    Hi, Paul.
    I always enjoy your videos. For this one, I want in particular to thank you for sharing your failed shots at the bees in flight. Sometimes when I try something and can't seem to get a good shot, I am tempted to get down on myself or think that somehow I am just doing it wrong. I sincerely appreciate the reminder that sometimes things just don't come together as you had hoped, and that the key is just to keep at it until they do.

    Hey Paul. I very rarely respond to reviews or posts and stuff like that, but after over 25 years in Internet Marketing - SEO, Copywriting etc., I have come to be very big on, and a firm believer in, presentation. For me, it is close to the "be all and end all" of marketing in general. And this is where you come in Paul. I have watched hundreds, probably thousands, of UA-cam videos and I must admit that your videos Paul are all spot on for presentation, clarity, and relevant content. The way you present your videos is very clear and easy-to-understand. I even detect a little bit of Cockney in your diction. Your explanations and presentations are spot on and second to none. Just wanted to let you know... looking at it from a non-photography point of view.

    What I got from this: shoot at SS 200 or higher; stop down as much as possible to increase DOF; with this in mind, to improve exposure, increase ISO by a bit; use manual focus, and even move the camera to-and-fro to nail focus. One can use a speed-light with diffuser as well to avoid blur and provide enough light for the subject. Thanks Paul

    • @photogenius
      @photogenius  2 роки тому +2

      Spot on with using a speed light / flash - the only reason I chose not to use in one in this video is because a lot of viewers will not have one - however a macro / speedlight video might have to be something to consider for the future.

    • @clairehachey2189
      @clairehachey2189 2 роки тому

      @@photogenius Yes, absolutely consider doing a video on speed lights / flashes. I've been using my built-in flash for snowflake photography with very bad results; pinpoints of light showing up all over my captures. I've never owned a speed light, though I know many people use them. Nevertheless, I managed to find a DIY project and made a diffuser which I just popped over my built-in flash and tried that a few days ago while shooting snowflakes. The difference was incredible! The working of the built-in flash was not compromised in any way and that DIY light diffuser saved the day.

    Just starting macro photography with some AF extension rings and my Nikon D3500 with the kit lens. I have been using aperture mode but was frustrated at the lack of depth of field and so many parts of my insect subjects being in poor focus. Of course your video explains all this and the need to change the F number to give more depth of field and increasing the ISO to keep the shutter speed adequately high. A great video which makes me want to go out and try again some of the things I was trying and failing to get.
    Thanks again for your wonderfully clear and logically explained presentation.

    Another great video Paul. I had to re-check your other video to see if you mentioned the flower on the lens. This is the the closest you could be to an object and the lens still be able to focus. This is useful for those that don't have the expansion rings.

      The flower you mention is the symbol (sometimes the word macro) that you refer to indicates the closest you can get the lens and still focus. However with the extension tubes you can get significantly closer.

      Thanks for the great feedback, glad you enjoyed the video. The back garden is a great place to start and with some subjects like bees, butterflies and dragonflies luck can certainly play a part!
      Best wishes.

    Excellent tutorial as usual. I hope to get a set of extension tubes in the near future and try my hand at macro photography. The photos you ended up with were all well done, but my favorite was the frog on the bent branch (third one, I believe). I look forward more!

    I always keep my IS0 down to 100 or 200 and uses diffused flash to add light for my macro images, very rarely used the extension tubes now i got my hands on the tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lens

      I decided not to use flash for this video as most people don't have one, but using flash is a good idea and I might put together a flash / macro video in the future. Thanks for watching.

      @@photogenius and most entry level camera have the flash, instead of buying diffusers to go over them until I got my speedlite I used a bit of grease proof paper to diffuse the flash, thats a good old cheap hack

    Beautiful location!!
    I'd bought a set of extensions tubes after watching your last video. I've used them quite a few times in my toy photography

    Hi Paul. Regarding the choice between coloured or B/W for the cacti; definitely coloured. I think the greens add a richness to the photo that’s not evident in the B/W.

    On the Color vs. monochrome one, 1000% go with color

    I like the cactus in colour and my I chose the cactus and bee photo. I have a macro lense, but never use it.

      I think now is the time to dust off your macro lens and get out there - it is very addictive!! Best wishes and thanks for watching.
