Mr. Blue Sky will always remain as my favorite ELO song.
Turns out the line isn't even "Bruce" but rather a vocal ad-lib made by Jeff Lynne saying "groose.” Lynne said he only kept the "groose" in after his German engineer asked him "how did you know that word? Gruss. It means 'greetings' in German."
Growing up I always heard it as "brutes."

Yes this is correct. When recordingg the song Jeff felt there was something missing in that part after singing 'Don't Bring Me Down' and so the word Groos suggested by the German engineer was added in.
ELO was mostly responsible for the soundtrack to the movie "Xanadu" with Olivia Newton-John. "All over the World" is a great song of theirs to listen to...
Half of it anyway.
Jeff Lynne is one of the greats who was part of the Travelling Wilburies.
"Mr. Blue Sky" gets a lot of buzz for production values, but one can't ignore the soaring ambition of "Turn to Stone".😉

I saw them but once. It was in Pax AZ and it was a theater in the round. Not a bog place. Maybe sea 2000. Yes the stage revolved. It was 73.
You can't go wrong with Jeff Lynne and ELO. "Turn to Stone" is my favorite of theirs. They probably have the most songs that can get stuck in your head, including "Can't Get You Out of My Head".

Don't bring me down was one of their last commercially successful songs. By this time the "Light Orchestra" component of their name was not really part of their songs anymore. You can listen to any song of the "New world record" album to hear their original commercial sound.

This song was popular on the radio back when I was in high school, late 70’s/early 80’s. Long before the internet. Could never quite make out “groos”, and me and my friends thought they were singing “Bruce”, with a strange reference to Springsteen, who was very popular at the time. First time I was able to actually look up the lyric I remember laughing hysterically at first, and then thinking “WTF is a GROOS?”

For an opera singer I would assume that it would be more interesting to listen to Jeff Lynne's vocal performance on Eldorado, the title-track off the album of the same name from 1974. The Album ist subtitled "A Symphony by the Electric Light Orchestra" and includes a 40-piece string section. Cheers from Germany.

Hello from Sun Valley, California!When I first heard this,I thought that it was a disco tune(I was 10).
Technically Surfin’ USA came out before Don’t Bring Me Down, so it would be Jeff Lynne who did the stealing (borrowing)…
There are many more (and better) ELO songs especially for a first time intro to the band. Especially listen to Concerto For A Rainy Afternoon. You will love it. But do all three movements in order. It's an ELO masterpiece!

my 3rd fav band after beatles n u2, yep that high, sadly richard keys recently died. jeffs still touring. vis song is ver only nmbr 1 hit, had mre top 40 hits van any other band. vis is atypical as its ver disco album- try last train to london, creative n pushed musical boundaries wit classical, rock, pop, disco, blues, infushions, try living thing, telephone line, rockaria ( haha), evil woman, turn to stone, twilight/urs truly, ticket to v moon, hold on tight, cant get it out of my head,

Think you are thinking of I dont like Mondays by the Boom Town Rats. That is a song that will bring you down but not as fast as wearing an orange parker would.
Traveling Wilburies had Tom Petty, the biggest single artist of the group, in my opinion.

I think your brain fart moment is likely thinking of Rockin' Robin (verse portion).
Groos was originally a made-up (meaningless) placeholder syllable and later left in for reasons previously stated.
