  • Popeye the Sailor Man - that gruff, pipe-smoking, spinach-loving cartoon hero has been entertaining audiences for nearly a century. With his bulging forearms and a mean uppercut, Popeye never backed down from a fight, especially when his beloved Olive Oyl was in trouble.
But there was always one thing that gave Popeye his incredible strength - a can of spinach. Whenever Popeye needed to save the day, he'd pop open a can, slurp down the green stuff, and BAM! His muscles would bulge and he'd be ready to take on any foe.
So why spinach? What was it about this leafy green vegetable that made it Popeye's go-to power food? The answer lies in a simple mathematical error made nearly 150 years ago.

If Popeye could sqeeze open a can of spinach - or a can of anything, for that matter - I'd say he's pretty strong anyways.

Popeye was a good role model for children, then along came his evil counter-part, the cookie monster

Popeye should be updated to eat a bag of spinach instead of the terrible canned stuff.

Popeye is one of two things that got me intrusted in the navy and there involvement in ww2, which birthed my love for history, also I’m a picky eater but popeye got me brave enough to try a peice, but before that when I was in a private high school ( for kids with autism) I had a favorite teacher assistant named Mr. Marco, and I would bring my Dixie cup hat (the hat the sailors wore) (also I’m not in the navy, nor am I trying to do stolen valor, I respect our military men and women who served and are currently serving, also I only had the hat) and after school when going home I would take it out of my locker and lay it beside me. Well after Mr. Marco seeing this repeatedly he gave me the nickname popeye the sailor man, he even gave me two popeye the sailor ties, and I still wear and use that nickname with pride) (also I didn’t always bring the hat to school and this was before I got a U.S. navy ball cap and wore that.

There's a much simpler reason....and it is actually the truth.
The actual man that Popeye was based on told the children lots of stories about his heroic deeds and his strength....since he broke up brawls in bars he was probably a good fighter too. When he told the children to eat their spinach so they could grow as strong as he was, they believed him!! Maybe he told them that because he heard about how much iron spinach possibly had in it, but we don't know that. Simple reason is The Man that Popeye was based on told the kids to eat spinach....

Popeye is quite an interesting character and one if not the most influential fictional character in media. He's a precursor to Mario. Aside from their similarities in taking food items as power-ups, the original Donkey Kong arcade was supposed to be a Popeye game.
I love Popeye for the entirety of my life. Still, I wouldn't eat a spinach or any veggies right out of the can. Only Popeye can grow stronger from doing that.

Of all the troubles a missed period has caused, I'd consider this to be the least. 🤣🤣🤣
