  • "Well the doctors say they do not know what saved the man from death, but in a few days he put on his overalls and left" - Tom T. Hall. Complete lyrics below.
    Vocals: Tom T. Hall
Words & Music: Tom T. Hall
Original Album: In Search of a Song (Mercury Records - 1971)
    Lyrics:
I met him in a hospital about a year ago
And why I still remember him I guess I'll never know
He'd lie there and cry out in a medicated fog
Here I am in this dang bed and who's gonna feed them hogs?
Four hundred hogs they're just standing out there
My wife can't feed them and my neighbors don't care
They can't get out and roam around like my old huntin' dogs
Here I am in this dang bed and who's gonna feed them hogs?
His face was lean and his hands were rough
His way was hogs and his nature was tough
His doctors tried to tell him that he may not live at all
But all he ever talked about was who's gonna feed them hogs?
Four hundred hogs they're just standing out there
My wife can't feed them and my neighbors don't care
They can't get out and roam around like my old huntin' dogs
Here I am in this dang bed and who's gonna feed them hogs?
    -- Instrumental --
Four hundred hogs comes to eight hundred hams
And that's a lotta money for a hog raising man
Four hundred hogs comes to sixteen hundred feet
The market's up and there are people a waitin' on that meat.
Well the doctors say they do not know what saved the man from death
But in a few days he put on his overalls and he left
That's all there is to this small song but waitress 'fore you leave
Would you bring me some coffee and a hot ham sandwich please?
Four hundred hogs they're just standing out there
His wife couldn't feed them and his neighbors didn't care
They couldn't get out and roam around like his old huntin' dogs
There he was in that dang bed and who's gonna feed them hogs?

This song is based is upon a true story. While Tom T. Hall was visiting a friend in the hospital, he heard the commotion of the medical staff in a nearby room and asked his friend about it. His friend told Mr. Hall that a farmer, who was badly injured in a tractor accident, was the patient in that room and that he may not survive. A few days later Mr. Hall returned to the hospital for a visit and the farmers room was empty. Tom asked if he had passed, but his friend said he got dressed and left.

So what? You should do a youtube video on the history of the song, and comoare hits ro duscourse in the song, in relation to the actual song. When your song comes on, you turn it down, and talk about it, without hearing it. But yiu only di that when its playing. But i can talk about it, and not gas

I remember Tom T Hall actually telling this story just the way you told it.
It seems like I heard him tell this story back in the 80s on Ralph Emery's Nashville Tonight show on the old TNN Network.
      Much love from Mobile Alabama.

This just brings back the best memories of me & my dad back in the 70s when I was a boy & we lived in Gordon Alabama...about 20 miles south of Dothan Alabama.
    My dad had a 1972 Chevy LWB C-10...307 v8...white...no a/c...no p/s...3spd on the column & an 8-track player.
We used to ride on old country back roads in Houston Co. Alabama & my dad would always play Tom T Hall.
My dad used to say Tom T Hall was the best country music singer ever. This was one of the many songs we used to listen to by Tom T Hall.
I love this GOLDEN COUNTRY MUSIC now and always have.
I still listen to Tom T Hall often on my MP3 player.
My dad died New Years Eve 2015. I sure miss him...but these are sweet sweet memories that I will cherish for life.
    Much love from Mobile Alabama.

My brother, who, by the way, was an Orthodox Jewish music lover, was sick and felt his strength ebbing. He told me he thought he would die, and then got up and played this song for me. Such was his sense of humor. Unfortunately, his feeling was right and he passed away a year ago. So I played this song again today.

I think an incident like this would be moderately memorable to the average person, but you've got to try and put yourself in the shoes of someone that traveled the world with more than 200 concert dates a year. Combine that with the thousands of people he met every year. I know that if it were me, I'd be lucky just to remember the words to all of his story songs, Never mind all the people and incidents that we hear about in a Tom T. Hall song. Tom T. made it all look easy - a genius in disguise.

Kinda sounds like my old man. Except we have cattle. He's had three heart surgeries, cancer, had a few joints replaced, and broke his back and neck when he fell off the barn roof. The doctors never thought he would be able to get out and do chores ever again. He did. Four days after breaking his back and neck, he walked out of the hospital. He always knew that me and my brother would take care of the farm, even while we were in school.

Our favorite is "The Little Lady Preacher" because Tom refers to a sinner
in the song by the name of "Luther Short", which just happened to be the
name of my 2 son's 4th grade teacher. Of course when the song would
come on and talk about Luther being a "hairy-legged soul lost out in sin",
gales of laughter would take over the room.
Having been a farmer I know about hogs, and its a fact that if they're
used to being fed, (as opposed to rooting around in the woods finding
their own food), they'll stand right there until they drop over from star-
    vation.

"...Why I still remember him I guess I'll never know" strikes me as an odd line for someone who seemed quite memorable if he truly existed. How many people like that would one truly forget?
