How wild. When I went to Peace Corps in Zaire (DRC) in 1978, none of those things even existed (well , a French press, I guess). Anyway your entry made me think back.....I do remember taking about 100 different tea bags (Earl Grey, black currant, green) and a small sewing kit (needles, thread, scissors) but maybe that is easier to find now. I laughed that another volunteer “wasted” his luggage space with a boom box and 50 cassettes or so. I took a journal but used local notebooks later (still have them). A tiny brownie camera and film. Yeah, now I remember. I only took about 100 pictures, as you could not develop them locally and it was so expensive. Anyway, I hope this gets people to think twice about what is important... Being present in your new community, not so much thinking back to people back in the US. My two cents.
Visiting you for one week, I brought a backpack, and it was way too much! It was a great lesson in knowing to pack SUPER light, and washing clothes (or rewearing multiple times!) may be an option. Better to wear yesterday’s T-shirt than lug around a heavy pack. And less room for gifts to bring back home!
So true! You definitely want to leave room in your pack for any treasures you pick up along the way.

Hey, I had a question about how you packed your luggage. I heard that we will be required to leave some of our bags for site. Did you have to leave both your checked luggages for site? How did you pack your bags in anticipation of not having access to some of the things you were bringing? I am trying to figure out how to pack my bags and your insight would be really helpful!
Hello! Thank you for your question. I am not sure exactly what you mean, but let me try my best. When you depart for Peace Corps you will have your two checked bags as well as a carry on item (a backpack is best). You will have staging somewhere in the US first (1-2 nights), then have an in country orientation (2-3 nights) before departing for your training town. If you can have your first few outfits handy that would be best. I remember having to unpack multiple times in the first few nights just to be able to find those first outfits-- not fun! You will then be able to unpack properly in your training town and then again in site after training. This was my experience-- be sure to ask other PCVs as well! Happy packing!

I am 60.
Yoga mat and guitar are my two must haves.
So what do you think . Clothing I can buy in country after knowing what is suitable.

Pancio, umbrella? When in rainy season.
Lap top, Great idea. I use Mac, so glad to know that seems good.
What software for video edits?
Congratulations on your acceptance to PC Cambodia! I brought my yoga mat and did not regret it! You will need outlets for your mental health during PC, so the guitar is a great idea as well. I agree with the rest of your comment-- as for the umbrella, I would wait and see what Cambodia is like. If the locals use them, you can buy it there. I use iMovie, nothing fancy!
I'm a fellow PC invitee (Guinea) and I've spent a semester studying abroad in Cambodia. You'll be able to find an umbrella (you'll definitely want one) in any of the larger cities (Phnom Penh/Siem Reap/etc) + pretty much any 'western' item.
where do you store vital personal documents? Like a US Birth Certificate. Should those things go with you to the other country?
PDF documents should suffice! All you need is your Peace Corps issued passport.
Quick question! In what way does the form not work for a Microsoft Surface? I leave in a month and I thought everything was good, but why does it not work on it? Also, there is no way in heck I’ll be able to purchase a laptop, so how will this work for me if I don’t have one at service? ☹️
Hey there! So while you are a volunteer you will need to fill out the Volunteer Report Form (VRF) four times during your service. It is an application that you download to your computer and volunteers who had the Surface Pro or a Crome Book were unable to download the application-- basically because those types of laptops were built for you to use the company software only (Crome Books are only compatible with Drive apps for example). What country are you serving in though? You could technically always travel to the Peace Corps office to fill it out or go to an internet cafe. I hear you though! Peace Corps is not allowed to require you to bring a laptop (yet) but is is definitely super necessary. There is also the possibility that some of the more remote/"off the grid" PC countries have a different way of collecting volunteer data-- I would connect with folks who are currently in your future country of service. There is no reason to take your birth certificate to PC COS. Only your Passport is required. Leave every other vital documents in the USA.
I thought part of the whole point of being a PC volunteer was to get away from the frivolous materialism and consumerism that goes on in the US...guess not. Returned Peace Corps Volunteer here.
