- Join me for an amazing adventure in the Australian Alps. I snowshoe to the top of isolated mountain and set up my tent in the snow. My camp has amazing near 360 degree views of surrounding mountains. I wake up early the next morning to watch the sunrise, an amazing experience that i'll never forget. I brew up some coffee, show you my gear and then hike out on snowshoes through the snow gums. Good times!

A good tip for the sauce sachet is to freeze them to solidify the oil. When you crack open the packet they wont spill everywhere!

this video and your other one 'Solo overnight hike to a wild Australian mountain valley' were awesome! You never see anyone camping in the snow in Australia, it is always the tropical north, the outback etc, but never the Alps and never in the snow in Australia, so many people around the world think we don't have snow and skiing and mountains with snow here in Australia, if I can put in a request, please do more snow camping trips and I love craft beer too, love how in your videos you have one at the end of the day after walking

Scissors work well for the mi goreng sachets. Preheat it using hot water to turn the oil pack into liquid form. Cut across the very top of the sachets and pour.

This looks really cool, I'd love to try solo hiking/camping, but a bit scared having never done it before, especially in Australia where everything seems to be venomous. Would love a vid about soloing tips for beginners and gear recommendations, planning trips, how much water to take, etc! There's a lot of stuff on UA-cam, but I haven't found much specific to Australia.

For mi goreng I found scissors are the only way to not make a total mess of it all. You seperate the 3 sauce packets and roll each between your hands to turn them back to a liquid (especially the oil packet as it just solidifies and makes it impossible to get out). Then I just pinch the top shake it a bit to get the contents to the bottom, snip the top off and scrape it in to the pot/cup.

Now, a few tips for a successful winter camping trip: try out your tent at home in perfect conditions before you go, learn all functions/zippers/guy lines so you know what they are for and how to operate them. Then quick-rise the tent a few times so you know how to do it in adverse weather conditions. It is good practice to use your walking poles or other sticks found in the wild to bury horizontally in the snow rather than sticking your ordinary pegs vertically down. This will keep your tent secure in severe conditions. Use double sleeping mats to insulate from snow, say a Ridgerest and an inflatable one to keep you slightly off the surface. Keep the fluids up as cold conditions will dehydrate you even if you think otherwise. Thick wool socks and hat will work wonders to ensure your comfort in the sleeping bag. Make sure your tent is well ventilated during the night, your breath may cause a sudden snowfall inside if it sticks to the cold tent material. A flat surface, like a piece of plywood, will be a good base for your stove so it will not fall over and ruin your meal. Gas canisters may function better if you heat them up inside your sleeping bag/clothes before cooking. Careful filling up any containers with water as they may freeze and crack during night. Better to keep a bit of water in a bottle in your sleeping bag as it will not freeze or melt snow when you need liquids for cooking. Make sure you don´t go to sleep in need of a wee, it will surely keep you awake or make your rest uncomfortable.

@@AmyOutdoors Hello Amy, alas no. I'm in Melbourne and I doubt that Erik would risk having Ms Berejiklian locking him out of NSW were he silly enough to enter Victoria. From the elevation he has, I was thinking somewhere around Perisher or Charlotte Pass but the sinking western sunset view is a bit confusing. The boulders with a cover lichens are as beautiful as the snow gums. Wetting the trunks of the trees highlights the intensity of the bark colours. The Kosciuszko National Park is such a beautiful area, hopefully not ruined by introduced feral horses.

I started watching and thought it reminded me of a couple of cross country ski trips around Falls Creek I did when I was as 15 and 17 (a long time ago). I spent some time solo on the latter trip and had a similar 'wow' moment then. It was the very first time I'd ever spent a night alone in the wilderness and it was a defining moment for me. I would love to get back to the snow and see it again. The silence and purity is something I'll never forget.
Oh, i would also very highly recommend the Sea to Summit insulated Etherlite sleeping mat for a high R-value and amazing comfort. Love love love this mat. I've tried a number of mats and this one wins every time!

Just thing mate - I own the same tent and you can put the outside and inner parts together first then put them together easy. That's how I use mine, just saying. Also to tighten the front section - pull the rear part down a bit maybe take the rear peg a further back pulling the whole tent a bit further back - then the front will be better. Again, just sayin I've used my tent on snow many times...
Beautiful up there😍. I've just got home from Port Douglas in Far North Qld- it's hot & blisteringly sunny🤔. ........but I'd have traded it for a snow camp among the gums.

I've snow camped with my boys twice on multi night trips, absolutely amazing place to enjoy, all it requires is a bit more organisation and knowledge. E.g. Fresh socks for bedtime, never wear the socks you wore all day, otherwise your sweat will freeze and make you cold all night.
No March flies or other bugs in winter is another added bonus for Kosciusko.

I think people take issue with the noodle prep Eric is that, with Mi Goreng in particular. It is meant to be a dry noodle dish. You can try the actual version at a Indonesia/Malaysian Restaurant some time. Also try heating up the sauces by dunking them in the hot water of the noodles... it'll liquify them and you can squeeze them to one side as you cut open the sauces from the other end. Great video btw.

You really lucked out on the weather too. Couldn't get better weather if you tried. You and Scotty certainly pump out some awesome content and you've both been an inspiration to me.
Thanks mate, yeah was a great trip. They make the canisters using different blends, most of the hiking ones should be rated for four seasons. So as long as your get the right blend they work well.

Yeah it was amazing in real life, didn't turn out to bad on video through. Yes that is a plunger, it's called the jetboil java kit, makes a great brew, fairly sure you can buy them seperatley if you already have a jetboil. Cheers

Easiest way to open the mi goreng packets is to kind of squeeze it down with your thumb and index finger. Then use scissors to cut the top off 😁

Thanks mate, use a GoPro Hero 7 with a Rode Video Micro for most of my moving shots and an Olympus OMD Em1 iii with the 14-150mm ii lens. Have been playing around with a Olympus LP S4 audio recorder as the mic on that one and used that about half this trip and the Rode for the rest. Great to hear the quality is good. Cheers Erik
Snow is not familiar to many Australians so there is an education needed. There is wet slushy snow and dry powder snow and everything in between. Be dry and stay warm is the key and blow the fashion re snow gear. What surprises me with all these videos there is no safety education and people loose their lives each year trying to engage in adventure.
High again, carry a much smaller tent next time. So your body can heat the air in faster. Kindly Fiete

Hi Erik, hey mate I have a bit of constructive criticism, I dont mean to cause negative press or feedback its just an opinion Mate , in fact I've told the same thing to Scotty, however you are just that little bit more guilty of it than Scotty but you are both guilty in some way. Your videos and information are great and I have watched and follow you guys religiously however you both seem to always be in a rush, always be fluffing around and causing a ruckus more so than simply putting things in perspective and taking it slow, what's the rush guys, what's the concern, dont plan trips over night where you arrive in evening and have to get out ever so quickly the next morning, once again if you've decided to go out on a bush adventure then always add time to your plan, slow down guys, take it easy. Anyways, I love what you guys do and keep it up, Cheers Jay
Hi Jay, thanks for watching. Yep I'm always in a rush, here's why. I have a busy job and work more than normal hours, meaning it is very hard to take time off work to go camping and only have a weekend for most trips. The week before a trip, I'm up late most nights firstly planning (hours spent looking at maps/imagery) and then choosing, preparing and packing gear. I'm up usually past midnight for the two nights before a trip. I get up early on Saturday morning and drive at least 3 hrs. I then hike most of the day (not exactly through easy country) to get to my chosen location. Filming takes a lot of time and effort along the way. In the winter months, I'm up against it to get to camp before it gets dark. Filming again adds to the pressure. It's much harder filming at night, so you try and get as much sorted while there is still light. When I turn the camera off, I have often been on the go for more than 12-14hrs. I'm up early the next morning to try and get back to car so I can get home before it's dark and avoid driving narrow country roads at dusk. When I get home i'm exhausted, but I need to try and spend time with my partner and get stuff sorted for the week ahead. Then there are around 20-30 hours of editing work to do, this happens late at night the week or weeks following a trip. Every trip is a massive investment of time that takes me away from other aspects of life. It's my passion and hobby, so why I do it, but hopefully that explains the time and effort involved in each video.
@@ERIKOFFTRACK Hey Erik, very clear and precise and I'm hearing exactly what you are saying, I for one couldn't do what you guys do, I'd love to but get the impression that us as viewers only see 10% of what you guys deal with , prepare and set up for each video, its easy for me to sit and give constructive criticism when I'm not the one out there doing the hard yards, I guess I'm more or less watching you guys go through your routine and just as a viewer notice that you are looking rattled , frustrated, always go go go and I wish to see you guys taking it all in a bit more and enjoying your rewards for effort a bit more, I'm sure you do but as a viewer it would be nice to see you get a bit more back from what you put in, ;-). As I have also conveyed to Scotty, please keep doing what you are doing because I love it and many others I'm sure feel the same way, Keep it up Mate.
Yeah I have the same thoughts out on trips, it would be nice to be able to sit back and relax, but going to hard to reach places and sharing the adventure is fun in its own way. Definitely wish I had more time to dedicate to it though, but got to make do with the time I have. I actually managed to get out for a two night adventure recently. Haven't edited the film yet, but ended up spending most of the second day in the hammock (due in part to sheer exhaustion) was nice to have a day, where I could enjoy the location and observe the small things that made that place special. is this on crown land or a national park (from US), looks like your able to do dispersed camping, so that's cool
Pretty sure all the snow areas over here are all in national park mate. Crown land I believe they call state forests. As a camper with dogs we’re not permitted into national parks even know in some places the difference is a fire trail breaking them up.
Shame I can’t experience this. I love camping with my wife and my dogs but all the snow is in national park where we can’t go as responsible pet owners.

Hey mate - no, I used large snow anchor pegs - long and flat, hold well in the snow.
How long do you reckon the snow stays into the spring?
Should still be some decent drifts on the higher peaks in November
