I Just Wanna Stop Bass Cover

- "I Just Wanna Stop" by Gino Vannelli off of his 'Brother to Brother' album which came out in 1978 and, according to Wikipedia, featured Leon Gaer on "synthesized electric bass". It doesn't sound like synth-bass to me, but I understand that Gino Vannelli had great production values on his albums.
The Rush song that Harry suggested to me was "Bacchus Plateau", not "No One At The Bridge".
I'm playing the $199 bass with the $300 neck (Ibanez Talman TMB-100) through a SansAmp Para-Driver.
Gino Vanelli is one of our most excellent Canadian musicians with lots of hit songs to his credit. He apparently used Jimmy Haslip for a number of his recordings. I still have quite a few of his vinyl albums but they are in storage. Another tasty cover Troy! Happy Friday.
There seems to be a lot of love for Gino here! I'm glad you liked it.
So many great Gino Vanelli songs. You selected one of the best. Thanks for showing us how to play it. Cheers
Many thanks Constantine!!
OMG lol. I've alwasy liked this song but didn't realize who it was. It alwasy made me think of ToTo or Little River Band. What a sweet little bass line and of course delivered so nicely and only in the way you can 😉🙃👍👍
Now you know! He's got some amazing prog/jazz-fusion style stuff, but you'd never guess that from this song. Thanks Nicci!
Whoa...Me and my gal back in the day would sit on a sofa ( or couch depending on your Zip Code 🤣) and enjoy "Couple Tunes" as I called them on Saturday Nights after we got the kids squared away in their beds! Gino was always on our playlist too! Your Talman is stunning in sound AND price too! I have found through the years that a few of the cheaper bass models I played with sounded better and felt better than a "Named Brand" Ax! I have actually heard about Ibanez's parts and instruments policy and their plan is as strict as what Rolex does with their Watches that are sent back for repair! The caveat is that Rolex KEEPS the old part that they are fixing so it cannot be used to make a fake Rolex which makes sense! As far as Bacchus Plateau goes....As a RUSH Disciple since April "75....it is the one Album that does MORE for me internally than ANY other RUSH Vinyl. That Album started everything memorable for me back when it came out. "Fly By Night" got me on my RUSH Surfboard and "Caress Of Steel" showed me how to Ride My Musical Waves! Great chat you shared with us Troy! As always I'm positive your Faithful Posse in here LIVE for these fireside chats Bruddah man! I sure do! MOO From COW-lumbus, Ohio 👋
Very nice! I seem to be a big fan of budget basses myself. I never really cared for "Caress of Steel" and, for the longest time, assumed that it was their first album, since "Fly by Night" was a masterpiece... imo. Meaning, I think "Caress..." has more in common with their debut album than it does "FbN".
Great job as always. Out of curiosity, and I’m sure you’ve answered this before, but how do you learn these songs? By ear, sheet music, tab, other videos? I’m always curious about your note/position preferences, so didn’t know if those are yours or if you are trying to be true to the artists recorded version.
Thank you very much. I'm self-taught and play by ear and memory. As far as positions go, I experiment to see what feels and sounds the best, to me. With respect to "feel", I'm looking for the position that is going to put me in the best position for whatever is coming next. With respect to "sound", some notes just sound different on different basses. Some basses sound great north of the 7th fret of the E string and some don't. Some basses sound too thin and focused on the D and G strings and some don't. As far as being true to the artist's version, that's what I strive for but only with respect to the notes played, not necessarily where they are played.
That Talman sounds great
I love it.
Good job on the song. That one is a little tricky. Those TMB basses are a great value and surprisingly powerful.
I have a 2017 SR805, with a twisted neck. Working with GC, Ibanez won't even make me a new neck. I even offered to pay for it. So I'm gonna have one custom made.
Thanks a lot. Wow, sorry to hear about your Ibanez. That's a premium priced instrument.
Holy cow we have a bass in common!
I love that thing
Awesome!
Me too!!
Thank you SO MUCH for covering a Gino Vannelli song AND referencing Rush! I thought I was the only person in the world that's a diehard Rush fan AND diehard Gino Vannelli fan! Their genres are different yet both have a very high level of musicianship. I hope to hear more Gino Vannelli bass line covers. Another one you may want to consider is the title track - Brother To Brother from the same album as I Just Wanna Stop. Also Appaloosa has a funking bass line. I Feel Like Flying and Santa Rosa are also amazing bass songs.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
The cool thing about your videos Troy, is not only are you an excellent bassist. But you choose REALLY cool songs!
I mean being a musician myself, I always learn something new about a song, that I didn't hear before. So thanks Troy!
Aw, you're too kind, but thanks so much for the nice words.
Hey Troy! Have you considered "Good Love is on the Way" by the John Mayer Trio? It's a very guitar forward song so people overlook the bass line, but Pino Palladino has some of the best bass runs I've ever heard. But he doesn't overdo it and his pocket is just unmatched. Give it a listen! I know it's a little outside what you normally play but I think you could kill it on Pino's bass part.
Hey!! I have not. I was only casually aware of John Mayer when he was a Pop guy, but he completely disappeared from radar when he switched to Blues. I'm just not a fan of the genre, but I will check out your suggestion... you never know. Thanks and take care.
I'll be seeing Gino later this month at Sony Hall. Absolutely fantastic entertainer with a top shelf band, including Peter Erskine's nephew Damian Erskine on bass.
Great job, as always.
Very cool! I looked up the venue and don't think I've ever been there. From its description, it sounded like a BB King's sort of place. Hope you have a great time! Thanks and take care!
Nice song, I dig the yacht rock vibes. I might have to try your clear coat polish trick, I have that same issue with the E string on my little Ibanez. Drives me crazy sometimes, I kept adjusting the action to try and fix it. I love how it plays, like when my shoulder injury flares up it's the only bass I can comfortably play.. but I still don't think I'll ever own another one lol.
Yeah, I hate to admit it, but Yacht Rock has become my favorite genre. I can only go so far with lowering the pick up or raising the action before it starts to feel weird. The next step is to take the cover off and put a thin piece of foam between the p/u and the cover, to get the pole-piece to sit flush with, or below, the cover.
Hey Troy, been watching your channel around a decade now... Not to pry or anything but I've been curious the whole time as to if those masks you have behind you are related to a possible career in film or movies I'm unaware of?
Hello and thanks for hanging in there for so long. I just collected masks and other, horror related, items. Most of the masks are from DeathStudios and are still available from Jeff.
Sounded great, Troy! I'd be happy with any or all of Fountain of Lamneth 😉 Didn't you do part of it a few years ago?
Thanks Jim! I did "Bacchus Plateau" and, maybe, "No One at the Bridge".
Sounds great Troy.. love this tune.. I have the same bass and I still can’t believe how well it sounds and plays for the money.. as always hope your well and have a great day..
Thank you very much. I love it!
Great cover, and song choice. As always, Troy. 10/10!
Thanks so much!
Another absolutely amazing cover Troy!
Thanks Rob!
Brilliant! Except for the fact that I was 22 when this song was released.... Love it!
Thank you and condolences.
1978, such a great time for music and to be in Love as well. Thanks for all the great videos Troy..
Yeah, I just didn't realize it at the time.
@TJH3113 Me neither my friend. Somethings last a lifetime. 🥁🎸✌️
Do you have tabs or do you just know what to play?
Bizarre song choice but it was accurate.
I play by ear and memory.
love this song! what a lovely bass. :) thanks for this one, Troy!
Glad you liked it!
Oooooh…..more Canadiana!👍Very nice job T!🎶🎸👍
Rock on!
Sorry seems to last track of your play , just been so busy, brilliant
Thank you 🙏
Thank you for this cover. It was pleasant to hear.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This one is so fun. You are all the good stuff Fonzy!!!
It is, isn't it? Haha... right.
Gino makes his home in my neck of the woods, and does a lot of big stuff around here. Every so often you'll get to hear him do his stuff, albeit acoustic.
Awesome!
Nice. Can hear the 60hz hum tho. Check ground.
I think it was a wire/loose connection issue.
This song is lovely
Nice cover on that Ibanstein
I agree
Thank you
Holy cow ! What a great choice Troy ! Awesome as always !
Glad to hear that you liked it!
Great song pick, great tone, and nice muted note 2:03
Thanks... haha!
That brought back childhood memories. Heard this on the radio all the time. Funny how unconsciously we remember bass lines.
Very cool!
Thank you for the good music Troy.
My pleasure!
Wow, I remember this song from my childhood! Awesome! My mom is going to love this!!! By the way, did you receive the book she sent? Thanks for posting this!
Yeah, it's an oldie! Yes, we did receive the book... thanks so much. I thanked Marvine shortly after we got it in a reply to one of her comments. I hope she saw it. While we're here, I sent out a belated birthday card shortly after I realized that I missed hers. I hope she got that. Take care!
@@TJH3113 That's great! She didn't see your other message, so I'll let her know. It's harder for her to see, these days, and UA-cam isn't very "friendly" to those with poor vision. Her poor vision is also making it harder for her to type, so please be patient with her messages. She LOVES corresponding with you and doing so makes her very happy. :)
@@TheCocoaDaddyI responded to her comment on this video just a little while ago and basically repeated what I said to you. I’ll try responding using all CAPS in the future future. I do that with someone else as well. Let me know if she didn’t get the card. I wrote and addressed it myself. Lynn tends to get these crazy cards that are more like art projects and I remember thinking (when I was sealing the envelope) how something like that could easily jam up a sorting machine.
@@TJH3113 Hi! Yes, she received the card and loved it! Very creative. :)
I love thys vixdd. It givd,me/
Thanks Marvine! We got the book... thanks so much. I mentioned in another reply right after we got it, but I don't know if you saw it. We sent you out a belated birthday card right after I realized I'd missed your birthday... hope you got that.
Using a compressor?
A little pre-set compression in GarageBand - Smooth Bass.
🩷
Thanks Cindy
Very cool!
Thanks!
Very nice Troy!
Thanks Joe!
Perfect.
Thanks.
awesome
thank you
Gino Vanelli was the shiz for us music lovers back in the day. His 'Appaloosa' kicked so much ass! Leon Gaer playing bass through some synth gear was a real ear opener!
That's what I'm hearing!
Another great one from one K-tel cassette or another that I used to have. The music of this era is so good. Even I get tired of hearing myself talk about today's lack of substance in music, but it is highly evident.
Well chosen (suggested) and well done.
Glad you enjoy it! I try my best to say anything negative about "today's" music for fear of sounding like an old turd, but it's hard... really hard.
Oh cool. I have this album on vinyl. The drummer, Mark Craney, grew up in the same town I grew up in!
Very cool!!
No way!!! This song is definitely a part of my childhood soundtrack. Growing up with a single mom, she played this one a lot. Never really thought much about the bass tracks though 👍
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it.
I can't say it enough, but I'm loving the 70s sound more and more!!
I'm with you. Lynn and I have gone to see the band, The Yacht Lobsters, twice. Every song is a winner!
One of my favorite albums of all time! So glad to see you covering a song off it! Carlos Rios on guitar was a phenom on this record and Jimmy Haslip's bass parts always blow me away, especially the solos on the title track!
Very cool! I'm glad you liked it.
This is awesome. This is absolutely my favorite genre of music. Thanks again, Troy.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been a huge fan of Gino and specifically that album for a while now, cool to see you cover it!
That's great! Glad you liked it.
Wow. That brought back some great memories. Thanks Troy 🎸
That's great to hear. It was my pleasure.
Just perfect Troy, congratulations!
Thanks a lot!
