- A few weeks ago I turned a sequoia (redwood) bowl, cut from a large log. A lot of you requested I do it again but this time turned the other way up so it had a natural edge. How did I get on? Well you had better watch and find out. Will it be an Unbelievable Redwood Transformation?

The wood whisperer strikes again. Amazing work.
Haha thanks Bruce 🤣
Isn’t nature wonderful, your vision and talent make for another gorgeous piece. 😊
Thank you very much Bev and you are so right, I consider myself very lucky to be able to work with pieces like this 😀
These two bowls are fantastic. You really brought out nature's beauty in them. As far as that log cabin goes - they'd both go great in the living room, with either of them being used as a fruit bowl.
Haha thanks my friend 😀
Definitely a unique piece! Beautiful!!!😎👍👍👍
Thank you kindly, the grain in this is just beautiful 😀
It's really beautiful. The grain, the colours, wow!!!
Thanks Paul, come for a closer look, ther grain is just amazing! 😍
Being from California this sequoia turning is amazing
Thanks, I do love this wood 😀
Another beautiful bowl from that log. That reactionary wood is great.
Thank you very much Doug, the grain is just mind-blowing!
The General Sherman Sequoia in California, at 2200 years old, has the most wood (by column) of any tree on Earth- this piece is a regal representation of the beauty of these trees beautiful work Mike😊
Thanks so much Judy, they are the most beautiful and amazing trees 😀
Now that is a lovely bowl 🤩
Thanks Michael 😊
Absolutely beautiful wood. I always love uncovering what’s hidden inside. Very nice job.
You and me both! Best part of the job and it never gets old 😂
Gorgeous piece, amazing, beautiful work thank you 😊
Thank you very much! 😊
Very nice looking
Thanks 😀
Absolutely stunning!
Thanks Rosanna 😀
❤ love the natural edge finish, nice to see something clever done with the knot as well. Out of the two bowls this one is definitely my favourite. Thanks for sharing again Mike.
You aer welcome Colin, I do love this one, the knot made life a bit harder but definitely worth the effort 😊
Beautiful! The live edge really sets this piece off.
Thank you very much Dana, must admit I love this one as well 🤭
Absolutely stunning! Your videos never disappoint!
Thank you so much Jeff I try my best 😀
Love it. The branch protrusion makes it absolutely unique . Shame it is not the 20K give away, but who would not want to keep such a beautiful piece.
Haha I'm on making the 20k bowl now and if it does not go well it still might be 😂
I love Sequoia and I think these were wonderful choices for these projects.
Thanks! I still have 2 more ends to do something with 😀
I await them with what is probably way too much enthusiasm!@@MikeHolton
Beautiful work and wood
Thank you very much Sandy 🤭
What a beauty! Thanks for sharing your talent and expertise!
My pleasure! thanks so much for taking the time to watch 😀
Wow! I love the live edge with the branch.
Me too, it's just a bit different and I'm so glad I left it.
Stunning work Mike.
Thanks so much 😄
I do love the live edge bowls.
Me too Marvin 😀
Excellent work! Well Done, again, Mike.
Thank you! Cheers David, I think I'm in love with redwood!
@@MikeHolton Quite understandably so, when you can do what you with it!
That is beautiful lovely work mike
Thank you so much Ashley 😀
Amazing skill and an amazing eye, a joy to watch.
Thanks so much Simon 😊
Fantastic 👍
Thank you Jim 🙂
This is stunning. I thought you were going to use the branch as the base of the bowl but using it as the top of the bowl is inspired.
Thanks Nikkie 😀
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you so much for listening and turning a natural edge. It turned out ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! Just look at all that beautiful natural beauty created by nature ❤
Thanks Mary, I'm glad I did what I was told as well 😂 I do love this piece, there are a few more pictures on my Instagram and Facebook pages 😀
@@MikeHolton I don’t do Facebook or Instagram. I’m sure they are amazing pictures
@@marybethhuson295 that's ok, you can see them here, no need to sign up ko-fi.com/mikeholton
Yes, you now have 20,000 subscribers, and congratulations. As always, Mike, you have produced a lovely piece. I do like to see the first coat of finish bringing out the beauty of the wood. 🌞
Many thanks Ray, that first coat nearly took my breath away!
@@MikeHolton I’d noticed 🌞
🤣@@raydriver7300
I like both bowls about the same!
Thanks Jason 😀
The grain is amazing! I couldn’t see why you chose to position the bowl the way you did, but that’s just my inexperience showing. Great choice! I also really like the live edge on this particular bowl.
Thanks Susannah, this is one of my recent favourites 😃
Very nice bowl!! I would like to find some of that wood and turn one myself!!
It's pretty amazing, I would like some more 😊
That bowl has it all. Awesome figure, live edge, beautiful grain, lovely colour and bags of character. Really well done my friend. 👏
Thank you kindly 😁
this piece is just stunning! i thought the last one was lovely, but this is just gorgeous :) thanks for the great content and big CONGRATS for the 20k subs!!!! can't wait to see the bowl
Thanks so much Dee, the grain in this one is just amazing, I think I'm in lone with it lol
Mike - I think the word you were looking for is "perpendicular".
And that bowl is spectacular!
Such a contrast to the original bowl, and beautiful in its own right.
Please, never stop creating such wonderful designs.
Haha yes it was, perpendicular lol, I'm dyslexic and can struggle sometimes to get the right word, it can make my daytime job as a lecturer interesting at times 🤭
Mike that's another beauty well done mate and congrats on reaching 20k subs .👍
Thank you so much William 😄
I have a piece of California red wood of similar colour I just hope I can do as nice a job with it. You set the bar high I'll be very patient with it.
You will be fine John, just take a good look at the grain and you will figure out the best way to turn it. All the best, Mike
I love how the live edge turned out. Stunning, great job.
Thanks so much Kevin 😁
Like this one better!
Me too 😁
Love it! Have you seen the sequoia forest? It’s amazing !
Not first hand but I would love to one day, all the best, Mike 😀
Where did the Sequoia come from? It’s native to us here in our national parks in the Central Valley of California. Beautiful work!
Hi Dave, we have them un the UK, they were introduced in 1853 by a guy called William Lobb. There are thought to be about 1/2 million here now, most of them in Scotland.
Very nice work, Mike. I turn mostly live/natural edges. Always love the challenge each piece gives me. I recently turned a Redwood end grain cookie someone gave me. It exploded twice. After a bottle of ca glue and tons of sanding, they did end up with a decent fruit bowl. Have to admit I'm not a huge fan of turning softwoods.
I know what you mean Loran and normally I wouldn't but this sequoia is just so beautiful I wish I had loads more 😀
Mike really glad you turned it this way, I agree with you this is my favourite. Leaving part of the branch was a great idea.
Glad you enjoyed it Paul, the branch made it quite a bit harder than the first one but so worth the effort. 😀
That is beautiful, the fact that you saved the branch jutting out gives it so much more personality.
Thanks Tessa, it would have been a lot easier to loose it but where is the fun in that 😀, all the best, Mike
These two bowls are a fascinating pair! I like both of them, but the live edge is so gorgeous, I love it. For me, the fact that you left the branch in which "explains" to the viewer why the colors are the way they are is a big reason the live edge is my favorite of these two.
Congrats on the 20k+ subscribers level!
Thanks so much Susan and thanks again for your endless support 😀
I really enjoy watching you work. My dad loved being in his shop, making things for friends and family. Watching you brings back so many happy memories for my husband and I.
Thanks so much for letting me know how watching my work makes you feel, it gives me great joy to know I help evoke memories of loved ones. I would have loved my father to have seen what I make but I'm afraid we lost him before I started my turning. All the best, Mike
Hello Mike. When you turned the first bowl I was stunned by how beautifully it turned out. And I am really pleased you have done the second quite quickly, so those who watched the first are still able to make a sound decision as to which they prefer. To me, this one certainly takes this piece of wood to another level. It is fabulous and you should be rightly proud of it. Well done!
Now …. The next question …. What are you going to delight us with when you turn the cut off ends from both pieces? 🤔
Thanks so much Angela and that is a very good question. The end pieces are not as interesting (although my prove to be) so not sure, I guess the obvious thing to do would be to do the same, turn on standard and one natural edge. But I will give it some thought to see if I can think of something more interesting 😀
Do we have to prefer one? 😅
@@lornacy not at all 🤣
P.s more chainsaw footage 😊. Your loyal students demand it. Lol.
Haha, it's messy and I'm not very good at it but I will see what I can do lol
Another beautiful piece Mike.
Love watching your productions.
Many thanks Bill, I really appreciate your support 😀
Beautiful work, Mike ! Just beautiful ! I hope I win SOMETHING of yours ! 😂 Congrats on 20,000 subscribers !!
Thanks Bill, you have a good a chance as anybody else 😀 good luck
Beautiful bowl, Mike. Congratulations reaching 20k!!
Thank you so much Tracy 😀
That came out amazing! The colors and grain are gorgeous, and the natural edge was perfect. Leaving the end of the branch on the edge really adds the perfect flair! I appreciate how you described your approach to keep the branch edge without damaging it. When you added the shellac, I think all your viewers felt as you did: wow, that looks beautiful. This is one of my favorite pieces you have created!
Me too my friend, this will be a hard one to let go but I have had interest already!
You do excellent worked you are my 'go-to' for learning advanced turning. I really like how you take time to determine the best way to expose grains. I live in the PNW and have 12 acres of mixed woods mostly Alder and Big Leaf Maple and am anxious to use in projects. Thank you for your in depth videos! BTW ... Rewood and Sequoia are different species.
Thank you very much Jim, alder and maple are beautiful woods to turn, all the best, Mike
Those ripples interrupt my thoughts too. Beautiful work, as always. And congratulations on reaching 20k!
Thanks Ronnie, I'm very easily distracted as well when it comes to wood like this!
I love the comparison. I learned a lot from this video. The wood is incredible. Lovely bowl.
Thank you very much! 😊
Amazing piece of work. The wood grain is beautiful. I've learned so much watching your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much and that is so good to hear, all the best and thanks for your support, Mike
A beautiful work of art, stunning. Love the wood grain and color. Thanks for sharing all your hard work, on both sides of the camera.🌿 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you so much 😀
Woohoo! 20k! Nice work. Beware the invisible spinning knot. From now on, I'll tell my people I'm putting blue tape on my tool rest, meaning "go no further, buddy". Lol
Haha, it works I promise lol. Honestly I just could not see where it was and the last thing I wanted was a rap across my fingers from it 😂
Very awesome, Mike. Your channel is one of my favorites. Always inspirational.
Thanks so much Archie, that means a lot to me, thanks so much for your support, all the best, Mike
It's beautiful!
I am curious why wood turners don't use the "Bowl saver" tool more often? Especially with such beautiful wood...
You could get 2 bowls instead of just one. I'm wondering if you could even get more than 2....
I and saving to get one, they are expensive to buy and not worth it unless you sell a lot of bowls. All the best, Mike
So beautiful Mike! I've never had the honour of turning sequoia, but we do have eastern red cedar that looks very similar to this up here in Canada, that I have turned small ornaments out of. It is a very beautiful wood!
Congratulations on 20 000!!
Heather
Thanks so much Heather 😊
Incorporating the branch area was genius! This beautiful bowl looks alive.
Thank you very much! 😀
A couple of beautiful pieces. I turned a bowl once for my woodwork CSE back in the 1980’s. My woodwork teacher actually did most of it. That’s probably why I got a half decent grade 😂. I’d love to have another go one day. Keep up the great work. 😃
Hi George, you sound similar to me, I did a chess set for mine (1985) and then only took it up again when my wife bought me a lathe for our wedding anniversary nearly three years ago. It's never too late my friend
Again Mike just a amazing piece.. the coloring and pattern of the wood are so special, I understand why you were kinda distracted by its beauty 😅😊. Your channel is now growing by the day.. Keep it up, and I love your work.
Thanks so much Wendy, I'm enjoying the ride but still find it really hard to believe it's all happening 😄
I love Sequoia wood when turned with skill. You have shown your skill Mike with this half of the the same crotch as the 'sister' bowl. Leaving the knot was a touch of genius I think & as I said in my opening, you have handled & preserved it with great skill & sensitivity. The ripples from the crotch look amazing too & add a touch of class to the already beautiful grain. An amazing piece & I think with the knot & the natural edge put this just ahead of its 'sister' bowl which is also so beautiful. Well done my friend, Don from South Australia.
Thanks so much Don, I really try to work with the wood to keep as just of it's character as possible. I can force it into any shape I like but it would never be as good. All the best, Mike
It fascinates me how you manage to extract such amazing pieces of usable Art from pieces of wood. Watching you produce this bowl was like completing a puzzle which you never had done before. It is an amazing species of wood (Sequoia) which you turned. How much would that Bowl cost me if I wanted to purchase it. Great work. Cheers
Hi Peter, given the cost of materials etc I would imagine it being around £45 plus postage. If you're interested please email me mike@mikeholton.net
All the best
Mike
wow beautiful love the branch standing slightly proud of the edge
Thanks! It made the turning a lot harder but really worth the effort, all the best, Mike
It is amazing the grain beauty that nature creates and challenges wood workers to reveal.
Thanks Jason 😀
That wood is amazing, love the colours and grain pattern and the shape of the bowl is very unique
Thank you very much Donna 😊
Very lovely piece of artwork! I love your videos and mellow sense in talking with us! Thanks from Kentucky.
Thank you so much Larry, I do try to create a friendly atmosphere, all the best, Mike
I wish I had a wood turning lathe. I do have a Swiss made Star watchmaker's lathe though. Made in the early 1960s. In very crisp condition. Zero missing pieces and still has the original mounting screws. I can turn little things :)
Haha that sounds really cool!
Yup, my favourite thus far. Just shows that bowls do not have to be symmetrical, but can flow with nature beautifully. Exceptional vision made real - well done sir.
Thank you very much Neil, I love turning pieces like this and when the grain is this good it's the icing on the cake 😊
Such beautiful work. I love getting inspiration from your videos. I’m newish to wood working and have only been turning for 2 years and your videos help me understand the process.
Hi Ladonna, so glad my videos are helpful. If you ever have a question or problem let me know and I'll do my best to answer. All the best, Mike
20,000 subscribers! Congratulations!!
Thank you!! 😀
Beautiful as always Mike! ❤ it!
Congrats again on your continuing success !!
👍😁🎉🍾🥂
Thanks so much Terrie 😀
Was really concerned about you coming into contact with the high edge of the bowl. Turned out beautifully. Love the grain.
Thanks Stephen, I'm pretty used to turning these not so know the importance of knowing where my fingers are at all times 😀
I'm pretty sick right now but still watching you make beautiful art.
Sorry to hear that Nana, I really hope you get better soon, all the best, Mike
😍 stunning Mike, and definitely the second bowl edges out the first 😉 but both amazing in their own right.
I loved that someone called it a lava bowl as it does look like lava running down.
Another masterpiece Mike, thank you 🤗
Thanks so much Fiona and this is certainly my favourite of the two although the grain on both is just amazing. I think I'm going to refer to it as the lava bowl from now on, that was such a great idea. Talk soon, Mike
Mike!..... that bowl is just superb! beautiful work!
Thanks so much Steve 😀
Great inversion comparison piece Mike. Now, I am going to target some branch ladened, crotch pieces myself.
I will send pics if they come out decent. If you don't receive pictures from me, then you'll know I have been fragged, by my poor choice in a piece.
Haha thanks Frank, good luck and I'll look forward to seeing your pics 🤭
That piece is amazing Mike, now that is what we turn wood for!!!!!
You are so right Steve, I kept on getting distracted by the grain, it really is that nice!!
Another two beautiful bowls Mike, the rippling really makes the bowls pop,the way it goes through deeply into the heart wood is brilliant.
You are right about that, I could not believe how deep they went and I'm so glad they did, all the best, Mike
Very nice Mike! Can you tell me where your custom emblems are made? Thanks.
Thanks, the stickers I use are from www.stickersinternational.co.uk/ 😀
Both bowls were beautiful, the one with the live edge is my favourite too. Congrats on reaching 20K.
Thanks so much Cara 😊
😂gorgeous again. Mike you are so talented. The way you turn a lump of wood into a fine art piece is amazing. Congratulations on the 20k subs you will be at 200k subs before long. ❤
Thank you so much Shelley 😀, that make take a little while but you never know!
Hi Mike. I love the Redwood and how you left some of the knot. The way the crotch splits off into three is very interesting also. A great piece. Cheers, Bill Riley.
Thanks Bill, this is why I love turning crotches, the grain inside does some amazing things 😀
It looks like the Heartwood is pouring into the Bowl! Isn't wood amazing! 👍
It does! One person called it the lave bowl 😀
What a stunning pair Mike. Beautiful wood, it’s amazing what nature hides away. What scraper did you use on the inside?
Thanks Mike, it's a Record power 1 1/2 scraper, I got it second hand on Facebook Marketplace 😊
That sequoia was a great investment. Both pieces are absolutely beautiful. I love the live edge you left on this one though. Great job as always!!!
Thanks William, I still have two more pieces from this to turn 😉
It is really cool seeing similar blanks turned 2 different ways. I can see why folks tend to go to live-edge for crotch pieces, and why woodturners like them so much. Also, my wife thinks that it is hilarious that woodturners fight over "crotch" pieces.
Haha thanks Jerimiah, just wondering if I would fight for a nice crotch, probably lol 😂
I like the natural bowls. I also love the two tone of the wood. Wow wood turners have to have so much patience. I enjoyed watching you today for me it was very educational and fascinating.😊❤
Glad you enjoyed it Deborah 😀
Wow, that really is beautiful and so unusual with the way the branch goes up the side. I also love the way it’s finished and it looks as smooth as silk
Thank you so much 😀
Simply lovely. I thought the first bowl was wonderful, but the asymetry of this one adds so much more interest.
Thank you very much Victoria, this one was a lot harder than the first but so worth the effort 😀
This piece is spectacular!! The branch really tells the story that this was part of a tree. I really enjoy the sanding montages. It does give the impression that it’s a lot of work, but in a quick, entertaining way.
Thank you very much Ted, I was wondering when someone would mention the change in sanding video. Thanks for the feedback lol
Wow Mike another stunning piece. While both bowls from that log are amazing, I agree that the live edge and keeping the branch edge really makes this bowl stand out.
Thanks Dan, I do love the way this one came out 😀
Beautiful bowl. That is an impressive scraper!
Haha thanks, I picked it up off Facebook Marketing, it's a monster 😂
Evening Mike what compound do you use on your buffing wheel.? Nice turn by the way
Thanks John, I just use whatever wax I'm using on the bowl 😀
