on track racing, Penalty systems and mecanical damage system after a a collision. This created a game that us simulation game fans could enjoy, but still have it feel like a holleywood interpretation. Them moving away from the damage systems they had I think killed the franchise. Kids who love arcade games all of a sudden didn’t have great crashes anymore. And the people that loved racing sims didn’t get their popcorn-time game anymore. I know it has to do with licensensing. But to hell with it. When I play a racing sim. It has to be an actual sim. When I crash into wall at the speed of 200 kmph, I want my car to turn into a pancake and my tires flying in the distance. Some of these so called sims like GT and forza, you actually just continue driving with some scratches. That is something, for a sim I just cannot accept. I know you’re not supposed to crash your car left and right. But not having the fear of collision actually eliminates risk a real life race would have. For sure you’ll lose some seconds braking late and bumper kissing the car in front of you. It might cost you a position or 2. But realism for me is actually have the risk of not finishing at all because of that one error. And that is something I felt Grid autosport nailed. Albeit not optimal. It was for sure heading in the right direction with that one. Then they decided to eliminate that 1 thing that made Grid stand out from the rest of the pack. And in doing so eliminating the reason to buy this game over any other Sim-like game out there with better licenses.

I couldn't have said it better my dude. The main reason I didn't like the GRID and Grid Legends is the awful crash physics. I love Grid Autosport, why you ask? I turn my entire hud off (which I get 2% more XP) and when I do a nasty crash I always ask it with radio (increase of immersion) and hearing what parts did I damage makes me feel connected to that race. Sometimes the radio guy says "try not to damage your left side anymore it's pretty banged up" or somethings like that, I love hearing that because now I have 1 more goal it's to escape from crashes and actually finishing the race. Damn... I'm gonna miss this feeling so much, I am gonna miss Grid...

I 100%-d GRD (2019) recently (excluding some 'Do 500 X' career milestones), and good god this game is FANTASTIC! Stunning visuals, excellent career, great car list, and brilliant engaging (and actually fun to drive) physics & handling, I never expected it to be THAT good. Tbh it even feels better than Legends which always felt to me a bit off, and when compared to GRID (2019) Grid Legends is just... boring, and dull with its lackluster car physics, and somewhat bland chase camera.
Despite GL is obviously a better looking game visually, I still prefer the more gritty stylized look of GRID (2019).

The first GRiD game had the best story mode in the entire racing game genre.
... what, it's just "raise money to fund your own team, then beat all competitions with it"? Yes, but anything more complex than that will utterly fail because you can't interrupt the gameplay for a cutscene without it ending up annoying.

The simplification of the flashback system was what killed it for me in GRID 2, and its where i dropped the series. i loved the original flashback system because it felt like you were a racing driver who was considering every corner, and constantly thinking about the race. that crash you had? it never happened, it was just something your driver COULD have done. the ability to rewind to ANY moment was also great, because you could play it safe and go all the way back, but you also had the option to risk it and see what would happen if you made just one TINY change instead. GRID 2 feels boring because its just an undo button for when you slam into the wall, and there's no fine control of where you rewind to. Also, the lap penalty system sucks for me because i loved going into a corner way too fast, taking a shortcut and just sliding into the side of someone to brake.

IMO, all they needed to do was take Race Driver Grid, update and expand the car and track list (Dubai's under construction buildings were still being constructed in Legends, 3 games after it's debut ind Grid 2) add new features and events, update the graphics, and they would've had a well received game.
Or just make 2 and Autosports' multiplayer careers be the single player career. Having 2 separate careers for each game was unnecessary.

Grid 2 "Brake to drift" - You drift reglardles. I got it from reseller on steam and tried it out on G29. This is probably the most Confused game I ever played. It has Semi-SIm feel yet you can't even change major car settings, you can't change basicly nothing about handling, tires. gears, no upgrades. You get a car and here you go. Drive it! Many cars would be great if I could change the gear-ratio from long to short. This makes the game very frustrating because it is a semi-sim and even if you like the car you wont use on some tracks because you know the gear ratio on it is bad for that track.

Im coping hard, i love GRID to death, ive played all except for Legends and Race Driver Grid is my fav always and will be, but if they do a final grid game they need to make it violent and brutal, kind of what shift did for need for speed, make the racing terrifying but also utterly thrilling and heart pumping in anycar, from a simple hatchback to the monster prototypes. Team management is obviously a must, something like what f1 is doing but not entirely like it. I just want this series to keep going but ik thats not going to happen, so id rather have them make one last grid game and put all their carda into it. But that would be asking alot...

Personally I can understand why people mainly praise the first game because it’s definitely the best game in the series but at the same time I do think that Grid 2 is overlooked and under appreciated. Despite it being a slight departure from the first game and the previous ToCA series it still nailed the most important part of a Grid/ToCA game for me and that’s actually being immersed in the world of professional motorsports while still being accessible for those who want that kind of experience without having to play a full blown racing sim

    • @GamerAlexVideos
      @GamerAlexVideos  Рік тому

GRID 2 is a weird one for me because despite having that motorsport aesthetic, the handling and physics feel so disconnected from it. Like, you have drift handling from something like Burnout/NFS, with physics that feel like the light cars from FlatOut 2... So, it's hard for me to feel 'immersed' when everything about controlling the car does NOT feel like any track racer or GRID game I've played.

    • @TyCal_
      @TyCal_ Рік тому +2

@@GamerAlexVideos It’s funny because the fact that it’s a track racer that plays nothing like a typical track racer is half the reason why I’ve come to like the game more and more over the years. But yeah, I do understand how the handling model can take someone out of the experience. I was very much in that same boat for years but then one day I randomly replayed the game and something just clicked with me.
Edit: There is a mod that removes the drift physics from the game and makes the them feel like a slightly more forgiving version of Autosport’s physics. I would recommend playing the game with that mod at least once

    Pt 2....
Grid 2 2013. WTH!?!?!?!? AT LAST!!!!!
After a 5 year hiatus we got news of this game incoming, it all LOOKED good and ended up very popular ~5 million sales, scoring 83% avg.
For fans of the original game this was tragically bad, instead of a game requiring real world racecraft and a grip style for racing, this was a drift to win racer yet, paradoxically, the drifting was like tea-trays on ice with only point to point drift tracks with staggered launches, so, no chance of tandem drifting and the scoring system utterly destroyed.
Result? The original "Gridders" abandoned it and again the forums ended up a battleground of love/hate for the game.
The Grid "identity crisis" was born...

I play Race driver Grid, Grid 2, and Grid Autosport on a PS3 and love all three, but for different reasons. Race driver Gird is absolutely brutal! It throw it all at you and is great fun, frustrating and exciting. It is a true video game, one where you have to adapt to survive. Grid 2 is much the same but a little more kind on the track and still needs you to be "in the game". Autosport is a little more kind, and has more structure to gaming progress. All have great graphics, though Race driver has a yellow tone commonly called a piss filter that CodeMasters dropped for the other two games, thankfully.
I was a Gran Turismo player for years, starting with the first on a the original Playstation, I loved GT4, but after many years they have lost their appeal somewhat. They now seem boring and a little sedate though I still plat GT5 and GT6 occesionally, but for true fun on the road Grid in it's three PS3 version is where I turn for instant fun and excitement.
