  • Highlights of the 1990 Great Race held on the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst. A truly great race in Australian Motor Racing history with Ford Sierra RS500's setting the pace ahead of the race followed by the Holden Commodores of Perkins Engineering and the Holden Racing Team. 1990 was also the debut of the then new Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 from Gibson Motorsport, a car then in its infancy of Australian development.
The race on the other was a different story, with Jim Richards starting 11th (10th as Alan Jones starting 10th started from the pit lane) and leading the race after 7 laps before pulling an eventual 40 second lead on 2nd place. As the race progressed, many of the top Ford Sierra's experienced both tyre and mechanical related issues and the front running Holden Commodores setting a strong and steady pace working their up through the field. Sadly for the Gibson Motorsport team, in the later stages of the race the R32 GT-R experienced a drivetrain issue seeing it tumble down the order. The closing stages of the race setup a suspenseful finish with a battle between the eventual podium finishers all in contention for the race win.
In the end, this bathurst was a truly great display of the Group A regulations with a wide variety of makes and models filling out the finishing field. The race was won by Win Percy and Allan Grice driving the Holden Racing Team Commodore VL TWR, the teams first Bathurst success. 2nd place was taken by the second of the Shell Ford Sierra RS500's of Jeff Allam and Paul Radisich. 3rd place was taken by Larry Perkins and Tomas Mezera in the Perkins Engineering prepared Holden Commodore VL TWR.

The Sierra's were quick in a straight line, by 92 they were 600--650hp But wheelspin ie traction was their problem, they would light up the tires very very easily!!!!! Even in 4th gear, wheelspin NO problem!! Tires were the BIG problem for the Sierra's putting that power thu 2WD ( rear )

The GTR was a sensation car no doubt. But it should never have been accepted in the category. With twin turbos and 4WD/4WS it was like bringing a gun to knife fight.
Credit goes to Gibson for expoiting the loopholes in the regulations of course. But those first dozen laps spelt the death of Group A which was a fantastic category until that time.
It's easy to say that the competition should have adapted and followed suit. But where would it have ended?

Agree ... Sierras were at their end here. rule changes would have been a good idea too even things out. I always felt they should have limited the size of fuel load or something to even the playing field keep it close. Force cars with advantages to have to make an extra pit or two in the course of the race or have to drive light footed to some degree. Still great stuff. Another old series thats pretty good is american scca endurance racing. Late 80s to 99. Showroom stock minimal changes out on track very diverse fields weights power etc. good videos on here

It's a bit more complex than that, but there's no doubt that Nissan were very clever building a car that fitted within the rules. And Fred and his team were instrumental in developing it into what it became. The other manufacturers could have developed new cars but they all knew the writing was on the wall for Group A, it had become too expensive to keep building homologation cars they couldn't sell and they were losing interest, as you would. I believe the UK and Europe had already abandoned it in favour of Super Tourers in 1991, in 1992 Australia and Japan were the only countries still running Group A regs. The "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" wasn't working any more with the Sierra not available in Australia, the GTR in limited supply, and the VL Commodore superseded by the VN, which wasn't eligible for Group A. Pretty dumb.
It's fun to imagine though. Ford UK had a 4WD platform in the Sapphire rally car. Holden developed a 4WD system for the Monaro Coupe 4 not long after. BMW were developing a V8 for the new M3. Ford Australia could even have gone with the turbo barra Falcons. Toyota's new (at the time) turbo Supra was in development. And of course Nissan would soon bring out the new GTR, the R33. How good would that have been, to see all those cars racing around.

@@TP-ie3hj the Balance of Performance rules in modern GT3 works pretty well, with power and/or weight restrictions on the various manufacturers to keep it even, combined with the "win penalty" imposed for victory, has meant the category is pretty even and we see different winners at every round. I suppose they did try that with the GTR back in '92 but Fred Gibson was too clever and kept finding ways to get around the penalties. Things were a bit more lax back then too, cheating was pretty rife amongst all the top teams. The BMWs got done for illegal fuel, Brock got done for filling the on-board fire extinguisher with freon and pointing it at the intercooler, the Texaco cars got done for illegal wheel arches, Longhurst ran illegal wheels, Dick Johnson got pinged for illegal turbos, some of the Commodores had illegal brakes, and of course the Nissans bent the rules multiple times with inlet restrictor bypasses and secret boost levels and whatnot. Every time they copped a weight penalty Fred just upped the engine power and no one had any idea how he was able to keep doing it (there was a knob behind a hidden panel on the dash that even the drivers weren't allowed to touch). And that was just the stuff they found out about. Everyone was at it. Rules are enforced much more tightly now, these days you get pinged for having your bloody drink bottle in the wrong place, there's a line between enforcing the rules and stifling development which modern categories seem quite happy to cross. It's kind of sad.

Ford even had the architecture ready to go with the 4WD Sapphire rally cars but Group A was losing popularity as a category (and would soon be gone) so they didn't bother to develop it. They started pouring money into the Mondeo Super Tourer program and had plenty of success so in retrospect it was probably a smart decision financially.
I don't know that they would have beaten the GTR though - don't forget Nissan would have continued to develop their car had Group A continued. A 3-litre twin turbo six is always going to produce more usable power than a 2.2 litre single turbo 4, those Nissan RB engines are legendary now, there's guys comfortably getting over 1000hp from them so there's no reason Nissan Motorsport couldn't have done the same.
It would have been good to see though, and throw in a 4WD Commodore (Holden developed the Monaro Coupe 4 a few years later so it could have been done), and maybe offer a turbo barra Falcon as the local Ford option instead of the Sierra, now that would have been interesting.

The secret to the winning Commodore was actually its brakes. Wally Storey figured out that the homologated brakes for the Commodores were the same size as those used on the TWR Jaguar sports cars. So, HRT being an arm of TWR, they got a supply of the Jaguar sports car brakes for the 2 HRT cars at Bathurst. All 100% legal.
The thinking was if the brakes could stop a Jag from over 210 mph at Le Mans hour after hour and only needed changing 2 or 3 times in 24 hours, they could stop the Commodores at Bathurst where their top speed was considerably less at 172 mph. It was a theory that worked. Yes they had to do a mid-race pad change at Bathurst, but that was because the Commodore, while obviously being slower than the Jaguar XJR-12's, was also 425 kg (937 lbs) heavier.

The Nissan GT-R that raced was actually 100% illegal.
Saturday afternoon practice is over and the Nissan mechanics make a startling discovery. A hub is broken on the car and at the track there is simply no way to fix it. The car can't race like that, it will have to be scratched. The problem is that the boss of NISMO was in town and to have to pull out of the race before it starts with a mechanical failure was not an option. It would be losing face with the Japanese and Gibbo didn't want or need that. So, a plan is devised.
Saturday night, under the cover of darkness in the quiet of the Bathurst pits after most of the teams had headed back to town, the Nissan team garage is shut to prying eyes, but its a hive of activity inside. Everything from the lame GT-R that qualified 11th is being transferred to the show car, the spare, the car Mark Skaife had debuted at Mallala during the ATCC. And everything means everything, the stickers, the compliance plates, the television equipment for the racecam (I suspect with a little help from Ch.7 techs via Mike Raymond), the engine, the gearbox. Everything. Now, this is actually quite illegal. Teams could not swap cars and race a different car to what they qualified (crashed is a different story. See Dick Johnson 1983). But, they got away with it and they raced the spare car.
And it wasn't until the mid-2000's before Fred Gibson spilled the beans about the car swap. He also told how in 1992 they fooled CAMS into thinking that the pop-off valves they were forced to use had dropped the GT-R's power from 640 to 480 bhp. They really only dropped to about 600, but the test equipment (built by the Nissan team.....) was set to show CAMS exactly what they wanted to see. The valves did work, to a point. They were the same ones used in Formula One in 1987 and 1988 and via team sponsor Shell, who also sponsored McLaren at the time, they learned how to use the pop-off valves so that they weren't as restrictive as what the officials thought.
