- Sweethaven taken from the movie Popeye made in 1980 starring: Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. I have all the songs from the movie on my videos, so just look and please subscribe or comment to me.
Lyrics:
Sweet Sweethaven
God must love us
We the people
Love Sweethaven
Hurray hurray Sweethaven
Flags are wavin'
Swept people from the sea
Safe from democracy
Sweeter than a melon tree
Put here for you and me
Sweethaven
Sweet Sweethaven
God must love us
We the people
Of Sweethaven
God must have landed here
Why else would he strand us here
Where the air is nice and clear
Sweethaven even sounds so near
To Heaven
God will always bless Sweethaven
God will always bless Sweethaven
God will always bless Sweethaven

4 dislikes?
$200 negativity tax.
Each.
They owe us an apology!
POOEY ON THE TAXMAN!
Haha!!
Probably offended by anything with God mentioned in it.
Plus interest.
I'm 39........to this day
Everytime I pass "New Haven" Connecticut I sing this song and NOBODY has NO IDEA what I'm doing.
MADMAN!
They all get a $10 oblivious tax.
@@superbrownbrown lol
I LOVE the song too. I play it almost every day. It's a national anthem, of sorts, for our unaccountably good "Sweethaven" lives and lifestyle, that has an underlying tone coming from a people who KNOW better than to be "fat, dumb and happy" complacent, but cannot help but be so . . . waiting for the always unpleasant end of such unaccountable bliss, imho.
Such an underrated movie......brilliant!
This was one of my dad's favorite movies. He looked a lot like Bluto but had the personality of Popeye. Everytime I watch this; I remember his laugh. RIP Robin and dad.
RIP to both him and your dad man,I hope your ok(and I hope your dad had a good life in heaven). I know what it's like to have a loved one who passed away, god bless you
I dunno why I keep hearing people didn't like the movie. It loved it when I was a kid.
@@The_Gallowglass I don't know either but I still love this movie
@@AmeliaBerdel-xv3wp I think some people forgot...it's Popeye. It's a cartoon made into a movie. Don't take it too seriously. Take it for what it is.
@@The_Gallowglass exactly 😂,like it's just a movie based on a cartoon; in fact I found some elements in this movie that was a reference to the comic strip
Another movie the critics didn't get.
You damm right
AMEN
Didn't Siskel and Ebert give it two thumbs up?
NEVER trust movie critics. They're mostly wrong.
@@Campbellzilla Yes They Certainly Did. And Bless them for it before they passed on.
Whenever I start to feel old I watch this movie intro and I feel young again.
For the longest time untill I saw this video like 8 years ago or so I thought this was maybe just a dream I had :> I remember seeing this as a kid :>
Such a great movie, way ahead of its time - that's why it didn't do well at the box office. Great catchy tunes and Robin Williams steals the show !!
It made a respectable profit, but it wasn't enough to satisfy the studio. That's why they call it a flop.
$60m for the time was excellent. However, the studio released the movie believing it could duplicate the profits from Annie, which made $130m. In comparison, the studio probably believed Popeye failed in comparison.
Yeah but its off the charts now , and the big box office movies make alot and in two months on Netflix and then a year later in a pawn shop no one wants..meanwhile..movies like Popeye this movie you will never find in a pawnshop or dollar store..never.
The movie didn't do well at the box office because nobody wants to see Popeye, a cartoon, converted to live form. Not even Robin Williams could save it. It proved that no cartoon translates well to the big screen. It's like very rare for it to work. Something like Popeye especially is doomed to fail especially with how literally they tried to translate it.
The only thing that redeemed the movie are some songs. Other songs are just laughably bad. That it got 3.5 stars from Roger Ebert is an absolute mystery to me. The box office is the real litmus test for this dumpster fire of a movie.
agree
This song has been stuck in my head for 30 years.
Same!!!
2024 Yes
Proud to say that I love this movie and the lack of critical aclaim and box office success is nothing but PHOOEY AND DOUBLE PHOOEY.
Saw this in the theater when I was 5. Loved it then. Still love it!
Picked this up at Walmart the other day for $5.. One of my all-time favorite movies as a kid growing up. My 7-yo daughter loves it now too.
And just like that she is 19
Guess your daughter had a cool dad just like you(😊),I hope you and your daughter are having a great life.
This film is s massive part of my childhood ❤ Popeye in general was one of the cartoons where I would disappear in my play world as a kid with him there 😊
This movie has a special place in my heart, being as it one of my fav childhood movies. I was 2 when this movie came out, but first watched it at 7 I think and on up until now. I've watched it like 4 times this past week.
same, though I was 6 when it came out and saw it....man I love it, though for years wasn't sure if I had imagined it :> seemed to disapear for a while.
Saw this in 1980 as a kid and loved it ever since it’s one of my favorite movies.❤️❤️ RIP Robin Williams we miss you 😘
According to a book about the movie, Nillson was stuck for one last song, the anthem, when he heard the Maltese army band playing their national anthem. He liked it and put words to it and thats how Sweethaven came to be.
I was born in 1976, saw this when i was 4. its in my top ten of all times.
I remember seeing this movie in the theater in 1980 when I was 9 years old. I'll always remember this opening scene and the Sweethaven song.
This was released the day before my 4th birthday. I remember going for pizza and then going to watch this in the theater. I loved it, and I know the songs by heart,
I was there today. A dream come true. Visit Malta
That'll be one dollar comment tax
*knocks you down a chute into the ocean* POOEY ON THE TAXMAN!!!

🤣😩🤣 Down with the tax man!🤣
thats a great movie isn't it?My favorite part was when popeye said what do u want me to name him...BABY OIL?what was ur favorite part
@@k.toddpierce987 I always liked the literal seeing-red part, in the fight between Bluto and Popeye.
I remember my mother taking me to see this movie when I was 6.
A MASTERPIECE of a movie! 💎💎💎💎💎
...i always wished Sweethaven was real...would've been a cool place to visit...
Byg Syxx You can! Its still there in Malta!
It is
Yes, Sweethaven is really a place in Malta island, I just visited it a week ago and it stayed in my heart even more than just after watching the movie! Google Popeye Village Malta, it's such a beautiful and spiritual place!
My mom took me to see this when it came out. I think l was 6. She hated it but l loved it 💗
They don’t make gems like this anymore. Masterful!❤️
I have carried this movie with me for nearly 40 years. Of all the movies I've watched over the years, including my all time favorite--Lord of the Rings--I've still watched Popeye more than any other movie.
Thank you Mr. Williams. Your performance was...is...and will always be phenomenal.
"God will always bless Sweethaven!"
I alway's thought this movie was underated. Great performance, awsome music and song writing. Plus a fav of mine as a child.
This movie is pure genius - it kept true to the origins and style of Popye. have to love the comical characters, like the mayor giving his speach to no one, the man chasing his hat, ect. all the characters are cartoonish yet very human. plus a wonderful score. its a shame Robin Williams doesnt like this movie, one one of his great roles
I saw the movie in 1981 and liked this song, but never knew the lyrics until 2014, thanks to the Internet.
Sweethaven reminds me of our little town of San Pedro, CA (the Port of Los Angeles). I love this movie! It's my favorite Robin Williams movie. Took my 3 children to see it around 1979
A totally great but forgotten Disney movie..and such a great warming start to a film.
When I was a kid a knew that this movie was going to be good because of the intro song "Sweethaven" and I'm still listening to it till this very day
Love this movie....and the music is so beautiful...underrated masterpiece...how do you take one of the greatest comic cartoons and bring it to life...and yes...make it work!
Underrated movie. I have always liked this one.
Awesome song & movie.
I’ll never forget constantly watching this movie on a CD when I was 6. I’m now almost 19 and still love this movie. RIP Robin Williams.
It doesn’t move fast but it stays with you. I catch it when it comes around. Harry Nilsson is a genius 💚💚💚
Up early... still loving this song..from forever ago & two weeks. So much Joy!
Harry Nilsson's brilliance was totally unappreciated.
Thank You Harry Nilsson!!! for you we wouldn't have sweet🎼sweethaven!!🎶🎵
Big Pops Segovia finally someone giving Nilsson some love
Robin Williams Got The Popeye Role.
you will be missed RIP Robin William you will always be in our hearts for ever.
When I was a kid and I was watching TV, and the TV guide just said Popeye... I had no idea there was a popeye movie but I loved the movie from this song on. It has been stuck in my head since I was a kid.
I loved this song and the movie
My favorite since I first saw it.
Gotta rewatch at least once a year.
Went to see the movie set in Malta recently. It’s very pretty.
"God must have landed here. Why else would he strand us here?"
😅That part always got me
I have loved this song since I was a little kid.
First movie I ever saw on cable, circa 1982 hbo
Driving through South Haven (Michigan) I changed the lyrics in this to 'South Haven'. The other people in the car thought I was making it up on the spot, and that I was a musical genius. And a lunatic.
LOL! Did you fess up?
@@musicaltheatergeek79 Immediately! I have no poker face.
One of my favourite underated childhood movies!
Yesterday when I was at work I was talking to a family who have been binging Robin Williams movies. I suggested Popeye and they didn't know there was a Popeye movie. Shown them this clip and they said they'd check it out.
Saw this as a kid and now my daughter who is 2 years old asks every morning to watch papa
A true classic. I grew up watching reruns on KTLA channel 5 for the Family Film Festival hosted by the late Tom Hatten. He was a legend and Popeye’s number 1 fan. I miss that childhood. The story, the movie, the cast; perfect!
carttoon come to life. love how popeye comes into town in his row boat lookin strong as hell with those big forearms.
Despite Williams manic depressive performance, the music shines as a gem of an unworldly splendor.
Haven't seen this in years. Love the opening
This film makes me cry after the death of robin williams
Me too I miss him so much omg
I put it off for yrs i still can't believe he's gone 😢
This movie was the second of a double feature (along with the first Indiana Jones). First movies I saw in a theatre. It's too bad this movie didn't do as well as it should have done. A lot of thought went into this. Even my late Dad said they did a good job and he didn't compliment movies very often.
And, yes, makes me miss Robin Williams even more. I was shattered when I heard he took his own life. He was an inspiration to me. He had a unique ability to make people laugh. One of the funniest people to ever live. When Spielberg was in Europe filming Schinder's List, he would get so depressed filming that every day. He would call his friend Robin Williams in the States and Robin would get him laughing.
I think of this song every time the sun comes out on a rainy day
This movie RULES !!!!!!!! they don't make em like this anymore ,,
My aunt used to have this recorded on a VHS, and we'd watch it whenever we came to visit her when I was a little boy. :)
Great casting, great music, incredible sets - someone forgot that a movie has to to have a plot.
sweethaven national anthem
This is a case of a Movie that HAS aged well, like a fine wine....."God will always bless Sweethaven"
Who else listens to this in the morning while getting to ready for work?
Very underrated musical.
I visited this film set in malta last week, nice little place.
I think this was definitely, a very underated movie.
this would work great as a broadway musical
This movie is my all time favorite
Love this song!! RIP ROBIN WILLIAMS!
God must love this song.
Harry Nilsson was such a terrific composer. He left us with Popeye and The Point. It's a shame he didn't get to score more films.
I like to hear more music like this song
God bless this movie...I remember when cable tv first came out we had one channel HBO
This was actually the very first movie my dad took me and my brothers to watch at the movies. This was also when a cartoon artist (forgot his name) hosted Sunday morning cartoons on KTLA channel 5 while he drew animations of Popeye
I love the opening of this film. It plants us squarely in a live-action version of the Popeye Cartoons by Max Fleischer, circa the 1930's. If they had filmed it in B&W, it would've looked just like one of the original cartoons. Too bad it kind of falls apart at the end of the film. It's almost like they changed writers about 3/4 of the way through. But for establishing the mood for the film, this and "Everything is Food" are spot-on for capturing the feel of the original cartoons.
This song sounds like a true anthem!
The Anthem of Sweethaven, for all its innocent qualities, sounds semi-dictatorial.
I've never seen the movie, even though I love everything Popeye.Have heard of it, but never got to see it.Wish I could see it free..🤗👍💕
Its like a musical play shot on film. I saw this movie on tv with my dad i love this movie
Love this song. Been ringing in my ear 4 years. But i didn't know where i heard it til yesterday. 20+ years later i overhear it when a friend i watching the movie
I believe this set still stands today.
Watched this as an 11 year old kid and loved it....today I watched it as a 51 year old kid and loved it.
This song is even better when you look up the lyrics, Swept from the Sea, God must of have landed he why else would he strand us here. Safe from Democracy.
This movie would be so perfect for a Broadway show. Give it The Producers treatment.
first movie i saw on cable as a kid about 1981...good memories
Cool song.
Great song great film 👌😊💪🍺❤️

Mystic What profound commentary!
A perfecy world!
Miss Robin Williams too much!
Messed up some of the lyrics
We are people from the sea...
The lyrics to the anthem, the opening that's identical to the first line of "The Star Spangled Banner," and the fact that their currency is the dollar............all of that supports my theory that the people of Sweethaven were all American ex-patriates.
Beautiful picture.move Amen 🙏
I always loved the wide shots of a day in the life of sweet haven. Its a lot like NPC's in open world games.
God will always bless Sweethaven...
Way underrated movie & score.
"god must love us" i love it
undeniably awesome the sets the characters and wardrobe the music... perfection!
Great sets great actors just great better than today's crap
