  • Highlights of the 1986 Great Race held on the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst. A truly up and down event the 1986 race proved to be with privateer Mike Burgmann sadly losing his life in a high speed crash in the early stages of the race. As a result, this would be the last Bathurst 1000 event held on the "full straight" as for 1987, 'The Chase' was added in order to meet international standards and to slow the cars down as the 1000km event became part of the first and only World Touring Car Championship to be held later in 1987.
    It was a day of triumph for long time battlers Allan Grice and Graeme Bailey as they took their privateer Chickadee Holden Commodore VK to dominant victory ahead of John Harvey and Neal Lowe in the Mobil Holden Dealer Team Commodore VK. 3rd place went to pole sitter Gary Scott and Terry Shiel in the Peter Jackson DR30 Nissan Skyline Turbo.

      Dick Johnson was no longer a battler after the public support following the rock incident he had the finances of the factory teams. Alan Grice was also well financed for a privateer.

      @@noelwebb6843 These people have no idea and only go by the media 'image' .Johnson was never a 'battler' always had money had so much money he was a self funded racer until the 80s rock then had Ford money then had mega Shell money. Larry Perkins not the battler he imaged either ,he was the factory backed driver during HSV era and HDT era then the wiley coyote took HSVs Castrol sponsor money off walkinshaws HSV team to form his own mega buck Castrol racing team when he then won as a "battler" .

    It is a tragedy that Mike Burgmann died at this racetrack on this day.
    Motor racing is highly regarded as the most dangerous sport in the world. And these men(and some women) are well aware of the dangers of motor racing.
    Mike Burgmann is not the first racecar driver to be killed, and he, sadly, won' t be the last.

    Whilst the death of Mike Burgmann was a contributing factor to the reconstruction, the primary reason was due to the track gaining FIA accreditation which prohibited Conrod being as long as it was. The case was installed to facilitate the 1987 World Touring Car round.

    • @noelwebb6843
      @noelwebb6843 2 місяці тому

      Probably a 50/50, they had previously chosen to keep the full length of conrod straight over joining the world group A championship. After this event they realised that they did need to reconsider this, it also saw the introduction of the safety car. I have to admit at the time I was against breaking up Conrod but now love the chase.

      Lack of downforce really hurt the Nissan's, they should of had a massive handling advantage over the Holdens & Fords but just didn't.

      Fucken parity mate. Sooo fucken disappointing I tell ya. From really when it all started back in 1963 to 2007, they were all the good years. Production cars, Group C, Group A, 5.0L Touring Car Championship and the start of V8 Supercars. Now it’s just all parity.

      For me the early years were best!! Basically showroom standard cars!! Imagine in a Falcon with vinyl bench seat, 😅🤣your ass sliding about as you go around corners, after about 2015 it went downhill rapidly but i have to admit Bathurst 2013 2014 for me was as good as it gets FORD wins two years in a row awesome ( yes i am a Ford guy incase you did not guess 🤣 ) and of course the 90s with Larry Perkins 93 95 97 i mean what else can say he was THE Man then!! In 93 using a Holden engine No Less all others were Chev, they said he won,t qualify 1st and or win the race WRONG WRONG WRONG he won both!!!!! I was there trackside LIVE in 1999 Absolutely AWESOME!!!! 👍👍👍👍

      The drivers of those cars were REAL men!! NO ABS NO traction control NOTHING except a big snorting 351 Cleveland V8 , a guy i know he has driver one just a short distance, he it just wanted to go sideways lite up the rear tires , etc, he has owned other V8 cars but Nothing like that, the brake tires etc on those cars from the factory were Poor to say the least!!
