I thought that this was going to be a project car for Noah. Next, before you know it, Mr Magic is working his mojo on it. I do predict a project for Noah is just over the horizon.
"Starts right up after 38 years, let me have it for a few minutes and it won't run again." Ha! Yep, been there. Man, it just fires right up. Just like my old VW bug. Just a touch of the key and off it goes. Thanks.
Yep 8.50 well spent is right. Always good to see it keep running. Now you really know how good that engine is as well after tearing the engine down and putting it back together. Sounds great
That color looks like detroit diesel alpine green . you do amazing work Jonathan . You have great common sense and seat of the pants engineering expertise !
Thank you Jonathan for all you do for us, your faithful subscribers. You are honorable and a true gentleman of great talents and patience. Between you and Darren (Mustie1), you have the 2 favorite channels here on UA-cam. Chuck in Kansas
She sound real good for being ninety years old. Especially for the weekend's worth of time(all told, I figure, since you brought her home) that you put in her. "Let it set for 38 years and it starts right up. Let me have it for a few days and I'll make it where it won't run..." Sure, that'll be the day. Remember how long you worked to get that big mower tractor to start?
After you teased out the wiring problem, it started so easy it was scary. I wouldn't want to bump into it when the key was on and it was in gear, I'm telling you that thing would fire and roll right on down the road. Thanks, JW. I really enjoyed this one.
Precision makes arguably the best shim stock available. You have some good friends there. Really hope you do continue with this project. Even if it has sit on the back burner for a while. Really want to see this one go down the road under its own power just like the Elcar. Yep, I like Rotella too! Every motor that gets an oil change in my small engine shop goes out with Rotella oil in the crankcase. I may be able to help you on those wheels depending on where in Indiana the guy is. I live in the north central part of the state.
"Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need an expert opinion!" Great work on the Whippet, you're amazing. Thank you for sharing this with us. Linda and I send our best.
Unbelievable Jonathan. That thing runs great. Good luck with your search. If you find something in northern California let me know I'll ship it to you.
Dear Jonathan I'm glad you took the time to show us what you're up to out in the yard really cool love it sitting here sick in Canada anyways my name is Carl and Sandra Windsor Ontario Canada at the Detroit border we thank you
Interesting clutch adjustment. New to me! Thanks for explaining it. Great old car, great vid. I've got on old Willys with the Go-Devil engine and I didn't know that there was a precursor engine going back this far. Very interesting. Thanks!
If you can’t find any cloth wire you can use paracord. Just remove the sleeve from the inner cord and heat shrink the ends to your connectors at each end. Looks pretty trick and the colors are endless. Just keep them away from high heat. I’ve done it on motorcycles before but never “under” a hood.
Some years ago I found a supplier of a cotton braided cover for wire that you could slip over modern wire to make it look like the original cloth covered wire on eBay. It was for restoring old fans and radios.
Here's a couple of links for cotton braid covered wires: www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&source=hp&ei=eHFUXMKDJsLEjwTO9bXoBA&q=cotton+braid+for+wires&btnK=Google+Search&oq=cotton+braid+for+wires&gs_l=psy-ab.3...5314.16552..18134...0.0..0.427.2445.17j5j4-1......0....1..gws-wiz.....0..0i131j0j0i10j0i22i10i30j33i22i29i30j0i22i30._LUON_JbHgYcottonbraidedwire.com/en/
Great job on this car, and thank-you for showing how the systems on these very old cars work. I have a 1926 Model T, but your videos are teaching me a lot about the other cars of the era. Between the Elcar and the Whippet, I may learn enough to try and repair a 1920s orphan if it comes along!
hey jonathan i give you big props for preserving these truly old cars. and just as good you have sparked the interest of the next generation in noah. keep up the great videos please
Man the refurbishment on the willys engine etc was great to follow what you did to get her running reliably again for next to no dollars spent only your time which is a labour of love more than anything, l only wish l lived around the corner from you as you would never get rid me if l dropped by! It reminds me what l did to get old cars going again to drive around paddocks as a kid as l love the old side valve engines and the simplicity that’s missing on today’s mills, only trouble is l live too far away here in Australia but at least l feel as though I’m standing there with you! I like your videos, cheers.
I've been watching your videos on fixing the Whippet engine. I love tinkering on old cars myself and really enjoy watching the whole process . Keep on keep'n on!
Oh that runs GOOD! Sweet little motor. I really like the whippet its a good looking old car. Yeah that pully on the water pump fan is disturbing might break and the fan tears into the radiator.
Sounds good and it didn't shake the gas tank off the cowl this time. I live about an hour from Brownsville and would be happy to pick up the parts and send them your way. Wouldn't take too much to get me to drive them down since I have family in Fayetteville that I haven't seen in way too long. Good job on the Whippet and let me know if I can help....
Jonathan great job getting her back together. You’re right it would be nice too source some cloth wiring. How cool it would be if you could get that heater to work also, maybe come the fall you will have found a wheel for it and get her button up proper like. She’s a keeper for sure. Hope you had a good Father’s Day take care
You should check out Engles Coach shop.ua-cam.com/channels/MgTlht-PsNniRIuaax4m8QHe.html specializes in repairing old coach work including full restoration of wood wheels.
this sounds so much better than before. ya'll did it! good job boyo. one other thang, use some of that fancy metal help fluid on the surround of the radiator. see the thing is, I really appreciate your keeping stuff like the wire on the carb horn, I think I would take the wire back off, put on jb weld, replace. that stuff you could put on the rust, would save this for posterity. like say 20 years. this motor is a goodun. good work senior.
Great video Jonathan i have really enjoyed this one and is great to see you back doing what you do best. Noah is such a lucky lad to have you as a mentor although he looks to be doing just fine on his own. You always make things look so easy i wish i had just 10% of your knowledge to be able to do what you do. Send my regards to the family and i hope everyone is ok. cheers Shayne
fantastic running machine. how easy to restore. you're a lucky guy to find this car and have the tools to machine your parts. After you get the wheel I would love to finish up the restoration.
Just stumbled across your channel, wanted to comment, hey you don't need to apologise , your DOING a great job, really like your content and enjoyed these wippet videos !!
She sure does start quick! The first start was quick and then after you got the wires right she didn’t even hesitate! Nice work Jonathan and Noah! Hope the guy comes trough for you on the wheel(s). Happy Fathers Day!
I donno if its thick enough, probably not but there is push back cloth wire used in tube amps, I've used it in that application. 22 gauge wire, 300 volt. Comes in 6 colors I get it from Hoffman amps who is on the east coast for like .30 cents a foot. Its used to replicate the look of cloth wires in old Fender amps... (I think Leo stocked up after the war and bought surplus, they wired amps with it for good gosh probably 10-15 years...)
I'm amazed how you made your own shims for the crank, and modified a different lifter to work engine sounds great, hope you find a rim for the front so you can do your first drive in the 1929 whippet, great video jonathan.
Another good job done as normal Jonathan I did c that the fan pully was a bit all over the place. But it sounds really sweet u done a nice job. I really hope you get that wheel u need all the best from Andy in UK
Looks and sounding good Jonathan, I think i speak for everyone when i say we would like to see the old girl fixed up, you could make a trailer and when you take your Elcar to a show take the Whippet on the trailer. Wish you the best of luck finding a Whippet front wheel a sensible price.
I found wire with braided coat used for stove / oven repair. It has a high temperature braided sheath that would look authentic. What part of Indiana were you looking for someone in for the wheel separation?
An old friend of mine had one same year in upstate NY took me and wife for a ride on a dirt road over an even older single lane bridge on buttermilk falls rd. at night it was nostalgic rest in peace our butch
Gotta love that engine that would start that dang smooth. Loved your insult to one's self; give it to me and it will never run again... so untrue my friend as you have started engines I would of given up on... Stop beating yourself up as you are priceless in a world of want a be's. I would hold your back in any fight as to who is one of the best I've seen in a bit. Miles a head of my best day and I only thought I was pretty good. You've forgot more than most ever learn
Runs nice! My dad and I had a clog on in the overflow of the Model T we drive for the local museum. Looked like the rad tank was starting to swell which got us worried. I ran a piece of baling wire into it from the bottom and knocked out a bunch of dirt, so I'm guessing the mud daubers had been at work. Looks like they like the radiator and heater of the Whippet, too!
Hello Johnathan im a new subscriber . Just let you know ive enjoyed watch the whippet start up . Just checking some of the other videos. Nice to see the youg fella working with you. Im in canada wish i had acsess to the parts that you do
That sounds great , I'm fairly new to your channel , I like it and think it's great that you were able to get it running without having to fully rebuild it
It continues to amaze me that people find fault with, and give a thumbs down on what J.W. does - he is a perfect example of authentic American ingenuity - God bless.
I wonder if, many many years ago it was put off the road because it was only running on 3 cylinders? The rings and valves seem to be in great condition .Cotton braided wire is still available and you might even find that Whippet owners know someone who can make a proper cotton sheathed loom.
I recall reading a story in Hemmings Classic Car about a gentleman in eastern Massachusetts who specializes in these wheels. Perhaps you can get some information from others. A starting engine = a good repair job.
I would of loved to see the oil pump and pick up to see how they differ from modern engines. I also would of like to seen the timing set-up since the generator was driven the timing chain.
I had seen in your teardown video that you had turned the crank; was there any problem finding bearings? You might have addressed this, but I missed it.
Jonathan, you NEVER stop amazing me, is there anything you can't do???? you are a true craftsman
It's amazing how well that fires right up. Better than new cars. Good one Jonathan.
ive got a 18 reg car and i got up today to go to work and it would not start but this car duns
I thought that this was going to be a project car for Noah. Next, before you know it, Mr Magic is working his mojo on it. I do predict a project for Noah is just over the horizon.

Oh that runs GOOD! Sweet little motor. I really like the whippet its a good looking old car. Yeah that pully on the water pump fan is disturbing might break and the fan tears into the radiator.
LOL I was thinking the same thing hope it ain't the bearing on the water pump because it would make a mess if she let go
Love that Auto Meter radiator gauge. Had one rebuilt for our antique fire engine. Very cool!
Yes- the shop that did our restoration took parts from a new one and updated the old one to retain the original logo. They did a great job.
Sounds good and it didn't shake the gas tank off the cowl this time. I live about an hour from Brownsville and would be happy to pick up the parts and send them your way. you have a sweet running engine there. you gotta be a happy camper
My grandpa used phillips oil for over 50 years on his farm and it never let him down good stuff

I love that car, but I need another project like a hole in my head. I've got about as many projects as you do but yours get done.
For the broken carb horn, wouldn't J B Weld ensure that you wouldn't have to worry about it falling apart while awaiting a new old part to replace it?

Nice! I sure look forward to seeing it move under it’s power! Nice job...
Boy that engine just loves to run, your skills are new and old school.
It continues to amaze me that people find fault with, and give a thumbs down on what J.W. does - he is a perfect example of authentic American ingenuity - God bless.
I think that clutch set up is pretty trick for to be from 1915 patent. Motor sounds good.
Прекрасна робота!Молодець!Велика повага таким людям!
Love the wasp nest heater under the dash. That is an oldie.
Thanks, Jonathan...wonderul job & video...I thought those L134 valves adjusted cold...?
Looks like your really having some fun on this Ol'Gal I knew it'd fire up! keep up the gr8 content mate!
Engine runs well, good job Jonathan.
On my ‘42 GPW Ford script Willy’s I noticed the glass fuel filter work good. I usually dump it out when I fill it up.
what do you mean you dump it out when you fill it up?
G. SINGLETON : he dumps the sediment bowl when he fills the gas tank.
The guys that just rebuilt my '50 Dodge engine were working on one of those. Military vehicles are their specialty.
I wonder if, many many years ago it was put off the road because it was only running on 3 cylinders? The rings and valves seem to be in great condition .Cotton braided wire is still available and you might even find that Whippet owners know someone who can make a proper cotton sheathed loom.
Mercmad - Or maybe 3 wheels, LOL........ Sure is a neat car though.
I recall reading a story in Hemmings Classic Car about a gentleman in eastern Massachusetts who specializes in these wheels. Perhaps you can get some information from others. A starting engine = a good repair job.
Engine runs and sounds really good now, nice work!
I would of loved to see the oil pump and pick up to see how they differ from modern engines. I also would of like to seen the timing set-up since the generator was driven the timing chain.
looks and sounds good, wow!!! great job! take care!!!!!!!
I had seen in your teardown video that you had turned the crank; was there any problem finding bearings? You might have addressed this, but I missed it.
Looking forward to seeing you driving it, good job!!
What part of Indiana is the axle in? I'm due to visit family in st. john
I grew up half a mile south of ST, John. in the 40s and 50s. Knew everyone in town back then.
Lowes has lamp wire covered with cloth in 'decorator colors' in their lighting decor section. Might be a good option if the gauge is right.
Your channel should be on tv would be the best thing on.
And no yelling and cussing like the Tuttles.
That is a great idea. Better than most of the married at first sight the bachelor the bachelorette is he the one dating for all crap that’s on tv now
Great- trying to start mine this week.
Damn thing runs better than some new cars! Beauty.
I like the color you painted the engine.
Where abouts in Indiana is the potential wheel donor ? I'm from northern Indiana and will be heading to NC on the 29th.
