Catherine parr was a great mother to those children. She clearly cares about them and that one scene where she says goodnight to them is an example of her maternal love for them

She even seem to have had a level of maternal instinct as well. That one scene with Mary, she knows something is up with her oldest step-daughter and she knows it's not the excuse that Mary gives her but she's not trying to gaslight her into the truth. She just tells her “ I still care about you though I know for whatever reason, you don't care so much about me anymore “ and leaves it there. Marys sudden hostility for her is upsetting but she respects her enough to not force hae into saying why

I'm sure how her father treated his wives had an effect on Elizabeth but also he being molested by Catherine Parr's 2nd husband Thomas Seymour and what she saw happen to her sister when she married would have had the most impact on her choice not to marry. Her sister was kind of damned if she did and damned if she didn't when it came to choosing a husband. Plus, I doubt she liked the thought that a Queen could not rule on her own and needed a husband.

Given her family's history it makes sense Elizabeth would not want anything to do with getting married.

Loved your in-depth take on 'The Tudors' throughout all the seasons in the show. Despite its historical inaccuracies it's a great production and a big favourite. I'm always looking forward to your content. Thank you 🙏🏻💖

The one thing I hate about Catherine Parr is all the love she gives to Elizabeth during her time as Queen seems to go out of the window and her maternal care for her seems to weaken once married to Seymour. Although you can argue that she involved herself in Seymour's actions so as to prevent Seymour going any further with Elizabeth and eventually sends her away I just can't frame my mind towards her logic. Similarly, was Anne of Cleves not available as a secondary step mother to Elizabeth and couldn't she have gone to her?

Mary's joy at being restored to the succession actually makes me really sad. Throughout the show, we see her constant desperation for her father's love, and how any slight indication of his approval makes her so happy. The way Henry treated his children was just awful.
I agree with you about the show's portrayal of Catherine Parr. Catherine Parr is probably the queen I've always found most interesting, and Joely Richardson is a great actress, but Parr was not particularly well-written.
I also loved the scenes where Henry is visited by his former wives! Some of my favourite scenes in the entire show.
The thing I love the most about this half of the season is that we get some Seymour power-couple action. I don't love the way Anne Seymour was written (the way they seemed to mash Edward Seymour's two wives together into one character really irritated me, as there's no evidence I'm aware of that suggests Anne and Edward Seymour's marriage was unhappy) but she's a total badass in this season. I could happily watch an entire soap opera of the two of them being large and in charge.

According to Robert Dudley, who was a childhood friend, Elizabeth told him when they were still very young that she did not intend to marry.
Also, I can't imagine Mary EVER referring to Elizabeth as a queen. After all, that would mean Mary was dead and had no heir. Of course, that eventually happened, but I don't believe Mary would want to imagine or anticipate it.

Well, the "object of desire" speech should always include Catherine of Aragon as well, as Henry married her for love.

Thanks for the review Dr. Paranque I think they did a much better job with the second half of Season 4 than with the first half. I enjoyed the portrayal of Catherine Parr and thought it was much better than the portrayal of Catherine Howard. Joely Richardson did a great job of showing what a loving, caring mother figure Catherine Parr was to all Henry's kids especially Edward and Elizabeth. BE's Catherine Parr was terrible. The show could've shown her being a bit stronger and more passionate about her Protestant faith I suppose but overall captured her personality well.
The thing that bothered me the most about Season 4 was the scene where Elizabeth tells Mary that she will never marry because of what happened to Katherine Howard. Ugh that drove me crazy because in real life she told ROBERT DUDLEY she never wished to get married when they were eight years old. He recounted this to an ambassador later during her reign. Most likely she told him this because of Katherine Howard's downfall and execution. Either way it left its scars on her I'm sure. The final season especially really suffered from not having the Dudleys in it. Robert's friendship with Elizabeth and Edward too was important during this time. As was John Dudley's military and political influence. He was by Edward Seymour's side during Henry VIII's final days. I agree with you that we can't know for sure when Elizabeth decided to never marry (she seemed to go back and forth throughout her life) but losing Katherine Howard the way she did must have left quite the impact.

Yes though we have no evidence that Robert and Elizabeth met when they were that young but I see your point!
I really liked the ending though I doubt Henry was full of remorse…

@@ElleHistory You're probably right. I hope for the sake of his kids he had some remorse. 😢😢Robert Dudley did tell an ambassador early on in Queen Elizabeth's reign that they had been friends since before she was eight years old and that she told him when they were eight that she never wanted to marry. So they must have become friends in their childhood during Henry VIII's reign.

I took that line to mean Henrys first wife, Queen Catherine, not Catherine Howard as she never coronated. And, in all fairness, Catherine of Aragon is the one who REALLY got screwed over.

We made it to the end! The final two episodes are my favourite episodes overall. So many people dismiss it cos JRM doesn't look like a traditional Henry VIII.

I always thought Elizabeth was referring to Katherine of Aragon…to Mary’s mother. And that it was proper to refer to her as Queen Katherine. Did I misinterpret it wrong?🤔 I loved this series! It gave me a thirst to learn the accurate history of the Tudor dynasty. It will always hold a special place in my heart ❤️ Thank you for your wonderful review✨🥰✨

I've got to give the series credit for making me search out actual historians who know better than this "made for tv drama". Historical fiction can be powerful..i just wish more respect to the fact these were real people not just figures was paid. I did love the sets ..the costumes (even though not entirely spot on) and the cast all did a phenomenal job.
I REALLY enjoyed your reviews of the series. I wonder if you've watched the horribly bad but kinda fun Bridgerton series?

Are you sure they wanted to know their father or spend time with him? Because it was maybe mutual, allegedly, Elizabeth would not write to her father because she was scared of him.
