The pineapple bun is meant to be eaten without the butter being spread. It's supposed to be a thin slice of cold butter that contrasts the warm pineapple bun.
I can never get enough of those egg waffles myself. There's this one boba place my sister will sometimes order from, and she'll even get those waffles along side the drinks. I swear, when you bite into those things, it's like biting into air. Instead of those square indentations we're so use to seeing in typical western waffles, the egg shaped bubbles oh god. You can just easily rip off a piece and pop them in. talk about a one biter, and yes, you can taste a hint of sweetness in there. I think they do add a little vanilla to the batter if I'm not mistaken.
The food and sites look amazing. I hope to visit Hong Kong someday and get the experience myself; I've heard so much about from friends and family. My mother loved the roast goose so much that she ate it almost everyday when she visited back in 1988. Really enjoyed the video, Luke...thank you for showcasing it.
Thanks for sharing all the yummy foods! I'm a Canadian born Cantonese here and my dad was born in Hong Kong before he along with the rest of my family immigrated to Canada to run a westernized Chinese take out business. My parents and myself are planning to take a vacation to Hong Kong someday pretty soon as I haven't stepped out or neither have I travelled outside of Canada before. One of my favorite things to watch on UA-cam about Hong Kong are these BBQ roast duck, pork belly, siu yuk & char siu at these local stalls. These chefs knife cutting skills are pretty impressive!
Luke's opening was so cute, but your plan for every episode seems to be to eat eat eat, not just today's episode! Haha... Desserts attracted me in this episode, egg tarts, butter cakes, Waffles, they all look delicious! In fact, you have provided a great information. When you go to Victoria Peak, you must choose the right weather, when there are few clouds! Great job, thanks a lot for sharing!👍😄👏
I like to watch your videos Luke, because its like taking a trip to a place (like Hong Kong in this one), without having to leave home, without having to fly etc. The halal Dim Sum place looks really good. I like Hong Kong a lot, and hope to travel there again soon. But for the moment, I am content to watch your videos from there.
Luke, I noticed watching your videos that there doesn't seem to be any street food vendors. I was in Hong Kong for 9 days back in 1966. While I was there I never ate in a restaurant only the street food vendors. The food from those little food carts was outstanding. Sitting along side a dirty dusty street, flies all over the place and I never got sick.😁
That's not spam, it's sliced ham. It's the same stuff you'd use in a sandwich. Hong Kong has spam (luncheon meat) and it is shaped like American spam, using the same cans.
Hi Luke, Must say i love your food videos you do all over the world, keep them coming. But i would like to ask a request, that's when you go to these places to state the area your in and the hotel- motel or were every your staying. Why i ask is that other people might want to visit the same places you have been to see and stay. thank you Mark
Good plan. I'd add intestines near temple street market, bubble waffle in mongkok, and coconut king beverage. If I have space, I'd add tofu pudding in sham shui po.

Lord thundering jebus, your the first reviewer to let us know pineapple buns dont have pineapple! 5 years watching Chinese Food reviews and your the first one to explain it - thanks!
Another great honest & fun episode #LukeMartin #ChopstickTravel ! @1:14 Kam Wa - loved your intro going over the history of the establishment , your description on the taste and texture , the build up ! With the exception of the egg tart , I concluded the dishes tried were so-so . The place was packed so thanks for waiting in the queue ! @4:21 at the Kam Wa , the spaghetti " . . . looking like something I would cook at home . . ." ( LMAO ) @8:40 Islamic Centre Canteen - Dim Sum without pork is almost SACRILEGIOUS ! But, from your facial expression feedback , I see that you gave the place a 5 star #LukeMartin approval @15:52 Victoria Peak - making a "lemon into lemonade" @15:44 Luke asking Mink " . . . what do you think?" Mink was speechless (LOL) @17:30 at Cheung Hing Kee - Luke: " . . . you almost killed me with that . . ." Mink: ( no comment ) LOL
Cha Cang Tong is not HK Breakfast. Cha (Tea) Cang (Food) Tong (Eatery) means HK Cafes. You'll find them in California as well. It's ham, not Spam. If you bought Oscar Meyer packaged meats, then you've had that thin sliced ham, which you would find in club sandwiches from diners in the US. Waffles are called Little Chicken Eggs because of their shape.
Can someone make a list to the locations there are so many I wish to try. I am going to HK since I always wanted to see the gem of China and the marvels
The pineapple bun, you needed to ask them for a thicker slab of butter...that would of changed your mind and the thick slab way is the preferred hk way of eating it with the pineapple bun.
Have you tried the local HK Chaa Chaan Teng in among Kok where bird lovers bring their caged birds come to sit and chat about their birds while having early breakfast or light lunches ?
Those are slices of char siu(barbeque pork) in spaghetti not roast pork. Two thin slices of ham in vermicelli soup not spam. Don't see much differences for the Islamic canteen did their Halal Dim Sum compare to the locals. They don't offer worchester sauce for dipping of beef balls. If those Sheng Jin Bao were eaten in the restaurant, it would complement with red wine vinegar for dipping as well. Eggettes are the usual sweet snacks in the afternoon.
I'm a HKer myself but spent most my life in Canada.... I'm a fan of most of the comfort food in HK but just don't get the hype over some of the food items where you can easily cook better at home.... stuff like ham & macaroni or spaghetti or instant ramen.... I suppose most HKer's just don't bother cooking at all.... not sure if anyone cares but most of these cafes use mostly crappy ingredients and heavy sauce to mask any undesirable smell/taste...
those are not SPAM which is usually rectangle or round shape, thicker. You had a thin slice of cooked ham. Ting Ting. 😊 Did you learn from HKer? Interesting to have dim sum in an Islamic restaurant? I don't even kmow there is such a place.
You’re supposed to eat the pineapple bun with the butter not melted. The bun is warm and the butter is cold. That’s the special taste you’re looking for.
So really the only “British influence” on the breakfast was the tea but holy 🫣not with condensed milk and the custard pie but not for breakfast! Nothing else is really English. That was a slice of processed ham not spam.
Racism and discrimination against non Chinese is a problem in Hong Kong. You will notice racial diversity in the workplace is almost gone. The mistreatment and abuse of foreign domestic workers is out of control. Lots of food videos but you can find food in any country.
Halal just means permissible, Muslims aren’t a monolith, these are Cantonese Muslims. They’re Chinese and they’re allowed to make food the way they see fit within their dietary parameters.

Interesting halal dimsum. Would be amazing if you could do a halal food tour of Hong kong

Those Dim Sum is so FAT so they MUST come with some chinese tea, even a HKer cannot eat too much 😆

Hong Kong is pretty cleaned up these days!
Even "Dai Pai Dong" can't survive these years... only a few left
That's not spam, it's sliced ham. It's the same stuff you'd use in a sandwich. Hong Kong has spam (luncheon meat) and it is shaped like American spam, using the same cans.
Somebody said “spam” instead of sliced ham.
It's sliced heavily processed cheap "ham."
@diatom625 sorry they didn't use Parma or Virginia ham in your dish.
Its so interesting to see interpretations of western food in other places like Asia :)
I think I'd go for the soup dumplings though
Thanks Al!
I'm craving now while watching your vlogs, yummy dumplings with lots of flavours to choose from especially the waffle I love it too. 😋

Thank you for yet another great episode of HK! Super fun! Any plan of showing night markets?
I used to live in Jubilee Refugee Camp in Sham Shui Po from 1982 to 1984. I really miss HK so much.
Halal YES !!! Watching this later
for my one day in HK..... yum cha in the morning, then wonton noodles and roast goose for lunch.... then a seafood feast in the evening....
Good plan. I'd add intestines near temple street market, bubble waffle in mongkok, and coconut king beverage. If I have space, I'd add tofu pudding in sham shui po.

Great stuff, I'm visiting Hong Kong in December for Xmas, can't wait!
Will be trying these foods this friday... Cant wait!!
Hong Kong's juiciest gyoza in the world looks delicious, I want to eat it👍
Hey luke, do try a challenge ' Eating 24 hours 7 eleven food '
Thank you so much for the halal recommendation ❤❤😊
I definitely recommend you to visit Lugard road lookout, a better view of Hong Kong than the Peak. Also don’t miss Red Incense Burner Summit.

Awesome video! Hope you get to see the Vic Peak on a nice sunny day (or clear night). Bus is a cheaper alternative to tram.

⭐Eating 🏓is the unofficial sport of HK. (Chinese American living in HK Past 10 years)
Agreed!
Sweet spag for breakfast sounds so odd !! Hopefully it seems to taste better than it looks !! I laughed so hard on the foggy "view".
Do you hate seafood? HarGow would have been really fun to see here at the Dim Sum place!
Can someone make a list to the locations there are so many I wish to try.

And eat the pineapple bun with Non-melted butter, feel the butter texture!
you need to take the tableside chili paste with the breakfast noodle soup bro....missed opportunity
Is the taste of hong kong style milk tea similar to Pakistani milk tea?
Whenever im in HK islamic center canteen is a must as its hard to find halal food. I miss getting the menu thrown at me by the aunties there 😅😂😂
U probably needed a toilet after the milk tea hahahaa. I mean , many people's stomachs are not used to it.
Bro the link you put same link for both the Kam Wah restaurant and the Islamic center canteen
I like your sunglasses! Where did you get them from

fantastic video in hong kong good food I really liked luke congratulations thank you hug your fan 🇵🇹🇪🇺🌶🌶😊 22:53
I hope someone doesnt slip from that dumpling juice that popped out all over the floor @19:46 🤣🤣

Order satay beef noodles next time with hk style lced milk tea or lemon tea! U know the deal Luke! Cheung hing kee is so good 👍👍
This is the first time to learn about the halal food center
It's Malay cake. In Cantonese, it's pronounced "Ma Lai Go."
Cool jollibee spaghetti

Yummy
16:05 that used to be training table. Jean-Claude Van Damme.
my HK friend advices to take a taxi/uber up the peak... then take the cable car down... no need to queue up
Bus or minibus is an option for the price conscious.
I go for the halal dim sum once a month 😂❤

Odd chicken siu mai is actually a thing… not just coz of halal
