@@kayemni Totally untrue ! Go to Eastern Somaliland the largest province Sool region you can't carry Somaliland flag even ! A big war took place which Somaliland government lost and now the province declared independence from Somaliland and wants to join Somalia. That little middle part of Somaliland capital can't form a country, and even that part is divided .
Regional countries you talk about are all backed by the west as proxy ! As you can see the big proof now with Trump showing who is behind them . I support this move. They just finished their 6th presidential election and have govorned themselves. Open to hear other perspectives though. Cheers
Yeah, there are risks of inspiring other less well thought out and stable regions to do the same thing, but I don't see why that should be used to deny Somaliland statehood. Its just a challenge that has to be worked though.
My biggest concern is that if the UK, US, EU, UAE ect are only interested in recognising Somaliland as a strategic position, to set up military bases ect, that that is a bad idea on the Wests part. Heavy American presence isnt always in the best interest of the regions.
That being said, Somaliland wholeheartedly deserve their independence. They just have to be careful to not sign away too much autonomy in an effort to gain recognition.
They have committed massacres against minority groups who disagree with their secession and don't want to be part of Somaliland. There have also been reports of political intimidation and kidnappings of those who criticise their government - like many other authoritarian regimes who feign democracy

Personally I think Somaliland getting recognized is a great thing.
I constantly hear how Africa is in a bad state because of the remanants of colonialism, drawing general borders without any consideration about the ethnic makeup of those areas.
The recognition of Somaliland would be a step in the direction of fixing those arbitrary borders.
If it succeeds (which is likely considering they've been basically autonomous for years now) it shows that this is the way to fix these problems.
If it fails it at least dispels the mith that borders where the real issue why Africa is stuck in the past.
Also let's remember that Egypt is now trying to use Somaliland as a kudgel to beat Ethyopia with in the discussion of water rights. Removing it from the equation will force Egypt to stop treating the Nile as if it was it's personal property despite them holding only a small part of its tail end.

The people of the republic of Somaliland regained their freedom not independence in 1991 as Somaliland is a de jure country that gained its independence on June 26 1960 as the first East African country to do so. The government of the republic of Somalia and Mogadiscio control over Somaliland was never “de jure” or legal. The union was never ratified, the constitution was rigged by the Italians who not only were the ones that wrote it but certified the referendum of 1961. The coup of 1969 only solidified the reality that Somaliland was under occupation
There was always feeling of disenchantment that would lead to the 1961 attempt by the Somaliland camel corps, the occasional riots and the demand for freedom was consistent.
Small correction for the next editorial: Ilhan Omar is in the house, not the senate.
Being a peaceful state within an already problematic country, i see no reason why Somaliland should not be an indepedent country.

If you're going to recognize Somaliland, then you have to recognize Puntland. Puntland has no border disputes, no drama, no issues internally or externally and we've had a democratically elected gov't as well.

To be honest, somaliland recognition will have a ripple effect in the horn of africa. And more states will fight for own ethnic countries independence. Which is good thing. Africa in general is a mess
Can't believe I agree with trump on something. Oh well.
The US and Europe already opened the Pandora's box of recognizing unilateral recognitions of independence when they decided to recognize Kosovo in 2008. This would later inspire Russia to recognize Abkhazia and North Ossetia in the same year. But even this was not truly unprecedented because Turkey had already recognized the TRNC in 1983 and the annexation of the Golan Heights by Israel in 1981. International law and territorial integrity is only valuable so far as it suits one country or block interests.
It makes absolutely no sense to support colonial borders that are the cause of instability and ethnic conflicts in the name of stability…. Somaliland should be recognized
Ironic because Somaliland themselves want to be recognised based on colonial borders
As somalilander, we will get our much deserved recognition sooner or later. Remember, we waited 34yrs and we will wait as long as it takes.

if trump does this then I will give him respect, awful human being but maybe he has a heart somewhere
4:46 This doesn't sound like something a representative of the American people would or should say.
I really hope that Somaliland gets independence - plus, I do not think Somalia would even be able to prevent this from happening given the state their are in (failed state).
If this is going to happen then I can see Somaliland growing to become a fairly well off country in terms of economy, safety and quality of life. Especially because they can act as a port of trade for Ethiopia and, possibly, as a base for US naval operations in the Middle East (especially against Yemen) so it will likely attract investment from both the US and Arab states.
People on the left largely support somaliland. In fact, I view the tradition of the international community not recognizing nations that exist outside of arbitrary colonial borders as both absurd and a means for many actors to hold onto power at the expense of many.
By that last part i mean that Cameroon might not want to recognize Somaliland, because if they do, it sets a precedent that could allow their own separatist groups to become independent. Therefore, Cameroon opposes recognizing separatist nations as a whole.
They deserve recognition
Somaliland is one of the few countries that recognizes Taiwan. China will no doubt try to change.
Like how he chuckled a bit a bit after 4:05.
Every nation deserves freedom, including Somaliland. I am a young man, hope I will see Somaliland being recognized internationally in my lifetime.
When do a people become a sovereign "nation" that deserve independence? Would you say African Americans are a nation that deserve to be sovereign?
This is one single thing I agree with Trump and Farage on. Literally nothing else.
It is not possible to recognize Somaliland as a country, because all other Somali states may declare independence which is not good idea.
Recognition in a civil war kind of cements a civil war. There has always been neutral breakaways states that are expected to be gobbled up by the battle hardened victors peacefully or by force.
Character on Family Guy: I'm a Family Guy
TLDR presenter: "the TLDR is...."
4:47 So she's not american ? She's somali ? conflict of interest
no non-whites in america are really "american". america is a white settler-colonialist project
4:32 Minor correction but Omar is a Representative, not a Senator.
So in the course of 100 years, it's gone from claiming land to recognising land.
We need to remember Trump has that "do the opposite of whatever senate progressives want" card 😅
Still, nice to see the card producing positive results in this instance
somalia only holds somaliland back
4:06 Ben struggled to say that with a straight face and so would I cause lmao of course Gavin would suggest that, perfectly normal thing to do
Nah, they should be granted recognition instead of waiting for some utopian perfect time that will never come, Africa being Africa. And whether they recognize it or not, 'instability' is Africa's second name, it has nothing to do with a de facto independent country being finally recognized as such.
I don't understand how this is happening but this seems to be a right wing policy that I don't disagree with. What's going on here? This feels wrong...
The only way Trump would recognize it would be calling it "Not-a-Shithole-astan".
Only speculating here: this could be a thumb on the scales for forcing Somalia into getting its affairs in order, or get a resolution with the Red Sea flashzone that is the Bab-el-Mandeb
Its been well over 30 years, what makes you think they can get "affairs in order " now?. Its paper government thats been prompt up my the international community.
@@Nicholas808-1 I'm not in disagreement, but the feuds have to be solved and something functional has to be there. Mind Türkiye has interest in stabilizing the coastline, so even more reason to hope for a resolution.
@@CyrusBluebird I don't mean to be rude but there have been much greater power than Türkiye who have poured billions into Somalia and little to show for it. What makes you think they can?. Also with whats happening in their backyard, I think Türkiye should it gets priorities right.
