- SNAKE SOUP in Hong Kong episode 1: • Hong Kong's BEST Stree...
Welcome to the second episode of our Hong Kong street food series. Today, we will be showing you some of the best and affordable street food and local, traditional food you can find in the Sham Shui Po area, a district that preserves the feel of Old Hong Kong - where the locals live!
To start our day, we have a traditional beef sandwich with a Hong Kong style milk tea (total 37 HKD / 4.71 USD). The beef was juicy and tender. No extra sauce needed! We explore the Sham Shui Po market for tons of shopping and locate a rare street food at a shop specializing in soy bean. We had fried tofu chunks stuffed with fish paste. It was awesome watching the chefs prepare the tofu. This snack was so delicious and CHEAP (15 HKD / 1.91 USD for 5 pieces). And of course, we washed it down with fresh soy milk (7 HKD / 0.89 USD). Continuing through the street food market, we came by a Cantonese classic dish - cheong fun! This stall was unique however because the shape of the cheong fun (10 HKD / 1.27 USD for small) was rolled into small bites like the Korean street food Tteokbokki. Such a great street food to enjoy in a small Hong Kong alleyway! To end the day, we eat at one of the most important street food restaurants in all of Hong Kong, at a dai pai dong. Dai pai dong’s are quite important because they are quickly disappearing off the streets and becoming modernized. There are only a few left that truly preserve the culture of Hong Kong and Oi Man Sang is one of the few! We had Hong Kong style clams, beef and rice street side! It all was mouthwatering and the chefs were cooking right on the street (298 HKD / 37.96 USD including beers).
Thanks for joining us on another INSANE street food adventure in Hong Kong! More street food to come very soon! Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss any episode! Thanks for watching!

Hey you guys, so good to see you guys again and Hong Kong looks amazing, great adventure! 😃👍
Thanks Jade! We always have a blast in HK!
I was in Sham Shui Po Tai Nan Street just an hour ago. Its crazy hot today and packed with domestic helpers (Sunday holiday) shopping around the second hand market.
Yesterday i had some chill Tsing Tao beer with claypot rice on Apliu street near C2 exit. Sunday is crazy packed, i'll be there in the evening for some beer. Yaaay !!!
@@justhappenedtowalkby3709 The temperature in Hong Kong has been kept rising for resent years, thanks to climate change. So, unless you are a beach guy, I won't recommend you to visit to Hong Kong from May to September. In the old days, April and May was definitely good for picnic and travel around in Hong Kong, not too hot, hot too humid. But now, it's melting hot in May..
☆Good☆
Love you channel; you stay humble, no sponsors, no fake review, not overacting, great tips.
Thanks Francis!
I use to watch the other ones until the unreal sounds got on the nerves.
Kudos to you! As a Hongkonger who works at this very district in Hong Kong, you've done a great job in recommending some truly local street foods here. Anyone planning to visit Hong Kong should watch this series of videos to taste the best food Hong Kong has to offer (if you don't mind the heat and the non-so-hygienic environment)
I love how genuine you guys are, not like being overtly dramatic in expression when eating. I think just seeing you guys explore the city and show us around is a really nice break after studying in my room all day. Thanks for the entertainment!
Your video really brings up my childhood memories. Sham shui po is where I grow up and I lived there for almost 10 years before I moved out!
Wah!! Clams in black bean sauce!!!
And, special Fried Rice! Double drool like Homer Simpson!!!
🤤😛❤️
Great thumbs up guys!! Liking your good manners, your content and the style in which you promote so respectfully! Hong kong is my heritage and I lived there for 10 years. The background sounds make me miss my city not to mention craving for fooooood!!
Oops, hungry again at 0040am, after watching this pop up video!!
I was salivating when you described the taste of those food. I will definitely visit those eateries when I visit Hong Kong in Christmas.
Great introduction to the local food scene. Keep your VLOGS coming.
Yes me too yum! yum!
Thanks for sharing . Very in depth comments. I will try this pace again next time when I m in town. Stay safe and keep up with the good videos
Everything looks so good. Chinese food is the best, so many variety and flavors.
The shot when Luke finishes the sugerfree soy milk is awesome, nice editing guys! i like that Sabrina is more involved in the video, keep it up you to, -love Norway
That fried tofu with fish paste looks sooooo amazing! I think it would be my first choice to give it a try; I also liked those rice noodle rolls with all the different sauces!
Both were awesome! Thank you!
Both were awesome! Thank you!
Man, that fried rice and the beef with potatoes looks heavenly. I might just have to go to Hong Kong just to eat that.
A splendid food journey with sandwich, tofu and rice flour roll that complements a hearty meal. That Dai Pai Dong stall absolutely impressed me the most cuz the clams doused with savoury sauce that packed a sharp punch of umami.A good combination with a glass of beer.
Thanks Lucy it was an amazing dai pai dong
I grew up in Sham Shui Po & that tofu shop was one of my favorite spots! Crazy (good) that you guys chose SSP as a featured area for good grubs. It's literally 99 percent locals & 1 percent travelers who know what they're doing lol They have more than food, also lots of electronic/gadgetry bargain places. You can find just about any movie/song/video and play them on the latest gadgets for a fraction of cost anywhere else!! Thanks for the memory lane stroll, Luke & Sabrina 😊
Yes I saw all those gadgets! Very nostalgic
I visit SSPo on daily basis on my morning jog (I live in MeiFoo). You never know what you will find on the street floor early in the morning around 7 am on Yen Chow street. Yesterday i bought six cans of Asahi beer for $5 from an old lady. Other old lady was putting on display a tons of porn cds alongside with dozens of BNO passports for sale. She probably doesn't know what she was selling ha ha ha ...
No, it is a ritual and nothing to do with cleaning the dishes. It is just to sort of sterilise the utensils and cups and bowls. Very popular in Cantonese style eatery in Malaysia too.
Ha ha... apparently the dishes are sort of clean.... 🤣🤣💩💩🤣🤣
they also do it in mainland china, apparently water is not clean so even though the dishes and chopsticks were pre-washed, it's customary to use hot water to sterilize them.
The hot water would not do much to kill off the germs (much less sterilize the dishes). I think sometimes it may be better just to leave the dishes and utensils alone, because pouring the hot water on them just stirs up whatever that's on the surface.
@@xpaperxcutx4588 that way you know for sure
@@msbrownbeast I bet that hot water if there is enough will kill ass. That is good enough to kill off microscopic germs and bacteria.
LOL, I can see Sabrina starting to salivate as she is describing the egg/beef sandwich haha! Don't blame her, it does look darn good and was already salivating myself watching Luke's description.
Thanks for another awesome vlog guys and im so happy to be seeing Sabrina in them more. The tofu looked great and the guy cutting it was cool, very precise. I love Korean rice cakes so id definitely be trying that if i ever get to Hong Kong. Thanks again for a great watch and stay safe
Absolutely love how honest you guys are with the reviews! Not to mention, the cinematic shots are just getting better and better!! By far one of my favorite channels on UA-cam!! I'm also heading to Taiwan for the first time this summer, and can't wait to visit some of the places you guys have recommended :)
Come across your video today, weird UA-cam algorithm lol
Anyways, I used to live in Sham Shui Po for nearly 10 years before I moved back to Canada. I born in HK then immigrated to Canada then back to HK to work for 10 years. Sham Shui Po definitely changed a lot since then! If I may, I would love to add some information of the food you had.
1)Sun Hang Yuen, their fresh beef scramble egg sandwich, both bread used to be not toasted. Secondly, their beef with scramble egg was double that size! Yes, double! The reason why their beef are tasty is because they have marinated it, it boosts the taste and favours in it.
2)公和 is more than 50 years old, all their products are freshly made each day and they maintain their quality very well throughout the years. You guys should have try the soya pudding (hot), that is one of the famous dish! The smoothness and melt-in-your-mouth texture is one of its kind, too bad you guys missed that...
3)合益泰 steam rice roll has two unique factors, first is their rice roll are freshly made in a factory every single day, the ratio of rice and water is in the perfect texture. Secondly, have you wonder why it tastes soooo good with the sauce? The secret is simple - they added lark (pig fat) with that peanut paste which add its aroma and smoothness into the overall texture. (Note that there is another kind of steam rice roll which is freshly made, that texture is completely different than this one you have)
4)愛文生 Dai Pai Dong I am glad you did not go to those at Women's market, I'm not saying they are bad but here at this one is where you can experience one of the best taste of dish and also the whole atmosphere along the street. Not much I could add to the food you have because there are way too many to mention, my only 'advice' would be any dish involve with that wok cooking lol That is the soul of Dai Pai Dong food, everything was 'forged' through fire.
Peace out~ :D
Nice street food video my friend Looks great Thanks for this very nice video my friend and Hello from FRANCE 🍚🍄💖💖🍚🍄💖😍🍄💖🍚
Good Documentary Food. I like the way he bring it. Especially when he was in Oi Man Sang eat a Hongkong Fried Rice. I can feel it the way he eat it. Smoky good flavoured fried rice nowadays is like a treasure. Rare to find and get it. Stay safe and healthy you both.
HimLuke and Sabrina, thanks for a great video..I'm surprised at how affordable the food is in Hong Kong..👍🏼☃️👏🏻😋
Sham Shui Po has great prices compared to other areas! Thanks for watching!
My korean buddy said:Coeng fan just became one of my favourite breakfast when i worked in china.........so simple,so delicious, and so comfortable
Amazing food video
Thank you so much!
Simple food but made to perfection
You guys are amazing❤ Keep up the good work👍🏼 lots of love from Pakistan❤
Really enjoy that Ice Milk Tea & Soy Milk too. Cheung Fun(Rice Noodle Roll) With all those sauces have always been my favorites. Their beef is definitely tender and have no fat in the meat. Yang Chow Fried Rice is one of their specials Rice Dish in Dai Pai Dong Menu.
You guys always make me crave food I’ve never had or heard of. I need to find some Cheong Fun, looks so good 😋
That is our goal!!! Awesome. Cheong fun is so good and a light snack :) Thanks so much for watching!
I used to have it for breakfast when I was a child in HK. Miss it so much!
hey, your channel is amazing
that looks awesome.
Keep Sharing
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Everything in this video looks absolutely delicious. I'm gonna to check out all these eateries when I'm in HKG this Nov. Thanks a million, Luke & Sabrina!!!
Well done, excellent video, always entertaining, always a nice surprise to see the both of you, stay healthy my friends 🤗👍👍👍
As always, thanks so much Dennis!!!
Thank you for the recommendations! Love your production work with very journalistic and informational notes. Both of your onscreen presence is fun to watch!!
Fried rice wow.......my favorite......great job
Much better than snake soup
All of that was interesting and the food looked very good.. I liked the Fried rice and the Breakfast sandwich.. Peace
Glad you enjoyed Cecil!
Every time , my husband and I take an vacation to Hong Kong, we must order some Roasted Piglet every other day😍
Amazing! You can use chopiticks quite well! Even some Chinese/eastern Asian cannot use chopsticks as well as you.
you really a gourmet. I am a Hong Konger. Most of the tourist don't know such local food. Only local Hongkonger know this. Steam Rice roll, Tai Pai Dong, Stuffed Tofu.... All of these are cheap but very very delicious.
The clams with black bean sauce and the rice looked good to me.
The clam, rice and beef looked so good you didn't even have to explain them. You could taste them with your eyes.
YEAH! Totally agree :) Thanks so much!
You guys introduced Hong Kong cultural food well. I was born in Hong Kong.
Fantastic...reminds me that it's time to go for another holiday...🤗
Wonderful
Great video!
I love the cooks , they move extremely FAST, have great tecnique, and produce great food, what more can you ask for. Wish I could be their to join you. CHOW
The clams and fried rice look awesome. I like how they let you wash your own chopsticks and bowl.
Yes, this is custom in Hong Kong, especially at dim sum restaurants. Thanks so much for watching!
I love the da pai dong. Great atmosphere. I want one in my backyard. Reminds me of another show where a guy was drinking beer in a back alley of Japan, where the tables were made 0f stacked milk crates. That really down to earth, free feeling, you can't beat it. Loved everything in this episode, as good as street food gets. Last episode's food was good but I think way overpriced for what you're getting.
Yeah we completely agree with you. In the last video, we filmed in Central and Temple Street Night Market so a bit more expensive. Sham Shui Po we found was GREAT for prices and the food was delicious! Thank you so much for watching!
Please do a top 10 food poisoning video compilation you experienced
A bit of clarification...bowls, plates, glasses and utensils are indeed washed and cleaned by the staff. The table side hot water dousing by customers is a holdover from the old days when perhaps hygiene wasn't of paramount consideration. I live in HK and have eaten my fair share of dai pai dong food without the dousing (I'm a lazy S.O.B.)...never got sick and don't have hepatitis as far as I know. But good intro to our street food nonetheless. Cheers.
Hotspur62 yes I was very confused about that. Did they give them dirty dishes and chop sticks? And a bowl and hot water to rinse them off in? And you just use them after rinsing them with hot water???
@@Echo7steel You sit down at the table, they lay the "place setting" down along with a small wash basin and jug of hot water. Customers can choose to rinse the setting or not before they start serving the meal. Afterwards, the staff cart off the used settings and wash every plate, bowl and glass. Like I said, I'm lazy and if it looks clean I don't bother :-)
Hotspur62 so I guess the hot water is used to make sure they’re clean. I thought they served you dirty dishes and had you to wash them yourselves before eating
That fried rice dish looks fabulous 😍😍 I love the dishes you both tried out, everything looks delicious and your editing is awesome Luke and Sabrina. Loved the video as always
As always, thank you so much Angie!!! :) We really appreciate it.
That fried rice looks reeeaaaally good! My mouth is watering 😅 It’s not easy to get a good fried rice but this is definitely IT! 😋
I'm Irish/Chinese American and that final Hong Kong Cantonese meal reminded me of my childhood. I've never been but my great Auntie owned a Chinese buffet while I was growing up and would take trips to Hong Kong to scout chefs and food. For family get togethers she'd search out the most authentic places in the Bay Area, CA and we'd have a Cantonese feast. Those black bean clams take me back, one of my favorite dishes of all time but it's not available local anymore. Sadly all my Chinese side has pretty much died off, they never had many kids and the greater families were quite racist against race mixing and had no interest in our white side of the family, so I don't get these experiences anymore.
It's a shame that those outdoor food markets are disappearing in HK, but anyway everything looks amazing! Greetings from México.
the FUCKING Hong Kong government made it.
good job you guys really introduce the real HK style to peoples!thanks guys!
Love you channel
The food at the dai pai dong looked incredible!! Mouth watering!
It was amazing!!
I'm chinese, and I think its great that you guys went to traditional, authentic Chinese street food instead of the typical Chinese foods which western ppl normally go to.
You Start with a Beef Sandwich and finish it with that stir fry beef very interesting food 😋😋😋
Yup, quite a variety in today's video haha! Thanks for watching!
Luke Martin i like the stir fry beef and fried rice..i like beef meat hehehe
My favorite series so far, along with best foodie place in the world! I love the old building and the street markets. We hope to go back this year! Thanks for sharing!
Congrats! So close to half a million subs!
The mystery sauce is a bit of a Hong Kong thing. It is a (fermented) bean paste base but sweetened, and is unsurprisingly, called "sweet sauce". It's use is mainly in street food, especially the cheung fun but is so popular that you can get sanitized versions from big brands in supermarkets.
Thanks for letting us know!
All the food looks so goood!!!!! I am salivating....
The two cutest food reviewers... oh yea, the food looked good as well.
Every time I go to a dai Pai dong:
*SCREAMS ORDER AND THE STAFF ACCEPT IT AND JUST BEING BROS*
Very good chopsticks skill in eating the stir fried clams!
😋🤤😋 Everything looks so good! Even while I am sick in bed this looks so freakin good! Now I have my appetite back hahaha Great Video (again! haha don't mean to be repetitive but honestly I LOVE watching your videos!)😊
Thank you Jasmin I hope you feel better soon!
Perfect Food
Your style reminds me of Mark Weins with a little bit of Trevor James thrown in. Good company to be in!
Just FYI the Sun Hang Yuan place you guys went to is a new "branch" store of them and thus the renovation is new!
The old place is still there (and very close in distance)!
You''ve really made some deep researches!
I used to live in Sham Shui Po and those were my favourite restaurants!
Awesome! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks so much for watching!
The sauce is a mixture of hoisin and chili sauce so popular to accompany the taufoo. Brilliant taufoo as you can see it is very silky and firm.
Everything looks delicious! Thank you for always giving us a good content videos. Will always come back to your channel. 😁👏🏻
Thank you so much for the kind words! :)
Love to try the food and drinks at the dai pai dong but that clam with the deluxe fried rice has got to be the best.
I would prefer to bring my own chopsticks instead.
Welcome to Hong Kong. Yes, those are delicious street food in Hong Kong but we don't like to have meal in Tai Pei Dong in summer time, too hot. Hope you have a nice trip.🤗🤗
We will have to come in the winter next time! Thanks so much! :)

To anyone you want to visit the "cha chaan teng" (the egg beef sandwich), remember have a try for their wonton as well. My wife and I basically have their wonton as our dinner pretty often.
Also, they have a special style lemon tea with mango jam inside. Very very refreshing, especially in summer =). Enjoy!
Thanks for the recommendation!
Thanks !
I was at the same cheong fun store last year. It was excellent and your review was genuine. The only problem was the store was so busy and we had to eat standing on the street.
nice shots
Nice video
Amazing video, Keep up the great job. Thanks for your time.
