I honestly think everybody was well casted in this one. I would not think of anybody but Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyle and Robin Williams makes a really good Popeye
@Darkkefka That's true and probably if he ate the spinach much earlier in the movie, then Bluto would have turned yellow earlier and ran away out of fear just like he turned yellow here and swam away out of fear being unknown if he ever came back for revenge (even though a second film was never made).
@@jasongoldman3850 Bluto didn't realize he was helping Popeye.. All he knew at the time was the Popeye hated spinach; he didn't know that it gave him great strength-- until it was too late, of course.. (and I don't think Popeye knew either, until it did)

Bruce is the name of the Shark Prop in Jaws.
I love the fact that this was how he came to love spinach-when Bluto force fed it to him and he realized it gave him strength to beat Bluto and save Olive.
@andreskatespinosa1935 That depends on if Popeye ever came back to that ocean for that octopus to gain revenge. However, I would guess that, that octopus died after getting a super powerful punch from Popeye. Or maybe when Popeye punched it, maybe it landed on top on dry land or on top of that rock at 1:13 and if it stayed on dry land or on top of the rock at 1:13 for a long time, it would have died not being in the water for a long time. So if it died, it wouldn't be able to get revenge on Popeye. For Bluto, hopefully he swam away from Sweethaven and never came back for revenge on Popeye seeing him cowardly turning yellow and swimming away.
It would have been amazing if they made a second film titled "Popeye 2: The Revenge Of Bluto" where after Bluto turned yellow and swam away out of fear, he returns back to Sweethaven to get revenge on Popeye along with a few henchmen where I guess all Popeye would have to do is always keep a can of spinach with him.
apparently popeyes song is so catchy even the skeleton is joining in, and when i was a little boy the thing to watch on tv was mork and mindy, so me one christmas discovering this film was no doubt one of the best christmas`s ever, and it probably only took one film starring robin williams, and i was a fan for life.
It's amazing how that Popeye's first favorite vegetable was carrots seen in the beginning of the movie and now I guess it's Spinach and I guess his new brother-in-law Wimpy (that is, if Popeye and Olive got married) should learn to eat more Spinach in life for protein and get strength like Popeye since it seems like Wimpy only likes to eat hamburgers.
@@1987AnimeBoy Somehow I thought there was some relation Wimpy had with the Oyls when I watched the movie but, maybe not. I will have to watch the movie again.
They based too much of this on the Thimble Theater comic strip that NOBODY who as a kid in the 1960's-70's was fimiliar with. What they knew was the Fleischer / Famous studio cartoons from Paramount. I saw it's theater release when I was 12 and hated it. The notion that Popeye hated spinach and had to have it forced on him to eat was bizarre. If I could remake a live action the first order of the day is to recapture the Fleischer Studio (1933-1942) feel. It would take place in the 1930's, it would have the slapstick and humor to match the suspence of whatever predicamink Popeye would be in. Bluto would be a villian you rooted against with all your might, but still liked. Take some artistic liberty from the past. Start it right off with Olive sleepwalking (again) 600 feet high on the girders of the Empire State Building under construction, rescue her and then on to the bisnisk of the day. Maybe Popeye worked on the Empire construction site but the other workers got him fired for making them look bad by heating rivets with his pipe and putting them in with his fist. A job offer, set out to sea to a far off island for riches and treasure (after all it's the Depression and the rent is due). Maybe put the Goons in there and the characters that people KNEW (sorry Castor, Coal, and Geezil). Yeah, something like that.
I think Ray Walston should have sounded more like Poopdeck Pappy in the cartoons, but on other hand if he did audiences might not have taken him too seriously.
Since Popeye said he hates Spinach at 0:04, I guess he now loves Spinach more than carrots since in the beginning of the movie, he said to the vegetable stand guy that he (Popeye) wants to buy a lot of carrots for vitamins but now is a more Spinach fan than a carrot fan. The only thing I was confused about is that, how does Popeye say he hates Spinach if he never tried it? Unless he didn't like the taste but is more interested in eating it now (not caring about the taste) since it made him strong to kill the octopus and injure Bluto to turn him yellow and scare him away.
It would be a lot better if Popeye beat the living crap out of Bluto a lot more like he did with the giant octopus. Bluto deserves a harsh consequence.
@chrisbarone515 That's true. However, Olive almost suffocated so he (Popeye) had to save her from the octopus and maybe Popeye was going to fight Bluto next but he swam away out of fear and turned yellow.
If Paramount Animation, Nickelodeon Movies, and King Features Syndicate decide to let the upcoming full-length computer animated version of Popeye go into production, this is what the cast of characters will look like: Zach Braff as Popeye Isla Fisher as Olive Oyl Jack Black as Bluto Tony Hale as J. Can't we all agree that Robin Williams played the best Popeye and Shelly Duvall played the best Olive Oyl?
Yes, and yes, respectively. And Paul L. Smith was the greatest Bluto.
Absolutely!
They were the only two on this planet that could bring such characters to life.
Outside of the cartoons who else have ever played those characters in a live-action movie or TV show?
