Toyota Tacoma | Midland MXT275 GMRS | Flush Mount Install | (2017 Tacoma)

- Today I finally finished the Midland GMRS install on the Expedition Essentials 3TPAM. This took a decent amount of work to make it look, function and fit the 3TPAM. After doing some research there was nothing on the market that would plug and play the way I wanted, so the parts search began. The MXT275 has a remote control box which can be mounted anywhere. The limits are the power cord length and the mic cord length. Both of these limitations are easy fixes. I extended the mic jack with a cat 6 POE 3 foot Ethernet cable to a female to female cat 6 water proof coupler which was then mounted to the 3TPAM. That is for the mic connection.
To hold the mic in place I went with a Magnetic Mic which was flush mounted on the 3TPAM. The coupler and the Magnetic Mic can be installed anywhere in the truck that has space. Installs took some time and patience to drill out large holes. Both the coupler and Magnetic Mic were centered on pre existing mounting holes for the 3TPAM and only took up one spot on the mounting surface. I really like that the mic can be stored away when not in use leaving the mounting location looking clean and tidy.
For the antenna, I really like the look of the Ghost 3DB so I fabbed up a bracket to my liking. Midland has a bracket for the ditch light mount but I though it looked a little long when reviewing pics on the internet. That was a long explanation and a long video. Hope it helps and makes sense. Antenna RE-Route Install Video here-ua-cam.com/video/D7DotMlaXaQ/v-deo.html
I know this an old video. I’m pretty sure by now you probably tucked away the radio but in case you didn’t. I would attach a usb extension to hide the radio and have the usb extension run to like the glove box to hide the wire. Other than that, great video!
Thanks for watching. Not sure what you mean by the radio. Everything is hidden and tucked away, no wires are visible. The main unit is tucked in the driver-side center console area.
2023 and I’m only seeing this now…..WTF. Absolutely fantastic work my man! You do you bro! I dig your passion for a SUPER CLEAN INSTALL, if the cleanest I have ever seen! Sick work! Love it!
Really Appreciate it. Thank you very much.
sANG man awesome video , hope I can come up with something like that in my 2017 TITAN
Thanks man, appreciate it.
That little antenna that came with that radio actually works quite well
Yes it does. Thanks for watching.
@@ClassyTacos if anything else its a decent spare antenna to have in reserve
Just Slick
Appreciate it, thanks for watching.
Lot's of work there. The win is you have exactly what you want. True Custom. Nice.
Appreciate it, thank you 😊
Thanks for your great content man!
I'm installing my Midland in my new Tacoma today.
What aux block is that?
The box is from Overland Equipped, they have a couple options. Thanks for watching.
Yes. I have a 2016. wanted to get mine ready for a fishing trip. the wiring harness for the boat should be a giggle to. :-)
Thanks for watching
Great instal
Thank you.
This dude is funny as hell
Appreciate it, thanks for watching.
Why did you bring the coax cable around the door instead of through the firewall plug?
I was in a rush, I made a second video on the antenna re-route. I came in the cab through the AC drain hose grommet. It worked out great. Thanks for watching.
@@ClassyTacos yes, after I posted this I saw your other video. Thanks for posting! 😃
@@tekspeditionplanet9109 no worries, thanks for watching.
Clean install, being a car stereo installer in my younger years I cringe when I see wires running through a door jam… Love the flush mount mic holder on the TPAM!
Thanks, appreciate it.
I like the way you think. I'd rather spend the time and money on a clean install than just throw something together. I'm so stealing this for my LJ install. Thanks!
Thank you, I'm sure it would look sick in an LJ.
@@ClassyTacos thanks. It’s gonna look good. I even fabbed up my own ghost antenna bracket to mount behind the passenger side tail light. I was able to install the flush mount port in my cigarette lighter location without any modifications.
@@jlrhodes79 Nice!
What is that dash mount apparatus by the radio...got a link?
Check out the 3TPAM from Expedition Essentials. Thanks for watching.
how was your swr with you ghost antenna on the ditch mount? apparently a lot of ground plane is needed for this 5/8 wave antennas. My SWR was above 2.1
I have never checked it, I have no issues.
Nice install. Gave me some ideas for my install on a Jeep Wrangler.
Awesome, thanks for watching!
I don’t comment on videos very often but this one is worth of taking the time. Nice install 👍
Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. I hope some of my other videos produce a similar reaction, but you don't have to comment.
Thank you. It’s good to know I’m not alone when I think of the hard way to do things.
Ha, the hard way is the only way. Thanks for watching.
I’m going to finish my wire install this weekend. I have the radio above the wireless charging pad, and I want to run my wires from the sides of the cubby - do you think I’ll run into any wires if I drill grommet holes? And any idea how I can run my wires from the glove box area to the engine bay?
From the charging pad area the sides of the cubby are empty, you should be good drilling there. Take it apart to confirm, or run your hands in the area from the back side. It's open. You can use the A/C drain hose grommet through the firewall on the passenger side to get into the engine bay. Watch the antenna re route video where I do that.
It's the little things that makes it great. Good job on the install
Thank you, appreciate it. Thanks for watching.
holy crap you have more cables and wires in your drivers footwell than I do. Nice video!
Ha ha, yup. Thanks for watching.
Just subscribed. Just got my 2021 Tacoma a week ago and love how clean your work is. I respect that!
Thank you, and thanks for watching. Have fun with all the mods coming your way. If you have not already, check out Tacoma World forums. Tons of good info.
Loved what you did it’s a pretty great idea however I wouldn’t of put my Ariel where you did the problem is it will transmit to vehicles in front of you and to the side of you however you will lose a lot of signal strength to vehicles to the rearview the signal Hass to pass through your entire vehicle in order to connect with vehicles behind your radio Ariel would work better if it was able to broadcast without obstruction 360° this is why I tend to mount mine on the roof rack. I’ve learned over the years it gets the best reception you can even get aerials that will fall down so when you’re in the city or parking your vehicle the aerial is out of the way you just pop it up when you’re on the trails. This would be the only thing I do different than what you did but hey different strokes for different folks I guess.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I wanted to put it in the roof rack but the trails here are very tight and usually low. So far I have had no issues communicating on rides. I was thinking about buying a back up 3 footer for when I head into more open areas. That would place the antenna over the roof line of the truck. Thanks for watching.
@@ClassyTacos that's good, some real good ideas. Where I do find the issue is when you're in a bigger convoy and you're all traveling together down Dusty roads the convoy distance itself out . This allows safer visibility and also stops your engine air filters from being smothered when this occurs and you're trying to contact someone at the back of the convoy and you're near the front this is where you might have issues with signal. But it's good to know you're already thinking of the issue.
Great job! I like the dash cap you installed. is that a factory piece or after market? makes a nice clean job.
Thank you. I believe you’re referring to the Expedition Essentials 3TPAM. It’s aftermarket. Thanks for watching.
Black paint pen from hobby lobby
Thank you for that. Sweet idea.
@@ClassyTacos anytime
Hide the unit and run an extension USB + panel mount to your new dash mount.
Thanks for watching.
Brother, this install is cooler than the radio itself. I've been waiting to get the multi-mount and I think you just sealed the deal. Now I get to order everything. 😆 God help me when I watch more of your content. How are you liking the radio itself vs handheld?
I like radio over the hand held, better quality and reception. Thanks for the kind words.
@@ClassyTacos question (maybe I missed it). After clipping the cigarette lighter connector off, did you have plenty of line to run to your aux box? Or did you need more wire to reach?
@@sirstan51 From where I mounted the control box it had enough line to make it to the Aux Box.
Liked the install up till you ran the antenna wire thru the door seal. no way would I have done that. But its your truck your money..
It was just a tiny notch in the rubber. I have done way worse.
Antenna Re-Route-- ua-cam.com/video/D7DotMlaXaQ/v-deo.html
Perfect install - definitely you know the job 👍
Thank you for the kind words.
Great mounting option 👍
Thank you, appreciate it.
NICE work!! That's a clean install that functions as well as it looks!
Thank you.
why don't you just mount the antenna on the roof (of the truck) ?
Great question, I don't like anything protruding form the roof straight up. Also, wheeling here the trails are tight and low. It would just get ripped off/hung up on low trees. Or I would have to continually be searching for more open/taller routes. Thats just me. Thanks for watching.
Clean install
Thank you, appreciate it.
Could you have gone threw the whole on the drivers side where everyone runs the wire?
Yes, but I wanted to keep the antenna cable away from electrical wires as much as possible. It helps with reception. Thanks for watching.
Im worried if I ever get into an accident that 3TPAM will knock off all my teeths.
Ha ha, It is bolted down all the way to the radio mounts. That thing is not letting go.
Do you ever hear anyone talking on the gmrs channels?
Yes, when we are out in the woods on a busy day, for sure. So far everyone has been courteous and respectful. Thanks for watching.
@@ClassyTacos I live in the Tampa area and haven’t been able to hear anyone’s like I can on the ham. Awesome channel content!
@@richnmib1939 Thank you for the kind words. My wheeling crew uses GMRS. The HAM radios have a further reach.
Hey...bought the same set up but for 2nd Gen and just waiting on the 2TPAM...when u added the wires to the accessory box did you put a fuse and if you did what amperage?
My 3TPAM power to the usb charger comes from the front lower cig lighter. It's not running to the Aux box, It's all in the cab for the USB charger. If you are asking about the Midland MXT275, then yes you need a fuse in the Aux box. Its was either a 20 or 30 amp fuse, I can't remember. Before you install it look at the fuse, it may have the amp rating on it. Thanks for watching.
Ok cool...yes aux box...thanks
very cool setup brudda.... i might have to do that one
Thank you, and thanks for watching.

wow man!! this was some serious install!!! this was awesome man!
I am actually installing my MXT275 as well and recording the process, however my install is not as clean as yours! i think i may copy an idea or two from your video!!
If you are in the South Florida area we should do some collab sometime!
Thanks for the kind words. I'm from Miami but I live up in the Central FL area. Thanks for watching and please feel free to use any ideas and make them better. My goal here is to spread positive vibes through out the automotive community.
@@ClassyTacos Central FL is close enough.
Same here! if you ever have any questions, ideas or anything you want a second opinion of, feel free to send me a DM!
@@Porroquio Thanks man, you too!
Damn bro, killed it with this install! I think I may have to go this route! Happy I subbed, some quality content right here my dude!
Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it. Just trying my best.
Christ man. You want to come up to NC and help my garage look like yours?!?
Thank you, I recently did a garage make over. It was so bad you could not walk in it. I really appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching.
Great install!
Thank you, thanks for watching
do you have link to that fuse box
Yes, the link is in the description. It is sold by Overland Equipped. Thanks for watching.
When drilling that hole with the stepbit, what was the diameter measured at ?
I just went and checked the step drill. It looks like it was 1 1/8 to 1 1/4. Like right between the two. Almost like If you're familiar with a step drill, you know you can wiggle it a little for an extra little bit. Almost like right in between the 1 1/4 and 1 1/8. Hope it helps. Thanks for watching.
@@ClassyTacos thank you sir.
Nice!!!
Thank you.
