Face of greed. @6:30 Council made a mistake , but he still took advantage of them to build the extra flat. @17:17 he said he does not listen to Nigerian Structural engineers because they have just book knowledge and no practical knowledge. No wonder the Structural Engineering team quit. In saner society the governor would have resigned , because its his job to make sure things like this don't happen. . Mentions "god" so many times. which is the problem in Nigeria. So many "religious" people without ethics
another thing he said that seems a red flag was when he said he was advice to a generator of 1500 kv something and he got 800 instead and the building is using 500... that tells me compromise... and that could only happen in nigeria.
I wouldn't consider the generator issue as him wanting to cut corners. For all intents and purposes, if the facility needed the 1500kVA, he'd eventually buy it. But he realised they didn't even need up half of that for the work. It's about being prudent here

You can't be far from the truth. His structural engineers pulled out last year February and confirmed the integrity of the other two buildings and the first 3 floors of the 21 storey building. He was a man used to not following rules and paying bribes to boycott due process and hide behind Christianity for facade. The governors office is to be blamed because they reopened his site but he paid the price for his actions.
@@sop606 it's all strange. It doesn't make sense but it all points to something going wrong with the structural integrity of the building. I heard on a different video that the permission granted for the building was for only 15 floors, so how come the building went up to 21 floors?

He confessed refusing advice from the professionals at 17:15 . He is not even a professional in anything that relates to building and yet hated to be told to do things professionally.
This is Nigeria for you. Anybody can call themselves any professional name. A dental assistant in London can come to Nigeria and call themselves dentist without the authority checking any certificate and even having the audacity to operate as a dentist. Let's blame the authority for not doing their job, and allowing any quack person operate professionally when they are not trained for it
@Tunde Aladi. It's quite a pity and most people defending him here are like that too. Most Nigerians don't respect professionals when it comes to building. They either employ quacks who will charge them less or do the plans themselves, buy the materials themselves and supervise the construction themselves. This is a lesson for all who want to go into real estate, that is if they will learn
Though an inspiring man but not in some ways and the way he flout rules even if it's the council or the regulatory body that erred in giving out what is ideal, he should not have been heading to build on the wrong approvals. Ahswear u jus spoke ma mind, with the story he told here u can see that he has been doing substandard buildings by editing their original plan and that’s wrong.
One mistake people make is believing that project development experience in developed countries can be replicated in Nigeria. The soil and construction standard of Nigeria is not the same as the of developed countries. Was the soil okay for 15 or 21 floors? The enabling building code and thorough project certification free of corruption are missing in Nigeria. Before a building could collapse means that there is a structural problem resulting from cutting corners and corrupt practices. You are building such high-rise apartments and there is no organization certifying each stage of the work as it is done abroad? I will never make the mistake of trusting the Nigerian business environment. Corruption smells from every angle. I am sorry for this guy and those who died in the collapsed building. May their souls rest in peace.
There’s soil testing in Nigeria. There are also building codes and certification in Nigeria. These are the purview of the Lagos State Building Control Agency. The problem is not an absence of codes or expertise, but rather the ANYHOWNESS (impunity aided by corruption) that pervades throughout Nigeria and among most Nigerian citizens - from top to bottom. Nigerians love to blame their so-called ‘leaders’ (as if they’re from Mars), but ultimately Nigeria’s condition is a culmination of the varying actions of ALL Nigerians (by commission or omission).
Everything you’ve said here is wrong. There are many 21 story buildings in Ikoyi where this man was building. All of them were certified and build to code. None of them have collapsed. Or do you want to say Julius Berger and Cappa D’Alberto don’t know what they’re doing??? This was an isolated incident, and not the norm. Accidents happen all the time. In Australia there’s a newly built over 21 story apartment building that’s cracked and is now bending sideways. All the tenants had to evacuate.
@@bessel260, if we all agree that everything that I said is wrong, please tell us exactly why this collapse occurred. Your argument seems to be one-sided. I don't like the idea of people justifying this terrible error that is not natural by referencing similar collapsed buildings elsewhere. One thing that can't be argued against is that this building collapsed due to structural problems resulting from terrible acts of negligence. We must try to avoid such acts. Everyone inside the building deserved not to die. I am indeed pained and saddened by this terrible waste of human lives in this tragedy. The other buildings built by this man on the same premises need to be properly checked to avert similar tragedy.

Half of the people are saying don't judge the man, when there is a letter from the consultant telling him that the building construction is substandard and he is going in the wrong direction. Nigerians do not care about right or wrong, as long as somebody uses the name of God and is a big man. People in Nigeria are more impressed by rich and corrupt people than they are by poor and honest people. That is why the country is poor and backwards. Nigerians support corruption and then pretend that they don't. In reality the people are mesmerized by wealth, no matter the source.
@TopeA8. No it's because he died that is why people are saying don't judge him. It's a very stupid mentality that people display that pisses me off. When you're pointing out wrongs that someone did, they call it judging. They are all hypocrites. If you search their hearts, they are truly happy that he died in the building as well, otherwise the same people who are saying don't judge will be calling for his head.
Firstly let’s just acknowledge black excellence. So often time we’re quick to be critical yet have not achieved half of what this man has done. This man was a risk taker and that’s proof to what lead him to his success. Africa on the other hand is lead through corruption, from top to bottom corruption happens every day. This may be a lesson that integrity will bring you peace. Proud of this African brother for having a vision and following through definitely sad that safety was not considered in his operations and hence lost his own life as well as other innocent beings.
Where is the excellence here? Or does excellence have a separate meaning? You have no idea what this collapse has done to Nigeria. Withdrawal of investments, lack of access to facilities, distrust of our professionals e.t.c
I understand the consequences that will come with this collapse. Though can you honestly say you didn’t see that coming? Collapse Aside!! The way things have been going on in Nigeria, the soldiers, trafficking, scamming not too mention the multiple churches scheming innocents civilians. I admire Nigerians for the can do attitude and brilliant minds however the few bad apples spoil it for the rest of Nigeria and the rest of African to shine.
Really, authorities made mistake and wrote 3 stories instead of 2, and he won the case in England; so you got greedy in Nigeria to alter 15 stories to 21!!!!
It was supposed to be 4 even. Just 4 stories. The white people withdrew their workers because they couldn't attest or approve of the building after the 4th floor. And they told him, and he paid deaf ears. Its so tragic
@@msjoy431 You must be his relative or friend to be advocating for him like this. Nobody hates him, we are just pointing out his errors so that others will learn and so we don't get a repeat of what happened. How would you feel if your relative died in that tragedy?
Absolutely BS. The council did not make any mistake. The property in Hackney (Albion Drive) is a 4 storey building not a 7 storey. He is telling little lies here & there. God rest his soul.
I can tell that lots of what he was saying are made up stories and lies. He can't repeat everything he said in that interview. May his soul and the souls of all the people he ignorantly killed rest in peace.
@@princeayo2002 We as Nigerians will believe any crap. As a UK resident, I can tell you its impossible for the planning department of any council to make an error. He was permitted to build a 4 storey building because he met all the building regulations. All I did was google the address which led me to more info about the building.
@@independentwoman5516 I understand. In fact, the building and housing department will visit the site several times without announcing at every stages of the developments and must be approved. U can get your approval in Nigeria without stepping out of your home or office. Imagine how many people that would have died if it was completed.
Waow!! This country is so flawed. His mistake started when he was asked to buy a 1000kva generator which 500kva generator could relatively handle. He thus, lost his trust in the so called professionals. The gap is just too much. Secondly, it is a risk doing critical projects in Nigeria depending on the Nigeria market.. There are a lot of fake, inferior products in the nigerian market.

He is his master behind the Ikoyi incidence, he should not have pass 15 floors. Authorities should have stop the construction on the first day he set pillars for the sixteenth floor, authorities needs to do more in supervision on anything.
The council made a mistake then the told him not to build the three story but he went ahead to do it and he think he was smart doing that .he must have done the same thing with the collapsed building that has also taken his life.the Authorities did not stop him because he bribe them and they all will deny it because the man is no more.Look at him saying God spoke to him after stating he returned to Nigeria to enjoy his money,Nigerians and religion are like police and 50 naira on the high way..

Why has there always been a mistake in writing the number of floors? I listened carefully to this video…. I smelt greed … it’s a pity… he gets approval to build certain number of floors, he ends up doing more and claiming there was an error in writing….I feel terrible for the innocent souls lost
It doesn't make sense. A "mistake" in real estate put people's lives at risk. His other two high rise buildings should be checked out too to make sure there are no "mistakes" too regarding the number of floors. Planning permission in construction is for a reason so over ruling planning regulations (number of floors etc) can have deadly consequences
He succeeded outside Nigeria because he could not cut corners outside Nigeria. Cutting corners in Nigeria is a way of life made possible because of our love for influence peddling. In Nigeria, anything goes!!! Our system is designed for influence peddling
All he did in Western world are solid and still standing till date all because legal policies must be adhered to but in 9ija anything goes.....

This story is so weird. I didn't know he was the owner of the collapsed building in Ikoyi, until one of the commentators stated, "so God guided him to return to Nigeria, then he later died in his collapsed building" ......just a paraphrase there. Very sad what corruption had caused for Nigeria.

Your so called mentor did not OBEY THE LAWS OF PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING!. If you want to build a 21-storey building, you make sure you STRICTLY ADHERE to Health and Safety Laws. You build a 7 to 8 storey foundation as base before building up!. You ask yourself, why did he not ignore the laws of health and safety in the UK or maybe South Africa? Because he KNOWS he will be summarily arrested. Also remember the lives of those that died were due to "oju is kokoro" greediness and avarice

You renovated 2-storey building and extended it to 3-story back in London many years ago, they approved 15 storey building for you in Lago but you went ahead to build 21 storey. Sorry to say You never respect Engineer's advice hence the reason for the collapse in Lagos.
You really need to listen again, because he didn't renovate a building, he built a property. They documents stated 3 floors if not the property would have been confisticated.
So he had a history of developing more floors than approved. They keep making mistakes for him.
One that can't be trusted with little can't be trusted with much. Started by cheating with one floor ended by cheating with 7 floors.
It's not a question of answering a Landlord, or the owner of a skyscraper. The mention of Sanwo-Olu 20:00 - 20:45( and his stuttering) He has indicted Sanwoolu.

He might have made mistakes, he might have taken a wrong advise, he might have compromised on something, it might not have anything to do with him but his attitude is good and a lot can be learned from him.
From this conversation he was a risk taker but he was not genuine. The kind of risk you take with cars cannot be taken with airplanes.
When building a bungalow, you might cut corners but you are supposed to go far and above when it comes to storey buildings. They are supposed to double the strength of the pillars and test every step of the way.

Great Lesson from this interview,
Though u may be wealthy respect the Professional Advice.
Never forget that God has reason for putting those professionals there.
Throughout the comments you can understand why Nigeria is a poor country.
He sounds as if he is making up half of this story
ofcouse he was making up all of it. there is no way on earth this guy obeyed building protocols
Exactly.
