- "I haven't eaten a bite or slept for three days and nights, that's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis" - Tom T. Hall. Complete lyrics below.
Vocals: Tom T. Hall
Words & Music: Tom T. Hall
Original Album: Ballad of Forty Dollars (Mercury Records - 1969)
Lyrics:
If you love somebody enough, you'll follow wherever they go
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
If you love somebody enough, you'll go where your heart wants to go
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
I know if you'd seen her, you'd tell me 'cause you are my friend
I've got to find her and find out the trouble she's in
If you tell me that she's not here, I'll follow the trail of her tears
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
She would get mad and she used to say, that she'd come back to Memphis someday
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
I haven't eaten a bite or slept for three days and nights
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
I've got to find her and tell her that I love her so
I'll never rest till I find out why she had to go
Thank you for your precious time, forgive me if I start to cryin'
That's how I got to Memphis, That's how I got to Memphis...
I was 5 years old ( 1973) when I met Tom, I was at A snack stand, Some kid took my chips & ate them, Tom bought me another bag & gave me A dollar bill he signed it for me, RIP Mr Hall 😢 I will never forget you.
sweet story
Seriously?
This man was a gift from God
I was sleeping on the ground beside the river next to the Manassas airport . Down on my luck and my wife left me when a car pulled up on the road beside the river and two men got out. They invited me to come to the airport and drink a beer with them. They were awaiting Tom T's flight to come in because they played in his band. I'll never forget that night. Helped me get on with my life.
Oldfinger Mullins. Pabst?
Hell, that's a country song in itself! T would love that, I hope they told him.
WOW!!!!
Anything really!
So, David, just how did you get the Memphis?
RIP to the greatest storyteller in music history. Tom sang the song like he was having a conversation with you. It was personal and emotional. There’ll never be another.
That's how the greats deliver a song; like they are talking to you - Willie does this. Johnny also. In many ways Frank (Chairman of the Board) as well.
@Joe, this comment is spot on. I am trying to figure out why I feel so down when a person I never met in a generation before my own has passed. I really enjoyed Tom T Hall’s music and song writing.
the best of them all.
Lemme put it in caps GREATEST STORY TELLER IN MUSIC HISTORY
A timeless song 🎵! My musician friend Ericson Holt from 2 Friends in Keywest sings this song in tribute to TTH!! RIP 🙏
I had the pleasure of meeting Tom T. Hall many years ago in Phoenix when he was in town for a concert. We met on a bench in a shopping mall - I was waiting for my then-wife to get off work, and he was waiting while Dixie did some shopping. Even back then he was one of my favorite artists. It was a brief meeting, we chatted idly for a few minutes, then he was on his way. He was such an unassuming, down to earth person. This is one of the greatest songs by one of the greatest singer / songwriters ever. RIP, Tom.
The first time I "met" Tom T. Hall was in 1981 when my Mom and Dad took me to a taping of "Pop Goes the Country" and he invited the audience to come up after the show to take pictures and shake hands. Many years later, after I'd become a studio musician, I officially met him in a recording studio in Nashville. I joked with him about how miserable I was as a 10-year-old who didn't understand that it took about three hours to film a 30-minute music television show. He offered me a cigarette, and I took it (even though I'd never smoked). I then told him that my Dad would sing the chorus of "I Like Beer" practically every time he'd pop a top on a Falls City or PBR. He got a big chuckle out of that. Six years ago, my wife and I officially gave up on Nashville and moved - precisely 5 miles from the Alabama state line - to Lincoln County, TN. I know she gets gets tired of hearing me sing "Country Is" almost every time we go out to sit on the porch ... but she's never said it! RIP Tom T. Hall. 16th and 17th Avenues need a lot more like you these days, indeed.
When I heard of TOMS passing.Nobody ever knew it but I went out in the woods and I cried.
The was another good one by this fine gentleman.
@@debraarnold3703 Glad you caught onto that. 🙂
Clayton Delaney.
I did 2
My father could sing and play. "The Day That Clayton Delaney Died" was one of his favorites.
My love for the Newsroom, that's how I got to Memphis.
Funny that. I have always loved this song, and it has been covered by many many artists. That having beed said, the rendition on the Newsroom is one of, if not the best one, and I find that quite shocking.
Damn it hurts. That show die too soon.
Same here. Like Greg, I think The Newsroom" was (boo hoo) the best show on TV. Aaron Sorkin is a great screenwriter. The characters felt like family and how they are all gone.

This was my song for my baby. I returned from Philly because I loved so much. But she died of a heroin overdose. I miss her so much much. She was so gorgeous

Hello! How are you doing today, please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you’re a fan ? Have a great day… Stay Safe!
I am a child of the 60s and where I come from we did not divide our music into types. This is just a great song which I can play on my guitar....
Those who are listening to this song are Ultra legend.....
I cried when Will McAvoy played this song. Will miss you guys.
me 2 mate :(
One in Chile too. So unfair.
I cried too, oh my god.
i tried very hard not to....😢
(hands you a tissue box)here
Country today owes a debt to artists like Tom T .. this is country gold
🤤🤤🤤😴
Doubt most on the radio today have heard this
Charley Crockett Keeping good songs like this alive!
More like they owe him an apology. Modern Country radio is party-bro rock.
Him and The Statler Brothers.
So sad to learn of his passing. We're losing all the greats from the "old" days. R.I.P. Tom. 💔💔
Yea true, wasn't so along go we lost another legend in Charley pride.
I’m 59. My music heroes are pretty much all gone. I always take the day off for Buddy Holly,Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper. Music now really sucks for the most part. Keep the legends alive!
Another great loss to Country Music and Blue Grass. We will miss you Tom, God's Speed.
I will put up this guy's writing to Dylan and Cohen any day of the week!
The End Of The F***ing World got me here thanks to it's unique soundtrack. I have this song stuck in my head.
Me too....and I have always listened to his song Old dogs, children, and watermelon wine....but this is another good song by Tom T. HALL
"I've seen you skating. You're pretty sh*t."
A French popular singer dead this year sang it in french i never knew that this song was english before having see The End of Fu. World
Brings tears
@@corent1673 same here. I had to look it up to double check.
I am 62 years old my uncle George love Tom t ❤ I miss my uncle George
this is one of the greatest country songs ever written 5 stars.....
One of the greatest in Tom T. Hall. Rest in peace.
Written by Bobby Bare. It's said that they traded each other a song a piece.
Now this is Country not like the crap Nashville is putting out today.
Tom was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky and I'm many years younger from Western Kentucky but I tell ya what, he's a songwriter, poet, storyteller, and he is cherished here as he should be everywhere. God bless him and his family 👃👍
In my humble opinion one of the storyteller's best tunes ever. The legend has it that he was stopping by Faron Young's office to drop off some songs to pitch one day, and this was one of them. It was there that day that he first laid eyes on Miss Dixie Deen, Faron's secretary. They began dating and by 68 they were married. Miss Dixie passed away in 2015 and Tom T was never the same, and he withdrew from the public eye. Due to medical issues and severe bouts of depression, he took his life in 2021. A very sad sad day for the Country Music world indeed. He was 85.
One of our best songwriters in any genre
I grew listening to Tom T Hall and then I got too cool for my parents' music. Funny how some 40 years later, I play that music and love it. There isn't a Tom T Hall song that doesn't remind me of my childhood and youth and the good times then. Thank you for that sir, and RIP
We could use more like ole Tom T. nowadays. He made me look forward to listening to the radio back in the day but now you can’t even tell what they are saying, not that I ever listen to the junk.
I'd miss the Newsroom. Thank you Will McAvoy. Thank you Charlie. You were a man.
a great big man.
Musically speaking, Tom's greatest song hands down.
Good era for sure
100% Factual. But lame ass UA-cam put a commercial in the middle of it.
Hmmmm, Tom wrote some good ones. The Chicago Story, Turn it onTurn it on, Turn it on, Little Bitty, it goes on and on. I like The Memphis song, but ol' T wrote some good ones.
Tom T Hall has written SO many great songs, this one is among his very best songs written and sung by him. Id say in the top 10 at least
Another one .. Ravishing Ruby.
To be honest I feel that way about many of his songs.Cheers from Canada!
RIP Tom. As I kid I lived in Memphis and this always makes me think of my time there. I even got to see Elvis with Priscilla on the back of a motorcycle. That was "skinny Elvis" days. No telling how many people recorded this song.
I first heard this from Charley Crockett, now I'm checking out the original. They're different but both good in their own ways. This kind of music never gets old!
I grew up a city kid and knew nothing about country music until I got my first DJ job in radio at a country station. I played random records by unknown singers. One night, this one singer caught my attention. "Hey, this guy's got something to say." I was hooked on Tom T. Hall. A few years later, I got to meet and interview him on his tour bus. His song, "Deal" had just come out. Your stories will live on, Tom. I will miss you. We all will miss you. As part of life, it's something we have to deal with. R.I.P.
RIP Tom. Thanks for all the music!
My dad introduced me to Tom t hall.thanks dad.miss you.
....me too brother
True country. As a Memphian this is one of our city's best song.
Spot on Martha, RAY TWELVE STRINGS U.K
Country music hits different after a breakup. Beautiful song. I first heard it 20 years ago. 5 years ago I moved to Memphis and met my ex of 4 years there. She moved there for me. Loved our time there and made a lot of memories. We'd smile and sing along with this song. We moved together elsewhere after living there about a year. 3 years later she left me for somebody else. I wonder if we stayed if things would have been different. I think about going back myself, but I'm just not sure anymore. Some part of me wishes we'd meet again in Memphis and start over one day. But the damage is done. This song just hurts so much. And she will never see this. "Forgive me if I start to cryin'..."
Your good big dog , sometimes our story is our story
@@b4e279 Thank you for this, kind stranger

Exactly Thanks Tom T Hall the best story teller of all
All hail, what a great song...
Tom T. The great American poet. His songs are timeless
Rest easy, Tom T. Thanks for the great work you left behind.
The Newsroom brought me here. Not a country fan, but this is a great song! Thank you, Charlie :)
+Gdsm9 I Agree!
+Gdsm9 second that ...
+Gdsm9 100% agree. Wish the Newsroom crew would release their version on iTunes
Try Karl Blaus cover of it, He adds a nice slightly less of a country vibe to it and it works really well
It appears you might be a fan of country, if you like this song. Delve a little deeper and you might find some songs of this same ilk that you like.
RIP. It's said day in music.
Newsroom brought me here!!
Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom" definitely brought me here.
Aaron sorkin ❤️

Tom T. Hall, the poet laureate of America's soul
Sitting here at a house party with my main man Omar... in Berlin Germany. An American and a Jew trapped in a foreign country. Lots of love for y’all and the music of course.
It was never a song, it was a story, a chat, with an old friend.
BEASTMODE BABY!!!!
Rest in peace, and thank you for the music, from an old Los Angeles hippy..
Back when music was music. So glad I got a chance to grow up in this era of the best music generation ever. RIP Mr. Hall another one of the all time greats. Thanks for the great music.
you prob hate anything made on a computer huh
BG
Tech is okay. But the point is a lot of culture and class has gone down hill and the Us has degraded in many ways. Look at San Francisco and other tech areas with billionaires and people defecating on public roads. We’re now the most indebted nation to ever exist with 150 tribes in unfunded liabilities with social security running out by 2035.
Cheap money, cheap products etc has changed the culture. The cost of capital influences behavior.
There’s some good country singers like Aaron Watson, and then ya got country with rap in it. Sure computers and somethings have improved, but that doesn’t mean the human condition overall has improved. Young people get the same dopamine hit like you’d get from cocaine or porn by using social media. Its interesting how the bad side of tech is Not discussed.
@@easysteezy58 Like everything made on a computer is good?
Best of the best ,god bless you Tom🎉.
Just discovered this gem, sublime masterpiece 😮
The other night I heard Solomon Burke sing this song and it has been playing in my head all day long and it is a tear jerker! Blues of life🥹
I was driving in my car the other day and this song came on from spotify shuffle. Something about the simple yet poetic lyrics and that baritone Nashville country voice really moved me. Great fuggin song.
Nowadays they would call this "stalking", but in this context how can what the subject is doing be wrong? His 💔 is broken and he only wants to know what went wrong. One of the greatest story songs of all time, and it feels so real that you'd almost cry. This is what true love can drive a man to. RIP Tom Hall, you were one class act.
It was a different time, a better time. Not a perfect one, but better than whatever we have today.
Tom, you are missed........
What a beautiful song. May he rest in peace. From Ireland 🇮🇪.
What a great song. One of my all time favorites.
I was a big fan of his from 1974-1979, my teen years. I thought he was cute and his voice sexy. Used to see him on Hee Haw. I had several of his Lps, and loved this song, and Country Is.
One of great broken heart songs. I’m glad I’m not the only one who got their heartbroken.
Watching Newsroom I heard this beautiful music for my very first time. I´d known some of the casting before this film and I liked them. I´m gonna miss the series. But that´s why I´ll go to Memphis on my next time in USA, from my Brazil...
Listening to this beautiful song crying my heart out & thinking about my beloved wife who I lost to cancer a long time ago 😭
hope to visit Memphis one day, I am Saudi but I love American culture, and this song made me wish to visit America
Reading through some of the comments, it amazes me how many people connect with Tom's music. Heck, guys I was all of 7 yrs old when Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and a lot more came over my dad's console stereo on a Friday or Saturday night. That era is timeless and speaks volumes to generations but interestingly enough, it skips a couple and then it's hot again. I have many memories and the music playing meant good times and peace in our house. Enjoy, everyone and God bless.
One of my favorite songs of all time
This song & Tom T Hall didn't need some Newsroom episode to make this song Great. It has been around for years & just gets better with time.Such a real country gem of a song & Tom T was one of the true Greats of that era it came out in.
I love this man and his stories. He will be surely missed.
@@gregnormal5101 ciao amico!🙋😍😘🍀
You know I grown up where Tom did. I traveled a lot of the same roads that he did when he was young. A lot of the songs he sing was part of his life he lived. He lived the songs he sing. One of the greatest of all time
thanks Will McAvoy
At 59 years old,I only discovered this song about 4 months ago. Love it,and don't know how it was ever missed in my country music upbringing. Know every other song he he ever did.
What a masterpiece. Just so simple and direct and full of real human feeling. I know this great writer penned a number of wonderful songs but I sometimes ask myself if this one wasn't his absolute best. Don't want to insist on that. Just find it so moving in its utter simplicity.
So true, the very first time I heard this song 🎵 Gatos
Soul, Blues, and vintage originals, nothing beats a good story, these country folks can always paint pictures in the mind, melancholy of wisdom.
Something even we can follow when things get unbearable we can prompt a act of faith, that if we can keep going we can capture these words into our own world, from a vision and dream into reality.
Thanks old timer.
RIP to the greatest storyteller in country music history 😭😭😭🤠🤠🌵
I think that is Marty Robbins. His 3 songs about El Paso are by far the best country storytelling songs ever.
Just one of the many down to earth classics by Tom T Hall. Love his style 😉👍😉
R.I.P. Sir, You brought joy to so many people, Thank You!

One of my favorites by Tom, Rest in Piece

Wow, quedé totalmente sorprendida 😲 con la hermosa canción de este cantante norteamericano TOM T HALL, es realmente maravillosa su música 🎶 country
Viva Tom T. Hall 🎶 🎸
To Dan, who doesn't understand why that song was used in the last episode... Did you miss Charlie's conversation with Will, in a flashback to a scene with them after a newscast discussing it, then mentions his grandson who is a music savant? Charlie had been listening to that song when Will came in and mentioned he didn't know Charlie liked country music. Charlie said that was his grandson's favorite and referred to his garage band.
I think it was very fitting that Will, who was trying to step up for Charlie with his grandkids, sings this song at that point. He was bonding, something he looked forward to doing with his own child.
I agreed with what you wrote and I want to add my other point-
when Charlie spoke to will at this scene, he mentioned Memphis as a symbol of a place the heart is at.
I felt like it was a different version of Rabbi Nachman of Breslaw who said that a person is where his thoughts are.
have a feeling that the message of all this was some what a summary to all the series in which they followed their idealistic and personal dreams, wherever they went and wherever they took them and at the finale it's like a road sign for the rest of their journey as ACN Newsroom family.
hope that I was clear enough....
:-)
Tom T.Hall was the one that helped one of my favorites Alan Jackson get recognized in Nashville! I appreciate you Tom RIP !
My first record I bought! When Clayton Delaney died!
