    As we are getting our first real push of cold air from the north, and our golden rod is all but played out, it can only mean one thing for me, it's time to bring in all our honey supers.
    My method of maintaining a colony of bees, 3 deeps stacked on top of each other, 2 for brood boxes and one as the honey super, works great for me here in the deep south. However, come the end of October, when the Goldenrod is just about dried up signifying the end of our nectar flow, I'm wanting to bring in the honey supers, and get our hives situated to go through the winter with only 2 deeps on it. The other great thing about bringing in the third super is any honey that is in it I will process, and the blend of spring/fall honey is such a great tasting honey. The mixture of tallow, privit, and goldenrod honey is very unique, and I am very fond of it.
    Over the course of 3 days, with the help of Good Time Charlie and Dr. Billy, we managed to bring in almost 90 supers with 18 of them containing enough honey for us to process. The video shows some of what we do as go through the boxes and then load them into the van. Of course, there are a few surprises on this video that you will just have to find out for yourself what they are. I hope you will enjoy this wrangling adventure. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed
    PS As I announced in the video, I will be one of the many guest speaker at the upcoming LBA State Convention from December 5-7 in Pineville, La. along with my good buddies the 628 Dirt Rooster, and Schawee. I am looking forward to seeing many of you there.

      That particular trait is a learned quality, but will eventually become part of their genetics over a period of time. A very desirable trait for bees in the south where beetles are very prevalent. God's peace.

    A pilot, doctor and bee keeper cleaned out some hives. They saw a lot of honey. They didn't eat it but let the bees eat it. The bees were happy, the rats were sad and the bees got ready for a long winter's sleep. God bless you and all your helpers.

      Welcome aboard, thank you so much for your gift of subbing to my channel. The Rooster and I are great friends and we do a lot of trash talking each other on our respective channels, it's all part of the fun. The snakes at the end of this video have been used dozens of times over the years, and it just never gets old....at least for me. If you'd like to see the original video I made using them many different people, the link is below. By the way, I even got the Rooster with them as well. I'm looking forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    Another awesome production from Studio 🐝. Beetle smash o rama. You are as OCD about those pesky beetles as I. That peacock pit is perfect. Lucky you have that. I harvested all my frames that looked like that. I had honey supers though, instead of deeps. A lot uncapped as well. I shook the uncapped frames to be sure nothing came out. The ones that shook out liquid I open fed back to them. That was a big hornet nest. Braver than I. lol. Thanks for the video.

      You would think as winter approaches, our duties as bee keeper would slow down, not a chance. I did have a bunch of uncapped comb, but it was all solid. Stay tuned for the processing video next week, I just finished editing it. Trust me, even though I suspected it was abandoned, I was still nervous. Still, I thought if the Rooster could do it, I may as well try my hand at it. God's peace brother.

    Brother Jeff,
    Thanks for another treat from your apiary. I've already learned that if I'm patient enough...you'll answer some of the questions I have formed.....like pulling that third box. This being my first year, I only got two supers to harvest. I put them back on after extracting so the bees could clean them out. One have did that, picked it clean as a whistle. The other hive started filling it again! So, I thought fair enough, I'll leave it there as extra stores. But looking back, I wish I had pulled it off.....like you did in this video. I'd been better off to set this super out, let the bees rob it clean and then stored it, ready for the spring flow. Thanks for the great lesson. Have a blessed day.

    • @JeffHorchoff

      Another great aspect of keeping bees is it affords the bee keeper the constant opportunity of learning. As long as we are learning, from mistakes as well, we will move forward in becoming better stewards of God's creation. Keep on healing. God's peace Mark.

    Yep. It`s a good idea to try to only breed strong genetics and let the weak die off. Sometimes I`ll throw mustard green seeds around in out of the way places on my property. Some of the seeds grow into huge, healthy plants that survive cold better than others. I keep the seeds from plants like those to use the next year and so on.
    Our local beekeeper didn`t sell honey this year. I saw some raw and unfiltered honey in a store by a Louisiana producer and bought that. It`s way way more expensive than what I normally get but I like supporting Louisiana businesses and getting REAL honey from the USA.

I`m moving to a place with room for chickens and a large garden and am thinking about getting just one hive and maybe some extra boxes for swarms in case I want to expand. I just like bees and honey and probably wouldn`t try to make money from it. I could though because there`s a very popular little store up the road (the only store within 15 miles) that would let me sell honey there. I don`t care too much about money though. @@JeffHorchoff Yes, there is an incursion in parts of New South Wales on the East Coast which is very concerning, especially when a few irresponsible Beekeepers moved Hives out of the restricted areas illegally. Thankfully Western Australia has a very robust Bio Security system and movement of Bees, Honey, Wax and used Hives / equipment from interstate is banned. Add to that a massive Desert between us and the East coast we are hopeful that our pest free status can be maintained. Meanwhile all of us that keep Bees are being extra vigilant. They stay out buzzing around because they have been couped up so long. The snow gets messy, but I don't think Jeff sees that in a bee wonderland down south. The domed cells along the bottom of that frame you showed (around 22:04)... was that drone brood?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому +1

      No it was not, it was golden rod honey. I will say this, it appeared to be drone cells, but it was ALL honey. The yellow tint of the goldenrod did make it look like capped brood. Thanks for watching. God's peace Steve.

    Do you have any advice on over wintering bees here in louisiana? I'm 1 hour west of you near baton rouge

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

      Our winters are considerably milder than most folks, so I am able to get our bees through the winter in two deep supers. My methods are explained in the video, and I do not advise anyone on how they should keep their bees. I offer my methods only as idea for comparison. God's peace Barton.

    Is there anything you can use empty combs for? Poor bees do a lot of work, but no honey yet. Seems a shame to waste it.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 роки тому

      Sometimes the comb is used for bait in swarm traps, bees love old brood comb and are attracted to it. However, I simply recycle the wax and give it back to the bees. Check out the link below on that subject. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    Hi Jeff, How do you make Mead.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

      I have never made mead, but I know a few bee keepers that do. Personally, any mead I've ever sampled tasted terrible. Thanks for watching. God's peace Gordon.

    Will chickens cut down your hive beetle and moth population?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

      Unfortunately, since the chickens can't get into the boxes, they do nothing to control either the beetles or the moths. I wish that were the case, we have dozens of chickens. Thanks for watching. God's peace Dwayne.

    Mr.Ed i live in Lafayette,La. I want to start bee keeping. So ill start getting equipment and stuff. To ready for when im able to find nucs. Do you recommend i start with one hive or 2 or more to be able to sustain the hives? Please any help would be amazing!! Thanks!

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

      My recommendation when first starting is with 3 hives, it's very possible to lose one or two hives the very first year. With three hives there is almost a certainty you will come out of winter with a hive, with a great possibility of pulling honey from it in the spring as well as splitting it to have 2 hives. God's peace Marc.
