Best video on extension tubes explained. No BS, straight to the point. Two thumbs Up! Thanks you.
yep!
Chris, well done! The best rewiever I've ever seen in here. No useless information, all clear. Even good for those who don't know english as native language.
Good luck to you!
hi Chris, I am following you since a couple of years , I bought all my equipment based on youtube reviews and I have to admit you have been an huge influence in my choices. I am trying to experiment with macro photos and I have to say you are the only one who can explain clearly the subject.I was planty of doubts and after watching your video I have all clear, again thank you so much.
+Andrea Luschi Thanks! Glad I could help.
This is so on time considering I just got my new D5300 and extension tubes this weekend. Thanks for the info.
This video inspired me to try out macro photography! Picked up some tubes with electrical contacts for only €10 and had a bit of fun in the botanical garden nearby. It's damn difficult to take pictures of ants, they're moving way too fast
One of the most informative video about Extention Tubes! Amazing work!
Your videos are really cool! With very good explanations! I really enjoy every piece of your work :)
The selfie from the ballpoint pen was just awesome! thanks for sharing!
Another no nonsense tutorial. Many thanks Chris.
Hello Christopher, I love all of your videos, very informative and professional. hello from the Bahamas 🇧🇸.
Nice video and I like the addition of the formulas too.
I have a Canon 100mm macro lens (F2.8) and have considered getting an extension tube set to get even closer.
That last pic and caption was useful for me.
Should also say I find your other videos informative and very useful too.
Thanks for your efforts
Such helpful information! Definitely worth a subscribe for all your help, attention to detail, and clarity. Cheers!
Best video about extention tubes ever !!!
Thank you :)
Thanks for this video...good to be reminded about the diffraction issue...not just the loss of light.
First video I've seen regarding the subject! Great!!
Sorry, I don't remember or maybe it's not as good as this that's why I don't remember... So this will be my first. Cheers!
As ever, you break the subject down into the relevant areas of interests and deal efficiently with each in a friendly and understandable manner. Are you a teacher? Daft question! Of course you are, at least here on UA-cam.
OG UA-cam video guy right here! Well done sir.
Excellent video very informative. Thank you for doing it.
Thanks. best information I have seen on this subject! Thanks.
I do like you reviews. I learn s lot. Thank you.
Thanks champ. Really appreciate your time & explanation.
Excellent video!
Thanks
I use tubes with my 100mm macro from canon. It's surreal and an amazing experience to shoot with.
GeorgeMaj15 is it the l lens?
Well done video, thanks. I'm a newbie on macro and I'm using an EF 50mm 1.5 stm with Canon 12mm Extension tube. Working with stack focus (Affinity Photo) I've got some very nice photos.
That's the info which other people misses, thanks
Very helpful video, thank you very much!
Very clear and informative video - thank you!
Great video!
Great video, I really enjoyed it. I hope that the video about teleconverters in macro is coming next :)
Hehe, well, I probably won't cover teleconverters, as they're quite self-explanatory...but the ND filter video should be fun, once I've finished making it
great insight. Peace and prosperity to you and yours.
I use a vintage Pentax 50mm f4 macro lens plus extenders (with an adapter for my Fuji camera). I can get amazing magnification. For most Macro work I usually need to stop down to about f8 or f9 (to get everything in focus) and use manual focus peaking (which is better with macro anyway). The Pentax 50mm macro is an extremely sharp lens and cost about £80 and the extenders £12.
Just an American dropping by to say I’ve never heard “nought” in my life before this video! And I have very many British friends!
British person dropping by to say "nought" is quite commonly used in the UK 😁
My grandfather was from Texas. He used the term "naught".
Chris you're great...! 😍
I'm I the only one learned a lot from this video. I feel like I was in class hey Chris you were a teacher? right.
great!
Good info
Awesome video my friend. I just subbed to ur channel. 👌🏻👏🏼from Denver Colorado
Love your channel so much - thanks for all you do! A question I have is that my experience with a Canon 12mm II extension tube on a 60D with a 50mm f/1.4 (and others) was that it squished the distance I could shoot from to the subject. Moving close (to minimal focus distance) and moving as far away as I could (to infinity, or there about) was only 1 inch of travel! So, it created a situation where I could not move around and nicely frame shots like I could with an actual macro lens. Never have I ran across this limitation. I only read "you will lose infinity focus." But that was not what I found. Unless that phrase means "you can only move back and forth an inch" - which I doubt. Will a longer tube grant greater freedom of movement?
awesome video loved it, can you make one video with square nd filters. wish to see these kinds of videos more
Great video, I love macro-photography and I've experimented before with extremely high magnification factors and with using DSLRs in combination with microscopes. In my opinion, extensions tubes are better than the additional glass elements you can screw on the front of your lens, despite the effect that extension tubes have on the F-number.
Question for mr Frost. Have you ever done a video on lens-reversal? I find that you can get better magnification factors using the same lenses with more distance between the lens and the subject using lens-reversal compared to tube extension
Many modern microscopes nowadays are suitable for attached a DSLR camera to it. In this instance, the camera body is attached to the microscope without a standard camera lens in between. That way, you can easily get magnification factors of 4-100 times. Though microscopes don't really leave much room for being creative, I'm often amazed by what stuff looks like up close!
All that stuff is so cool! I'm not planning any further videos about it though, unless I take that kind of photography up
interesting solution for macro shots :-)
What about inverted lenses + extension tubes? I've seen some crazy results with that but I can't find much info.
love the way you put this video together you have a nice voice and way of presenting - I am thinking about buying a Kenko extension tubes - I have a Nikon D7200 do you have any opinion on which one to get.
thank you Aletta
Hi Christopher Frost Photography Great, simple, easy-to-understand video on extension tubes. I use the 'dumb' version of extension tubes, without the electronic contacts so I have to focus manually. Shot the following image on Sunday in my kitchen where I had a little visitor. Used a Cnon 70D + 100mm macro f2.8 + manual extension tubes + a Raynox 250DCR attached to the front of my lens:
www.flickr.com/photos/48604736@N08/15738765368/
Take care and have a blessed Christmas.
Hi Chris, excellent video as always...! I am using Canon M5 mirrorless APSC + Adapter + 50mm f1.8 as my favorite setup. Can I add extension tubes with this setting? Thanks!
I like it
Thanks for the explanation!! FStop shows infinite for Manual extension tubes?? Any idea how to fix it?
Hi Christopher...Thanks for your video's..really helpful. I bought the Sigma 17-50 2.8 after watching your review. I am trying to use my Canon 70d and sigma lens with Kenko tubes...Can only focus with the 12mm attached..Used f5.6 down to f4.0 .. The 20mm and 36mm no focus at all...Any tips please!??! Thanks again. Spike
Will these work on a Canon 700d? Great video
Hello Chris! You are somehow in my mind, first with the Canon 24mm STM lens, now with the extension tubes. Excellent video once again... One question; what should a buyer pay attention for when buying one of those non-Canon extension tubes and why is there such a huge difference in prices?
I chose the Kaavie tubes because they had the best reviews on Amazon for the price you pay. The difference in price is simply because Canon like to rip people off! Although I'm sure the build quality on their tubes is probably slightly nicer than the competition
Can these extention tubes go also with a makro lens 40mm/1.8?
I can't find those Kaavie available to buy :( I wander if those are still in production. Other cheep 3rd party brand's found on Amazon have quite bad reviews
Canon 20mm f2.8
Could you put an Efs lens on a full frame using an extension tube?
I have a Canon 70-300 with a .7 mag and a Canon T7i (800D), so It's 1.12 x.
Nice video...
It is possibile to calculate the maximum focus distance between the lens and subject if I am using a 21mm extension tube on a 24mm lens?
It's probably possible, you'll have to look for the equasions on the internet
I just wonder if it can still focus on far subjects as normal or not, after we add the extension tube?
I talk about that in the video. No, you can't focus to infinity as normal
Nice video. What Kaavie model are you using here. I see the box but can not read the model. I´m looking at Kaavie extention tubes on Amazon and I see several choices.
Thanks :-)
+Eco Habitat I had the 'EXTENSION TUBE SET AT-CM'
That was a complete different review , and actually a preety good one, the question I wnat to make, is did you have try to use an extension tube (the small one) with an ef-s lens (24mm pancake) with your 6d ? and if so, how did that work..So myt question did the smallest extension tube could work as an adapter to have ef-s lens on full frame bodies, and if so, what we gain except the cost and what we lost except hte infinity focus??
That's a good question, so I've just gone and tested it for you. Yes, you can use an extension tube to sneakily put an EF-S lens on a full-frame camera. You will see reduced vignetting around the side. But even with my 12mm extension tube, I couldn't get my subject close enough to the lens to focus! So it doesn't really seem to work properly.
Hey Chris, Loved the Video... I have wanted a Macro for awhile but I need other lenses first. This may be a great temporary solution until I can buy a dedicated macro lens. I looked up the extension tubes used in this video and have seen that most people do not like them. Other than Canon brand tubes do you have any other brands that you know that may be a good alternative?
I was considering Kenko brand
Brian Michael Kenco are supposed to be very good. I haven't tried any others. Take a look at the Amazon ratings - they're good for this Kaavie ones.
Does it work with mirrorless camera?
Great video, I want to know your opinion, as a macro enthusiast (and not a very rich one) I want to buy a lens that works well with my extension tubes, I'm trying to decide between the 24mm, the 40mm or the new 50mm STM for canon. Which one do you think would be a better choice? P.S. I love your video reviews, they are some of the more completes and informatives that I've found, so thank you
Ramiro Eduardo Rea Reyes I'd go for the new 50mm STM
I think he said 'venerable' ...as in reliable and respected.
I have a question too. Both lenses are 24mm. Christopher ..are you saying if you set the zoom lens at 24mm you get a different magnification than you do with the 24mm pancake?
Well, in this case I was testing the 24-105 at 105mm, to demonstrate that telephoto focal lengths aren't affected as well as wide angles. So you can treat it as a 105mm lens in this case. In answer to your question, the 24-105 and the 24mm STM both have different maximum magnifications, simply because they're built differently - the 24mm STM is much better in this regard than the 24-105mm. Different lenses perform better or worse in this regard, which is something I try to demonstrate in my regular reviews :)
I guess you already noticed their existence. Anyway, reviews on the 60mm 1:2 (or is it 2:1....whatever is closer than 1:1) and 15mm f4 1:1 Macro by venus Optics would be nice
+Joshua Mack You're in luck - I should be looking at those two lenses in February, hopefully
What would happen if you'd use efs lenses with these adapters on FF ?
It would work but you won't be able to focus to infinity
Hi, I just met your video during my investigation and I would like to ask a question which is: When all 3 extension elements are attached between lens and camera, is it still possible to use aperture settings or autofocus ? ( especially aperture )
Yes so long as all the connections work properly
I left mine in the security in Toronto Airport. Oh well.
I might get a 16mm extension tube and use it with my GH4 and Panasonic 30mm macro and get a 1.53x magnification, although being short, you have to get quite close to your subject anyway which isn't always good. I really need to get a longer macro lens in the future.
I am wondering now if you had a Canon MPE-65 x5 macro lens if this would work? Might not as you could be be too close to the subject, especiall you'd need a huge DOF which wouldn't work well because of diffraction , but if it did you'd get a 5.3x or so magnification with a 25mm extension tube, or get two 25mm tubes and get an even closer 5.7x or so magnification. Too bad I don't yet have a Canon MP-E 65, although I defiantly want one in the future. Do extension tubes effect image quality at all?
All the info I can give you on extension tubes is in this video. As for the 1-5x macro lens, I've no idea if extra extension tubes would help.
Question on the extention tube, by concept don't the lens adapter also add the effect of extensions? Coz they add distance between the lens and the sensor?
Would a EF 50mm f1. 8 adapted on to the Canon mirrorless m3 have any effects of magnifications which is already coupled with the 1.6x crop
Nope, because it's creating a space that was supposed to be there in the first place
@@christopherfrost thank you
Why would a wider lens give more magnification? Please explain.
The calculations are in the video
Hi Christopher
I have a question, I want to buy a fast portrait lens for my crop camera, thinking about sigma 35 1.4 and sigma 30 1.4 , the question is since the 30 mom one is built for crop body should I multiply the fridge stop by 1.6 ? I mean is it right even though both lenses have 1.4 but the 35 mm is faster?
They're both f/1.4 on an APS-C body in terms of light coming in, but in terms of depth-of-field, the equivalent of f/2.2 (because you're using a cropped sensor
Could i get a link to those extension tubes please? (preferably one that ships to Switzerland)
+coooooooooool1000 Just look on Amazon or eBay
My question is, is the combo of that 24mm pancake & 20 mm extension tube actually USABLE in real life? That thing has to be crazy close! I cannot imagine using this for insects in the forest etc... Please someone let me know real life experiences, thanks a lot!
+Nerte For insects and the like, a long-focal-length macro lens (e.g. 100mm) is the way to go. The short focal lengths are best for product photography and other still-life & things that won't move or bite you (e.g. flowers).
Hello, Can I use the extension tubes on my Canon 1300D with lens EF-S 18 - 55 mm IS II?
Yup. I don't know exactly how good the results will be though
Thanks
What's the song at the very end of the vid called?
'Acoustic Sunrise'
excuse me, your recommendation about extension tube set, use tube with autofocus?
Pablo Escobar The Kaavie ones you see in the video are good
Christopher Frost Photography Can you post the amazon link to see exactly wich kaavies are those?
I have a Canon efs 18-55 and I have a extension tube but it won't focus can you tell me why
Don't know - sorry
Hi m using cannon 700d can I use 600mm lens with this DSLR
I have no idea what you're talking about
Canon 700d DSLR camera
Yes but what 600mm lens are you talking about? Here's a rough guide for you: All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
Why when I,put on the extension tubes the F stop says F00?
Depends on your extension tube - it probably doesn't have the proper electronic contacts if it's a cheaper one
do these extension tubes work with Canon 700D?
They should work with any Canon EF mount camera so yes
Extension tubes*
is it good result for 50mm with extension???
?
Christopher Frost Photography i think he meant : is it a good result for a 50mm lens vs a dedicated macro lens?
i think he meant : is the result good to use an extension tube on a 50mm lens
yes osmond' thats what i mean' :)
Hi, great video.
Where have you bought the tubes? What brand and model are?
Thanks.
Ebay, and they're Kaavie tubes
vvvvvvv nice 😘
Why there is 9 dislikes ?!
Fantastic explanation! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nice video, comme toujours, but... I have to concur with the "fussy" commenter who took you to task for your pronunciation of decimals. Hearing "zero point fifty five" makes my ears bleed. Also, more substantively, you say in the video that the magnification will be higher for APS-C sensors. No: the magnification is the ratio of image size to object size. This is independent of the sensor size. All you get is the usual pseudo "magnification" caused by the cropping of the image by the smaller sensor.
Fuck..
What has happened to a Western education? Nought point fifty three? Nought point twenty seven? It's NOUGHT POINT FIVE THREE, NOUGHT POINT TWO SEVEN... etc. I was taught this when I was _twelve_.
+Hooray for Pentax! This is a contender for fussiest comment of the week. I think I'll start keeping a file of these haha
Hooray for Pentax!, I’ve never heard “nought” in my life before this video!
