- "Watching the Wheels" was the final single released off the album (in the US) on this date in 1981, just a little over three months after he was killed, on December 8th, 1980.
"Watching the Wheels" by John Lennon off of his "Double Fantasy" album which came out in November of 1980 and featured Tony Levin on bass.
I'm playing the "retro version" Double-Bit bass that was built for me by Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars - www.mbjguitars...
Tony Levin's career absolutely blows my mind!!! From Buddy Rich, to John Lennon, and onto King Crimson, then his legendary run of genius creations with Peter Gabriel, WOW!!! You've got to be kidding me!🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Well done, Troy! Beautiful tone as always. This song also wasn't on my radar, thanks for featuring it.
Don’t forget his stint with Paul Simon.
I finally got to see him with Peter Gabriel last September. It was a bucket-list show and the most expensive tickets I've ever bought. I also got to see him right up the road from my house a few years back at a local club with "The Levin Brothers". He and his brother played smooth jazz versions of classic rock songs. Thanks and take care! I hope all is well with you and your family.
This tune AND time in history is tattooed on my Soul Troy. Happened three days after my birthday back in Dec. of '80. I was watching that fatefull Monday Night Football game when Howard Cosell spoke that John Lennon had just been shot and had died. I had three Idols growing up as a military dependent. Cassius Clay (Ali) Elvis Presley and John Lennon. Took me a long time to grieve about Lennon though. Was a newlywed with a new Son and new life and suddenly I became my Parents in many ways! I have always appreciated the message of this tune. Let's just say I took a lot from the words which sounded eerily familiar at that particular time of my young life. I'm glad you plucked this one out to play! MOO From COW-lumbus, Ohio 👋
I remember that day clearly as well. I was in High School and a guy I used to hang out on the side of the building with... a really big guy who looked pretty menacing, was standing there crying. When I asked him why, he told me. Even though I didn't really understand his grief at the time, I liked him even more after that.
Another great bassline by Tony Levin.
Truth!
Love that Tony didn't play the notes right on the first beat in the chorus bars, instead leaving an eight note pause. Almost felt like a reggae bassline. Brilliant bass writing!
It's definitely ear candy. It is the most memorable part of the song for me.
Yes... very cool indeed!
Great observation, @kennet7837.
Got another suggestion for you.
Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians “What I am.”
Nice bass line.
I’ll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
That's a great bass line. Well played as always. I read somewhere that Lennon asked Tony Levin to write the bass part and "make sure it doesn't sound like Paul McCartney"...eek! :D
It really is an original line, isn't it? Thanks so much. Wow, that's a tall order!
I saw the the title and thought, "Ah, some Grace Under Pressure', and that first note hit, an d whoah'ed things down. This is not Between the Wheels. lolz. Crazy bass line. Wicked rendition.
Ha ha! Thanks a lot.
Wow! Awesome job as usual Troy. Beautiful song and perfect bass line. What a shame we lost this guy to senseless violence. Anyway, keep doing what you do Brother!
Thank you Sam. Yes, that was a tragic loss.
always love this song and album , well JL songs not YO.....i picked up this song a couple months ago on bass and was just as intrigued at how much fun i was having playing it
Very cool! It really is a lot of fun, isn’t it?
I appreciate your attention to detail. I feel like you strive to give the genuine recording version instead of the over embellished version.
Thank you very much. What you described is exactly what I've always strived to do. I try to play the songs as closely to the way they were recorded as I can.
Spot on as usual, Troy. There's a great interview with Jack Douglas that popped up recently on another YT channel, and the 2 parts were mostly about producing this album. Lots of behind the scenes and as we all feel, the great loss of a giant.
Sorry, haven't been around lately, so hard to keep up with all the channels sometimes lol Hope you guys are well!
Thanks so much. I'll have to look that up.
No worries, nice to see you!
Bass line in reggae chorus. Tony Levin is great. Thank's
Yeah, very unique!
Of course its a good bass line.
He was a BEATLE for christ sakes lol
Awsome job yet agin.
Tony Levin was a Beatle?
Thank you very much.
LOL No John was .So he would not have a slouch bass player lol.@@TJH3113
Always Troy! And after going back and listening to Woman again, watching the wheels go bye was a better choice!😊cheers!
Right on! I'll check it out anyway.
You’re very cool brudda! Cheers!
Awesome! One of the saddest days of my life is when John left this world. This song brings tears to my eyes. Great cover as usual. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Yes, his death effected so many people very deeply.
✌️John Lennon✌️
9 Dream by Lennon is simple but fun to play
I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Man this is such a cool bass line i really like it it has such sweetness to it those slides are magical
I think so too!
Classic song where the Bass did shine manage to get through the original mix. Great cover Troy, i think all your covers are great to be honest...
Many thanks!!
Oh wow loved this. Has a bit of a playful nature to it. I never knew that was Tony L!! Such a strange synchronicity two days ago I was thinking about him and suddenly the last few days his music keeps popping up lol.😄👍🌠
Glad you enjoyed it! it was really a lot of fun to learn and to play. It’s hard to believe that Tony has been around for that long.
another great cover. thanks, Troy.
can you please cover "Holding On To Yesterday" by Ambrosia some day? 💙
Thank you. I’ll check it out.
The piano in this is pretty wild, too.
It is, isn’t it?🎹
This caught me off guard. I love this song. Great job! Thank you.
Awesome! I’m glad you liked it, thanks a lot.
I gave this album to a friend a couple of weeks ago. I can't listen to it anymore, breaks my heart!
Understandable. John Lennon meant a lot to a lot of people.
Did you ever notice how similar "Starting Over" is to the verses in Guess Who "Laughing"... ? Even that song makes me sad! (because it makes me think of Lennon 1980) ua-cam.com/video/5MyeHH5uJzY/v-deo.htmlsi=uiLQZwHkBRJ7uYtx @@TJH3113
Hey Troy, long time since I responded. WOW mind blowing accuracy on this one BIC. You play with such emphasis if you will, it like surgical with pin point bullseye in the striking of every stroke. I got my Glary and I cannot remember last time I played, it seems I am just constantly busy, wife has not been feeling well, I don't let her or my 32 yo son in the kitchen, and with WFH and church and trying to get my fam business going I just never sit down and relax it seems. I would still love to buy one of your Geetars if you would be interested. I am really bummed out I had a 1984 spiral notebook with hand written drawings of the fingerboard and number and notes from Dean Norris that was teaching me BITD and after all these years I thought they we in a box we moved and I made an effort to find it and I cannot, it really sucks, I have a Mel Bay Bass Book somewhere but I cannot seem to get the groove w/o the backbone of the way I remembered. Well Good Lord winning I will be 62 on 7/21 AND 35 yrs wed on that day and I home eventually to get my Business up and maybe find some time to get into it.
Peace, Love, and May God’s Blessings be with you and Yours Always
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. Oh boy, I really do hope you find the time to do some of the things you really WANT to do. I wouldn't worry too much about the missing notebook, just try to learn some of the songs you love and nature will take its course. Take care and be well!
Great playing on a great tune from a great album...
half an album :)
Thanks!
Tony Levin played bass on the album? Didn’t Know that. Great stuff Troy 🎸
That’s wild, isn’t it?
Your next challenge is to tape drumsticks to your fingers and so some of Levin’s PG work! 😂
We’ll see about that.
Beautiful song. Also love that bass look and sound. Which brand?
I think so too. Thanks, it was made by Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars.
Lennon liked C major.
Is that true?
This is so beautiful! Tony Levin is an amazing bassist, I don't think I've ever heard him play on a bad song.
Yes, Tony is certainly one of the greats.
Hi Troy, great song choice - and playing as usual. When played against the isolated track it sounds like there is a tiny bit of chorusing going on. I don't hear it against the full track but I wonder was Lennon's piano not quite tuned to concert pitch and Tony Levin adjusted for it?
Thank you very much. The chorusing you're hearing might be the two basses (his and mine) playing together.
Bass is the soul of band...and this is coming from a drummer. 😂 The sound makes me feel warm and fuzzy. 😉
Very cool to hear that coming from a drummer. Take care!
This bass line adds so much to this song! Tony is a genius! Extremely well played Troy 🤘
It really does, doesn’t it? Truth! Thank you.
When I want to learn a difficult song, I come here in hopes that you have covered it. Keep on rockin brother!
Thanks so much for the vote of confidence! Take care!
You make that bass resonate at its peak ability.
Sounds really nice !
Glad you like it! Thanks!
Great choice and great job! I would’ve chose woman! lol
Thanks a lot! I’ll check it out.
Que buen tema has escogido está vez! Y ese bajo suena genial! Bueno, tu lo haces sonar 💯
¡Muchas gracias Roberto!
What an honor for Tony to be asked to play bass for John Lennon. Thanks Troy!
Right? Supposedly, the whole recording of the album was kept top-secret, because John Lennon wanted to be able to pull the plug on it at any moment, because he wasn’t sure if he could come up with something he thought was worthy of releasing.
That's a sweet bass!! Great song and great playing!!
Thank you very much!
I always love this song!!... wwaaaaahoo.. good vibes
Awesome!
One of those songs that you wished was 10 minutes longer
Truth.
Thank you so much for looking into this one! It made my day! As usual, you did such a great job on it. All the best to you and yours 😊
Thank you. I’m really glad you liked it!
Oops, had to come back and give this a thumb up.
No worries... thanks.
Thank you Troy! for taking the time to reply!
Any time! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment. Take care!
Request for Roxy Music - Out of the Blue. Love all you do!
I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion. Alan Spenner played with them at some point, didn't he?
@@TJH3113
Alan Spenner sure did! Roxy Music used a lot of extra musicians from 1978-1983....Spenner is credited on some tracks, but not all.
No one has done a bass cover of the studio track, and the one extant YT bass cover is from a live track.
ua-cam.com/video/72y6EqdGUp4/v-deo.htmlsi=7My4T9wLPpQghq_J
It looks to be one of the more challenging bass covers I have seen played....
Awesome song and that tone is Killa!
I’m glad you liked it!
Had no idea Tony played on this song.
That’s so cool, isn’t it?
Just Wonderful!!!
Thank you!!!
Always interesting 😊
Glad you think so! Thanks, Jean Marie.
Nice! I had this on vinyl.
Thanks! Cool!
Yup, nailed it.
Thanks!
Great cover & what a cool looking bass, like some sort of battle axe!
Thanks a lot!
sounds very good
Thank you
What a tasty bass line.
I thought so too.
Good job Troy!
Thank you Peter!
Wow, great 👍🏼
Thank you 👍
Very clear.
Thank you.
Awesome job! As always, great tone. One of my favorite Lennon solo songs.
I still remember when I heard the news. We'll never know what other great music he would have shared with the world. 😞
Thank you very much, I’m glad you liked it. I remember that day as well.
Love it…
Thanks Joe.
Nice cover. Thank you for the discovery.
Thank you very much.
Awesome as usual! Love this song.
Thank you, kindly. Great to hear.
