How to Make An Old Treasure Map - Gothic Homemaking Minutes

- In this episode of Gothic Homemaking, I show you how to make an old treasure map using some easy to find materials. I used to love making old maps when I was a child of fantastic lands I'd dream up. These skills really came in hand when I had to make one for my She's Glowing music video! Maps like these are great for D&D games, pirate cosplays, as film props or just as a fun art project. Enjoy!

No matter what time of day it is and what I’m doing I stop it for Voltaire
You know, your timing is on point. One of the Neighbours' kids has birthday soon and apparently it's gonna be pirat themed. Guess who'll be making a map?
Keep it up and I'm excited for the music video!
Edit: the music video has been released way before this video but UA-cam failed to show it to me until now...
You forgot the "e" in pirate
@@doggy_ded_dingus woops my bad. In my language it's without the e I think that's what happened.
@@cookieoppressor9700 ok
Oh well. We usually used tea instead of coffee. Imagine 2 days before Harry Potter LARP and the bathtub is filled with 20 liters of black tea and every flat surface is covered in dryinf pieces of paper...
Cool thing...I used to do such cards too...but with tea...Never thought about covering it with coffee grounds...Good idea...
I sometimes use both, tea is more yellow and the coffee is brown, makes for nice contrast. Walnut ink is another option too
Voltaire is not only an amazingly talented singer but he's also our goth dad
My brother and I used to use this exact method when we were kids to make treasure maps for the younger kids in the neighborhood. We used to bury some cheap costume jewelry and then hand them a map. They had fun finding it and we had fun setting it up. We lived on the outskirts of town where the few kids around were of different ages. It was a way for us all to play together. Now that we are adults, my brother attends the Renaissance fair as a pirate and hands out little maps that he makes using this method to the little kids.
That's amazing!!!
I did this once back in highschool when our assignment was to create a booklet for our poems from that semester. The only difference that i had done besides coffee was adding essential oils to make my booklet smell old and unusual.
i always love pirates as a kid thanks for bring that inner child of imagination back to life
Thank the darklings...more Voltaire. Bought the new, "What are the Oddz" album. Excellent work. Take care.
I’m using this for a school project so when I clicked on this vid with that in my head, I didn’t expect so much goth
I do this for props in my d&d campaign and also weather paper to bind into journals. So much fun and messy!
Thank you sooooo much! This is exactly what I was looking for as I'm preparing an epic Easter Hunt for my daughter. This is such a cool tutorial, thanks for taking the time to prepare and share!
Intetesting that the pattern/texture of the deck boards also transferred onto the paper when I was drying. 👌🏽
Of course, since he mentioned D&D, we have to ask what Aurelio Voltaire’s favorite character is.
Alternate method:
-Draw a Treasure map
- Wait
I used to make maps like this when I was younger and “ancient” fossil sketches but instead of coffee I used black peppermint scented tea. It was the only tea no one wanted to drink in my house.
This is perfect! My husband's birthday is next month, and he's a HUGE Goonies fan!
I never thought to use coffee, I've always used tea. Coffee will be much easier!
I remember making these many moons ago to create aged looking letters with tea. I really love this nostalgic project! This would make a fantastic art piece, I will definitely try it with coffee now. 🖤🦇
I'm making a map this week for my D&D game. Thank you, papa Aurelio.
I used to love Treasure maps when I was a kid......Ok a couple of years ago but still.....Love the video V. can't wait to see more
For some reason, this brought back memories of grade school arts and crafts; except even in the 90's, teachers wouldn't dare let us use lighters in fear we may burn the school dow-I mean burn ourselves.
That looks like a lot of fun, I may have to re-watch this with my hubby and see if we can make one of our own someday
I used to do maps to when I was a kid! Almost with the same technique, but my parents didn't let me use the lighter so I just ripped the edges of the sheet and colored them with black haha what a good memories you brought me back.
Respect and thank you for creative thinking !!!!
I use to love doing these as a kid.
This is a wonderful idea for a scavenger hunt!
Looks fantastic! Great prop in the music video!
I'm always looking forward to new content :D I showed my mom and sister your videos and we're considering doing some of your projects!
I used to do this as well. Started off making a replica of the map from The Hobbit, and got bit by the bug. Growing up, no one in the house drank coffee, so I would use black tea. In addition to burning the edges, I would often burn one or two small holes in the center. Always did all the artwork before treating the paper though.
Nice video, brought back some fun memories.
Omg lol rn I am making a hobbit map for a book project
We used to do the same thing as kids..only we'd soak the paper in tea and then dry in the oven. Made for fun ancient scrolls!
I absolutely love this and am going to be making maps and buring my lapidary treasures out in the real world!
If you ever run out of hidden talents, I'll probably faint!
thank goodness! i've been looking for tutorials on how to draw old style or ancient looking maps. glad i found this! thank you Mr. Voltaire!
Im obsessed with mermaids but occasionally i like to add other ocean themed stuff to my room as decor as well
Relatable very relateable however this map was amazingly well done and great job on being a trickster with the map in the music video for shes glowing XD
I remember making these so much as a kid
how clever &cool is that a new use for coffee
Nice! I homeschool my three kids and up next we will be reading Treasure Island. This will be a perfect project to us each to do. Thanks for sharing!
I learnt how to make one of those in school, this really brought back memories. I really love the map you made and made the most of what you could find and use.
My infant granddaughter loves your music. She will actually fuss and get mad if we turn it off before she goes to sleep completely. My son has created a playlist of your music just for her. We try to make sure she's exposed to various types of music and play different genres, sometimes she doesn't settle down until we put you on for her. I thought you might like to know about it. Have you, and I'm being serious, ever considered recording classic lullabies in your style for your fans to be able to buy for their children? I would buy an album, I think a lot of people who have children and listen to you would. Peace, love, and light be with you and yours.
Another great DIY. Happy to see a new Gothic Homemaking.
Heck yes! New Voltaire!I'm in school though -_-
The music video was amazing, hoping to see more in the future!
O love gothic homemaking so much! Thanks for your hard work! ♥️
Very cool project..totally awesome..might try it myself. Thank you for sharing.
Looks amazing! Loved the new video!
Such a great idea. Love it!
This is perfect for the fantasy book I’m writing! Thanks so much 🖤🖤
Gonna make one for a junk journal!
Omg!! this is amazing!!
This is the coolest thing, thank you for sharing how to do this! I've been trying to put together an atlas for a book I'm writing and this is perfect!
If you loved making maps as a kid, you should check out the exhibit of Tolkien's maps, drawings, and paintings at the Morgan Library and Museum. It's there through May 12th. He created detailed maps of Middle Earth before he even started to write. Great minds think alike, I guess. 😉
This is brilliant! I want to make a bunch of these!
You have so many talents.
I can't wait to make my own!
I used to always want to make my own map but it never looked good. I'll be sure to try this!
best channel on utube wtf
That's so cool! me encanta! I'll try to do one when I have time
That's so cool :) I saw it in the "She's Glowing" video and had no idea you made it. Thanks for this idea :)
Loved the video, and this is so cool!
That looks amazing. Definitely going to give this a shot for my DnD campaign
I really need to use this for my d&d game
I LOVE THIS VIDEO 😻!
ok, that's something I'm going to have to try!
It looks great.
Coffee works so much better than tea! I've found that sketch paper with a percentage of cotton mixed in or just straight up parchment paper works best for texture. Also (if you dare) if you crumble it up a time or two and gently peel it all apart while it's still wet, it gives it a nice used look with all the creases and such.
Wonderful video, super helpful! Thanks man
So cute, I love it.
Another amazing video. I've seen people use coffee in art but not this well
Wow dude that looks really good
Thats awesome
you are so talented omg bless your beautiful soul
Extremely talented ❤️
This is awesome
Thanks brother. I'm trying to do a treasure hunt for my 5 year old daughter. These are great tips.
I'm really delighted to hear that! I hope you have a great time with the hunt!
Great stuff.
We make maps in this exact same way! We have several decorating our house.
Awesome
awesome!
Dope!
Lol at Orville. You tell him Voltaire, I still think this map is great. Going to have to make it just in case my second cousins come over.
Yeah new home making!!
Made a map with drawings of places and attractions you can wisit around the erea we live, to my lifepartner for christmas😄 Thanks for the help Voltaire☕👌🖤
Jeje muy bonito!!
Saludos desde México 👍
smaller ones would be great wedding or birthday invitations with the map on how to get to each place or each buffet table..lol
i was listening to one of your songs while i saw you uploaded this
Awesome I've been having trouble with creating maps for a fantasy series I'm writing
That's fucking dope Voltaire!
I'm pretty sure Neil Buchanan made something similar on Art Attack (But he tore the paper instead of Burning it). Love seeing this technique on here though :)
All that is missing is a faded musical score on the back for a pipe organ made of bones... :P
Nice DIY
I'm still new to the Voltaire fandom, but hey glad I arrived!
Welcome to our club lmao
Feel welcome!!
So lovecraft
Good job
That's lit
My sister and I tried this once when we were kids. Considering we used notebook paper I don't think ours was this convincing. 😂
I think that the "hot Indonesian Sun" is not so easy to find XD
Anyhow, I used to create those maps too, so to see this beautiful video has been a great journey through the past.
Any sun will do as long as it's not raining. ; )
I love u Voltie!
It's wild that the paper picked up the pattern of the wooden deck boards.
You know what would be an excellent idea. It's a bit far off and unlikely but what if you did gothic homemaking but with a fans apartment. Or deck out an entire house not just with stuff for inside but outside. Painting the house or building outside. Putting in a gothic garden. Gargoyals, rot iron gates ext
