- Happy Posthumous Birthday to Paul Goddard who was born on this date in 1945 and who passed away in April of 2014. Paul was well known for playing Rickenbacker basses, but I won't hold that against him.
"Spooky" by Atlanta Rhythm Section off of their "Underdog" album which came out in 1979 and featured Paul Goddard on bass. The song is actually a remake. The first version was an instrumental. The second was recorded by the band "Classics IV" (which had a member or two from ARS in the band). And the third was by "Atlanta Rhythm Section".
This one is a few years old. I'm playing the Spector NS2A through a SansAmp Para-Driver. This was the first Spector bass that I got and the one that started my interest in Spectors.
Good one TJ. This is a track I would not think would be a "showcase" cover. It's been called on pickup gigs and I played it with the attitude of "Okay, E to A...got it). But the little fills and rhythmic variances make it a well constructed track. The little bit of growl you give it is a nice touch as well.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to find some value in this song. Take care.
What a great song. Great guitar solos. People don't put ARS up on the same high pedestals as they do Allman Brothers and Skynyrd, but they were a stellar band - in the studio and live.
It is a pretty cool song, isn't it? To be honest, I'm not really familiar with much of their material aside from this song and their other big hit (I can't think of the name).
I don’t know how “big” they were in upstate NY, but they were all over Midwest radio in the late 70s, 1980, 81 (when Molly Hatchet and 38 Special took over). I guess their hits fall under the “Yacht Rock” banner now.
This made me smile: "Paul was well known for playing Rickenbacker basses." Ha. Thanks - well performed.
Troy-You wrong for that! 😂
The classics IV version always reminds me of the movie Fandango. Love this song.
I've never seen it. How's it going Cid?
Great job, Troy. Love ARS. Spooky was a favorite of mine to play in a previous band.
Thank you. Very cool!
Troy, this was always one of my favorite bass lines to play with my old band. Thanks for covering this gem!
My band hired a sound guy. Spooky was in our set, and we took it out after the sound guy explained how other bands played it--in great detail. He knew all the different spins bands put on it and it just kind of ruined the song. But I like hearing Troy play it! (I play keyboard, not bass, btw.)
Very cool! I'm glad you liked it.
Great song!🎶🎤👍 & a great job T.🎶🎸👍
Thanks!
Fun song, I play this with my band! Nice job, as always!
Very cool! Thanks!
Also my first Spector was a white NS-2A from 87? Bought it in 1995 when I was 23. Wish I still had it. Replaced with a real Woodstocl NS-2. Love the feel and playability.
Very cool! Can I ask you, did you feel that there was a dramatic jump in value (quality, tone, playability…) between the NS2A and the NS2?
Great rendition Troy.. Played this a few times in a couple of bands… Well done👍👍
Many thanks!
That sounded real nice.
Perfect tone.
Thank you kindly!
well now, i was overplaying this song all along..good job
Well that's a good thing. Thank you.
Superb work as always.
Thanks again!
Good job. Thank you for this cover. ;-)
Glad you liked it!
Nice Job, Troy! Long time fan.
Thank you! Nice to hear from you.
First Class as Always
Thanks again!
love it
Great to hear!
Excellent cover! i happen to have the same bass, i love it👍
Thank you. Very nice! I sold this one, but kept a Teal NS2A, as well as my Legend Classic and Pulse. Sold my more expensive Spectors.
Very nice 🎸
Thank you Art!
Oh, I loved ARS back in the day! Thanks for a happy memory, Troy. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Love this one!
Glad to hear it!
Such a smooth bassline and tone Troy! Excellent playing 🤘
Thanks a lot!
I expected the bass to be spooky but it was just good
Haha... thanks
Great job, Troy! Nice sound and playing.
Thank you kindly!
@TJH3113 I look forward to your videos weekly. No doubt, It is one of the best channels online.
Fantastic, always loved the song but never learned the bass part, guess it's time!
Thanks so much.
Love those Spector basses! I still have my USA 88' NS-2O(oil finish). The original import Haz-Lab preamp was okay but I had a current day US pre-amp installed and it sounds just like an NS-2. Great cover as always Troy.
Me too. This has the K-HAZ clone which, I think, sounds as good as the US HAZ. I've got a US HAZ in the two p/u MBJ bass. The MightyMite clones also sound really good. As I started climbing the quality/price ladder on these basses I came to believe that these basses are the best value. I really don't think I'd be getting a lot more out of a $5,000+ US model. Thank you very much!
@@TJH3113 My NS-2O was just $2K.
So nice!
Glad you like it!
thanks man!
It was my pleasure!
❤
Thanks, Cindy
This is awesome, what a cool bassline!! Atlanta Rhythm Section is one of my dad's favorite bands, we listen to them a lot in the car on roadtrips.
Thanks! Awesome!
that brings back some memories, played that one many times....👍👍
I hear you.
Top notch job covering this classic line.Great tone as always with that PJ bass.
Thank you very much!
👍Yummy lol. I'm loving that laid back groove. Though it's an older song it sounds very up to date. Thanks for the inspiration today. Hey have you seen Ellen Play Bass? I can't believe how good that little girl is!!
Glad you liked it! I was actually surprised to learn that it came out in 1979! I'd have thought it was early-70's. I have seen Ellen, but don't go out of my way to watch her. Of course, she's very good, but she seems to have started off with A LOT of advantages. There's nothing wrong with that and I'm not a hater, but I think she's got enough admirers without me.
YAY GOOD SONG
I'M GLAD YOU LIKED IT.
Great cover Troy!!
Top Man!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Great right hand!!
Proper Bass player
Great job, MASTER PLEASE .. FEEL ALRIGHT GRAND FUNK
Thanks so much! I'll check it out, thanks for the suggestion.
Bravoo 👏👏
Thank you
Playing ‘Spooky’ on a Spector. 😁Very punny.
Haha!!
I was thinking the same thing.
Yes!!!
Thanks!!!
Specters are beautiful basses but I could never get used to that skinny body style. They sound so great, though, and their finishes and build quality is usually top notch.
Fair enough!
I've been playing along to the Dusty Springfield version. Very different from this, and very fun to play.
I didn't know she did this as well. I'll have to check it out.
It's part of the "Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels" soundtrack
Sounding great! ARS was such a a great band,RIP Paul Goddard. Maybe cover Champagne Jam in the future?
Thank you! I'll check it out.
Great job,how about the ARS song Another man's woman with the bass solo. That would be worthy of your bass skills.Seen ARS back in the day prolly at least 100 times as i hail from the Peach state.....
Thank you. I'll check it out!
@@TJH3113 Your welcome Sir.
Covering hometown heroes Mr Troy
Very cool!
👍🤘🇧🇷
Thank you!
awesome cover, you should do a song called hand of doom by black sabbath
Thank you. I'll check it out.
Great job Troy,
So i clearly remember 2 versions of this for some reason. Heck that was in the 70s. Have a great Sunday brother.
Yes, but there was a member (or two) in the first band who wrote it, who went on to form ARS. Not sure about the original, instrumental version
@TJH3113 thanks for that information, it's just been so long....... oh m👴
Nice! Standard tuning?
Thanks! Yes, concert pitch (as I remember)
What are your thoughts on the playability of the Spector?
I think they are very comfortable to play and I've had no issues with any of them... and I'm traditionally not a p/j guy.
@@TJH3113 that's what I've heard. P/J is a real versatile bass. And it's a reverse P as well. It just depends on what tones you are trying to create. Does the reverse P help even out the tone?
@@rickrolli7091 I was talking more about plucking over a P/J configuration. I was more comfortable playing over humbuckers and wider pick ups. I think that the reverse P configuration has a huge impact on the sound. Joe is building me one more bass that will be a single, reverse precision pick-up pushed back a bit towards the bridge.
@@TJH3113 playing over humbucker are nice because you have more space to pant your thumb for different tones. that's cool on your custom bass. You'll have to do a video of it.
My band covers the Dusty Springfield version, totally different key and more laid back than this version.
Very cool!
