Just wanted to alert you to a mistake: It's a common misconception that a bachelor's degree is required for Peace Corps volunteers. It turns out that many assignments require either a bachelor's degree or five years of professional work experience. Since very few people will apply to the Peace Corps once they have a career path well under way, it's very rare for someone without a bachelor's degree to be seriously considered, but it does happen, and it happened to me.
In my case, I dropped out of college in the 1990s to accept a job as a newspaper reporter in rural Nevada. From there I worked my way up to a job at The Associated Press in Philadelphia, where I worked more than 11 years, then I started my own newspaper from scratch in a small town in central Pennsylvania. I ran it independently for seven years, sold it to a bigger company, then remained as editor for three more years. I applied to the Peace Corps at the age of 48 with no degree but a wealth of experience.
It turns out they get really excited when middle-aged people apply. One problem they have is that most of their applicants are right out of college and many have never held down a job for a year. Sometimes volunteers freak out after a few months of service and have to be talked out of resigning. They figured someone who started a business from scratch and ran it for seven years isn't likely to give up when something becomes difficult.
I was accepted as a trainer of elementary school teachers in The Gambia in western Africa, originally scheduled to leave in June of 2020, now scheduled for June of 2021 due to COVID-19.

Thanks for clarifying that! I just double checked Peace Corps website, and it looks like you are right! The three projects I applied for all required Bachelor's degrees-- but it looks like some volunteer openings don't require it. Thank you for sharing your experience! I like what you said here: "They figured someone who started a business from scratch and ran it for seven years isn't likely to give up when something becomes difficult." Very true, and very important for applicants in a similar situation to take into account. Thanks again!
Here is the wording from the website for everyone's reference: "Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any field OR 5 years' professional work experience in any field."

@@andreareneabroad243 I'm not sure how they determine if work experience is "professional"; my best guess is that it's work normally done by someone with at least a bachelor's degree.

Just found your channel, and it has really inspired me. I'm a senior in college majoring in French and Spanish language, though I'm much more fluent in French. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do after I graduated but now I'm seriously considering the Peace Corps. Thank you!

I'm going into my senior year in college, and I'm really wanting to get into Peace Corps after college. My only foreign language that I've taken is ASL, and I'm currently studying Professional and Creative Writing. It's heavy with English, and I'm also going to be getting a Global Cultural Training Certificate. I don't have a lot of experience in education (it's not possible for me to get any kind of education minor without completely changing my major/adding another.) I am interested mainly in the education, environment, and Agriculture. I don't have a lot of volunteer experience, but I have many causes that I'm passionate about, and getting ready to get my hands dirty. I'm wondering what your advice would be about gaining experience even if I don't change my current major/certificate pathway, or just anything you think may help.

Peace Corps is making a huge effort to expand their projects for the deaf and hard of hearing community-- both PCVs and Host Country Nationals. I would go ahead and take a look at the projects that are for that specifically and then tailor your application to express your interest in working with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Best of luck!

Hi! I'm currently applying for a late 2021 departure. I put down Madagascar and Tanzania, but mentioned that I would be happy to be placed anywhere in Africa with an agroforestry project. The only problem is that I have no previous experience working with agriculture or the environment - I am just extremely passionate about it. Do you have any tips for this? Your video has inspired me to take another look at my resume because it seems to be extremely important. At the moment I am stuck on my motivation letter. I've been dreaming about joining the peace corps for nearly 9 years so I'm getting anxious about the application finally being open! Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos, they are so helpful.

I am so glad you are finding these videos helpful! The good thing is you still have a lot of time between now and a late 2021 departure date. Are there things that could help bolster your experience in either agriculture or the environment between now and then that you could get involved in? Is you major relevant to the field? Still continue to work towards your goal of serving!

@@andreareneabroad243 That is very true. I will try to gather some experience, possibly through a workaway experience. When is the optimal time to send in an application? I am starting early but I want to ensure I have enough time. Thank you for the help!

@@darlingtarot5937 I applied 11 months prior to departure, but there were volunteers in my cohort who applied much later. I would say it depends one how flexible you are with the country and departure date. I knew I wanted a summer departure to a Latin American country, so I applied almost as soon as the position was posted. If you are more flexible, you won't have to apply as early.

Andrea René Abroad Don’t mean to change the subject too much but are there any examples of the peace corps and/or various peace corps associations helping Rpcv’s get jobs in the federal government? When I returned from a two year tour in Africa, had a very hard time getting a job due to no relevant job skills.

@@stevenbjerk2114 Not at all! This is an excellent question! My recommendation would be to start by joining the National Peace Corps Association and then also joining your local chapter in your city or state. I was actually planning on making a video on how to do this soon!
