From 1996 to 2004, at the peak of the slice of life revolution, Craig Bartlett presented a NickToon that did it better than anyone else. Hey Arnold! is a beloved icon of 90s pop culture, being funny, charming and likeable from start to finish. See how it fared in the worlds of claymation and comics, against Nickelodeon executives, and now, a pedantic cartoon nerd.

Also, I remember Craig Bartlett talking about why they kept Jamil. Apparently they audiitoned a lot of kids but no one else was "Gerald enough". So apparently they tried to replace him at first, but couldn't figure out anyone who could replace him. At least for Francesca Marie Smith, as a woman, she can still just about do a child's voice. Also, the older voice actually fits Helga a lot more as her tastes and vocabulary developed over the seasons (compare her poems in "The Little Pink Book" to something like "School Play" and you'll notice that her language is more sophisticated).

Yaaaay! You know my opinion on this already, but love that you used its own reference to itself. I don't think I would have appreciated this show as much if I watched it as a kid. I'd miss all the little psychological parts of the episode - and I'm not just talking about Helga here. There's nods to lots of psychology and human life. The emotional core of the show is what separates it from other slice-of-life kids' shows. It took itself a bit more seriously than things like Recess. The wackier episodes seem to come from the characters and reactions more than the situations, yet they still feel real. Yeah, obviously the characters are a little too mature for nine, but at least all of them are on about the same level. Also, I took Psychology as a Social Science just as I was really into the show, so it was a perfect time for me to count at least five defense mechanisms we looked at that you can see Helga exhibiting at any one time. Particularly emotion displacement (treating Arnold as if she feels the opposite way towards him that she does) and aggression.
Also, just a note on something I heard that was confirmed by the creators: Arnold's grandma isn't actually senile at all, that's just an excuse she uses to do and say whatever she wants, now that she's old enough for it to be believable. That's why she always seems to say the right things when she needs to.
Revenge of The Island is next? Wow. I'm going to look forward to hearing about every single character. I don't know if I've ever mentioned exactly how much I relate to Zoey, mainly ROTI Zoey and not All-Stars Zoey (the annoying godplayer), but that's what I'm most nervous about, because most people I know either love her because she's adorable, or hate her because she's bland. I'll wait for your opinion on the characters before I start giving mine, though. For all I know, you might have the same opinion as me.

I love Arnold he is great. Arnold is who we want to be and Helga is who we are. Also, he is the straight man and everyone else is nuts. The only characters I dislike are Sid and Oscar.Sid is an annoying bratty coward and Oscar I know he is a bum but he is more sad than funny.

12:03 I actually didn't figure that out until the creator said so in an interview.

For the record, Hey Arnold is my favorite Nickelodeon show for being so down to earth and relatable without being too cynical.

And also Rhonda Goes Broke, Principal Simmons, Biosquare, Longest Monday, Full Moon, Student Teacher, and Phoebe's Little Problem. (While I agree that Hey Arnold! is a fantastic show, it's a SHAME that it can have terrible episodes like these sometimes)

Not a bad Nicktoon to start with after Geraldine Leyborne's departure as president.

I enjoy your best of list! But I was hoping for a few more of the creepy urban legend episodes, and also Helga Blabs It All which I thought was the funniest episode of the whole series.
