Thank You Mr. Ed. You sir are such an inspiration. I had just about given up on Beekeeping since we had a terrible passed couple of years. But since Carolyn sent me to you, I have been inspired again. All of my girls had either left or just simply died off I don't know. But all we have is one hive left. We caught a swarm from that hive, but it was extremely small. But the queen was there so maybe just maybe we are back. Two hives and we're back, yeah right. Again thanks Mr. Ed you and Carolyn saved us.

Jeff I think what happened was the first swarm was small. It stayed in the box with its queen. The new swarm was so massive they just steamrolled over the small swarm as they overwhelmed the smaller swarm and never had many resources yet as the privet bloomed and the new swarm had nectar and numbers to be unstoppable

Oh my goodness Mr. Ed, you're on fire this season! These last couple of swarms have been HUGE! If this keeps up maybe you WILL need to start putting out full size boxes for traps instead of nucs. But be careful about that smugness over the Lord's blessings now. My Grandma always used to say, "A haughty spirit goeth before defeat!" LOL!
I really try being a good bee wrangler, but when I have the opportunity to run the Dirt Rooster down, I lose all sense of propriety, another reason I need prayers. Thanks for watching. God's peace Carole. Mr. Ed

Mr. Ed good day, been watching your videos for quite some time and how eager i am to return home to my country Philippines, i will try making bee box catch swarm etc, theres a lot of honey bees in our province, sometimes on a tree, in our cabinet and in the wild/ forest. ive been wanting to start bee farming and you had gave me guidelines how to do it, you are such a good man, my brother in Christ, Godbless you more.
Mr Ed what does spraying them with sugar water do??And I love how you make jabs at Randy!! It's so funny. Makes me happy that you two are such good friends. God Bless Mr Ed.
Spraying the bees with sugar water distracts them. As they busy themselves cleaning up all the sugar that is on them, I can go about my business unnoticed. Thank you for your blessing and for watching. Until the next one, God's peace Theresa. Mr. Ed
Bro. Ed. Blessing be upon you. Thank you for what you do. Once you told me that the bees dont sting because they dont have a hive to protect. While they are in the box; don't they consider that a hive? Thank you for you time and patience. Watching you has introduced such an intrigue within me. Thank you again for for time.
Thank you for your blessing Tommy, it is greatly appreciated. By the word "hive," I mean stores, and brood. If these two elements are present, the bees will defend it. Thanks for asking and watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Bees in nuc before this swarm moved in? Lots of dead bees in the bottom of the box? Could be that a stronger swarm usurped the weaker previous tenants?
I think that's exactly what happened. It appeared to be a strong swarm, the first one, but apparently not strong enough. Good observation. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
I like how you just pick them up and put them in a box Jeff. Rooster would have had them flying and cut half that tree down. Lol JK I love both of you guys videos. Both are awesome people keep it up
Another awesome video, Mr. Ed! I throughly enjoyed this! Thank you, and I praise Jesus for His creations! Bees are “da bomb!” God continue to rain down blessings upon you, brother!
Mr. Ed: Nice dig on Dirt Rooster. I have a quick question if I may. As you started out by carefully scooping handfulls of bees, you said you were making a special effort in not sturring up the bees you slowly lowered your hands towards the floor inside the 10 frame box, you carefully opened your hands allowing 90% of the bees in your hands to gentley fall to the floor of the box with almost no disruption, and then you came up out of the box, shook both hands violently to dislodge the 10% left on your hands. Would coming up, and excepting the 10% of the bees still clinging to your gloves, and going right back scooping up the remaining 3-5 pounds of bees under the 5 frame nook tied to the tree been less disruptive and had many fewer bees in the air until you had finished removing that big bunch 100%? Just a minor thought for future encounters, perhaps that will become more important as the Afericanized feral swarms move into your neighborhood. Love your videos and love that you include your mom as much as you can. Say high from BACKPORCH APIARIES north of Dallas, TX. Both of you stay safe in the coming weeks.
Trash talking the Rooster is just plain fun, but the current Corona issue is VERY serious, and I appreciate your concern for me and mom. I hope all is well for your family as well. Your point is well made. In my diligence of searching for the queen, I do act in haste, and your suggestion is a very good one. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching. Stay safe my brother. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Hi! I just subscribed. I really like bees and I guess l liked them too much, because it turns out there's a hive in the wall between me and my neighbor and they'll have to go through my wall to get in. Anyway, at least it's beekeepers getting the bees and I sure hope they can get them out all right, but I'm a little nervous for my cats and me. Watching you handle the hives makes me feel a bit better. Keeping bees has got to be one of the oldest monastic practices, so it's great that you keep and care for them at the Abbey.
Thank you so much for subbing to my channel, you humble me with your gift. Here's a suggestion, since you have bees living with you, how about joining a bee club in your area and really learn how to tend them. You may even become inspired enough to ask a member if they could assist in removing the bees and setting them up in your yard. You are right about the tradition of bee keeping in monasteries, it has been going on for over 1500 years, we are just continuing the practice here at St. Joseph Abbey. Keep me posted on your bee keeping journey. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I forgot to mention I'm in SW Montana, I subscribe to your videos (very informative and full of lighthearted humor/banter) A person can learn so much from watching not just the success but how your so successful at catching, question? when a swarm lands and decides this is it, how long do you think it takes the queen to go in? Continuez votre bon travail. Le frère de la paix de Dieu. M. Ed

Please excuse the redundancy of my question Mr Ed, but why do you use sugar water for the bees? Is it an alternative to a smoker? And what exactly does the sugar water do to the bees? My family really enjoy your videos 😊
Hi Dotts. Sugar water calms the bees down. They start cleaning each other up and don't get the chance to be so feisty when being removed from point A to point B.
I am very happy that you and your family enjoy watching my bee wrangling adventures, thank you. I use the sugar water to distract and calm the bees. When I spray it on them, they concern themselves with cleaning and not paying attention to what I'm doing. Smoke only makes bees nervous, and you don't want that when you are grabbing bees. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I have 2 swarm traps high up on poles within 100 yards of the apiary. What is the sequence of events on moving the trapped bees to their permanent hive in the apiary (timing, process) ? I pulled the trap down (bees shut in) and moved the trap to it's final position in the apiary, waited 2 days then opened it up and transferred them to an 8-frame box. Despite forcing them to re-orient, there were still some bees that returned to the swarm trap site and hung out there for days.
There are so many different ways of moving a swam trap and then transferring the bees to the regular box. In my opinion, as long as the majority of bees made the transition, the move was a successful one. Great job Bruce. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
Mr Ed I just started watching bee videos in the last month or so I have subscribed to your channel and have probably watched 200 of your videos. I also subscribed to the dirt roosters channel it never fails you bring a smile to my face when I watch your videos it is fun to watch and I have learned a lot about the bees The videos with you and dirt rooster are a hoot please keep posting videos I think you have me wanting to get some bees next spring. Can a person buy some St Abee honey through the mail? I’m in West Virginia
Why do you spray down the bees with sugar water? Also was wondering why you did not transfer bees to a larger box so bees have room to grow. That box was full as soon as you transferred the swarm. Thank you.😁
It calms and distracts the bees while I work. It's a lot better working with calm bees than mad bees. The box I used is capable of adding more boxes to accommodate growth, and that is what I used. Thanks for watching. Until the next one, God's peace. Mr. Ed
I am not a monk....yet, but I do have the monks praying for the success of the Abbee Honey program, and that really is an advantage most bee keepers do not have. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
I was wondering what purpose the sugar water serves when you spray it on the bees. Does it cause them to clean their wings, and thus stay occupied and less interested in your presence near the hive?
You are very perceptive, it does cause them to clean their wings and since they are distracted with that, they do not pay to much attention to what I'm doing, and they are less likely to sting me. Very good question. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Maybe that little white box had pesticide where somebody came over and tried to kill them off out of fear or some other substance that was deadly to the bees
The longest I keep them in a cage is 2 days, but I have forgotten about them and found them dead after 6 or 7 days. Thankfully that has not happened but once. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Mostly distracts the bees while I work around them. They busy themselves cleaning it off of each other, and don't concern themselves with me. Thanks for watching. God's peace Nola. Mr. Ed
Nectar is just honey that has not had the proper amount of moisture removed from it. Nectar on it's own will ferment, yet once it reaches a 17% moisture level and becomes honey, it will never ferment or go bad. I have show what nectar looks like on several videos, you will see it eventually. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
Great video!!! How many swarms have you gotten the year?? I know you are leaving Dirt Rooster in your dust. God Bless you Mr. Jeff (Ed). Hope your mom is doing well!
Thank you for your blessing Gina, I need all I can get. I have more than 40 swarms under my belt, not literally, to date. God has really blessed me with a lot of them this year. Mom is well, as I know your mom is well as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
The sugar water calms and distracts the bees. They begin cleaning themselves up making them happy because it's sugar, and at the same time, it distracts them allow me to do the necessary work without to much worry of them getting nervous with me around them. Thanks for watching. God's peace Larry. Mr. Ed
Hi Mr Ed, how do you keep ants and wax moths out of your trap hives, I use two frames of older comb in each box within a few days ants! Maybe some food left in comb? I live in SC.
I do not do anything to prevent the ants from getting into the traps. However, the moths won't get in there because it's to early in the year and they are not active yet. I have never lost a trap to moths. I wish you all the luck with your traps. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
you know when all is said and done this year and you have beaten the Dirt Rooster by a 2:1 or even 3:1 margin he is going to claim some lame excuse like "but I did mine without a hood and jacket" or "but I was putting most of my weight on one leg". BTW, you better tell that boy to put down the honeycomb sometimes, they don't make those suits much bigger than what he's got. God Bless and keep wrangling those bees.
Thank you for the blessing Glen. Whatever the margin that I whoop the Rooster by is not as important as to the fact that I put it on him yet again. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
I'm in no hurry to get them, and the homeowner is OK with that also. Let's see how many swarms they throw next year. Thanks for watching. God's peace Kelly. Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed? How long was that nuc box there before you came and decided you had two many bees? I'm thinking you had multiple swarms! AND multiple queens! The dead bees were protecting a queen that got overwhelmed, or that is still wandering around. And there was a frame of cutouts. And they had started building comb and bringing in pollen? three days maybe? This one was fascinating! The ones on the outside may have been a totally unrelated swarm!
There were multiple queens on this video. One appeared at 10:02 right at the center of the super and walked off with a drone, I missed her. Don't worry, there were many viewers who didn't and showed her to me, and then there was the one that I caught. Never the less, these bees are doing well, and that speaks for itself. God's peace Julie. Mr. Ed

There must be 50K bees in that one colony. The Abbey is going to have bumper crop of wax and honey next season. Hey Mr. Ed you said in June they would be selling honey. I want a big jar of that honey. One you yourself bottled. I will pay whatever the going price is for it. Can you give me the place where I can order this?

My real advantage in placing traps is I place them where I have done cut outs, or where I have caught swarms in past years. Knowing the area where bees are almost guarantees success at catching swarms. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
that was a nice size swarm-- but gotta give the biggest swarm video to the 628DirtRooster-- i do believe he holds the world record largest bee swarm video on his channel-- it took many men- a pickup truck and at minimum 48 hives to catch those bees-- now that was an amazing video-- boy i sure would like to see you wrangle one of those kinds of swarms-- many blessings....Glo

How about I’m on team bee? The more bee swarms put in people-friendly places, the better I like it. It is fun though watching the friendly competition. Keep on filming.
I use it to calm and distract the bees before I start grabbing them. They are to busy cleaning themselves off to be concerned with what I'm doing, and after the clump of bee is in the box, they still clean themselves and not fly off. Good question. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

You dropped that queen several times, poor girl ;P 😂..... I bet they were happy to get a big enough home. Another great catch mr ed as usual. Poor rooster don't stand a chance. Keep up the good work love watching u catch bees. God bless.
Thank you for the blessing Jerry, it goes a long way. When the Rooster looks back on this year and his swarm catches, the only thing he will bee thinking is " wait till next year Mr. Ed" thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed
You two are brothers and I really love the way you razz each other back and forth. He knows you're just playin. God bless you both for the work you do with such passion and play. You're both making a difference in this world. Will always keep y'all in our prayers!
Another great video!! I love watching my bee’s fly in with pollen and stuff!! Right they are kicking butt and growing quick.
What a treasure we have watching our bees work.....the honey is on the way. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
awesome we have a few swarms we will be catching this year - awesome work Mr. Ed - Ruthie & Clay :)
I wish you all the best in your endeavors. May the swarms be large and plentiful. Thanks for watching. God's peace to both of you.
Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff that makes sense!! I figured as much but wanted to be sure my guestimation was correct.
Bro.
Mr. Ed
10:14 look to the left... you'll see a bee with another nearly attached with attendance walking to the left corner. Maybe a queen?
It most definitely was another queen, and a drone found her too. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Mr.
Mr. Ed
Is that the queen at 10:06 right above the left hand side of the opening??
Yes it was, and I did not even see it. You have very good eyes. Thanks for using them to watch my videos as well. God's peace.

Looked like the queen to me too.
Fascinating watching you work....those are incredible creatures.
I have to agree, bees are incredible. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Mr. Ed
i really like what you are doing !! you have a blessed life :)
I am full aware of the blessed life I lead, and I am ever so grateful for it. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Will you and dirt rooster be doing swarm competitions in 2021? I hope so!
Yes indeed, and may the best wrangler win. The loser has to buy a Taco Bell dinner for the winner, and I have not paid for one yet. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed

Mr. Ed
I forgot to mention I'm in SW Montana, I subscribe to your videos (very informative and full of lighthearted humor/banter) A person can learn so much from watching not just the success but how your so successful at catching, question? when a swarm lands and decides this is it, how long do you think it takes the queen to go in?

A bientôt l'ami JEFF
Continuez votre bon travail. Hi Mr.ED
There was somethin' big,
Hangin' on a tree.
A box of bees,
A swarm to see.
Box was too small,
For ALL the bees,
The swarm outside,
Buzzing, "Please let.us.in.to.
the 'Inn'!"
"To the 'Inn',"
"To the 'Inn',"
"LET US IN!"
Mr. E'd was called,
Knew what to do.
Put his Bee-suit on,
Put his Gloves on too.
Lemon grass oil,
Swap-pin' some frames,
Scoo-pin' bees off,
Off of that box full of bees!
Full of bees!
Full of Bees!
FULL OF BEES!!
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Have a GREAT WEEKEND!

Please excuse the redundancy of my question Mr Ed, but why do you use sugar water for the bees? Is it an alternative to a smoker? And what exactly does the sugar water do to the bees? My family really enjoy your videos 😊
Dotts Hall I keep wondering the same thing.

Mr. Ed
Wouldn't you look for another Queen in the bunch beneath? Does one swarm really have that many bees without having more Queens?
My favourite bedtime viewing x
You are to kind, sweet dreams. God's peace.
Mr.
Mr. Ed
That fellow, rooster ain't never caught a manly swarm like you Monks catch.
Just kidding buddy... Trying to stir the pot a bit...😉
Jeff Cotton - there’s no competition when it comes to God’s work! Look at you, shakin your tail feather! LOL 😀
I am not a monk....yet, but I do have the monks praying for the success of the Abbee Honey program, and that really is an advantage most bee keepers do not have. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Thanks !!
It's always my pleasure to share my bee wrangling experiences. God's peace brother.
Mr.

Mr. Ed
Very true
Hi Mr Ed, I just wondered how long a queen could survive in a catcher-cage? I presume and attendant bees would feed her if she wanted them to?
The longest I keep them in a cage is 2 days, but I have forgotten about them and found them dead after 6 or 7 days. Thankfully that has not happened but once. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Right, sorry to hear that! Thanks for your response,
Simon
What does the sugar water do Mr Ed
Mostly distracts the bees while I work around them. They busy themselves cleaning it off of each other, and don't concern themselves with me. Thanks for watching. God's peace Nola.
Mr. Ed
Does nectar look like honey? You never show nectar?
Nectar is just honey that has not had the proper amount of moisture removed from it. Nectar on it's own will ferment, yet once it reaches a 17% moisture level and becomes honey, it will never ferment or go bad. I have show what nectar looks like on several videos, you will see it eventually. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
Modest bees, hiding their nakedness behind fig leaves.
Maybe they had gotten nectar from an apple tree? God's peace.
Mr.
Mr. Ed
What does the sugar water do? What is the purpose of sugar water?
Mr. Ed
What about the original colony behind the fireplace. Are they staying put?
This was a wonderful and fun video, thanks Mr. Ed!

What does the sugar water do to the process??
The sugar water distracts the bees and allow me to work them with a lesser chance of gettin stung. It's a great tool to use when wrangling bees. Thanks for watching and asking a very good question. I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. God's peace.

Why do you spray them with sugar water Sir?
Sugar water calms and distracts the bees. As soon as I spray the bees they begin to clean themselves and each other making them very gentle. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 8 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come. Hello MR. ED, have you ever tried to catch bee using only wax foundation comb and lemongrass oil? (For just experimenting in easy way only) 😇😇😇
There must be 50K bees in that one colony. The Abbey is going to have bumper crop of wax and honey next season. Hey Mr. Ed you said in June they would be selling honey. I want a big jar of that honey. One you yourself bottled. I will pay whatever the going price is for it. Can you give me the place where I can order this?
I'll let you know when we have our honey in the gift shop, it will bee towards the end of June. God's peace JJ.
Mr. Ed
Thank you Jeff. Give me the site address and if they take orders online. I would not pass up the chance to taste that wonderful honey you make. Please bee careful while wrangling. Blessed Sunday. JJ:D
great video Jeff, what kind of place do you look for to put your swarm boxes ?
My real advantage in placing traps is I place them where I have done cut outs, or where I have caught swarms in past years. Knowing the area where bees are almost guarantees success at catching swarms. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
There was a Bee war. They literally drag their fallen brethren back into the hive after battle.
that was a nice size swarm-- but gotta give the biggest swarm video to the 628DirtRooster-- i do believe he holds the world record largest bee swarm video on his channel-- it took many men- a pickup truck and at minimum 48 hives to catch those bees-- now that was an amazing video-- boy i sure would like to see you wrangle one of those kinds of swarms-- many blessings....Glo

How can you tell the difference between a mated and a virgin queen?
If you are simply looking at them, you can't . The only way for sure is to see if there are new eggs in the comb. Then, you know she has been mated. Thanks for watching. God's peace Kathleen.

Do you remember when the DR filled 19 boxes from one swarm capture? I do. Keep on trying! LOL
but that was at a commercial apiary, and he had a lot of help. I'm on Team Abbey this year! Go Monks, or Go Home! LOL

How about I’m on team bee? The more bee swarms put in people-friendly places, the better I like it. It is fun though watching the friendly competition. Keep on filming.
What is the purpose of the sugar water?
I use it to calm and distract the bees before I start grabbing them. They are to busy cleaning themselves off to be concerned with what I'm doing, and after the clump of bee is in the box, they still clean themselves and not fly off. Good question. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Yes they swarm just feels like it takes forever
