  • ********. PLEASE READ*****
    When I made this video OVER A YEAR AGO I was not mixing my white according to the ratio I mention - and I also was not measuring when using the small Dixie cups.
    Please note - I have since changed the way I do things.
    THE WHITE BASE PAINT IS NOW MEASURED THE SAME WAY I MEASURE MY COLOURED PAINT. ALL PAINTS MUST BE THE SAME CONSISTENCY
    I also now measure my small cups as well - they also get water as well. I simply cut down the amount of grams I put in the cups.
    So for 2 Oz Dixie cup I use 10 g floetrol 5 g paint and about 4g water
    Video posted on June 7, 2019
    Hello everyone!!
    Thanks for joining me today!
    I have had so many people asking me about my paints, how I mix them and what my ratio is.
    I still don't use a ratio for my small 2oz cups when I am pouring, however, now that I have the large 6oz squeeze bottles, I figured it was time to come up with a ratio (one, that works for me)

    For those who keep going back to this video (like myself), here's a quick list of the measurements!
    Floetrol = 3 oz/80g
    Paint = 1 oz/40g
    Water = 1 oz/30g
    But DEFINITELY watch the rest of the video, I love watching Kanella and she gives amazing tips!

      Synethesia wouldn’t the paint ratio 1.5 oz since it is half the floetrol amount?

    • @KodyK2024

      If the grams are on a scale then isn’t that by weight? Ounces would be liquid volume. Now I’ve confused myself. 😂

    • @quikscot1528
      @quikscot1528 4 роки тому +5

      @@KodyK2024 Yes Cindy, it can be confusing. You are correctly identifying that there is a difference between a fluid ounce - a measurement of volume - and an avoirdupois ounce - an ounce of weight. These two are NOT the same, so should not be mixed in this formula. There are 128 fluid ounces in a gallon and 16 weight ounces in a pound. It all depends on whether you are measuring a liquid or not - or your basis for measuring in any given situation. Stick with the same basis as is provided and simply keep the ratios right. Because Kanella's example is using weight - she has everything measured on the scale - her weight formula is grams or weight ounces in the appropriate ratio of 8 to 4 to 3 for Floetrol, paint and water. Scales weigh weight ounces; measuring cups weigh fluid ounces. Hope this helps.

    YEAH!!!!!! I 've been looking online for days trying to find someone to explain the radio for floetrol and acrylic painting. Everybody just starts talking about how to do the chain pulling. but say Nothing about the paint needing something called floetrol. i'm new to painting and don't know what floetrol even was. Thank You so much!!!!! and you also explain everything calm and clear.

    Great video! Just had a revelation on paint mixing. Weighing the paint, takes out the variable of whether the paint is thin or thick right from the bottle or tube. Measuring by liquid volume doesn’t. If you are weighing the paint, I don’t think it matters if you’re using grams or ounces if you are using the same ratio, but measuring by liquid volume would not be the same as weighing in ounces if the paints are of different consistency straight from the tube or bottle. This new insight might solve many of my pouring issues!

    I like using those bottles also. To help with mixing I drop a glass marble into the bottles so as the paint settles the marble helps very much. I also prefer to use distilled water to prevent the paint/water from molding. Thanks for all the wonderful information in your videos.

    You are so awesome to explain all this for us. When I started mixing, I made large batches of floetrol and water. Basically the ratio is 73% floetrol to 27% water. Then when you add that to paint it's 73.3% floetrol and water mix to 26.7% paint. You can round that off really. Then you can put that in any size you want. I figured out measurements for any size bottle or cup if anyone needs it. It works great! Now I just need to work on my technique. 😁

    Thanks so much for sharing your ratios this is much appreciated. Ì must share my paint history with you! I started painting about 15 years ago and had a few successes but haven't done much for a long time but my plastic tubs of oft mixed 'special' colours have been with me all this time. I recently took up pouring and thought I can't waste this paint so did all my practicing with it...and after all this time! The colours are still vibrant, I had to thin them a little but I got some very pretty pours from my collection of spice tub 15 year old paint! Ive been quite a prolific Polystyrene artist and the tubs have kept perfectly all this time. The dried pour items are perfectly plastic and I can almost guarantee that the paints will not spoil. I'm 65 with first hand experience of the incredible longevity of acrylic paints and no doubt the new paints on the market should be even better. I just thought I'd share that with you, thanks for all your spectacular inspiration, your artworks are amazing. Love from South Africa 💖💖💌

    This was extremely helpful to me. I've seen so many video's showing different pouring mediums and flotrol paint combo's that I'm dizzy and confused as to what to use in my paints. Some say use a pouring medium plus flotrol plus paint plus water but I thought flotrol was a pouring medium. Thanks Kanella for your thorough explanation ✅✅✅
    I live in Australia 🇦🇺 and say hi to all.
    This is the best recipe mix to ratio explanation I have come across.
    My suggestion tip:
    I save used hair colour and bleach “peroxide bottles” for storing my paint recipes in..
    I always mix my hair colour in a bowl so the bottles are left clean and I just wash and rinse them thoroughly, then after drying store them away.
    Most have the measurement levels marked down the side on them and they are designed to mix & shake with absolutely no spillages.
    The caps are either twist and turn or screw ons and best of all they are FREE 😍..

A couple of marbles in the bottle helps with the shaking too and pencil top erasers as a backup for when you will inevitably lose the cap that comes with the bottle😝.

    Thank you so much for doing this! I'm new to fluid painting - a gift to myself for surviving 2020! I'm struggling with Dutch pours - I'm getting too much lacing, and not getting the beautiful bloom effect that you get. I've not yet had the guts to mix a whole bottle of color, though and I suspect that consistency might come in mixing a larger quantity of paint? Just got some LOLI VEFI bottles so I'm ready to roll now. Question: Do you adjust the formula with varying thicknesses of paint - Golden paints seem so much thicker, Deco Art seems so much thinner, mostly I use A. Loft and Arteza, but even those are not the same.

    Great tutorial! Am I the only cheapskate that cuts the tube of paint to get every last bit of paint? Lord, I hope not. I pay for that paint, I’m gonna get as much as I can out of the tube. Food for thought 💭. Still love your art, regardless 😊

    I have one question. The explanation of how you mix your paint was great. The next time you do a dutch pour could you please show the consistency of your white that you flood the canvas with and pour around the colors.. Thanks.

      Hi Evelyn - I know in this video i said i 'eyeball' my white - but I actually now MEASURE my white lol
      exact same ratios as the coloured paints. I learned the hard way that eyeballing doesn't always work lol

      Thank you. I wrote down your formula for measuring and will follow it to a tea. I haven't been measuring either and found it isn't a really good idea. LOL

      Agree. I tried eye balling it, I tried following others measurements and use exact same product and found my paint would not move ..

    Hi: Just wondering is the ratio still as shown in using liquid paint vs. tube paint. So if using 40gms of tube paint, would I use 40 gms of liquid paint? Love your videos

    • @srtss5056
      @srtss5056 3 роки тому +1

      I was wondering the same thing. I'm guessing not since the "ready to pour" pouring paint is "ready to pour" lol and is already watered down some. So does somebody, anybody 🤷‍♀️ know the ratio for that vs the concentrated tubes of paint.???? Thanks!

      I’ve asked Kanella this same question!! She uses a few grams less of the heavy body paint and the rest of the ratios remain the same! Hope this is helpful.
      Also with the fluid paints I would use less also

    Hi Kanella
    Just rewatching your mixing video & was wondering if you did do a drip test on a consistency chart what does your paint run rate on the scale on the chart.
    I absolutely love your work & I’m just wondering if you could let know as all paints are different.
    Many Thanks
    Michele 😊

    Thanks for this video, it was very helpful. There is an artist on UA-cam, Ann Osborne, she uses white house paint for flooding her canvas. She mentions the brand but she's in the US so I don't recognize it. I guess its a cheaper way to do it, what do you think of that idea?
    I like her work.

      suzanne magnus thanks Suzanne. Yes, I’ve seen many artists use house paint as well. Not sure the brand really matters. But yes, house paint is definitely a cheaper option.

    Your son was so cute peeking up from the couch!! Awesome video but that definitely made it that much better!! He made me giggle! I have 3 boys and they crack me up so I loved that!!
    Thanks for this and for ur message in the description. I have referenced your videos a ton for ideas and advice on what to do. I am definitely a beginner with all this and am doing these things with my sons, 7 and 13, for fun and bonding, they enjoy it a ton. My third is still just a babe so washable (edible) finger paints for him still (like icing ;) lol). I appreciate you sharing your ratios. Wish me luck on trying them out on our first blow pours. We've only done flip cups so far. I am excited to try a blow pour (or whatever it's called) soon!! I think those are just gorgeous. First one I ever saw was from one of your videos of you doing two canvases and they were just stunning. I can't wait to try one for myself!! I know my boys will be excited too! Have a wonderful day!

Thank you so much for giving us all some truly useful info. Also, I loved seeing your son in the background. You are so cute, Kanella. You have this friendly, easy-to-listen-to vibe in all your videos, and you seem to have that something that Chip and Joanna Gaines have that makes people come back for more.
