Acrylic Pouring on Ceramic Tiles: Prepare and Create [Gesso vs Adhesion Medium]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 жов 2024
- In this video, I will look at how to prepare tiles for painting, and especially for acrylic pouring. I get a lot of questions about how well paint sticks to ceramic tiles, and shouldn't I at least gesso the tile before pouring. You would think that was a good thing to do usually but I've found adding gesso or any other surface prep to non-porous surfaces has caused me problems in the past.

Thank you for taking time to show us--beginners what can be done
I watch as many artist's videos as I can and I find yours the most informative and well organized of all of them. Thank you for editing them and waiting for added shots of dried, finished projects. I plan on doing a series of coasters and this was very helpful.
That's very kind of you Don, thank you.
I agree with Don. Very good quality videos!
Thanks, I am doing a few tiles as gifts for my team, looking forward to it and won't prep them... Awesome
Thank you so much for taking the time and investing in products to perform 'tests' like these. You are such a generous teacher and an amazing artist. I LOVE every one of your videos!
I can't thank you enough for the sheer frustration you've just saved me!
Your tiles came out so beautiful. I would have like to see what you did in those cups!
Oh my gosh the center tile had a perfect red heart! I couldn't yell loud enough to stop you!!!! Wow! How cool!
Love the pink heart on the middle tile (showed up prior to tilting) 💕
One of the most helpful youtubers thank you
Very helpful. Love your banter during pours and the rooster.
Oh yes, I can chase them off as many times as I like, but as soon as the camera starts rolling, they start crowing
That was great, really interesting. I bought some tiles at the weekend to do some coasters, except they're a bit big so might have to be tea-plate mats, and I think you have answered all my questions. I've also had cracking happen when I let a pour dry and then decided I didn't like it. I couldn't remove the paint, so put a layer of gesso over it so I could re-use the canvas only to have my new pour crack and split when it dried. I love watching you work and your explanations are always so clear, and often funny, with no irritating and intrusive "background" music. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video, I found it to be very helpful
I just got a couple dozen tiles of varying sizes from the lady down the road for free... you definitely answered my question of prep or no prep. Thank you so much for this video!
I’m so thankful to find your tutorial today before I went out and bought an adhesive for a project I was working on!! You did a fabulous job of explaining and showing the difference in the completed comparison. Thank you so much for giving your time and experience!!!!
Thank you! This is exactly the information I was looking for!
Thank you. This was very helpful.
I have worked on unprepared tiles with pours but really had no idea of what I was doing. I was bracing myself to learn that they would disintegrate in a few months since I didn't prep them. What a relief to learn my tiles will be okay! My budget is cheering as well. thank you so much for this very informative video. I'll be watching more of your work in the future!
I think you'll be fine Linda. Just give them several coats of a good sealer and the paint should be good.
Thanks for that experiment. I just recently began pouring on tiles, and all I have done to prepare the tile is to clean it before pouring on the paint. I've often wondered if I should be doing something differently, but with your experiment, along with the results I have received thus far, I feel good about the method of simply cleaning the tile before I do my pour. Thanks for taking your time to help the rest of us.
Thank your for this video. I just did a pour on tile. I didn’t prep it. You answered my question!😊
Thanks Deby. So pleased with your experiments..😘
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Just watched a couple of your short videos on how to prep (or not) and seal already glazed tiles and I got all my questions answered. Thanks again for sharing all your wisdom. ☺️💕
Thank you again for the experiment. I appreciate your testing for us. I'm just beginning to paint, so it's nice to have your expertise.
Bless you....I have been trying to get an answer to this question and now I have it! I also spotted the shoe in the background and had quite a chuckle.
Glad it was helpful - and yes the shoes, I'll try painting on anything!
Thank you for this info I just found some 12x12" floor tiles in my garage. You did a fantastic job explaing. Can"t wait to try
Thank you I am grateful for this information.
This is so great!! Such a perfect trial! I have some tiles that I practice alcohol inks on, but didn't know if acrylic paint would stick well, so it great to see this! Thanks so much!
They look beautiful!
Thank you for sharing this. I'm going to pour on some tiles to put as a backsplash in my kithen. this really helped me.
Great knowledgeable presentation. Thanks.
That was awesome! Thank you - I've been wondering and was going to experiment with tiles... you do an amazing job of explaining and organizing!! Thank you!!!
Wow, thanks for doing this Deby. I have been worried about pouring on tiles, but I guess that as long as you seal it well, all should be OK.
Yes the sealing afterwards is more important that using a preparation before.
Thanks so much. New to this art Just what I needed to know.
The tests are great. I have problems with "puckering" right after I varnish, even though my paint is fully smooth. Been frustrated for a long time about it.
well done! thanks for sharing your results here
Wonderful experiment, Deby😆..thank you..
Good to know. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this experiment. I purchased 5 tiles to paint and was not sure if I should use gesso on them first....now I know.....no way! :-)
Your video was well done and informative, thank you. I have several tiles and helpful to know! 👏🏻 💐
Glad you found it useful Sharon.
Thanks so much for sharing this. I just started yesterday pouring on tiles...I did 8 yesterday and 10 today and after I finished I was worried that perhaps it would peel without anything as a base. Glad to see the plain one worked the best. Nice color combo.
Do carry out your own experiments though. Maybe different paints might work differently.
Wow, thank you so much for this video. I just started pouring on a couple tiles and was wondering about prep as all I did was clean it with Isopropyl 91% then dry it before pouring.
Very helpfu! Thank you!
Good tips! Thank you Debi!
That is really informative and very helpful. Thank you for sharing
thank you, yes, that's a very helpful video.. I've been wondering about this for a couple days, and ta da, you have the answer...
Thank you found it very useful
Thanks ! Just plain tiles next time for me. Just what I needed !
thank you very much,,,i was just about to do a bathroom mural over very old 1980s style tiles. i have just found acrylic paint by accident, in school art class we only had poster paint, i was about to gesso the full bathroom, gesso cost a fortune !!! i will do a test area 1st, so fingers crossed an Amazon scene with a few leaves and the waterfall ,,,wish me luck..will send you photos if it works.........sean,,,Belfast
What do you use as a finisher. Please demonstrate thanks. This has been very helpful.
I did my first pour onto cleaned (with alcohol) ceramic tiles a few of nights ago and after drying for 2 days, the paint (acrylic mixed with Floetrol) peeled of very easily (almost like a skin) on 2 and the other 2 were perfect. What kind of paint and flow medium did u use on your tiles? I was happy to see that I don't have to buy more products for adhesion; I live in a small home and my crafting space is very small. Storage of paints and accessories is precious so the less new stuff I have to get the better it is. Thanks for always providing very clear and concise information.
Thanks for sharing I am planning to do it next weekend
They still look pretty. All of them.
Very helpful......realy appreciate the experiment. Will be trying the tile coaster pour soon. I was not sure if I should Gesso the tile first. Very helpful. Thank you (
Wow. Not at all what i expected. I have a 15"x15" piece of plexiglass that i gessoed a month ago, thinking it is necessary if i want an enduring work of art. I've given it a few coats, sanding between applications, wanting to give my paint something to really grab a hold of. Now i am afraid it will be all for naught. I have to admit, i am progressing extremely slowly. It was just today i uncapped my first bottle of paint. Now i can only hope that i do not see results similar to your treated surface. But if i do, i will now have a better understanding as to why. My gesso is homemade using equal parts of Plaster of Paris, water and Elmer's school glue(actually a 31/31/38 ratio). But it does achieve a polished surface. Thank you very much for this informative video.
Hi thank you so much byour head must be up in the clouds with everyone loving you yes you make so easy for us what a great tutorial and I can't wait to get some tiles what size like for coasters and then I like to make a bigger one for like a spoon rest...I needed something instead of blooms n etc sorry so long but I short on time ha ha hope I'm not I'm 85 .and you used what starts with env??? For the finish coat. And I love your voice 🤩😍😍 thank you
What did you seal your tile with that you put your coffee cup on? Also I am wondering if a I could put a sticker on the tile after painting and sealing it. I very much enjoyed your you tube video on sealing and the painting tiles. Thank you
Very practical. Thank you. (I too have found it better to avoid a prepped surface, although I’m experimenting with oil based black lacquer. On tiles that is. I will pour over them and see how it works. They have dried overnight and look good.)
Great. I wonder too if some kind of a spray primer would work, although after months of using my coasters and seeing no ill effects, I don't even know if its really necessary.
Thanks a lot, Deby!
I love that you did this experiment. I was about to try gesso, but won’t now. I am seeing a lot of questions on here that I’d love to know an answer to. Are your replies on another site?
Thanks for testing that out for us.
Always my pleasure Kerr
Hello, how do you water seal your tiles? When you mentioned polycrylic, do you refer to Verathane or similar water based sealers, or Epoxy resins? Thanks in advance.
💖thank you 😊
This has been so helpful, thankyou, is the results the same for glass vases?
Hey Deby! First, I just love your bubblie personable demeanor and the creating testing you do. Thank you.
Question : Does your paint get real soft and peal off the tiles when submerged in warn water!
That was brilliant. I am just starting to do tiles. And I'm going going to do exactly what you done.i have mode poge to seal them.??
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE INFO....I TRIED TO PAINT ONE TIME ON TILES WITH ACRYLICS, IT WAS A NIGHTMARE, BUT I WILL TRY POURS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS......:)
Thanks for sharing, have you ever use alcohol inks on your ceramics coasters and then put resin on them.?thank you
Hi love your blog but could you tell me the right size is good for a coaster and a size for say a spoon rest to go go with the coasters. Please reply and thank you.😀😀😀😀😀
I think these products would be good to use with unglazed tiles. I may be finding out soon 😊
As always, your videos are so informative, and like someone else says, delivered with a great personality!
Can I paint an animal or bird directly onto a glazed tile with acrylics and then seal it with spray varnish. Will it stay permanently on there for framing? My other question is what do I use to draw a temporary outline ready for painting.
Great tutorial! Thank you. Now I'm curious about the sealing medium you use - what polycrylic brand do you use? Would it also work for a trivet (usually hotter dishes placed on it)?
Are the tiles glazed or unglazed tiles to begin with? Thank you!
love them!!! what colors did you use please!
does your coffee mug stick to the coaster you use by your laptop? Do you use it for both hot and cold drinks? Thanks for the information...
I love this color combination! Wondering, do you know what could coat something like this with so that it could be used as a trivet and be able to withstand heat from, say, a hot pan?
A good quick sanding with an electric sander will provide all the tooth needed for the paint to hold on to. A coat of gesso or that bonding medium on top and you're good to go.
I did gesso on a tile after sanding surface. Let dry for 2 weeks before using it in a pour. Soon as I put my white paint base on it started cracking. Lifted the gesso straight off. I ckeaned it off and ended up using without gesso.
Thank you so much for conducting these experiments for us to learn. This has been most informative. If you have a 'tip' jar, please direct me to it. I am not finding it. Again, thank you.
Thank you for clearing this up for us. I just got my first batch of tiles today and can't wait to start pouring on them. 1 question though. What would you say is the easiest and a good way to seal them if they are going to actually be used as coasters for both cold and hot beverages? I thought I heard you say "polycrylic"
Go back through Deby's videos -- she has a few where she's tested various finishes to see which ones work best for coasters.
I have quite a lot of testing in the past on sealing tiles for use as coasters and the results have been really mixed. Sometimes what works for me doesn't work for others and vice versa. The only reliable product so far has been resin.
Thank you so much✌🏻❤️❤️
Hello there! I have some marble coasters do you think it will be the same process? They’re glossy so I thought on sanding it first before the pouring. Any thoughts? Thanks for your videos!!
Hi Deby, I haven't seen you post anything lately. Hope all is well. Looking forward to seeing some creative pours in the future. Elaine Engle
I have a new UA-cam channel now Dennis. Not just pouring, but lots of other arts and crafts I've been meaning to try for a while now. Click on my photo to come and visit me and I hope you'll subscribe there too. Deby
Should the tiles be glossed or not glossed before you start?
Great info, do you think it reacted with the silicone?
No, it was certainly just the amount of paint and how long it stays wet. I've tried pouring without silicone and had the same results with gesso.
Do you use a satin, semi-gloss or high gloss polycrilic top coat? Just wondering which you find most appealing.
You said your coaster that you didnt prep and used the minwax ploy sealer, sits by your computer and you've used it for years. Which is awesome. But you said your coffee cup sits on it.
Then in a video I watched where you are testing the same sealer and 2 others. The hot coffee cup stuck to the tile?
So I'm very confused..I want to be able to set hot or cold on the coasters..
Maybe I miss understood, if you could please please let me know if it can ve use for either one. TIA
Hey Debby...I am hearing advice on the fb pages to let tiles cure for 30 days BEFORE applying varnish, then 30 days more before use...what is your take?
Thank you 💜
Very informative video. Can i ask what would be the best sealer to finish a tile
I have done a LOT of experiments and found that you simply cannot beat the finish you get with resin for sealing tiles and making them into useable coasters. I have a video here exactly on this which is ideal for beginners - ua-cam.com/video/pNGdrSJRYq0/v-deo.html
very neat, Thank you for sharing.
what do you have on the back of the tile to hold on to it ?
Theres nothing on the back, I'm just holding the edges.
Does the non prepped surface work as well with glossy ceramic tiles?
Buenos días consulta que sellador utilizar para proteger los azulejos ? Muchas gracias.
have you used un - glazed ceramic tiles ?
How would I go about putting a shiny finish on the final product and what do you recommend to use?
Do you wash off the silicone or Dymethicone with cornstarch before sealing the tile?
What do you seal your tiles with?
Thank you. I have an old tan tile I want to update.
Did I hear you say " leave it a month " around :40 ? Leave the primed one alone for a month or the finished tile ?
Did the mediums keep the paint from scratching off the other two tiles? Just wondering because the ridges would maybe look cool under resin.
Now, I didn't think to even check that because the surface was already puckered. Yes the texture could be interesting but I'd be concerned that the product underneath had already lifted and therefore the original bond with the tile was lost. I couldn't say how hardwearing it might be and sadly they went in the trash so I can't give them the scratch and see test now.
I've been toying with this idea.... Mounting some of the tiles in different sizes to some MDF for a collage. Maybe with multicolored grout. Or that resisand stuff Annemarie was talking about? Not sure what I'll use. Or even when. Just ideas in my brain popping up randomly.
son hermosos 👍👍👍
Im sorry, did you say wait a month? For plain tiles before putting a finishing product on...
