Great Question! I'm pinning this. Yes, definitely. I know in my area there are often people (radio nerds... I say that as a compliment) who often will monitor transmissions and even call and check on people from time to time. There are GMRS repeaters set up in several areas to increase range. It's 100% not a guarantee, but it couldn't hurt. If you travel alone a lot I'd also suggest a satellite communicator like the Spot-X or Garmin InReach.
@@JasonExplainsThings yes I plan on getting one of those emergency ones, thanks. If I look hard enough I probably still have my Army rescue beacon somewhere.
Yeah getting fitment was a little tricky by design. But I like how low profile it is. I just wouldn't use it to mount a large tablet because that would be too much weight in my opinion... since it's relying completely on the tabs that hold the radio bezel in place. But for a phone and a gopro... it works well.
The Taco Garage Dash Multi-Mount with RAM balls works great too! I have an 11" iPad Pro, an iPhone MagSafe Charger, and the KG1000G+ front panel attached to it. Very happy so far.
Just got the TG DMM last week and have a quadlock 1" ball adapter (labeled for motorcycle usage) with their wireless charger head that should be in tomorrow. The next install will be the MXT275 and use an RJ45 socket to run the handset down through the lower dash and remove it when not needed and keep the main unit tucked in the dash
For passing stuff through the rubber grommets, wire pulling lube helps. Non-conductive and non-corrosive/rusting. Home Depot carries it, Klein tools brand I think. For sealing the boot, marine grade 3M silicone. Would be good in addition to that zip tie (really should be primary, zip tie as secondary). Really important if passing through a cut in a flat faced grommet rather than one like this Tacoma has. Great video as always Jason! Seeing your channel come up in my feed makes any day so much better!!!! ❤
Thanks! Good tip on the silicone and lubricant. I used a little glass cleaner as lube... didn't film it really because I was delirious with a cold. Surprised the install footage turned out as well as it did! :-)
You drilled holes, nooooo lol, just teasing buddy, does anyone still use CBs for off-roading anymore? Back in my day that’s what we used, great video 👍😁
So everyone I know personally switched to GMRS. Even the older Jeep crowd has switched at this point. Might be a regional thing. Yeah drilling holes is always a little nerve-wracking. Most pieces are pretty easy to replace if it came to that. And the tiny holes on the side of the center console could be easily patched. I made them very small for that reason.
I still hear people on CB where I hunt and go off-roading in SE, OH. I run both in my truck. CB is still the best option when driving on the highway for traffic info.
If the wiring is the issue I'd check out the first 4Runner radio video. That one I used the 12v outlet because it was really convenient to do so. But yeah I get it. Drilling holes is nerve-wracking... until you do it a bunch of times and then don't care anymore. 😅 Before doing the final installation I actually used the radio that way and just passed the removable magnetic antenna cable through the door. I wouldn't do it that way permanently, but it worked fine for the weekend. OR... just get a handheld GMRS radio to be able to chat with your trail buddies. Range isn't as good but still works.
If I eventually do 33's I would re-gear, yes. I'm not sure if/when that will happen. Obviously that's a lot of money. But Nitro Gear is actually headquartered not too far from me. So we'll see what happens. BUT... cough cough... a Colorado ZR2 re-gear video may be coming up... COUGH!
They make a little add-on bracket to run a light and antenna on same side. Or you can use a different antenna mount. They also make mounts that attach to the edge of the hood or truck bed.
Great video. I tapped my power wire to my QI wireless charger switch (blue wire). Ground wire to a frame bolt located behind the radio. Now i can turn it off and on using the QI switch. Mounted the base in glove box.
That's an awesome idea. I considered deleting that button and using it for something else because I never use it. If carplay was wireless maybe I would.
Question….whats the benefit to wiring to fuse box vs using the cigarette lighter plug? Also, does the sound come through the car speakers or the unit’s onboard speaker?
The install benefits are self explanatory. The sound can come out of the handset, radio body or both. You can wire an external speaker that they sell as well.
Sorry, but I truly don’t understand the value of wiring vs using the cigarette lighter plug….appreciate the response, nonetheless. Also - just purchased the Midland via your Amazon link….
What bracket for the antenna did you use? The one that comes with the radio kit is for a rail or tube style mount. Not for under the hood like you showed. Was going to do this setup but wasn’t sure what antenna bracket you used.
@ these will work perfectly! Thanks again for the response. I installed the radio kit following your instructions! I just needed the mount to make it complete. Thanks again for the detailed install video plus mount link and can’t wait for your next video!
So I can’t create my own? Lame. In the movies you always hear truckers using their own made up name like fast cat, road rager, biscuit eater, etc. I wanted to create my own name.
@@koalafan1576 I got mine in less than 20 minutes. Once you have your FRN, it's pretty quick. Write your FRN down someplace so you can refer to is if you need it - it's not just for radios. There are no "handles" on GMRS, just call letters. It's technically a restricted license and under Federal control - you have to obey the rules - and it's not uncommon for an occasional HAM operator to police the frequencies.
If I get the license and install one of these, but I travel alone will this work to call for help if needed or even find other people exploring?

I travel all over CA, NV & AZ. I monitor GMRS (scan). I do hear people and the GRMS radio.
That is a super clean mounting rail. Hope we have something similar for the FJ! I have the same GMRS radio. So much better than CBs years ago

Very nice install. I just released my install on the same unit and I used the molle panels from Cali Raised. The Tacoma is looking good!!

Good content breh
Been watching 2 Fast 2 Furious lately?! If so, no judgement from me.
Love these videos! Don't think I'm confident enough to attempt this one, but I enjoyed the tutorial nonetheless.

I'd get a gearkeeper too, that way you don't have to grab for the mic of the clip and put it back everytime.
That area you mounted your radio in is kind of flimsy any issues with it supporting the weight of the radio?
No, not at all. It doesn't rattle or vibrate.
I just applied for and paid the $35 for my GMRS license. How do I create my call sign?
They send it to you. 👍

Thank you for your videos. And GOD BLESS.
Moving the antenna to the roof rack or using a “better “ antenna will greatly improve your performance. The higher the better.
True. The performance I’m getting has been great for how I use it.
much rather have CB radio than gmrs for offroading.
Use whatever your buddies have. 👍
Short Wave Radio (SWR), also known as CB Radio?
Shouldn’t roll up antenna wire can cause interference.
Not true at all. It's not like it's an electromagnet.
Tacomms.
🤣
You really dont need half of that.
