So what happened, Peter? Belgium didn't "go down" from debt as you predicted. Neither did Austria nor Spain.

    • @RJStockton

They finally formed a government and raised taxes. Minor austerity and plenty of foreign holdings helped insulate Belgium in ways that other EU countries generally don't enjoy. Belgium has also struck a deal with the EU that essentially allowed it to dip into the common fund as needed to shore up sovereign debt.
Most of the country's foreign debt, meanwhile, was held by parties that were also partly owned by Belgian citizens and companies, giving them leverage in negotiations. Belgians also carry very little personal debt in the private sector, relative to the Netherlands and other mortgage-heavy societies, which means there's a lot of fat on the bone in Belgium that buffers against crisis.
"Analysts" usually project the things they see coming as happening way faster than they actually happen in reality. Remember that there is always a team of smart people trying to prevent whatever terrible thing you've predicted happening. I just double any timeline I hear from an otherwise reliable source.
