Fun Fact - In the mini series version you can see the captain sitting on it and turning in circles out of boredom after weeks without any action. That is also described in the book which is an eye witness report of the author.
there is newsreel footage of the Commander sitting at the attack periscope. I don't remember the boat in question, but the Commander manually turned it with a crank mechanism
The height and rotation of the attack periscope was controlled electrically, what you saw was the back-up system they had in place. I believe the newsreel you are talking about is of Endrass' boat, I don't know if they were having electric problems or doing it for dramatic effect, they were also moving the dive planes manually rather than electrically.
@@boonamai8926 Every so often you can find accounts of them turning off the dive plane motors but it is false to claim this was commonplace. I will correct my previous comment as the periscope was actually not controlled electronically but it was operated via hydraulics.
You're right. The "Horcher" should have had constant contact to the Corvette. I also wonder why the Kaleun didn't ask him for information about the contact the second he lost visual. It's a bit of a pity that especially during one of the most tension-ridden moments in the movie the makers made a mistake that big. Turning off the engines when a uboat was sighted with possible attack intent is just foolish. Must have been for dramatic reasons. Greetings, Lars
I would assume since they are are so high up in the water and the sea is so rough that it would probably disturb the hydrophone. In the last moment of the scene you can see the hydrophone operator is actually doing its job, but only as soon as the sub went a bit deeper.
@@larsdetering8996 The hydrophones of that time had a blind spot of 60 degrees at the stern and 20 degrees at the bow. Later models had a blind spot only at the stern, and it was smaller. It is possible that the sonar operator didn’t hear the destroyer because it was in the blind spot, but I am more inclined to think this is a cliché in such movies-destroyers always appear out of nowhere and disappear into nothing.
As suggested above, another reason is that the hydrophone requires a depth below 30 meters and a speed of no more than 3 knots to function properly. At periscope depth, the hydrophone is not very effective, although this issue also was resolved in later models. It's not entirely clear which modification of the Type VII this is and what kind of hydrophone is installed.
Apologies for not knowing German. What is the command he gives when sitting at the periscope when he orders them to battle stations. If someone could spell that in writing, I would be very grateful. Also has an appealing sound to it
i dont really understand why they instantly needed to dive. i am assuming the destroyer did not yet have radar so they could have just tried to get away on surface. the u-boat will always see the destroyer before the destroyer can see them. and the weather was pretty bad too, which would have propably been to their advantage.
d00mer 34 RADAR would be useless anyway to spot a U-Boot, but here the scene shows that this destroyer had the new ASDIC about which the BdU and the German Navy didnt knew about yet.
i am pretty sure that Radars are perfectly capable of spotting an surfaced uboat. also does ASDIC even work on surface level? and that still doesent really answer the question why they dived.
U-Boot surfaced 17 knots maxed out, any destroyer is twice as fast. The Kaleun says the periscope was spotted by the destroyer despite the bad sea. So would the surfaced vessel. That is why they had to dive. Once spotted either by radar or by eye, a WWII U-Boot never could outrun a destroyer on surface.
The Hydrophone of a Typ VII is directional, meaning it can only listen to one bearing at the time. Since they where about to attack an alone driving destroyer, to which the boat had visual contact, the hydrophonist would have the hydrohpone constantly turning at a slow pace, to listen for other ships. Therefore, the hydrophone could've been listening to a bearing directly opposite of the destroyer when the lost vidual contact, and therefore beeing unable to quickly reaquire the destroyer. Also, as can be seen through the periscope, the sea was quite rough, making the ambient noise heard over the hydrophone very loud, wich makes it very difficult, to pinpoint and track a ship.
I don't understand this maneuver. Quite sure that the submarine was not targeting the destroyer. Also the engines were not running so they couldn't move. Even if the captain lost track of the destroyer he should have fire the torpedos. So it was a mistake of the old man - however the way this guys is portrayed in the film it doesn't make sense if he makes such a mistake early in the movie.
The boats engine do not run when submerged as they would be nowhere for the diesel fumes to go.The boat runs off batteries when submerged and must be recharged by running the engines.
Can move underwater with batteries and motors. The destroyer saw the periscope, although this front on aspect would make it very hard for the sub to hit.
Of course electric engine is running and the boat is moving, moreover it *has* to move for that's is how it is keeping depth. This is not Silent Hunter, this is a cinematic and very accurate portray of submarine war. If you believe a Kaleun firing 4 of his precious 14 torpedoes towards a target he could not *securely* lock on, you do not understand anything at all.

My favorite part of this is how smooth everyone comes down the ladder into the conn except Werner
Possibly the only known footage of the sitdown style of periscope found up in the tower of the U-boat. Stunning just for that alone.

The one thing that could make a seasoned U-Boat crew shit their pants was a destroyer coming straight at them.

well, if he left them open the torpedotubes could get damaged, possibly creating a leak
