  • The human brain is probably the most mysterious organ in our body. Scientists keep learning new facts about its work, but it still hides lots of secrets. There are a few simple ways to boost your intellect and improve your brain power, and they will surely surprise you!
    TIMESTAMPS
    Chronic lack of sleep worsens memory 0:40
    Prolonged stress destroys the brain 1:07
    Love and hate have a lot in common 1:29
    The brain is sensitive to dehydration 1:53
    Pregnancy changes the brain’s structure 2:13
    The abundance of sugar reduces the ability to learn 2:39
    Romantic love and maternal feelings are very similar 3:25
    Painting improves the work of the brain 3:58
    Reading trains the brain 4:33
    SUMMARY
    - During a full night’s sleep, brain cells remove toxic compounds dangerous to our brain.
    - A decrease in memory, in the ability to learn, in self-control - these are the consequences that chronic stress is fraught with.
    - British scientists found out that love and hate originate in similar brain areas.
    - Our brain is almost 80% water.
    - Scientists proved that pregnancy reduces the amount of gray matter in the brain areas responsible for social cognition and the ability to understand other people.
    - The abundance of fructose in the diet slows down the brain and reduces its ability to learn, remember information, and concentrate.
    - According to brain activity, romantic relationships and maternal feelings are very similar, but there are differences as well.
    - A study showed that painting and contemplation of works of art improve the interaction between brain areas while slowing its aging.
    - Oxford scientists proved that the process of reading trains the cognitive abilities of the brain. It also activates areas that aren’t used at other times.

      Saying “it’ll majorly boost your brain” is confusing and probably just ear candy. It’s not like it’s going to suddenly make your brain capable of complex math equations.

    Just a heads up on reading, since it's nice to see so many book lovers here--only reading an actual ink and paper book will give most of the benefit. When reading an e-book, the brain reacts differently and not as deeply. It seems that we need the feel of a physical book-its weight, holding it, turning the pages-all stimulate the brain much more. It's about the interaction between an actual physical object and our brains. In other words, we connect much more with the "real" rather than the "virtual" world of words.

    • @adrianmcleod3067

      @@adrianmcleod3067 There is nothing like the feel of a physical book in your hands. We are made to interact with the real world, not digital. Staring at screens will never substitute for the real thing.

    I've learned my first foreign language watching TV and the second playing computer roleplaying games. Though the second one involves some reading, the first doesn't, so I have no idea what you're on about. And don't get me even started how much of my working knowledge I attained while I was on a caffeine+sugar high. Also it might have been prudent to mention that while O3 fatty acids negate the mentioned effect of sugar, you shouldn't stuff your face with fish on a regular basis, because you can easily get heavy metal poisoning.

      Meditation alone cannot increase brain power. It can free up space that was already there and allow you to drop baggage, but unless you actually use your brain, nothing is gonna happen.

      Sean O'Neill, The pre-frontal cortex is the decision making part of the brain and is also in charge of concentration and awareness. It has been concluded that meditation builds brain cells, increases gray matter and allows the brain to slow responses to stress, providing better concentration, learning and memory.Sep 27, 2017

    Quick question for #1. Watching TV doesn't have the same effect as reading...but what about watching anime with subtitles? Does that compare to normally reading, or does it kinda just float in the middle between tv and reading? Also I feel like video games, specifically role playing games, may yield good results "since they usually entail lots of reading and situations to deduce."

    4:33 Does this explain why I'm spending more time reading the comments sections of videos than watching the actual videos themselves sometimes?

    • @verbulent_flow6229
      @verbulent_flow6229 3 роки тому

      Well, I don't know. However, since this video can be broken down into plain text, I think that comments can actually serve as an extension of the video. This actually applies to lots of videos, which is why I am fine with just seeing text as it is instead of being stylized in an audiovisual format.
      TL;DR The videos are just words being spoken with obnoxious graphics.

    So while watching the movie Flatliners (2017) and seeing medical students complain about the fact that their brain cannot absorb anymore knowledge, and then seeing their teacher tell them that they either have to do better or drop out, it got me thinking. Say you're a medical student and your day is divided between practical (work on patients) and studying activities, and say that we do know that everything has its limits (a man can only run so fast, hold their breath for so long, etc.) then we know that there is a limit to how much knowledge the human brain can absorb and how fast it can do so. As medical knowledge grows it becomes unreasonable to expect a human being to do more than is physically possible. Given the limitations of the brain (learning capacity and speed) and also other limitations such as the fact that a day is comprised of 24 hours and a human can learn for so many hours out of these 24, there will come a point where we can no longer learn more and can no longer get better doctors (the same situation could apply in other professions). If I were to compare this situation to computer programming I would say one solution to this problem, which is a solution used in computer programming, is to rededicate existing resources to holding different data and following different processes based on changing goals. So in computer programming to make the program do what we want it to do we have to make it use computer memory (ram) by declaring variables in the program and using those variables in algorithms that make up a process. The variables are the resources used by the program to achieve the output of the program. The problem is the amount of variables you can use depends on the amount of ram the computer has, and when you are short on ram you simply reuse the same variables you use for one process but this time use them for more than one process. Even this solution has its limits. It means the process you need to use the variables for will be limited to a certain amount of variables again based on physical memory (ram). So say a doctor needs to know X amount of bits of knowledge to be able to make an accurate diagnosis, and his brain has the physical capacity to only hold up to Y amount of bits of knowledge then he will only be able to make diagnosis that require Y amount. What if we have a diagnosis that requires Z amount of bits of knowledge and Z is far greater than Y? What if no human being will ever have the physical capacity to hold Z amount in their head to make an accurate diagnosis. Then we could turn to computers following predictive models with the computer being able to take into account more bits of knowledge than a human being and use them to make an accurate diagnosis. Or the brain could solve the diagnosis in several stages or steps, with each stage requiring the "full" capacity of the brain (this could also involve a group of people working on the same diagnosis, boosting the brainpower). So I think the brain has its limits and that we would need to use programs to extend its capacity, just like we use cars to make us move faster and planes to make us fly when we cannot do so on our own.

    • @febetoortelboom5962
      @febetoortelboom5962 2 роки тому

      If there would be a limit on the amount of information your brain can hold, then it would be different for everyone. The teacher has to know everything himself/herself. And our brains might evolve, so that they can stack an almost infinite amount of information.
