How to Make A Leather Pirate Treasure Map / World Map For Skully - Leatherwork

  • This one is a little bit different of what I usually do, but it was a lot of fun to do.
    Mister Skully, the skull companion of the Captain Brett McAfee was lost in Dimension B-13, and asked me to make a map for him so he could find his way home. Check out Brett's channel for more details : / @skullandspade
    To make this map, I chose cow hide, used a pyro pen to permanently engrave the map, dyed the leather with leather dye using a sponge to create the effect you see in the video, and applyed two coats of leather oil to protect the leather.
    It was really fun to make the map, a little bit intimidating to speak and 'act' for the first time in this video. I hope you like the video. If you did, please like, comment and share it, as it helps a lot.

    I agree with Andy Birkey’s comment. This was a perfect video for UA-cam. It told a story, created an interesting item, stayed in a reasonable timeframe and provides a bit of mystery to hold viewer interest. All while showing the viewer “how to make a pirate map”. Well done sir, well played.

    Nice video! Loved the detailing.
    If you choose to do it again, I have an idea for further details to give it a more "authentic" look.
    The edge of the map was too "clean", it would give it some extra, if it was "flossed" like it had been in heavy use for years and looked worn. I think this could be achieved with a grading iron - or what it's called (the kitchen tool for ripping up vegetables).

      @RedSmith  6 років тому +1

    What type of cow hide did you use was it veg tanned and of what thickness etc...? It looked like it was treated of some sort. And also what was the second stain the lighter creamy stuff?
    Great video I loved it gave me some great ideas and will make one of these maps for sure

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  6 років тому +1

      Thanks a lot! To make this map, I chose 2.4mm thick cow hide, used a pyro pen to permanently engrave the map, dyed the leather with leather dye using a sponge to create the effect you see in the video, and applied two coats of leather oil to protect the leather.

    Very nice work. I am going to try one of these but carving and tooling instead of burning. Q: It wasn't obvious to me where the X marks the spot treasure location was, unless it was the second compass point where the radiating bearings intersected the main compass bearing lines. Or maybe this was not a specific treasure map, just a more general map a Pirate captain might have. Anyway, very nice work. I would be interested in where you found the various maps you used as a template. Thanks for sharing.

    Quel chouette rendu ! Est-ce que tu recommandes une température particulière pour le pyrograveur ? J'imagine que ça dépend du type de cuir etc, mais faut -il éviter un certain degrés ? Merci d'avance !

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  5 років тому

      Merci ! Mon pyrograveur n'a pas de réglage de température.Il faut juste bien connaître l'outil et faire des essais sur différentes pièces de cuir. L' important est de ne pas trop s'attarder sur le cuir lorsqu'il est fin. On peut toujours refroidir le fer en le passant sur une éponge humide

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  6 років тому

      I can only make a map as large as the hide I can find. They are usually 1.8 square meter but cutting a rectangle out of is would reduce the size. I think I could do a map twice or three time bigger than the one you saw in the video.

    • @carsonburkhart6422

      The Redsmith what about something like 55"x88"?

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  6 років тому

      I don't think I can find a hide this big. The biggest one I bought was around 30"x45". For a bigger map, I would have to use vegetable tanned leather, which would look completely different.
