Yummy. Nothing better than a fresh tortilla with fresh green roasted chile down the middle, sprinkled with garlic salt, and then wrapped into a taquito shape... HEAVEN. ❤
@voxifera2300 I just roasted 10 pounds of Hatch chile! I was raised on it growing up in NM. I used to have to order it fresh directly from Hatch for years after moving to SoCali, but many of the grocery stores now have it available here, thank goodness. But you've got to be QUICK, or it's all gone from the grocers as soon as they receive it and put it out for sale, lol... so I'm always ready in August and call the produce managers to inquire when they'll be receiving their stock. Naturally, I'm banging at their doors as soon as they stock their bins, lol. Hatch chile is a part of my native New Mexican soul. Ü
I grew up in Albuquerque and my grandma and my 2nd mom always laughed at me for only liking red chili instead of green chili. My grandma ate green chili with everything. Hatch of course was the place to get chili.
OH MY WORD! I did it! I made them! THANK YOU JOSE! ...so my old neighbor and I would call each other up and meet at the fence & trade food! She'd send her Tortillas & amazing salsa & I'd send eggplant parm or whatever. We had so much fun then we both moved away. I checked on her during covid and she gave me the recipe! Total Crisco fail! This dough is so much easier for me! Now if I could just make a circle instead of tasty lopsided circle-ish LOL
tastes the same, my sister! But secret is if using rolling pin of any kind is to move the dough one quarter turn each smooth pressing. evenly. Or buy one of those presses - put the ball of dough between two pieces of parchment or waxed paper for easy removal!
On another video for tortillas, it showed the person using the bottom of a frying pan and pressing each round ball of dough flat with the pan in one swoop. They looked pretty circular.

I love that you did it without a tortilla press; I want to eventually make tortillas but thought the press was a required part of the process so can't wait to follow this recipe at some point!
I always used a pan. Just put some plastic wrap ( I use a ziploc bag) on the bottom of a pan so it doesn't stick and roll into a ball and press down. Kinda like a smash burger
Works better if you use a heavier pan like a cast iron but any pan works really. If you use a ziploc bag just cut it so you have 2 pieces of square plastic. 1 on the counter, 1 on the bottom of the pan

Same for corn tortillas. Nothing better than butter with a pinch of salt! Takes me to My Childhood with my Abuela and Tia! Soooo good that sometimes I was full from just eating tortillas!
Yep! Although it does typically does refer to corn tortilla dough, the word masa in Spanish literally just means “dough” so it could be used to refer to any dough.
We used to go to my great grandma and grandpa's on new years to make tamales. She referred to the corn dough as masa, but tortilla dough as... dough. The same with my grandparents. The term masa was saved for corn only in my family.
In Mexico it’s just flour, salt, warm water, and a lil Manteca. I have never seen someone make tortillas with baking powder or butter but they look pretty good tho just a lil too thick
This is the way my grandma makes them and she was raised in the New Mexico/Colorado area. I do think the thinner tortillas are better for burritos/folding but these are better for sopping up sauces
Jose, I had been looking for an ez recipe for tortillas and I found yours. I attempted the recipe but with the exact ingredients my dough turned out very dry. I added a bit more butter and a bit more water to the mix and it was just about right. Thank you so much for posting your recipe 😊
Eyeball it lol that’s how the best tortillas are made. Each time it will be different, it’s more about the consistency and texture of the dough that’s important. Also don’t use hot water use warm…hot will fuck it up
That's what I'm trying to eyeball from the measuring cup. My guess is 1 3/4 c water and 2/3 c butter. Don't add all of the water at first just in case it's too much. But I hope we get actual measurements 🤞
@dyduty I thought so too, that's why I said not to put all of it in at once. Maybe the first cup then 1/4 cup at a time. It looked like he had a 16 Oz (2 cup) measuring cup.
These are thicker like a Texas/Chihuahua style tortilla. Sonoran tortillas like I grew up with are much thinner. Similar ingredients (though baking pow isn’t always used in Sonora) but rolled thinner. Also, lard will help ensure the tortilla stays chewy/flexible when rolled so thin. Butter/shortening tend to make it crispy when rolled thinly.
❤ I just made the tortillas using pork lard and they turned out beautiful! Thanks so much for this simple and perfect recipe. I appreciate your videos and humor.

Exactly how I like mine too !😅
I grew up in Albuquerque and my grandma and my 2nd mom always laughed at me for only liking red chili instead of green chili. My grandma ate green chili with everything. Hatch of course was the place to get chili.
Omigosh, that sounds AMAZING! I'll have to try that! Thanks!
Love watching you!! Talented and hilarious!❤😂
OH MY WORD!
@@Shoshi770NYC Thank you! I have gotten much better at them but I use a lot of flour, I'll have to try the parchment! We love Jose! : )
On another video for tortillas, it showed the person using the bottom of a frying pan and pressing each round ball of dough flat with the pan in one swoop. They looked pretty circular.
I must say after all these years making them with the just add water method ( white wings flour) This is most definitely the best tortillas I’ve ever made!! I feel like a chef making them from scratch now😆 thx for this amazing recipe!! They came out perfect ☺️!!!
How much water and butter did he add? I heard him give amount on salt and baking powder but not on water and butter.

I made these tortillas and I had one problem. Made every shape with them except round. Triangles, rectangle, trapezoid, yup 🤣 They tasted delicious of course. Nice job 👍🏽

Shape doesn't matter! 😂
I've got the same exact problem whenever I make dough for Pizzas...like you say, "...every shape ...except round."

I'm East African and I live in egypt never had authentic Mexican food and there are only few resturants made only by Egyptians they are not the real deal. I started to to learn how to make tortillas at home a week ago and I love them❤❤❤
Now try something else. Before you know it you’ll own a Mexican cafe
Perfect. I ❤️ Love fresh , warm tortillas.. I could eat just the tortillas when they're warm and buttery. . Soo good
Watched it six times with my mouth watering. So good. Makes me want to go get Mexican but will settle for pan warmed tortilla from the store. Thanks for the idea of butter and sugar! I like watching you because you are genuine but not too crazy. Good job! A grade for demonstrative speaking! (I taught speech.).
Corn tortillas are made with a press
We always used a rolling pin to make ours. If my mom was rolling and I was cooking, we could crank out a batch of 20 in less than an hour.

Sopapilla recipe✨
::4 cups all-purpose flour use a table knife to measure correctly.

::2 teaspoons baking powder use a table knife to measure correctly
::1 teaspoon salt
use a table knife to measure correctly
::4 tablespoons snow
cap lard use a table knife to measure correctly
::1 1/2 cups hot water
Start with one cup right away-mix then keep adding gradually. You may need a little more water as your knitting the dough. You'll know since you've made them before.
You may want to look up other sopapilla recipes before you decide to make them...

Something so versatile, so surprisingly simple to make
In Honduras we make baleadas their basically flour tortillas con frijoles, huevos if you want some, avocados, crema y queso. Best breakfast ever.
In Mexico there’s something similar called empalmes except it’s 2 corn tortillas with all the stuff on top and cheese in between them

Dang man, I got sentimental over this - feeling like a kid again.. Priceless
Gorgeous. I didnt know it was still called masa when making flour tortillas!! Interesting
Yep! Although it does typically does refer to corn tortilla dough, the word masa in Spanish literally just means “dough” so it could be used to refer to any dough.
Masa just means dough…
As they said it means dough. So even when making desserts you will listen the word "masa"
Just asked the same question.
We used to go to my great grandma and grandpa's on new years to make tamales. She referred to the corn dough as masa, but tortilla dough as... dough. The same with my grandparents. The term masa was saved for corn only in my family.
That looks great
As a West Texan..the day isnt right without tortillas! Homemade are the bomb!

Armor lard, not butter 😂👍
Jose, I had been looking for an ez recipe for tortillas and I found yours. I attempted the recipe but with the exact ingredients my dough turned out very dry. I added a bit more butter and a bit more water to the mix and it was just about right. Thank you so much for posting your recipe 😊
Thanks! You’re gorgeous too! ❤
Those look so good! What were the measurements for the butter and hot water? I think that might have accidentally been edited out.
@@lauragenherrin 1 3/4 is a bit too much for 3 cups flour to get this consistency for the dough
@@dydutythat’s why measuring would help, eh?
@dyduty I thought so too, that's why I said not to put all of it in at once. Maybe the first cup then 1/4 cup at a time. It looked like he had a 16 Oz (2 cup) measuring cup.
Guatemalan but sounds Italian and Middle Eastern. LOVE IT!!
This needs to be pinned, Sonora style flour is significantly superior to any other flour tortilla style.
