    Fun fact about the S282 rearranged mod: Locomotives with out lead trucks are much more likely to derail than a standard S282 and conversely, versions with 4 wheel lead trucks are much less likely to derail at speed. So drive carefully with your new 0-8-2, or, ya know, don't.

      I do not know, but either he must watched video in 2 times speed (wich is unacceptable in our company), or worse- he did SKIPPED the parts or almost ENTIRE video before making his calculations.
      I don't know exactly, what policies and laws insurance departament in our company are obligued to follow, but Dear Management should pay closer atention to his work, and propably investigate this particular incident.

    The US did have plenty of steam in urban areas during the steam age. I think the difference is just that they didn’t over-stoke the locomotives like modern US tourist railroads do, so there were less cinders and soot to begin with. I think that the reason that Britain had a problem may be that their small loading gauge limited the size of their cylinders, which prevented them from getting enough draft to have a properly self-cleaning smokebox. Additionally, the tendency to use a damper in Europe might have meant that in many low power conditions, the locomotive might not have been physically able to create enough draft to self-clean the smokebox, leading to cinders accumulating in it during those periods and requiring cleaning anyway.

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  4 місяці тому +5

      That makes sense.

    • @motta9784
      @motta9784 4 місяці тому +2

      Many later Uk engines did have self cleaning smoke boxes, including all of the BR Standard designs, you can tell which have self cleaning by the letters “SC” on the smoke box door (or nearby, depending on the engine)

    • @motta9784
      @motta9784 4 місяці тому +2

      To directly quote from Wikipedia “British Railways standard classes use this design, where a robust mesh grille is incorporated into the smokebox, forming a filter between the front tubeplate and the exhaust. Any large pieces of char passing through the boiler tubes tend to be broken up on impact with the mesh, creating finer particles that are swept up into the chimney instead of accumulating in the bottom of the smokebox. This does not negate the need to clean out the smokebox but reduces the amount of work that has to be done. In the best-case scenario, smokebox cleaning would be necessary only between boiler washouts, typically at intervals of two weeks.”

It’s negatively impacted relationships and my own personal enjoyment of hobbies at times similar to you, and it’s a hard blind spot to accept. This is especially true when anything less than total pedantry in your professional life can potentially put lives at risk.

    With respect to VR: I find that seated VR with my Quest 2 is the most enjoyable way to play DV in VR. You don't have to worry about staying centered in your clear area while walking around. You just move using the controllers and lean around when you need to reach something. It might be easier to fit that way.

    On European smokeboxes: Swedish steamers were quite neat in that they had internal spark arresters and cinder cones.
    Below the smokebox is a cast iron funnel with a plate at the bottom and when you yank the plate out the soot and cinders can be raked down the funnel into a tube between the frames into the ash pit. No shovelling required.
    I believe it was inspired by American designs.

    You know what makes the 0-8-2 even more cursed is the fact they actually existed. My beloved Grand Trunk Western actually rebuilt a handful of their Mikados into 0-8-2s between 1936 & 37 to replace their 5 class P-4-d 0-8-0s which were equipped with abnormally large (for a steam switcher) 56in drivers for use on heavy interchange drags in the Chicago & Detroit areas. Needless to say, crews came to despise the P-4-ds for their rough ride at speed and all 5 were permanently reassigned to Canadian National by 1942. Ironically, what the class lacked in comfort they more than made up for in power, being some of the most powerful engines “The Trunk” ever owned, putting out a max tractive effort of 55,408lbs

    By the way cleaning smokeboxes is the most fun thing to do, especially if you have been running the train for half the day up the a really steep narrow gauge line as a stoaker without any replacement crew. (Well not without a second crew but without a man that helps you durning the up going part of the journey. Our working day looked like that: Crew one comes early in the morning and starts prepairing the loco. Second crew comes an hour bevore departure and takes over the loco and shunts the train + loco to the plattform to pick up the passengers then they take the train up the line. Loco makes really great noises. After the train makes it to the end of the line crew one takes over, puts loco on the other end of the train, coasts down the line. At the beginning point crew two takes over again, shunts train home, brings loco home, cleans smokebox and ashbox goes home wakes up the next day with an awful pain in every single muscle of their body ´cause they were not in form and never went to the gym in their lives. I´m more often working in crew two than in crew one. By the way I work at the Waldviertelbahn. )

    The turntable in Albuquerque that is being restored is a diesel-hydraulic unit. It would be a cool addition to the Turntables 101 video.

    Hyce brother as another fellow railroader and railroad preservationist I feel your pain with the choo choo games and content creation on the tickytockies but I found one rule that helps me get through the burnouts…
    I get paid to be safe and keep the trains on the track in real life in either maintenance or operations.
    So in the games I pretty much let my inner Casey Jones out and see how much of the envelope I can push before I know the physics shouldnt allow it or the stuffs just gets all Kenosha but that’s my thoughts on that one for ya brother… cuzz I kinda figured it out after watching that video waiting at interchange for NS to bring us our slopedy boys and going back to finish it and it wasn’t there lol
    Your in my prayers glad all is well and you took your time getting back to what we’re both passionate about the choochoos
    Cheers from Your high iron brother in the East Grayson

    I tried Youtubing for a while, got stuck on Cities Skylines but wanted to play other games.
    Got near no views on the other games, and so there was pressure to keep cities videos releasing despite being burnt out on that game.
    On top of that, no patreons so no money, so I was like, time to focus more on my job.

    Hey Hyce, I was playing around with double heading steam in derail valley and discovered that you can effectively cut out the breaks of one of the locos.
    If you place one of them in lap, than it does not fight agaisnt sets you place on the other locomotive. While not a true cut off, its worked well for me on sevral trips so far in game

    There were at least four of the US exports - the S118 also existed. Likely others too?

    Riding on the cab would be really neat to investigate by video! :D Tell us camera, how did the exhaust behave? How close did the cinders get? How did it change with engine work? How bad does it hurt to be hit with burning coal? (maybe not so much that last one)

    @Hyce are flanges strong enough to hold locomotive weight or they get damaged when you derail?
