Walls of Time - The Petersens (LIVE)

- Plot twist... The Petersens covered two bluegrass songs in a row! Emmett sounds so great on "Walls of Time" and it was a fun one to throw in the shows before we switched to Christmas. Julianne was overseas as part of her last year of college, when we filmed this video.
You can't get much more bluegrass than this, a song by the father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe, who created the genre. One night in the 1960s, Bill and his band were aboard their old bus "The Bluegrass Breakdown," when it lived up to its name somewhere in the middle of Kentucky. Watching the sun rise over the mountains and inspired by what he called the ancient tones (the whispering in nature), Bill and his young bandmate Peter Rowan came up with this song. Enjoy!

►LYRICS - Walls of Time
The wind is blowing across the mountains
And out on the valley way below
It sweeps the grave of my darlin'
When I die that's where I want to go
Lord, send the angels for my darlin'
And take her to that home on high
I'll wait my time out here on earth, love
And come to you when I die
I hear a voice out in the darkness
It moans an' whispers through the pines
An' I know it's my sweetheart a-callin'
I hear her through the walls of time
Lord, send the angels for my darlin'
And take her to that home on high
I'll wait my time out here on earth, love
And come to you when I die
Our names are carved upon the tombstone
And I promised you before you died
That our love will bloom forever, darlin'
When we rest side by side
Lord, send the angels for my darlin'
And take her to that home on high
I'll wait my time out here on earth, love
And come to you when I die
And come to you when I die

Emmet on the Dobro WOW! Big fan of this guy.
He has the voice for blue grass. Awesome backup by the girls.
I could listen to Emmett all day long
These folks just excel at everything they do! I have yet to hear anything The Petersens put out that is not top notch quality and sticks to my soul! Real down to earth yet Christ loving qpeople, no phoniness or disingenuous ever.
Wothout a doubt one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Ive listened and intently studied every recorded version i can find and have heard/seem quite a few bands performing it live.
This version immediately caught my attention the first time i heard it and has since that day, cemented itself in my mind as the greatest performance of this particular song that i have ever had the absolute pleasure of hearing.
Thank you again for sharing. Fabulous fabulous music,
Emmett's lonesome vocals really do this song justice! He nails it perfectly.👌👌👌👏👏👏
Bill Monroe, then Ralph Stanley, now Emmett !
You want to check out his own stuff, a bit dark at times but he's certainly a talented fellow.
Achievement unlocked: High and Lonesome sound.
@@BigElCat Don't forget Del.
He sounds like Dan Cominski, great voice Emmett.
Played this to my wife's grave. She passed about one month ago. Very helpful and many thanks!💛
Wow! It doesn't get any more BLUEGRASS than this! A Bill Monroe tune with an almost meditative rhythm, Emmett's 'moaning' vocals, the great instrumentals. Very nice. I love it when you throw in a song like this from time to time.
Moaning vocal - exactly! More than other performers of this song I've heard, Emmett has archaic blues and spirituals shades in his voice.
Sounds like The Soggy Bottom Boys.
WOW! I mean, seriously, Emmett...that was....WOW!! If your toes aren't tapping...if your head isn't nodding...Lord help you! The Petersen's did the right thing bringing you in!! God Bless!
I can imagine him singing "I am am man, of constant sorrow!" And really letting loose haha
...or doing his own unique take on it...
Great choice. I AGREE 👍
You really got me this time! I buried my sweetheart 4 years ago. We were together 43 years. We had ten children. I'm an old man now.
I recently lost my wife of 45 years to aphasia. There is
no way I can tell you how much I miss her, of the loneliness I feel but I am blessed by people of faith.🤫
My favorite version of this has been Ricky Skaggs, this might just knock him off of that perch. Thank you all for doing this one. I am in absolute love
This song is just perfect for Emmett
Me - "Emmet's voice fits this song so well."
Me when Katie and Ellen join in - "Okay, now it's perfect."
When you sing a song..you don't just sing a song...you tell a story...and in THIS song I REALLY felt the story of devotion and love. Thank you for this one!
I'll be listening to this one over and over. Emmett put a really nice Ralph Stanley stamp on it. Just perfect for the tune. I bet this song really brings the crowd to its feet during live shows!
Absolutely grand....peter rowan be proud of this
Emmet really hits the mood of the song. Katie's fiddle really cooks, too! Love this one!
Bands that understand that virtuosity comes 2nd to the story being told will always touch the people more!! The Petersens seems to get that!!!🤔🤔🤔🙏🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘👍👍
Love love love this, love all the bluesy solos great groove...YES!!!
Petersons that was great!! Emmett when you have a wife that’s already passed and your a widow that song just speaks volumes to me and as always you do a great job thanks guys love you all
Love this.... such a great groove, sung played and performed brilliantly...and a BRILLIANT violin solo from Kate.
WOW! Thx. And an additional great thank you to the camera artist! (and to the slight blowing wind on the day you filmed)
I love Emmetts voice, we don't seem to hear him as much as the others, often not even doing background vocals, but he always does great the few time we get to hear him sing. :)
I agree, but it's not that rare. He sings lead in more than 15 videos.
@@FrankvdMuijsenberg , understood, but youd think such a unique voice would be used singing back, too. its obvious he can play while singing...so _that_ excuse is eliminated.
@@FrankvdMuijsenbergyou counted? lol
Emmett has some serious talent.
Totally agree. Not too many musicians can handle doing both Bill Monroe and Coldplay...and do them well.
Always liked this tune!! Emmett's voice does it great justice! Beautiful instrumentation, harmonies, filming! Another gem from the Petersen gang! ❤️👍😊
A great Bluegrass song, which turns something sad, into an uplifting hope... Great job by Emmett, and the Petersen family, as always.
That was Smokin! Everyone killed it.
Perfect Stanley Brothers pitch, with just the slightest Jimmie Dale Gilmore warble. Emmett for president.
It always puts me in a an instant good mood when I see The Petersens on my inbox. ☺
AMEN!!!!!!!!
Man, that violin is great!
One of my all time favorite bluegrass songs. Well done Emmett and Peterson family.
Wonderful singing by Emmett, great instrumental support, and an outro you can't leaf behind.
Katie's fiddle!!! Sensational!!! Great song guys and gals!!!
Wow - total control of traditional Bluegrass sound. All solos are perfect as are the vocals! Really enjoyed Matt and Ellen's steady rhythm and solos. Traditional Bluegrass is in good hands!
That was great! The best I have ever heard that song played. Emmitt is one of the best dobro players in the world!
Yes, Emmett is, and always so kind, soft spoken and humble, thanks Emmett.
Ooooh a new Petersens's song, great!
May the Almighty bless you all. Thanks from northern France ♥
Emmett's style is not something I normally listen to but I do love his stuff and look forward to it. One of things I realized I like about it is he sing music that really lets the instruments come through and drive the song. A lot of great bass and banjo in this, not to mention that amazing looking dobro of Emmett's. Sounds great and a lot of great craftsmanship.
I don’t even know what to say. Wow! Just Wow. Y’all are just perfection!
Can we just take a minute to appreciate how cool Katie's boots are?
In my opinion, this is the best version of this bluegrass ballad. The arrangement, musical instruments and especially Emmett's voice express the mood of sadness and loneliness in this song like no one before.
It's amazing how Emmett Brings so much feeling and meaning into this renditions backup brilliantly by Karen Katie Ellen and Matt or as we like to call them the PETERSENS great Job Guys and Girls
I guess The Petersens have many christmas conserts this time of the year. ❤🎅🤗
Yes, they’re playing in Branson three times a week until the end of December, then they’ll have a break until about March. They’re also doing a couple of shows in Grapevine, Texas - it’s a fun place, the town looks like a Christmas movie ✨🏫🎄✨
@@Liz.Newton I'm hoping for a Christmas Live Chat here on UA-cam.🎄🥰 It's sort of a tradition by now and it's been a while since they informed us about their plans here.🍰☕ Maybe when Julianne is Back Home Again? That would be nice.🙌
Emmett's really first rate when he does his hillbilly vocal sound. Dig Ellen's excellent banjo and Katie's superb fiddle. And glad Matt's guitar is near a mike. Sounds great.
That was perfect! Thank you.
Perfect song for Emmett's voice! Spectacular introduction of dobro and Katie's solo! But obviously excellent performance by everyone, including Mom's bass line. In this song I would also add a nice mandolin solo ... maybe in the future! Come back home, Julianne !!! 🙏🐾🐻
You said it perfectly Roberto. Thank you brother
@@Sooch694 Thanks Sooch, my friend! It is certainly an amazing performance from the whole band. Authentic bluegrass with an immersive rhythm. I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving!
Hey Roberto! Hows it goin'?
I agree, Emmett sounded very good on this song! His voice is very suited to it. Everyone did great! 😊Although, while these 5 members can hold the fort PRETTY well while she is gone, there is definitely a hole without Julianne... Look forward to seeing her in some videos soon!
@@emmajo4880 Hi Emma! For me all is well and I hope for you too. I agree with you, five of them are doing great too, but Julianne's presence is very important. And not only for the image of the group, but also for the contribution of her with her wonderful voice and, when needed as for this song, even for some mandolin solos. However, I think she should be back soon, because with her they should make the videos for Christmas, but also record a new Christmas album.
@@Roberto-pd8vn Oh yeah that's right, I forgot about that. The plan was to record a 2023 Christmas album before upcoming Christmas. No rest for Julianne then when she comes home.😉
Keep that bluegrass music coming.
Katie fiddle lead was a slam dunk.
I'm going to listen to that over and over again.
This is bluegrass, how I like it. Great dobro intro and all of them are doing a great job on their instruments. Real hand made music - Great !!!
I wish Emmett's vocal was just a little louder on this one. Love this!
Lonesome vocals and a crying fiddle...it doesn't get any better. Another great song, Petersens! Hope y'all had a happy turkey day 🦃
Oh, but it does get better once the missing musician returns from her ancient university.
Emmett crushes it as always. Love everything you do, but the bluegrass classics are particularly special.
The sound quality you guys achieve in these live videos continues to impress, and it is so refreshing to hear in an age where everything is pre-recorded and owned by a few massive record labels.
Emmett's voice is perfect for the plaintive tone of these lyrics, and it's always great to see Katie's enthusiasm! I like a few "regular" songs mixed in with all the carols and humorous holiday ditties that dominate the Christmas season.
You are all incredibly talented. Peace.
Another beautiful song! Well done Emmett and the Petersens!
Absolutely love this song! Love Katie's fiddle solo in this!
I said before that I thought Emit had the truest bluegrass voice in the band. Boy, I think I was right. He sure didn't disappoint.
I just finished listening and this is what I always remember bluegrass sounding like.
Awesome job guys.
I really enjoyed this!
2:34 Catchiest part of the song
Emmett's got soul. Nuff said.
Very lucky people the american, is always summer every where you go! Greetings from Italy 🇮🇹 Gianfranco. Ciao.
Ciao Gianfranco. Questo video dovrebbe esser stato girato ai primi di ottobre, lo stesso giorno del penultimo pubblicato. Credo che facesse ancora caldo allora. Adesso sicuramente sta facendo molto più freddo anche lì. Buon fine settimana, Gianfranco!
@@Roberto-pd8vn Ciao, immaginavo fosse così, però telefilm o no sembra sempre estate accidenti. Grazie a te e buona serata.
What a banger! 10/10 for this one, folks! LOVE IT!
Julianne come on home !!!
Their talent overwhelms me! I can’t wait until a schedule is announced for 2023. Looking forward to making a 16 hour drive with our camper to see them perform!
My husband and I are planning a trip in the new year too. Looking forward to their schedule for next year. I hope that Emmett will be there too.
I'm wondering if Jerry Douglas can sing and play like this. Well done, Emmett.
Greetings from outback Australia. 4 a.m. and I'm heading to the opal mine. Wow guys. There's not a song you can't nail with the right lead vocals. You support and compliment each other incredibly well with your instrumentation, harmonies, lead vocal swaps and joy. Loved it. I'm feelin' motivated, lol.
Emmet's singing here is "High Lonesome" at its modern-day best, and the harmonies are great as usual. But I want to know where the Petersens get their rhythmic ideas. The "beat" of this Petersens' version of Walls of Time is better than any other version out there, including Peter Rowan's version, Ricky Scaggs' version and even Bill Monroe's own version. Just my opinion of course, but this particular arrangement, with this insistent, driving, almost marching kind of propulsion is quite unique, it seems to me, and very "Petersen-ish." The melody of the song gives a sort of sad, haunting feel and, maybe, a sense of longing to be with a departed a loved one, which is all pretty normal in bluegrass I guess ( and I like it). But then you put that melancholy melody to this really rhythmic, propulsive, forceful, giant steam engine kind of rocked up beat, and you get this whole new layer of meaning--like maybe a person trying to push back or fight back against the inevitability of all the cruel crap in life, including, of course, death. Or something like that. I think the Petersens are capturing the real meaning, or at least one real meaning, of Walls of Time that other versions just don't. And the Petersens did the same thing with Wayfaring Stranger. And they did more or less the same thing with Carolina in the Pines too. They took that song-rhythmically, melodically and harmonically-where it begs to go, but where the original version and other versions I've heard never went. Anyway, where do the Petersens get their sense of the "beat" a song should have???
It feels very Emmett to me. He's brought many more dimensions to their music and he dances in those darker colors that they didn't before he came. If you hear melancholy, haunting etc, they're his classic hallmarks. When you say "where it begs to go," I think that's it, he's willing to answer the call and go on a surrendered journey with the music - feeling everything. He paints with the music - build-ups, crescendos, driving it home, holding back, swirling struggle, crying out, the lot. And he can do it with a sophistication at every level where it all comes together and sometimes even juxtaposes. Turmoil, hope, inevitability, he goes wherever the music takes him. I'm not sure about about Carolina in the Pines, but Walls of Time, Wayfaring Stranger and any that he sings are Emmett arrangements. Katie does a lot of arrangements too, and they work together a lot, but I don't know how that works musically.
Wow, this really is next level commenting, and Liz' answer is also equally eloquent. You two should start doing music reviews!😉 I totally agree with you on the driving rhythm The Petersens are able to add to some songs. Here I was drawn to it immediately and found it almost meditative. Next to the songs you mentioned I would like to add 'Go Tell John' and 'I Feel The Blues...' where they also did a great job on it. Seeing the number of views on some of these videos I sometimes have the feeling that these songs are somewhat underappreciated but I personally can't get enough of them. And yes, I also think Emmett is a big factor (but I do not underestimate Matt and Karen either).
@@FrankvdMuijsenberg Yes! You know, believe it or not, I was actually going to mention "Go Tell John" and " I Feel the Blues Movin' In" but my comment was already long-winded enough, so I just let them go. But I agree with you completely!.
@@Liz.Newton Hello Liz Newton! Thank you for the reply. The very quick reply! I thought Emmett probably had a hand in those rhythms, but I was just wondering, you know? Ordinarily, I'm not all that interested in Bluegrass music. (Although I've always believed that Bluegrass/mountain music as well as Cajun music had just as much an influence on rock and roll music--the music I grew up with-as Blues did, even though Blues seems to get all the credit.) Anyway, as I said, ordinarily, I can just take or leave Bluegrass. But I just can't get enough of the Petersens' music, and part of it, for me, has to do with the "beat"-the rocked up, rock and roll approach to Bluegrass! The closest thing I've seen to the Petersens' rhythmic approach was New Grass Revival in the 1980's. They were (and still are) all fantastic musicians--you know, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck etc. But they knew they were fantastic musicians, and singers,, and they seemed-to me anyway-to be very much "in your face" about it. When they were on stage, there seemed to be sort of an attitude of " Hey , Look at us, Aren't we great?!" And the Petersens, although similar in their rhythmic, rock 'n' roll approach to Bluegrass, are exactly the opposite in their stage presentation. They seem to be just having a blast in watching and listening to each other and singing harmonies with each other! Completely different stage presentation than NGR. The Petersens seem to me to be much more Beatlesque-just singing and harmonizing and laughing and having fun-as opposed to, say, Rolling Stones-esque-i.e., strutting around and posing and posturing, and going, " Hey aren't we cool." ( Not that I don't like the Stones. I do. ) Given the state of American music over the last 20 years or so, the Petersens are such a breath of fresh air! Anyway, I've very glad to be alive to watch and listen to the Petersens come into their own. This is so fun! Sorry for such a long-winded comment. I just can't help it!
@@Hwashburn Actually, you chose a good time to initiate a deeper thought topic. Isn't this the time when the Petersens circle the wagons for a month or two of privacy and rest and planning? I can't help but wish there was some sort of Petersen message board thread where the restless among us could participate in discussions like this one. Maybe there is, and I just don't know ...
Whatever, I enjoyed reading your thoughts and the responses of others. Blessings...
I just love your voice Emmett! It has a the perfect bluegrass tone! Great job!
Amazing version. If you told me it was Ricky Skaggs I'd have no problem believing you.
I love the old bluegrass songs and Emmett's voice on them. Feel free to lean into it.
Blessed bluegrass right there !!!! AWESOME !!!!
Tuning in from Lincolnshire and loving that bluegrass sound😁
The Petersens for me are one of the best ever bands, thank you very much for all your daily effort, your music is pure natural instinct because all of you sings with your heart ♥
Pure joy and lots of smiles while watching. Thank you all (especially Emmett) for this great performance. God Bless!
Emmett is a truly awesome musician!
It's great to cover a Bill Monroe song. IMO, the fiddle really makes this song. Great job!!
Emmett is absolutely outstanding, more please!
Emmett is so cool and relaxed, he even has time to enjoy the falling leaves mid-song!😂 (2:48)
Good catch, Frank! I never noticed! 😉
Honestly, I mean come on. Daggone They are good. So good. This brought the thought in my mind of them doing Nicolette Parsons Angels Rejoiced.
Amazing, send more guys !
The best! Can't get enough of it.
It's not even winter yet and watching this video makes me miss the green leaves and grass.
Matt, Karen awesome as always very much appreciate your hard work and dedication, Ellen, Katie awesome playing, outfits, moving around/dance, you both bring a ton of awesomeness to the show, different styles both great. Emmett you always seem to get just the right mix your experience shines through. I listened to Peter Rowan for just a bit then back to Emmett it was, thank you all !!!!
