Thanks again for the kind words Hyce! -36:15-- The fire temp went down because you put more coal in the firebox: In Derail Valley, adding coal makes the fire temporarily cool down, then heat back up once the coal starts burning. The effect is more pronounced if you add more coal at once.- Never mind, this is completely wrong: I must have misread the fire temp gauge. Adding coal does not negatively affect the fire temp. BTW the S282's superheat simulation means that the temperature of the steam in the cylinders is the same as the temperature of the firebox. So a hotter fire equals a more efficient engine, and the degree of superheat can be read with the fire temp gauge. (hmm, maybe I should make the rear cylinders of the duplex use cooler steam...) 41:26 it's Franklin type B2 valve gear. There are minor differences between Caprotti, Lentz, and Franklin, but they're pretty similar; the main difference is that Caprotti is Italian, Lentz is Austrian, and Franklin is American lol. So if you see an American engine with rotary valve gear, it's probably Franklin; if you see a British or European locomotive with rotary valve gear, it's probably Caprotti or Lentz.
Cool to see they actual sim that. The steam temp matching fire temp.... well, that's a little silly but it gets the idea close to right. :D And thank you for clarifying the valve gear! :D
you should only consider haveing the rear cylinders use cooler steam if the duplex is compounding rather then being simple (ie, is the steam going from one set to the other? or are both drawing steam from the steam chest? if the former then maybe do it, if the latter then defiantly don't do it)
@@themanformerlyknownascomme777 the duplex is simple, but the steam has to go significantly further for the rear cylinders and might cool down a bit on the way.
Note that the steam goes to the rear cylinders by pipes that run outside the boiler, so on the duplex you can't rely on the boiler keeping all that steam super hot. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'll simulate it; seems like all it would do is make the rear engine use a little more steam for the same power, and the duplex already uses plenty of steam
Pro tip: with the duplex, you often don’t need the bar wide open to get moving, since as long as the engines aren’t synced up, there’ll usually be at least one cylinder getting steam at any given time. It’s also why it does fairly well on hills as long as it doesn’t break traction.

The duplexes are great. I pulled 2.5k tons of scrap steel out of the harbor to the steel mill. Had to hit the hill at 50 and take the shallower left hand track at the junction after the initial climb out and was on the sand the whole time. Went down to like 4 kmh for a bit, but it made it.

A day late, but: Regarding the sleep in the beginning, as long as you have the job cards in hand, they don't (shouldn't) despawn. You could travel the entire map doing jobs from other locations, but the job cards in hand should be persistent. In a similar vein, pretty sure cars from abandoned jobs (wrecked or just abandoned) are persistent once taken unless you actually throw the job book in the trash can. Throwing on the ground just returns to lost and found, but trash can will actually clear them. (Not entirely sure about wrecked cars, but I think they clear when the job is trashed.) If you really want to reroll the jobs given at a location, trashing every job on the table before leaving is a good way to make sure everything gets refreshed. (Note: DO NOT do this IRL.)
That coupling vid though...omg. Video idea:: Steam boi in the front>heavy consist, multi job, one location>DE6/slug>another heavy consist, multi job, different location. Hot drop and shunt one while the other rolls on, try and catch the roller after finishing first yobs. Camptown Races: 'Camptown ladies sing this song, doo da doo da | Camptown racetrack five miles long, oh the doo da dey. | Gonna run all night | Gonna run all day. | Bet my money on the bobtail nag | Somebody bet on the bay.' The actual song is full feature length, but this is what we all know as kids. This snippet also ignores two whole verses before the run all night bit. And here I thought we got through all the chaos and were going to escape without Kenosha..... I should know better. This is Hyce. #kenoshaforever PS. and my lantern is gold!!!!! :)
26:16 - Well the little one is among others used to shove ICE 1s with (in their original setup) close to 800 tons of mass in the shop. So yes it does pack a punch ☺️ Should you be interested, I can translate the description of the notches from German Wikipedia (I'm not trained on the class, so I don't professionally know the details). It's an interesting nine notch setup with only 3, 6 and 9 suitable for constant use and they work by having different setups of parallel or serial motors **and** battery cells. Clever simple layout. 30:07 - Not that a whole lot of shunters would care, but in recent years it has been banned to wait between the buffers. Now you have to wait outside till contact is made and then climb in-between (and there you have the reason why so many don't care, obviously 😂) 33:40 - "Bad practice" as in "ripping the wheelset out its bearing bad practice", yes 😝 Though you can get away with it in modern electric traction since asynchronous three phase engines don't get stupid fast when spinning. 36:50 - So in short; you have to use pressure to get pressure 😄 Sounds counterintuitive at first glance, but obviously it makes sense with the draft. 43:50 - Oh I hate killer switches … there's one junction where you are allowed to run at 130 km/h through the switches in the diverging section. You can, too, it is safe - but after that I wouldn't recommend ordering a coffee from the restaurant coach as the train driver, you can assume both the gastro personnel and the conductor/guard bringing it to the loco will spit in it =P You really don't want to take it at more than 115 km/h unless you're empty stock. 1:02:00 - With all that slippery when wet business and sand and such; is my reasoning correct that under slippery conditions you might be better off with a high cutoff and low throttle, resulting in a lower peak force and thus lower chance of breaking loose from the static friction? Or is the whole steam expansion thing evening the resulting force out more than I think? 1:11:00 - You could always sleep on the couch in the station office next to you so it gets light again 😄 1:20:10 - That's the release times we work with over here 😄 45 to 60 seconds release time from a full service brake (! not from dumped) in the brake setting used in goods trains 😁 1:39:50 - That does look like a decent choo choo now 👍 1:45:30 - Yepp, really enjoyable episode 🥰
Yeah I suppose climbing in between isn't so much fun either. I see. 130 km/h through a switch must be a long switch! In my experience, higher cutoff and lower throttle is better in slick conditions. Likely for that reason.
@@Hyce777 Yes, but not as long as it should but the feels of it 😄 Though in seriousness I guess it's something with the gradient of curvature change that's wrong there and makes it so unpleasant. We have way faster turnovers, too, for 200 km/h in the diverging track, in France and Spain there are even some for 220.

Warning: This comment ended up way, way longer than I was expecting. I just bought the game earlier today and have been having a lot of fun with it so far :) I've tried one silly switching thing so far, which was trying to put the back job of 3 in front of the 2 DE2s by doing something kind of like a dutch drop on the entrance to the Harbor because the front and back jobs both had to go to the E yard and the middle one had to go to the D yard. However, it went horribly wrong (as expected). I had the front section go to the right (towards the military area), and thought I had left the back part with enough speed to make it past, but apparently it just barely wasn't enough, and the back car stopped on the switch. So I decided to decouple the engines from the front section and move them around the triangle to pull them just a bit forwards to clear the switch, not realizing that the military yard has a gate that's closed without the license for it. So the front engine crashed into the gate at a decently high speed (luckily not derailing, just taking 50% damage), and there wasn't enough space on that side of the switch to be able to flip it to go around as I was planning, so I had both of my engines stuck, one partially damaged, completely blocked in by the other set of cars without an engine. I tried pushing them with the handcar, just in case it worked somehow, but the handcar can't push 450 tons of train, unsurprisingly. So I explored the harbor, and found a third DE2 after about 5 minutes of looking (it's really easy to get lost, I've learned). I was able to use that to get everything unstuck, then left it in the D yard just in case my second dutch drop attempt failed. Then I tried to dutch drop the D yard cars all the way from the main track to the yard while trying to kick the set of cars that was now in front of the engine into their track in the E yard. The first time I forgot the switch and everything ended up on the D yard track, but I was able to just reverse and try again. And it almost worked, but yet again I didn't give that set of cars enough speed, so they stopped halfway to the D yard. Luckily, I had that extra engine waiting for it! Yay for thinking ahead :) Putting the last two jobs on the E yard track went pretty smoothly after that, so I finally turned in the jobs, 15 minutes after the time bonus (it should've been easy, I barely had any licenses unlocked, so the time bonus was still very long). Somehow still made a profit though. And since then, I've been running very heavy trains with all three DE2s around the harbor and steel mill, including two in the rain that I was very close to getting stuck on the hill out of the harbor on. I managed to use all of the sand from full just to get to the steel mill from the harbor, but it just barely made it. I've had one derailment so far, and I still have no idea what happened, because just the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd to last cars, but not the very last one, derailed at the entrance to the harbor (apparently that place is dangerous). Except for the cars just behind those that were disconnected, which was another failed dutch drop attempt, that never even made it to the switch because they were going so slow they stopped at the bottom of the hill. The rest of that job went fine though, and I got the time bonus still somehow. I hope I got the terms I used in that comment correct... Anyway, I just felt like sharing my first experience with the game. I'll get back to watching the video now :)
Also I tried a spicy dunk in the military base and blew the harbour to smithereens, the boyz got nothing on what I can only assume is nuclear warheads. Edit. It wasn't a spicy dunk it was a third person couple without compressing the cars and they jerked together and went kaboom

Again! Keyboard controls with T and G! Its your throttle on normal locos and it works on the hand car too!
Happy Bday Hyce and your favorite game DV (Derail Valley!!)
A day late, but:
Regarding the sleep in the beginning, as long as you have the job cards in hand, they don't (shouldn't) despawn.
(Not entirely sure about wrecked cars, but I think they clear when the job is trashed.)
If you really want to reroll the jobs given at a location, trashing every job on the table before leaving is a good way to make sure everything gets refreshed.
Hyce writes a childrens book: 'Toot toot, goes the tiniest little Doot!'
Today I never thought a duplex mod would be in derail valley. They really overcooked this one with the valve gear!
I’m not giving you lip, Hyce… I’m giving you the stick figure meme where the guy has a sad face and is poking something on the ground, saying “come on… Kenosha!”
Possibly one of my favourite episodes of this series Hyce :)
Thank you for your videos and everything you do to entertain us. You helped me to get threw a hard time of sickness, so i just wanted to say: Thank you Hyce!
When you are coupling cars, don't pull the brake right before you *BANG* because you will come to a dead stop after transferring your momentum. If you are going to *BANG*, be confident about it and follow through. Then, you might just be able to hook before the cars separate.
you dont even need to be looking at the bar to crank the hamdcart also it can be yeeted off some surpringly highspeed turns if your good with it
9:10 starts shunting
18:16 useful information i cant summarise 22:10 end of lesson with hyce, also note the front engine can slip esayer as theres less weight wich makes the wheels out of sink.
Hyce i would love a video on that little shunting engine
30:45 starts the journey, up a hill
42:00 flat part, slowed to pass sawmill, he gose into the wrong switch
51:00 going through the yard (and trying to find the right setting for more traction, gets speed then slows down and soon loses water
The cat was the best part of this video.
Lots of clutch saves thru the vid but at the end we want out in a good bang. XD
Wow, I've never heard of anyone switching with a fireless duplex before!
lmao
Wonderful job timing the Kenosha at the end there :)
Can you feed the cat?
Wow gold plated water 😳 $$$$
Very good to see you playing on the knives edge, is making the trip more interesting 🤔 😊 👍🍷🍾🍺🍻
1:45:10. I like how as soon as he said Kanosha wont didn't play Kanosha started playing
And here I thought we got through all the chaos and were going to escape without Kenosha..... I should know better. This is Hyce. #kenoshaforever
PS. and my lantern is gold!!!!! :)
Yes! :D
You can bail the engine, just there is no in cab control for it. I do it all the time on the standard difficulty
1:46:30 The Pennsylvania Railroad destroying the last duplex 1953 colorized.
EDIT: timestamp
The first ES&D employee to derail this handcar gets $10, a piss cup, and a pack of beer. May the best fool win.
so the up arrow/down arrow under a speed sign indicates a 20KPH+ change in limit at the next sign. I usually read it as 60 into 40 etc.
Coal in the hole: ❌
Rocks in the box: ✅
I’ve gotten the hand card to do 160 I was racing a DE6 notch 10 and out ran it no problem, but you have to be really in sync with your scroll wheel
"The fire temps pegged, maybe the water comes back, maybe we cthulu"
*Proceeeds to not use damper*
Now you have to wait outside till contact is made and then climb in-between (and there you have the reason why so many don't care, obviously 😂)
33:40 - "Bad practice" as in "ripping the wheelset out its bearing bad practice", yes 😝 Though you can get away with it in modern electric traction since asynchronous three phase engines don't get stupid fast when spinning.
1:11:00 - You could always sleep on the couch in the station office next to you so it gets light again 😄
1:20:10 - That's the release times we work with over here 😄 45 to 60 seconds release time from a full service brake (! not from dumped) in the brake setting used in goods trains 😁
1:39:50 - That does look like a decent choo choo now 👍
1:45:30 - Yepp, really enjoyable episode 🥰
Yeah I suppose climbing in between isn't so much fun either. I see. 130 km/h through a switch must be a long switch!
In my experience, higher cutoff and lower throttle is better in slick conditions. Likely for that reason.
@@Hyce777 Yes, but not as long as it should but the feels of it 😄 Though in seriousness I guess it's something with the gradient of curvature change that's wrong there and makes it so unpleasant. We have way faster turnovers, too, for 200 km/h in the diverging track, in France and Spain there are even some for 220.
I find it funny that it exploded in C4 🤣
I get mad skoomu vibes with this loco
Imagine being a Yard manager in Derail valley and watching Hyce just high ball through a yard.
You guys at the museum need to let us run a hand car around the yard!! I really want to do that! Or get one of the speedsters running and have speedster days!!
19:15 dose 20s make a cute little chuff when the bar is at that close point to center
Do a really long train like grab as many cars as possible
I don’t know how much you can move with it but I have heard of some people moving cars in derail valley using the handcar
Hyce before running the Duplex, probably: "Oh cool! A Duplex! What can possibly go wrong? :D"
Hyce after running the Duplex, probably: "NEVER AGAIN! D:"
Remember when the video started and Hyce said he wanted to drive in the daylight? Welp.
Hi ! The locomotive is just so cool !! For the handcar, you can may test to push it with a train or launch it in a downhill to see if it can derail !
The concept of the Duplex is truly fascinating, sure the Pennslyvania Railroad definitely drank too much whiskey when it came to the wheel arrangements, I'm curious to see how well the T1 Trust, once they complete PRR 5550, how well they can control the wheelslip. And as you probably know about the PRR's Duplexs the Q2 4-4-6-4 Duplex was a water hog
Aw, those poor trains!
EDIT: Hyce, this is episode 30! There were two episode 26s.

We are pleased that our previous offer of credit has been satisfactory to hold your railroad together. However, various BROWN moments between this operation and your parallel operation have caused us to question your credit rating. Your rating is what some would call poor...we are no longer supporting your endeavors and we wish you the best in the future.
Sincerely,
Hiei

when i first found the cat in vr, i swear to god, I was trying to pet it for a solid 40 minutes
Nice Blazing Saddles reference!
Warning: This comment ended up way, way longer than I was expecting.
I just bought the game earlier today and have been having a lot of fun with it so far :)
I've tried one silly switching thing so far, which was trying to put the back job of 3 in front of the 2 DE2s by doing something kind of like a dutch drop on the entrance to the Harbor because the front and back jobs both had to go to the E yard and the middle one had to go to the D yard.
Yay for thinking ahead :)
Putting the last two jobs on the E yard track went pretty smoothly after that, so I finally turned in the jobs, 15 minutes after the time bonus (it should've been easy, I barely had any licenses unlocked, so the time bonus was still very long).
Hyce the BE2 works with the remote control. Which you have!
45:45 is why I always make sure to set my radio back to Switch mode after using it for something else. Not that it would have helped here.
for some reason I never realized a duplex was two engines in one, I just always figured they were one, but just piped differently
I love how similar our play style is, throw jobs on floor, trash office, pet kitty cat. Is this the meta?
Also I tried a spicy dunk in the military base and blew the harbour to smithereens, the boyz got nothing on what I can only assume is nuclear warheads. Edit. It wasn't a spicy dunk it was a third person couple without compressing the cars and they jerked together and went kaboom
Today,Hyde drives a duplex and blows it up and replaces it with a Penn Central locomotive! Muahahahaha!
9 days is a quite small eternity 😅
Thank you 😊
Super independent Fluffles nearly halted all Operations today because of ES&D shenanigans. But he decided Tonnage First Safety Last and gave the crew the go ahead to Kenosha their train if necessary.
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS VID WHEN IS SAW THE MOD UPDATE
Nouuu~ 😆At least get them passenger licences before you blow up into another 50mil debt xD
Great to see some more Derail Valley.
An engineers bucket list: don’t derail, do well, don’t do funny things like crash.
Hyce: try not to derail on purpose, try not to shet yourself and don’t crash the game to the point you can’t run it anymore.
I just went to the national RR museum in Green Bay and they do have a Big Boy on display. 4017 I believe
Obviously non operational but you can go in the cab. Lot of neat trains there. Even the Dwight D. Eisenhower A4 is there with some cabs. Loved going there
The duplex is best for passenger jobs. Speedy Boi get peeps where need go.
The open water hatch during rain should provide a 0.1% efficient on water
1:07:59 I know it probably won’t work but could you use the handcar for shunting because you can summon that for free
Hey hyce, not sure if it works this way on the real thing, but I think you may have been drafting so hard with the dampers open fully that you were pulling in enough air to actually cool/smother(?) the fire. No idea if the steam sim is meant to work that way but does it work that way in real life?
"it feels like its been an eternity" yes hyce, that is right. It has been an eternity. Anyways, A NEW VIDEO LETS GOOOOOOOOO
