My son was born in 1988. I was too busy then, running around to make ends meet. I had never heard this lady talk. I actually cried now that I did. Rest for ever in peace Mrs. Richards.

She'd have been great, but you're forgetting that when this speech was given in 1988, she was Texas State Treasurer. She had not yet become Governor (not till 1991). Until this speech almost nobody outside Texas had heard of her, so she didn't have the high profile that would have allowed for a successful run. It's a nice thought, but it never would have happened.

what a real Texan sounds like. It's long, but telling, poignant and funny, and it shows us how far we've slipped in the area of american humor and statesmanship. no teleprompter, just a depression era success story, and the 1st woman elected Governor of Texas.1988, yea, Dukakis was the nominee, but after listening to ann Richards you come away thinking that the Dems ran the wrong candidate.

This has to be one of the best speeches in modern American political history. And during a decade when the Democratic Party had gotten lost in the weeds with a bunch of painfully boring far-left policy-wonks (Mondale and then Dukakis) this speech was a harbinger of a more moderate, plain-spoken, and down-to earth Democratic Party to come just a few short years later. We need more Democrats like Ann around today.

Pablo123456x Perhaps. We all fall on a spectrum. Moderation in political sphere appeals to a greater segment of the voting population and often makes those candidates electable, for better or worse. Being a moderate (or conservative) Democrat isn’t always so bad (as may be a moderate “liberal” republican). If we’ve learned anything over the last 3 years, it’s we need someone with reason. The impulse is to overcorrect and overcompensate with an ideologically opposite candidate. That candidate rarely wins and when she/he does, it’s rarely, if ever, the salvation we expected.

Well did you include the fact that this woman raised taxes, something she said she would not do, failed to keep her promises like regulating the insurance industry, didn't stop one single execution from the death penalty, she was bad at selecting people to key positions and the result was scandal after scandal, she also didn't get along with VIP people in her own party, case in point Bob Bullock!! and if that wasn't enough, she underestimated George W. Bush a young but determined politician, the result was that even do she outspend Bush in the re-election, she lost and her career was over, talking a good game isn't enough, you need to deliver the goods if you want to get re-elected at least in the state of Texas

No, but really, Wendy Davis would have been a helluva governor! She ran a twelve hour long fillibuster while serving district 10 as a member of Congress. Watch the HBO documentary on Ann Richards. We need more straight talking, strong people in public service. What would America look like today if Karl Rove hadn't come on the scene??

Karl Rove and Roger Ailes did more damage to America than any other 2 people in history.

I am a PROUD American. Came here after watching documentary on HBO. Watching Governor Richards I ask, where are the Great AMERICANS. Republican or Democrat? Tea Party or Liberal? Where are the Great AMERICANS? How can we be America the Great if we are not filled with or lead by GREAT AMERICANS!

jptvi thompson THIS is one of (if not THE) best, most vexing question I ask myself. Where are our statesmen and states women that lead garner respect by Americans at large and both sides of the aisle?

This was, in my opinion, the most entertaining and skillful bit of speech writing and oration that has ever been at a political convention. Former Texas governor Ann Richards at her best. Rest in peace, my dear. You did your best 🎉

I don't know much about this woman, but I know a great deal about politics and history. The fact that I have not seen one negative comment about this POLITICIAN, really says something. Maybe she should have ran for president.

+Matthew Lewis Indeed, it isn't 1988 anymore...back when Dems actually were of the people and for the people. The Democratic Party now is nothing but a big corrupt oligarchic machine with major bots like Shillary...but look what has happened to the Republican Party. From Reagan at its pinnacle to idiots like Dubya and Palin and now to the biggest jokes of all...Trump and Cruz. Don't know which one is worse. In less than 30 years, how far both parties have fallen.

12:40 Every politician talks about students, but a true leader (like Governor Richards) remembers that, without good teachers who earn a living wage and have schools that aren't falling down around them, students will never be successful.

After hearing the news about the new play opening on Broadway, "Ann", written and performed by the wonderful actress Holland Taylor (perhaps best known as the mother on "Two and a Half Men", I went back and listened again tonight to this speech. It still moves me today as much as it did when I heard it live during the convention coverage, and is as relevant today as it was then. Maybe even more so.
