It’s exactly what I thought as a lot come to Nigeria from past crime.
One such was a missionary from USA who went to Kenya with his wife but married a 2nd wife unknown to his wife.
He almost got away with her murder but GOD brought her to life and told her story.
I pray he is genuine not a criminal but check him due to children too. 😢

I heard the Nigerian 🇳🇬government deems MAKOKO an ILLEGAL Community and they have warned them to leave for the past one year. Anyway same source says the community will be removed forcefully or otherwise before April 2024 as part of the land they are reclaiming from the sea. My own issue is I hope the government has plans, to relocate them somewhere better and not just drive them away like that.

Regardless of what you think about this man's intentions and as an African, a Nigerian who lived, went to school and worked for many years not far from this area, One thing i know for sure is that as a culture, empathy is something our people need to work on. To the indigenous culture it really is a strange concept. The fact that Lagos state govt has not done anything meaningful for these people over the years is just sad. Hopefully this community will turn aound soon and will no longer be a charity case for the rest of the world to show up and try to help us fix.

Empathy is not lacking in our indigenous culture(s). Africans are historically and traditionally, warm hospitable and caring because we live Ubuntu: I am because We are. Our hospitable nature was abused by the different colonizets
The selfish culture in Lagos/Nigeria is a result of our (unfortunate) interaction with the Western way of living ( exploitation, consumerism and materialism-words that don't exist in African languages), the divide and rule policy of religion and colonization. The current crop of people living in Africa are hardly African in the true sense because the values they have imbibed are alien to the those of the ancestors they descended from.

    Questions arise in my mind:
    1) Why aren't the NYSC deployed to help with a project such as this?
    2) Lagos state has a multi-billion dollar economy, why can't they dedicate a fraction of this towards communities that lack clean drinking water?
People are quick to BOAST of a population of 200+ million, but it takes a foreigner with a "pricked conscience" (from childhood) to come and do something like this. It's kind of sad how as a society we have become blind to people's obvious needs. Despite all the talk of being the "giant of Africa" - the poor in Nigeria are no better off than the poor in "poorer" African countries, they could even be worse because there are more people to fight to get what you want.

The problem with Nigerian policy makers and public officials is their priorities. They are willing to borrow a billion dollars and more to build a fourth mainland bridge while they will ignore a humanitarian tragedy like Makoko. Think of what an investment of 100 million dollars would do for so many people. They can develop a waste management system for them, potable water, and improved housing and transportation. This would alleviate poverty to the extent people would begin to relocate. A person living in penury is not in a position to move. The government simply wants to remove them without providing an alternate means of livelihood. They survive on fishing. The solution is excellent education and skills acquisition for the children and youth such that they will be able to move out to start families elsewhere.
