  • Author of the Outlander series, Diana Gabaldon, reacts to some of the TV show's most iconic moments. You can get the new book in the series, Go Tell The Bees That I'm Gone, here: amzn.to/3MEDEAv
It is 1779 and Claire and Jamie are at last reunited with their daughter, Brianna, her husband, Roger, and their children on Fraser's Ridge. Having the family together is a dream the Frasers had thought impossible.
Yet even in the North Carolina backcountry, the effects of war are being felt. Tensions in the Colonies are great and local feelings run hot enough to boil Hell's tea-kettle. Jamie knows loyalties among his own tenants are split and the war is on his doorstep. It's only a matter of time before the shooting starts.
Not so far away, young William Ransom is still coming to terms with the discovery of his true father's identity - and thus his own. Lord John Grey also has reconciliations to make and dangers to meet . . . on his son's behalf, and his own.
Meanwhile, the Southern Colonies blaze, and the Revolution creeps ever closer to Fraser's Ridge. And Claire, the physician, wonders how much of the blood to be spilt will belong to those she loves.

I’m grateful that Diana and the show runners have such a strong relationship and that she is still involved in development and decision making of the show. And, I’m glad she understands that the show is separate from the books and that what works in her books isn’t going to work on screen or simply be budget friendly. My favorite example is the part from the fourth book and season where Jamie fights and kills a bear. It would be dangerous to have actor Sam Heughan fight a real bear and expensive to render a CGI bear, so in the show they had a man go mad and believe he was possessed by the spirit of a bear. It works out just as well in the show despite being a bit different from the book, and I admire both versions.

@@Gwenhwyfar7 you know, I have seen the series so many times, I’ve lost count. Back in 2017 I read all the books. Recently, I have started listening to audio versions. I just finished Outlander and I’ll tell you one thing, a LOT of things are different from the shows. Things I had totally forgotten about. Not just events that have been removed or changed a bit. But character attitudes, and in some cases, their entire personality, is different. My main concern is Claire. Book Claire is FAR different from tv Claire. Book Claire is far more careful and takes into account the era in which she lives. She understands that 20th century ideals just will not fly in the 18th. It will be dangerous and draw attention to her. She is willing to do things that would never be allowed in her time, such as killing a teen age redcoat to save Jamie. Many key events, such as with Father Bain, have been totally changed. I always found tv Claire’s total disregard for the ideas, customs and morals of the era she found herself in, quite irritating and frankly she is not nearly as likable as book Claire. She constantly tries to push 20th century morals. She bitches and complains, as well as being irritating, it draws attention to herself and Jamie. It creates more trouble than it solves. The key offender in that was in season 4 when she tried to save the life of a slave that was to be executed. She had her high minded attitudes that put not only herself, but Jocasta and Jamie in serious danger. She is too self righteous. I never did like how they portray Claire in the show. I just try and ignore it.

I think a few things have happened to GRRM: He's too busy with other stuff, he's possibly written himself into a corner and has writer's block, HBO stole his thunder by progressing without him, or he'll die before the series is finished. I nominate Diana Gabaldon and Bernard Cornwell to co-write the rest of GRRM's books, since GRRM is never going to finish them.

There's only 2 things on this list as a book reader I would've liked changed. In the books Jaime and Claire get married at the same church that her and Frank marry at 200 years later. It adds a layer of emotion and feelings of guilt to the day in the books. Also the rescue scene when Claire is with the Lionel. I loved this scene in the book as Claire is only semi conscious and the first thing she notices is the sound of Highland drumming getting louder and louder and then the charge of Jamie and his men, I found it so powerful.

Diana is so well educated. Not only does she have a PhD in Science, but she’s a brilliant writer. She knows her history of all the continents. She has knowledge of all things Scottish Irish, English, and American. She knows of Scottish folklore and fae. She threw in medical knowledge vs wet nurses vs witches and witch trials. She knows the history of the wars in that time period, who the Kings and various rulers & renegades were. Shes knowledgeable of the American settlers and Native Americans and the painfully tragic battles they fought privately trying to hold onto their land before all hell broke loose. Let’s not forget about slavery. Not to mention the verbiage and accents spoken by everyone from the lowliest of peasants to the highly educated royalty, those with respectable position & everyone in between.
It’s a rather interesting plethora of knowledge to say the least. It would be interesting to see an interview where she discusses her education, her interests and why such a diversity.
I can say this much. I have a degree in Biology/Zoology. It’s considered a hard science. It’s not an easy degree & I’m not “stupid”. Diana, @ the very least, has a PhD in Science. Still, she chose to become a writer instead? I wonder what makes her tick?

Diana Gabaldon brought up “Interstitial Cystitis” in her last book. My mother had that in her 50’s. She said that generally only 25,000 people had it and that most of them kill themselves because of the chronic pain. Her bladder had shrunk to a quarter of its size and you feel as if you have to pee all of the time. Her chosen method of treatment included an acupuncturist with a needle at the tip of his finger literally going up into her genitalia. She thought the consensus was that the disease could have come on from the stuff she used to treat Rosacea, Tetracycline (?). Although she had to take Thyroid meds since her 20’s. Not a disease you would wish on anyone. Good Luck to those who have it.

Diana has seemed overall to be very supportive of the series (particularly its actors), but I know (even as a non-reader of the series, much to my own failings) that there's been plenty of liberties. I could listen to Diana all day. I would love to hear more insights from her. So often on panels for the show, Diana doesn’t get the chance to answer much. The actors are often asked about their characters and I’m over here screaming, ask Diana she knows the characters better than anyone. Loved watching this

She is an incredibly gifted writer, and so much respect for her open-mindedness to making changes to the storyline in the show. The show is a huge success because of how closely the producers work with her as a consultant, and they truly protect the characters to ensure that they are seen in their true light, as Diana wrote them. Brilliant writing, producing, directing, and acting. I hope this show never ends, although I suppose that depends on Diana’s next novels, and of course if the actors will continue their roles! We at least know that season seven will happen! 🙏🙏❤️❤️

What a remarkable Narration by Diana Gabaldon on her books & scenes from ‘Outlander’ and how they deviate from her story lines, Sadly I never read the books, but I’ve been mesmerised since the first day by the time traveling Love story of Jamie & Claire portrayed brilliantly by Sam Heughan & Caitriona Balfe, and conceived by the amazing imagination of Diana, I wasn’t keen on the first episode of S6. It being so dark, and getting darker with each episode, but I’m still compelled to return to this captivating story of love mystery and intrigue that is ‘Outlander’ one of my Dads favourite sayings was ‘it’s the Best thing since Sliced Bread! It couldn’t be more true! but it’s much more interesting 😘💞❤️‍🔥❣️

If only all adaptations collaborated so strongly with the authors! There's a reason people love certain books so deeply, but Hollywood too often strays from the source material and wonders why the movie/show flops. 🤦🏻‍♀I'm going to be crushed when the books and show are finished. Already dreading it.

@@margaretlavender9647 really? I use audible, and find it’s about the same as a physical book (about $16 AUD, I think that is less than £10). I do drive a lot though, so it fills my time in the car. The last one was about 50hrs long, so lasted me a while.

The books and the tv series do have some differences, but the spirit of the books is maintained in the show better than most adaptations of books to shows/movies. I highly recommend both the book series and the tv series. They do compliment each other beautifully. The books are written in such detail that you can picture it in your mind. If you do not care for reading, then please try the audiobooks...the narration is superb! Listening is perfect while driving or cleaning house or just taking a moment to relax. BTW, I happen to use Audible, so I use credits that come with my monthly subscription to purchase the books. The books themselves are much longer than many other books, and they normally would cost more if you were buying them outright. However, you actually save money getting them with a credit...just a thought. Just remember they are different ways of telling a story, so there's no need to get too caught up in the differences that may happen to save time on a show, for example. Sometimes, it helps to keep them separate. Other times, it's like you're getting additional perspective that you may not get from the other source. Either way, well worth it!

I actually read the series years ago using a little known place called a library...free. Waited years for the series to be filmed..Heard about one of the books being released so I went to the library to put my name on the list thinking that nine months was plenty of time to be first on the list...not! Would recommend reading the series, I've read it twice...

I love the Outlander series of books, Diana Gabaldon is a wonderful writer. Season 1 of Outlander followed the books quite closely so I thought it was fabulous. As the TV series went on the show got further and further away from the books . It was still pretty good but certainly not as good as the books.
If you haven't read the books I would suggest watching the TV show first because it is a wonderful show in its own right and the actors are perfect. Then read the books. They will flesh out the show/story for you.
