I’ve been listening to this album since 1977. Perfection ❤
This whole LP is perfect in every way possible, out of the blue by ELO is the epitomy of good music
I have grown up with ELO. There music has guided me through all the good times and bad. Just awesome!😊
Jeff Lynne is a genius, and you've heard him without hearing him. He produced songs by Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, and many others. He was one of the Traveling Wilburys and was literally the 5th Beatle when he produced and recorded with the surviving members on the 1994 Anthology project.
Agreed ❤
Dude, this is one of the greatest bands of all time. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. He loved The Beatles and The Beach Boys, you'll hear the influences.
ELO has always been outstanding musically. My favorite group ever with the Beatles. Jeff Lynne produced the Beatles as well. The man is a genius.
The Beatles put the ball down in 1970 and ELO picked it up and ran with it. And ran and ran.
Lennon called them "sons of Beatles"
I saw them and they played 27, yes 27, songs.
Being on vinyl records, Mr. Blue Sky finishes Side 3 with the voice synthesizer saying, "Please turn me o-ver".
ELO will be starting their North American Tour in August, 2024. They still put on a truly amazing show.
Said to be Jeff's final tour.
the most sumptuous rolled gold album side ever recorded.
Roll Over Beethoven is a must hear. Others-Evil woman, Telephone Line, Last Train To London, Twilight, Can't Get It Out Of My Head, sweet Talkin Woman and all Over the World to name just a few.
Got to listen to "Eldorado", only problem, you have to listen to the whole thing in one shot- absolute masterpiece !!!!!!!
John Lennon was asked in the late 70's what the Beatles would sound like if they were still together, and he replied "We'd sound like Electric Light Orchestra".
As an elo nut thank you young man for listening to this in its entirety hop you enjoyed it as much as us oldies thank you 😊😊😊😊
Thank you for listening to another great album and group. Most of this music that is more complex and has a lot of melodies in chord progressions and a lot of instruments in and out. It takes time to digest. But to me this music is absolutely mind blowing. Thank you.
Mr. Bev Bevan on fire extinguisher. Take a bow, Bev! 😉
"Big Wheels" remains tied with "Night in the City" off the same album as my favs from ELO. "Big Wheels" really spoke to me with it's opening lyric, "I've been thinking it over..."
ELO were the first band I saw in concert at the Philadelphia Spectrum in the early 70's. Great band!
So, in the late 70s we had
Yes
Genesis
Return to Forever
Weather Report
Dixie Dregs
Emerson Lake & Palmer
And also….This!!
Great double album. Lots of gems here. Can hear the Beatles influence. John Lennon called them the new Beatles
As said very often, we were soooo musically spoiled
And concert tics were $7 / $8 for floor seats to these shows. No backing tracks either
Nice one, bro!!
I smiled when you said "a little Beatles in there..". John Lenon called this band the Sons of the Beatles.
Jeff Lynne hired the same German orchestra he used on their two previous albums, now a 54 piece with a 32 voice choir (including their three resident string players). This is when ELO were at their most expansive, such a unique sound, and the production is in a class of its own.
Yeah the production is absolutely gorgeous. I loved the transitions between the parts. Very beatles like at points. I loved the second half!
Thanks so much for taking on the whole of Concerto for a Rainy Day... no surprise that Mr Blue Sky took you on a heightened emotional journey when you heared it in context of the concerto! ELO is a big rabbit hole - early stuff is the most challenging and proggy - latter stuff becomes more prog pop - but you'll always get the signature Jeff Lynne hooks, vocals, strings and production. Take care.
R.I.P Richard Tandy.
Baby Groot dancing to Mr Blue Sky
As a drummer, “Fire On High” off Face The Music and the long version of “Roll Over Beethoven” off ELO 2 are good choices.
Mr. Blue Sky always makes me a little teary-eyed. And I’m not embarrassed!
Richard Tandy, the keyboardist, died recently. :-( R.I.P.
You should recognize the strong friendship between Jeff Lynn and George Harrison. You're already noticing the influences.
Yup I could definitely hear the beatles and George Martin influence all over this piece. I loved it! The second half is much stronger (imo) then the first but it's about how you finish! Mr blue sky was almost a lost beatles track at points lol
@@L33Reacts I'm often impressed with your observations and influence connections. Dig your reactions my good man!
Jeff Lynne produced this album! He also produced the 'new' Beatles' songs in the 90s Real Love and Free as a Bird. He tried to clean up Now and Then for the Beatles in the 90s to when they received it from Yoko, but the tech didn't exist yet. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. @@L33Reacts
@@L33ReactsCheck out their work together on The Travelling Wilburys ❤
Another suggestion: “When We Was Fab” by George Harrison. A very clever Beatles pastiche co-written with Jeff Lynne. Brilliant ❤
Well sir, anyone with the cahones to play this masterpiece in it's entirety deserves a sub and a like. Thanks 😊🤟
Jeff Lynne was in the middle of writer's block and took a trip to Switzerland to try to break out of it. But the weather sucked until one day when the sun came out. Hence, Mr. Blue Sky.... Lynne is a genius and willingly acknowledges the debt he owes to the Beatles.... Mr. Blue Sky has been voted the happiest song in rock music. I just love ELO's integration of strings in rock music. They combine rock with classical influences. Sweet Talkin' Woman was always my favorite on this album, but A New World Record is a superb and essential album.... Lee, one thing I really appreciate about your reactions is that you don't stop the songs in the middle repeatedly but let them play out. Thanks for that. It really irks me when people stop songs.
The entire side 3 of "Out Of The Blue" is the best work Jeff Lynne ever created, IMHO...
Agree! And so is the rest of the album. And everything else Jeff has made. 😊
I agree with you
I lean towards “ELDORADO” but this is certainly up there. Just a brilliant piece of music.
Aqui en Santiago de Chile 🇨🇱, America del Sur, es otoño la noche esta helada y nublada. Oir a la Electric Light Orchestra es una hermosa opcion. Mr Blue Sky me suena a 3 bandas en 1. ,ELO, The Beatles y Queen
Muy buena reaccion , saludos mi amigo, saludos a sus hijos. Y mas canciones de ELO, es una banda muy exclusiva con muchos hits. Evil Woman, Living thing, Telephone Line ,Last train to.london, all over the world, con esos ya no olvidaras a ELO.
thanks for this. one more listen still evokes so many memories of my youth. and this piece is sublime. and so emotive . . . .I was 19 when this dropped.
Bought this album in 1977
Quite simply one of the best albums ever and so glad you did CFARD in its entirety
Masterpiece and Mr Blue Sky is the ultimate feel good song
I had the ELO album before this one. Now realizing I should’ve gotten this one, too. Thanks Barry and Lee for introducing me to this.
You should have Eldorado, Face the Music, A New World Record, all their 70s stuff, really!
@@lauraallen55Yes! These 3 are the pinnacle of their creativity in the 70s.
I have all of them on rotation in my player lol!@@raymondggoldstein
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching my friend. This was delightful.
What a way to dip your toes into ELO! This album is an absolute classic-one of my favorite albums of all time. Jeff Lynne is the genius behind ELO and I highly recommend you continue to listen to more of their tunes-there are quite a few extremely popular songs by them. Great recommend from one of your patrons!
As a kid I would listen to this side of the album (on a turntable) at night to put me to sleep. This is the culmination of what ELO could be, and the best side of an album of all time in my opinion. A perfect blend of Rock/Pop/Synths/Orchestra and Jeff Lynne was the mastermind and voice behind it all!
ELO is one of my favorite bands. I have 7 of their albums.
I believe you will discover, the more you listen to ELO, you will come to love them A LOT.
One of the top 3 best concerts I ever saw, when I saw them on this album tour, in Fort Worth, TX in 1978! The local newspaper I worked for, bought our concert tickets and hotel room, and I bought the plane tickets. They "let me" write a concert review, and they published it in the weekend entertainment section!
That whole weekend experience was amazing, and the night of/the concert was in every way, a PEAK EXPERIENCE!🤩🤯😶🌫😏😊
P.S. - I am also clean and sober!!!!
Also awesome!
Lucky you get to hear this for the first time
We lost Richard Tandy on May 1st. The genius keyboard player for ELO. A loss. You hear him all over this.❤
Richard never got the respect he deserved. RIP Richard.
I'm glad you changed your life too. Looks like you've gained a lot of wisdom along the way. Blessings to you!
I would recommend Tightrope by ELO. It's a fantastic track that I think you'd enjoy
Music can be very healing, Your reactions to old favorites have moved me a few times, starting with the incomparable Close to the Edge.
I was quite "close to the edge" when I encountered that beautiful piece of art. It really brought it out of me. I still listen to it often ❤️
Another legendary band. And a segue to The Travelling Wilburys band eventually, I really hope: Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison. Not a bad lineup for a supergroup ❤❤❤
So many Great songs by ELO!👍🏻❤️
I was a big ELO fan and had most of their albums. I remember getting this when it first came out. I LOVED it played it over and over. The sound affected me.
Great reaction Lee. ELO was seven members at this point but recorded with a full orchestra and choir to give the soundscape you heard. Credit must be given to Louis Clark who arranged and conducted the orchestration with Jeff Lynne. ELO is a rabbit hole that you need to fall through, so much diverse material. As a drummer give the instrumental ‘Fire on High’ a reaction, Bev Bevan’s drumming is superb.
intro to Standin in the rain is very reminiscent of Shangri La from A New World Record. 'What's the use of changing things? Wonder what tomorrow brings?'
Yass! So excited to see this one. :) Summer and Lightning is one of my favorites of theirs. I like the second half more than the first half as well. One of the first uses of vocoder in Mr. Blue Sky. Jeff also employed it in Sweet Talkin' Woman, and a few other songs. ELO was one of the first to make heavy use of a full spectrum of synthesizers.
ELO is a deep, deep dive well worth taking! They were more experimental rock than any other genre, so you can hear Beatles, Beach Boys, disco, pop, art rock, synth before there really was synth, prog, orchestral rock and so on with them. One of my all time favorites, right up there (close) with the Beatles.
I don't even know what to suggest next, but their entire album Eldorado is fire, with Can't Get It Out of My Head as a big one from it. Face the Music, A New World Record, Discovery, pretty much all their 70s fare has so much to choose from. Oh, Telephone Line is a really unique one of theirs. Their cover of Roll Over Beethoven (with the video!) is fantastic too. Long Black Road is a later song that really rocks, and like many others sounds totally different from the next.
Great reaction, Lee, thanks, and to the requester of course, too. :)
Keep in mind that although ELO the band was just several people, when they recorded this album, they used a full orchestra. On tour, they did not.
This is SERIOUS stuff! Among other great thing, it's the longest production record album of its time. Too much ahead of its edge indeed!. Handle it with care. Cheers.
Check out "One Summer Dream" from FACE THE MUSIC (ELO)!
I love all that you share with us. You are one of the most forthright people. I just wanted to tell you you that that word, concerto is pronounced
CON CHAIR TOE.
Take care.
This is one of my favorite albums. Got me through a lot of my late teens/early 20's. The Eldorado Album is pretty great, too.
Can’t thank you enough for taking the time to react to this epic ELO concerto!!! Every upload I’m amazed at the varied music you’re not afraid to dive into… such a great channel!!!
My favorite elo album.
Electric Light Orchestra - Fire On High
Electric Light Orchestra - Evil Woman
Electric Light Orchestra - Strange Magic
Electric Light Orchestra - Larado Tornado
Electric Light Orchestra - I Can’t Get It Out Of My Head
Like a symphony eh? So unique to ELO sound. See why us 60s 70s music lovers are so damn picky on now a days music?
It's rainy here in Pueblo this morning.
i live in aberdeen scotland, it always rains here lol
@@smithpm81 We really needed it. 🪻
It's raining here in Maryland as well. Perfect day for this track!
Gotta listen to Livin’ Thing.by ELO
Great band. Born out of 60's pop band The Move whose members, Roy Wood and Bev Bevan founded ELO. Roy Wood only lasted one album before 'musical differences' with Jeff Lynne led to him leaving and forming Wizzard. Eldorado is my favorite album of theirs and is effectively a single work.
I know The Contortionist's stuff, or at least some of it. Love the lyrics for The Parable referencing Brian Eno, who is obviously one of their influences. I agree people should check that out!
That song means so much to me ❤️ more then I could ever explain probably. I've been a huge fan of them since I was in high school and they were on their "first" big album exoplanet. Them and Between the Buried and Me are my favorite bands of my era. Pure prog magic. Coma ecliptic is a wonderful intro album to BTBAM and it takes you all kinds of strange places. It's a prog metal opera concept album. Every song is a different universe basically as a man searches his dreams for his dream life. I won't give away the ending because it's absolutely chilling the first time you get to it. If you like the contortionist you will love btbam.
Thanks! Will definitely check them out. Sounds amazing!
I love concept albums. ELO even did a couple (about a time traveler). I know I suggested their earlier albums, but you would probably like Time: "Time is the ninth studio album by English rock band Electric Light Orchestra, released in July 1981 on Jet Records. It is a concept album about a man from the 1980s who is taken to the year 2095, where he is confronted by the dichotomy between technological advancement and a longing for past romance"
I go for some of the same music you like especially along the prog lines. Early Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, etc. I do like a lot of the newer fusion with metal too, as long as it's at least somewhat melodic.
Thanks so much again for the rec!
Feel like I just woke up out of a coma seeing a different world 🎇. ELO 🎇
Pleased you enjoyed this. One of the first albums I 'got into' as a kid. It's brilliant. I am also glad you are getting your shit together and are a survivor. You have more charisma in your little toe than most people possess in their whole body and are so empathetic also. Keep it real man. I am going to join you on Patreon in the coming weeks as you inspire me.
Well, I find you very cathartic! Thank you!
Please continue down the rabbit hole. "Shangri-la" , "Tightrope", "Strange Magic" and "Can't Get it Out of My Head" are great next options! Truly amazing music, Steely Dan and ELO were my first albums I ever bought in the mid seventies, and I have yet to find anything better.
You just beat me to it)).
The fire extinguisher... you would've thought it was a cowbell. They struck the side of the metal fire extinguisher to get the cowbell sound. Hey, when they were mixing and realised it needed a cowbell they wouldn't get a cowbell instantly. So, improvise!
Tightrope
By ELO
John Lennon said that ELO were the ‘sons of the Beatles’ and Jeff Lynne was certainly a worthy successor to Lennon and McCartney in song writing.
Unlike many of its 1970s contemporaries, ELO has aged extremely well thanks to the genius of Jeff Lynne.
Though ELO was never a showcase for drummer Bev Bevan, he did have a few standout performances (Fire On High for one), and services the band beautifully. His history in rock goes back to the mid-1960s with an association with greats of the time.
And ELO management is very accommodating to UA-camrs. They rarely block.
Love Mr Blue Sky. First 3 only give a hint of what's to come if you dig deeper? Jeff Lynne is a genius. Can I tempt you into some mid era GenesIs? Duke, And then there were 3, Trick of the tail perhaps? I'd forget Abacab onwards.
The fire extinguisher, kind of sounds like some type of a cymbal but not
ELO IS Jeff Lynn. It's all him, a musical genius. He also produces albums for other artists.
The only thing I like better than this concerto is the album ELDORADO, of which the whole album is a rock symphony. Just awesome. Let the music play.
I listened to The Contortionist. It was good!
Most of your old friends are dead? Seriously, that is hard... I'm glad you made it! I like the first four linked tracks on 'On the Third Day' better than this (but there are few, I fear, would agree with me).
Mr blue sky sounds like beatles...
Try watching ELO live at Wembley Stadium.
It's okay. ❤I don't know if you ever saw Hamilton but there's a line in A. Burr song ..It says " I am the one thing in life I can control.... I am inimitable I am an original. " It's taking me a long long time to learn that and I'm a senior already.
Good job picking this suite. Now do Chicago’s Ballet for a girl from Buchanan.
Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan took ELO to new heights when Roy Wood left the band, but they needed the avant-garde nature of Roy Wood to get started. You should look up the progenitor band for ELO, called "The Move", especially their later work (ie, when Jeff joined the band). The early Move stuff is great also.
Check out "10538 Overture" and "Look At Me Now" from ELO's debut album to hear how the seeds of greatness were planted.
"The Move" was probably more famous in their UK homeland than here in the US. Great songs by them include "Fire Brigade", "Blackberry Way", "Tonight", and "I Can Hear the Grass Grow". The extened live version of "I Can Hear the Grass Grow", released on the album "Live at the Fillmore 1969" is epic!!!
I'll stop now.....sorry for getting too excited.
Hi Lee, I checked out your recommendation for The Contortionists. Thank you for turning me on to it. I LOVE it! Are you in the mood for more RUSH? I recommend "Ghost of a Chance" - it just feels right.
Glad you did this.. Liked ELO but had lost interest by this point as I found them getting kinda lightweight. Should've listened to this record more father than take it to the second hand store 2 days later!😂 Hear the earlier stuff.
Geminii ? Sounds like you have a BDay coming up.
For me, a lot of ELO's music sounds like a rich icing without the cake.
Pronounced con-CHAIR-toe.
And The Beatles influence isn't merely a product of its time; Jeff Lynne set out to pick up where "I Am The Walrus" left off.
I know. I always say it wrong for some reason lol
I'm doing that track tomorrow actually ! I watched the video and damn. The lads are out there lol I love it
Check out "Can't get it out of my Head ".❤
Not sure why, but concerto is pronounced cun-chair-toe
Because it’s an Italian word.
Derived from Latin for concertare@@timpindar
Lee...when you are in the mood for another 'epic',please check out another Spock's Bars song- the last one from the 'V' album called ' The Great Nothing' (you reacted to At The End Of The Day -1st track from the album). Your mind will be blown,bro...promise! T
OOPS..Spock's Beard...damn typos!
Oh, Lee, it's kuhn-CHAIR-tow
They have another song that's called 'Rockaria' and I pronounced it 'rock-uh-ree-uh' for the longest time, then I was like duh - it's rock aria as in an operatic aria lol! Also the opera bit at the beginning, the lady says 'oops' because she started too soon, or something, and they left it in. :D
Their album Discovery is pronounced 'disco very'
Some really creative people, mostly Jeff lol!
I know I always pronounce it wrong 🤣 my apologies.
I noticed while editing once again 🤣🤣
I love it! I'm always pronouncing stuff wrong lol >.
:D You're the best
Con-cherto.
Lee, do you think this piece has a Beatles feel about it?.
ELO is influenced by Yes and The Beatles.
