    One hour in to two of my absolute faves in discussion! Don't do yourself a disservice on your linguistical capabilities Johanna, I think you (along with Sarah) are one of the most thoughtful and eloquent book tubers that I follow.

    This was such fun! I love this series. Thanks for hosting , Johanna. :) I loved the Three Body Problem , it is so cerebral and demanding but really invigorating mentally. I am yet to read the rest of the books in the series .

      Thank you, Angie! 🥰 I’m glad you loved The Three-Body Problem! I’ve heard that the second book is even better! I’m looking forward to getting to it someday.

    I'm sorry, I recommended this to you once already 😅... but hearing you talk about how you like to read about classical music in books I'm sure you would love that aspect in Thomas Mann's Dr. Faustus. It's a German classic and an interpretation on the Faust myth. The main character starts off searching meaning in studying religion but unsatisfied discovers his passion for music and as to be expected makes a bargain with the devil. As a musician myself, I think I've so far never read musical descriptions in literature that impressed me more. They can be spell-binding. The book is also a metaphor for the ideological allure and corruption in Germany during the 1930s

    One Piece is one of my all-time favorites! The trick not to feel overwhelmed is to just commit to one arc at a time. Like The Realm of the Elderlings for example, when you group it in trilogies. My advice would be to read up into and including the Arlong Park Arc (ca. the first 11 volumes) to see if the series is for you and then continue as I said before.

    The part on languages made me chuckle. I grew up in a latino household, but I knew little Spanish. My English was on point though.

    I bought Mists of Avalon a year or so ago and was super excited. But right after I came to know about the controversial life of the author and it was very disturbing. Usually I can separate the art from the artist but this really soured on me, maybe because I didn't expect it going in and it is about a topic I really care about. So I put it off. I'm still interested in reading it some day but my first reaction was to throw it away 😅 So sad that you don't want to talk about it, Sarah, because I'd really love to hear your thoughts on this. But I respect your decision.

    • @Johanna_reads
      @Johanna_reads  Рік тому

      It’s really too bad about that controversy. I was curious about the book for many years!

      @@Johanna_reads I resolved to read it and see if there's some ideology on her part in there or if it's just a good story and judge it on its on merits. I mean people still read Lovecraft, for example, and it's known that he wasn't the nicest person. But it's sad, that there's this thing lingering in the background

    From what I can remember I'd say that Mistborn Era 1 felt more like YA than adult fantasy to me

    • @Johanna_reads
      @Johanna_reads  Рік тому

      It’s sold in both YA and adult fantasy sections. I heard that Brandon Sanderson marketed it that way on purpose!

      @@Johanna_reads I didn't know that then :D I read the whole thing and overall liked it, although I'm not the biggest fan of the ending even though I think it's a good ending. I loved the magic system and liked most of the characters and the world and the plot. But I had this lingering feeling, where I wasn't satisfied and I liked it less the more I got away from it but couldn't explain it. Now I think it might be because of the more YA aspects. Because back then I thought I was going to read adult fantasy. He introduced a hyper-violent world but then again nobody swears (I know, the mormon thing), sexuality is seemingly non-existent, etc. I guess I didn't understand why we're in this bleak world where he explicitely and graphically describes the violence but purposefully holds back on other aspects. That really rubbed me the wrong way. Had I gone into it knowing that... but then again I might not have even read it ^^
