Tekki Shodan & Funakoshi's Niju Kun 18

There are situations where kata can give us choices. Those choices can be thought of do either A or B. What you do depends on the responses of your enemy.
Funakoshi's Niju Kun 18 reads, "Perform Kata Exactly; Actual Combat is another matter". The latter part of this statement pertains how you APPLY your kata. Nakasone elaborates on Funakoshi's work. He writes, :It will not do to be hampered or shackled by the rituals of kata. Instead, the practitioner should transcend kata, moving freely according to the opponent's strengths and weaknesses.

So the application of the kata is techs that do not even exist in the art or else done entirely differently to karate fundamentals.Complete nonsense rationale.

So what techniques are not found in karate? The oblique kick? ...the knee strike? the choke? They aren't in karate?

@@AppliedShotokan the knee is done as you show in muay thai with the plum position,.there is no knee in karate sparring nor is it practiced outside kata.there is no guillotine karate.you are taking effective techs from other arts and tryi g to reverse engineer them into karate kata its sheer pointless,just spar with all these techs and drill what you know works fro sparring g,how do you think mma became so effective.

This knee strike from the clinch can also be found in heian yondan. It's obvious that you are grabbing the head then throwing the knee. Kata is robotic and can't teach you HOW to use techniques. It can only tell you WHAT to do. @@scarred10
