  • Former Texas Governor Ann Richards died Wednesday night after a six-month battle with cancer. She was 73 years old. Under the banner of promoting a "New Texas," Richards appointed more women and more minorities to state posts than any of her predecessors. We play an address by Richards speaking in 2004 and speak about her life with veteran Texas lawyer Sissy Farenthold.

I had the pleasure of attending a speech given by Governor Richards in Indianapolis back in 1995. She wa phenomenal. She always told it like it was!
Considering I live in South Bend, this video is doubly fun!
Rest in Peace, Dear lady. We'll miss you!

She was my political idol. I never had a chance to meet her, but certainly wish I did. God bless her and may she keep them laughing in heaven :)

She started elected public service as a Travis County Commissioner in my precinct of working class mixed race folks in northeast Austin. She didn't walk on water, she made mistakes, she was not perfect, yet she made many of us Texans prouder than we ever had been before or since when she was elected governor. She did this by treating ALL of the citizens of Texas like we mattered. Finally someone represented US, we the people. She attacked the other party with humor, with facts, with a public regard and a kind of class that has not been seen before or since. She delivered many speeches like this with such deadpan black humor that even Bill Hicks or George Carlin would be envious!

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth in Texas during Governor Richards’ tenure was nearly 3 percent. During Perry’s 11-year stint as Governor, job growth has averaged less than 2 percent per year. And Ann Richards increased job growth without resorting to Rick Perry’s short-sighted plan to cut public education.

Can you name a definitive achievement of her term as governor?

Speegs23 She cut insurance cost by not allowing the insurance companies to get together and abuse the system. She was against all big business lobbyist's which helped win her the first election but came back to hurt her in the election against Bush.

    • @Speegs23
      @Speegs23 9 років тому

LOL, she lobbied for big tobacco after leaving office, which drives up insurance rates and cancer rates and was the ultimate corrupt big business to shill for. Way to spin myths.

Not spinning anything. You asked for a definitive achievement while she was governor and I gave you one. I pointed out the lobbyists backing bush in her second run for governor as one of her reasons for not being re elected. If you had of said your above statement first I would more than likely have agreed with you.

Governor Ann Richards restored the pride in all of us from Texas no matter where we all are in the world, she, unlike George W. Bush, is the"real"grand Texas woman in everything she did.I was in Europe when she had passed on and myself and a few other Texans I met in Europe, were in shock and wished we were in Austin to pay our respects to the "pride of Texas".

In 1992 it was Ann Richards speech at the Democratic Convention that made me move from being an independent to being a Democrat. Not sure todays Democrats are the same as back then and God knows they need another Ann.

    • @Speegs23

Nope, none of the above true, the Texas Governor is a weak position constitutionally with little more power than appointments and the veto.
And she championed the Texas Lottery Commission under the pledge all of it would go to education, she then let her partisan cronies divert all the funds to the general fund where none of it goes to education.
Lt. Governor Bob Bullock, a fellow Democrat, actually endorsed George W. Bush for Governor and president. And as president of the Senate he was a far more influential leader of legislative agendas than the passive role Richards would play.

If that's the only "lesson" from Governor Richards you take away, I am truly, truly sorry that you seemed to have not appreciated just how fortunate we Texans were during her time as Governor.
This state had never been so fortunate to have such a wonderful Governor as she was, and if it has one again, it won't be for a quite some time.

I think the nation really liked Texas when Ms. Richards was Governor. she made sure we knew the good and not so good about the state she so loved; and, had a way to express this with humor that was part of this great and intelligent southern belle. I don't think a lot of us in the north, east and west ever really knew what her political affiliation was, she just made us respect and care about Texas and her people. Again, a great lady, with a wonderful sense of humor. May she rest in peace.

look man... dont talk about wanting votes being corrupt. Republican conservatives do the same thing to the Christian vote. Hundreds of "conservative" leaders will do anything to get religious votes, even if they really don't believe in them. California is very much healthy economically, and immigrants costing the state billions of dollars is more fear than fact. Fear of their skin, traditions, language, "way of life" i think.

I think there is some rewriting of history being done in some of the comments. As Governor, she was a strong woman who did good and bad for Texas. In her good times she was elected, when things became bad, she was defeated. RIP Governor.

controling the border with Mexico, isnt a sing of power. (even tough, California is better at it, their immigrant death rates and arrest have gone down, simply cause they have a smaller border, and tighter security). California isn't s stupid as to just shut off the incoming immigrants. It has a huge hispanic population (L.A.) and again.... it is BY ITS SELF the 9th biggest economy in the world.
