My pop played this song on so many stages throughout my life. Parkinson’s has stolen his ability and will eventually take him from this world. This song brings me back to better times with my pop.
Thanks for such a great song! I just heard it for the first time earlier this year. My buddy and I are learning it now. I love your chord progression from Am D C G! Take care!
So you’re that guy. You’ve caused me enormous grief. I was on the road with a bluegrass band for decades and had to do this song over and over and over. Requested almost every night and it wasn’t even a song I’d recorded. But seriously you sure have quite the legacy if you’d never written anything else. That’s the sort of song that all songwriters dream of writing: a bonafide classic for all the ages. That song will be sung 200 years from now if civilization stands.
@@HazzardTony Thank you. And as a songwriter my own self I confess to being a bit star struck. Tom T was one of my best friends and paid you quite the compliment by recording this. As you know he recorded very few songs that he didn’t write. I do think, however, that the definitive bluegrass version (though not the first bluegrass version, which many do not realize) was the Country Gentlemen cut circa 1971. After Charlie Waller sang that song it stayed sung. Anyway I think I’m qualified to say that Rocky Top and Fox On the Run are the two most requested bluegrass songs ever. Take care and good to see you’re still around. I’ve heard your name forever it seems and never dreamed I’d communicate with you. My heroes have always been songwriters. Take care.
R.I.P. Tom T. Hall.. "Fox on the Run" is one of my all time favorite recordings of yours. I first heard of Tom T. through his guest appearances on the television show, 'Nashville Now'. I also recall that Tom T. did commercials for Tyson chicken. This was in the mid 1980s. I was born in the mid 1970s so I was still a child...when I'd see him on television I'd always wonder why he held his guitar in such a unique way. I have several CDs of his and a 1995 box set. Almost all of his songs are online so I rarely play the CDs anymore.
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mr. Hall in England when he did a USO show for us. What a great gentleman. He missed his flight because he wanted to shake everyones hand and give an autograph to anyone wanting it. Thank you posting this.....
Now if you know country, this is a classic. This is the definition of pure country. I can play this song for 24 hours, damn good SOLID country. And Tommy T can sing it..........
I love this song so much, it brings back the best memories, my dad used to always play this song for us in the car. He would sing it at the top of his lungs. :)
I had completely forgotten this song and then last night I was passing a business that had this playing on their radio and without thinking I was singing along.
+doughesson Yeah, I'm pretty new to country music. I never listened to it until about 1962. I never heard of Tom T. Hall except for about 1968 through 2016. I don't guess I ever heard him sing more than a coupla' hundred songs or so. I only have three of his LP albums. Yeah, I'm pretty new to country music.
I have trying to find song 🎵 ever since I heard on bluegrass country station in 1981 finally found it heard it on Willie's road house on xm radio 👍💖🙏✝️
The best at this is Charlie Waller and the Country Gentlemen. that being said, i never tire of hearing Mr. hall sing this. His album Magnificent Music Machine is some great music and great bluegrass. Tom T. started in bluegrass but said his voice was too low to sing lead. he has been a treasure of pleasure!!
Thank you for all your positive comments, especially Steven S and Lucy B: much appreciated. JasonL77, I wrote this song long before The Sweet's song. They copied the title and even the rising harmonies. By the way, someone told me that all the different versions of FOTR (my song, not Sweet's!) have been viewed 1.4 million times on UA-cam. I like the Zac Brown Band version, too.
The sweet song is good, but your song is better... Two different styles of song... I have 19 songs on you tube, and half have titles one one else has.. No small feat.. My most popular song is predivorce paranoia... Only good thing my first wife ever did for me...
Add me to the "I love this song group" makes me what to pick up my guitar again...fabulous song, you get another award from me...thank you Tony Hazzard.
Wow! What an honor to get a response to my video by you, Mr. Hazzard. This song is the most watched video of all 29 videos that I have uploaded on UA-cam. It speaks just how popular this song still is and it wouldn't be possible had you not written it many years ago. Congrats on the award for Tom T's version. Well deserved for such a great and well written song. ~Steven Spolar
What a beautiful, heartfelt version of this great tune. Just loved it! It really swung, great harmonies, and full of deep emotion. Don't think it's ever been (or can be) topped!
I've listened to Country music for as long as I remember. Although I am from western N.C. where Bluegrass music is prevalent, this is the song that got me interested in in that form of music at the age of 14, way back in 1976. Nobody does this song as well as Tom T. Hall and there are some great versions out there.
Thanks for posting with lyrics. Hard to pick a favorite Tom T. song he's got so many great ones, but thisun's up there. What a prolific story teller! I just noticed on Wikipedia he also wrote "Harper Valley PTA" AND Alan Jaxons "Itty Bitty." Wow! Long Live Tom T. Hall ! !
many years ago I had a couple friends who could play old country and bluegrass in school, one day we were outside and I asked if they knew this song they did they started picking and me and a couple guys sung it. ended up with a crowd. then we sung La Bamba and the Mexican guys moved up front and they were clapping the loudest. music can bring people together.
This song is timeless! Well written Mr Hazzard! I agree with Mr. Spolar. What an honor to have the man responsible for this song to take the time and comment. Dave Conger
Great song! Nice pic of him and the Statler Brothers @ 1:34. Wish they were still singing, but glad they are enjoying retirement, but Jimmy Fortune still performs. Thanks for the nice video and post Steven!
This is the first song I remember knowing the words to. Dad played guitar and sang this and had me do back vocals Me at 6 years old: “LIKE A FOOOOX LIKE A FOX ON THE RUUUUN” lol
I checked out ZBB version on your page, awesome! That is what needs to be played on todays country music, people are longing for the real deal, not the popified country we are being plastered with!
When I think of all the truly great country singers who have gone on, and then think of what we have left today. The ones that we have (and probably ever will have) will never make up for the ones we have lost. RIP Tom T.
I wish FM radio still had country music on it. Sad days
Fortunately, CD's (even if used off Amazon) endure!
My pop played this song on so many stages throughout my life. Parkinson’s has stolen his ability and will eventually take him from this world. This song brings me back to better times with my pop.
This version won me an award, for which many thanks.
cheers

I was blessed to have met Tom T.Hall twice in the seventies. He was such a deep and wise gentleman and so talented. I miss him. #RIP my friend.
He's like a country Bob Dylan. Great lyricist
My sister and I performed this song about 25 years ago at a place called the Lil ole Opry in SE Missouri 😅
So sad to learn of his passing today. This was my favorite Tom T. Hall song.
Rest in peace, Tom. You were a great singer and songwriter and all the stories you told in your songs will stand the test of time.

When he dabued here in the sixties in north Hollywood he created quiet a stir! RIP you and Dixie.
Tom and Marty robins both held their guitars that way!
So glad to grow up with this music
This is my favorite version of "Fox on the Run."
Personally, I like the fourth "Like a fo0Ox" haha--like how The Country Gentlemen do it. It just seems lacking with only three.
I was just in Nashville.. This song and bluegrass isn't in town. God speed to my father who recently passed and loved this song!!
RIP Tom T. noone was like you n never will be. ty Sir you are loved n not forgotten
Sure brings back some great times as a 6oung man!
lovely easy listening thanks, came here after listening to "end of the f**king world" soundtrack... Brilliant series well worth a watch too

It's actually a rock song Manfred Mann did it first.
This is so damn good I can't stand it. The lyrics in the chorus are magic. Brilliant.

Tom T comes in a close second to the Country Gentlemen...you just can't beat their harmonies and banjo.
Rip to one of the best country singers of all time
I’m sitting here tonight listening to every version of this song.
And pleasantly surprised that I like them all
The epitome of my love life....my first marriage...happened to me just like Tom sings about.😢
